FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the best guide for the Midwest bride! What defines a Midwest bride? Here’s how we see her -- down to earth, deeply values opinions, feels strongly about family and traditions yet not afraid to deviate slightly from the overdone traditions. The Midwest bride especially is looking to incorporate originality into her wedding. She wants to be impressed and inspired, but then she wants to be told how to accomplish that same vision with less time and less money. Most importantly, she can’t get enough inspiration, which is why we do what we do here at Weddingday! All the best to you in your planning,

HOW TO CREATE A

locally-focused wedding

Written by Jessica Blair, photo by Gabrielle Cheikh Photography

Let’s be honest. Your wedding is going to be darling. From the color scheme to the cake, I can just envision the gorgeousness now. But here’s a thought, wouldn’t it be that much sweeter if your wedding were locally sourced, too? The idea of shopping local and supporting our mom-and-pop stores is hardly a new one, but when you consider the amount of money that’s invested into a wedding, it becomes an enormously effective way to support your community. Nerd alert–it’s a mini economic infusion that keeps more of your dollars in your neighborhood–a win-win! So, how to go about doing some local good while planning “I dos?” Here are a few suggestions:

BUY YOUR WEDDING GOWN FROM AN INDEPENDENT SHOP Whether you’re shopping for a wedding dress or venue hunting, choosing an independently owned vendor (versus a national retail or hotel chain) allows you to support your local business owners while scoring fabulous goods and services. Oftentimes, it means that you also get perks like working with people so passionate about weddings and events that they’ve created their own business to focus on helping you. 8

WEDDINGDAY

ASK YOUR FLORIST ABOUT REGIONAL BLOOMS Those lovely flowers at the shop up the street sometimes travel thousands of miles to get to you. No, really. Ask your florist if they source from regional farms, and always ask which flowers will be in season during your wedding day (you could also get an awesome deal!).

WORK WITH ETSY ARTISTS IN YOUR AREA Did you know that Etsy allows you to search by area? Simply scroll down to “Shop location” once your search yields results and choose “Choose a custom location” to enter in your city. Voilà! Click through all of the independent wedding invitation designers, hair accessory creators, calligraphers and more in your hood.

ADD A DOSE OF LOCAL FLAVOR TO YOUR FAVORS Maybe there’s an iconic chocolatier up the street, or a classic soda that’s headquartered in your town. A wonderful vineyard that sells split bottles of bubbly or a bakery that serves up the most delectable treats? I just love the idea of introducing out-of-town guests to one of your favorite, local treats.

REPRESENT WITH REGIONAL EATS One of my favorite parts of our wedding was dessert catering by a local food truck. Not only did we let guests in on one of our bestkept secrets, we helped to line the pockets of a locally-sourced start up, ourselves.

WELCOME GUESTS WITH A MAP OF HIDDEN GEMS Whether they’re coming from two towns over or an ocean away, your wedding guests will thank you for a heads up on the best coffee shop, the nearest drug store or the coolest pizza joint. Mock up or hire out a handdrawn map highlighting your favorite finds, which you can include in invitations, on your wedding website or in a welcome gift bag, delivered upon hotel check-in.

FEATURED WEDDING

CARLSON & BRADLEY COPELAND

It was early morning business flights at the Columbus, Ohio airport that allowed Carlson and Brad’s paths to cross. But it was an unlikely path they won’t forget. Lucky for Brad, he was meeting their mutual friend for coffee and, lucky for Carlson, she had a flight with the same friend and had made time to wash her hair! “I knew I liked him from day one because he commented on my stylish Frye boots,” she says. “I have a unique sense of style, so it has always been important to me to find someone who enjoys my individuality.”

THE PROPOSAL

A CHIC, COLORFUL WEDDING AT THE COMMONS

After nearly two years as a couple, Brad knew it was time to ask Carlson to marry him, but the next decision was: Where do you find a unique ring for a one-of-a-kind girl? Grandview Mercantile, a fine antiques marketplace in Columbus, Ohio, had the perfect vintage 1940’s ring. Brad is a corporate planner so, when the special day finally arrived, he was able to convince Carlson to attend an event planning convention with him. Within walking distance of the “convention,” he led Carlson to their favorite park and popped the question in the middle of the pouring down rain! “I do not remember how he asked it,” she recalls, “but it was such a good feeling! I immediately said yes and his friends from work captured the moment. We then went to brunch, where our family surprised me to celebrate! It was perfect!”

COLORS OF LOVE // Featured Wedding

THE PLANNING Carlson and Brad are two true Midwesterners–Carlson from Columbus, Indiana and Brad from Mansfield, Ohio. For the location of the wedding, Carlson had her heart set on her hometown of Columbus. With this decided, nailing down their preferred vendors was step number two. In addition to having Carlson’s grandfather, a retired Presbyterian Minister, officiate their wedding, they knew they wanted three things and were thrilled to be able to check off each one for their October wedding: Stacy Able Photography, Pomp&Bloom and The Commons reception hall. The venue is a unique gathering space located in downtown Columbus, Indiana–a city renowned for its modern architecture. “I knew I wanted something with fine lines and features that tied back to the town’s heritage,” Carlson explains. “The Commons has clean lines with floor to ceiling glass. It is so easy to dress up and make romantic.”

THE DRESS “BHLDN was our one and only shop we considered buying a dress from because we knew that it was 100% my style,” Carlson says. “Our stylist, Madison, was one we will never forget. She was so passionate about finding a dress that fit my style, ensuring my future husband was sure to be ‘wowed’ when I walked down the aisle.” The stylist came through with an intricate Rosa Clara dress, detailed with feathers and beautiful embellishments. “We fell in LOVE and bought it that day!” she says. The bridesmaids’ dresses, also beautifully unique, were purchased from B.loved in Seymour, Indiana.

THE COLORS Besides Carlson’s personal style, other influences served as major inspiration for the overall look and feel of the wedding, including her vendors. “We knew they were creative and could execute the vision we had,” Carlson says. However, it was a Maggie Austen watercolor cake featured in the New York Times that inspired her palette. The cake design featured a romantic mix of navy and cranberry–the very colors she desired. Together, with the wedding’s eccentric design and sparkly metallic details, the bold colors certainly brought life to the space. Pomp&Bloom designed the fresh floral elements, incorporating gorgeous King Proteas, vintage garden roses, anemone, eucalyptus leaves and a moss wall!

ADVICE FROM THE bride

“Get inspired by everything around you, do not just default to Pinterest! I would say Pinterest was my best friend, but I was mainly inspired by others who influenced our lives!”

THE DÉCOR

SPECIAL TOUCHES

Carlson and her mom set their sights on selecting just the right details needed to dress up the venue’s large, clean space. “Growing up as a Zeller we consider animal print, fur and metallic as basics!” Carlson says. “My vision slightly changed after getting my dress, but I knew we needed metallic gold, silver and bold flowers to make our big day feel different.” Sequin tablecloths, fur pillows, mercury glass and Ellis Events gold chairs provided the colorful and individualized statement she envisioned. Her mom, in fact, really stepped in when it came to planning, ensuring every detail was covered (including wearing her grandparent’s fraternity and sorority pins). Brad’s mom invested many creative hours as well, crafting the colorful, handmade pom poms thrown by guests.

Because they were living in Columbus, Ohio while planning a wedding in Columbus, Indiana, Carlson and Brad had to put complete faith in the vendors they selected, but the results speak for themselves. Icing on the Cake by Kristina infused their beloved watercolor design into the cake and Ashlynn Leigh Cakes designed cupcakes as well. Harrison Lake Country Club, longstanding friends of the couple’s family, held the rehearsal dinner and successfully catered the reception without access to a full kitchen. Even Carlson’s cousin, owner of a Chicago brewery, provided craft beer so tasty, it only lasted half the reception. Carlson says, “It was a special touch that is hard to top!”

Easy Essentials

HOW TO WORK WITH A RENTAL COMPANY FOR YOUR WEDDING

M

any brides out there would agree that some aspects of wedding planning can be confusing, especially when it comes to rentals. Figuring out what to rent and who to rent with can be a challenge. The good news is, getting everything you need for your big day doesn’t have to be difficult! Rental companies are easy to work with and can provide you with many items you may want or need. Nearly every bride will find herself having to rent something for her wedding. From the chairs, tables and tents to details like napkins and flatware, it can be daunting to figure out how to handle your rentals but, we assure you, the process can be painless. Armed with a little prioritization, research and organization, a soon-to-be bride will be on her way to a stress-free rental experience.

18

WEDDINGDAY

Know Your Needs

Before renting anything, there are some essential questions every bride should ask herself. To start things off right, you’ll want to know what items are already being provided by your venue or caterer prior to putting money down on rentals. These vendors may already have what you need so book them first in order to take advantage of this. Molly Davidson from Burns Rent-Alls advises that you, “Allow yourself plenty of time to meet with your Event Specialist on several occasions, choose an inspiration and begin booking rental items, coordinating what items other vendors such as DJs and caterers will need. Planning your wedding can be stressful but starting early ensures that you can have fun and enjoy the process!” Before making a list of rental items ask yourself some of these questions: What type and how many chairs do I need? What type and number of tables do I need? Does my venue already provide furniture or other items I may need? What type and color of linens, flatware, etc. do I want? What is my budget for rentals? Do I need my rentals delivered? Who will return my rentals?

Know Your Rental Company

Deciding which company to go with can be tough, depending on what you're renting and how many guests you are accommodating. You will want to ask the questions below to ensure that you are renting from a company that’s right for your needs. Each company’s rental items and prices will vary. Gina Glas of A Classic Party Rental says, “Our chairs range from $1 to $9 and our linen starts at around $7 to $30 so there is something for everyone. We recommend choosing what is most important to you first.” Letting your rental company know your wish list is essential. They may be able to suggest which items to spend more money on or be able to recommend items that fit your budget and still fulfill your needs. Here are some imperative questions to ask any company you want to rent from: How many people can you provide tables and chairs for? When do I need to have the rentals paid for? How far in advance should I book my rentals? Will you deliver and what are your charges for that service? Will you set up my rentals and what are your charges for that service? Can I change my order after it has been placed? Do you offer an equipment protection plan in case of damage or loss? Is there a cancellation fee?

The Contract

Understanding what to expect from a rental company is smart. Each contract will be different but most share a few basic agreements every bride will want to know. “Make sure you have reviewed your contract with your caterer and venue to ensure you have rented everything you will need,” suggests Gina. “The rental process is a team effort!” Keep in mind that rental companies are here to help you. Contracts aren’t made to bind you into things you do not want but to ensure that you get everything you need on your special day. Here is an easy guide to the contract process: I: The contract will usually require you put down a deposit. This will typically range from 25% to 30% and be non-refundable. In light of this, make sure you do your research and feel confident about the company before you put the deposit down. Most companies will want this deposit at least six months before the event in order to have reserves on every item you need.

II: Rental companies may have an option to add insurance to your plan. It may be a savvy idea to go ahead and add this on, as you never know what can get broken or lost. There is no need to add worry to your wedding day! It is easier to pay an insurance fee rather than pay a large and unexpected out-of-pocket expense later. III: Most companies will allow you to change the numbers of items you’ve reserved but, when it comes to adding extra rentals, they will require a good amount of notice (a few weeks). In terms of the amount of rentals, it is better to start by giving the highest number of guests you expect, because it is easier to take off rental items than to add them. That way, if anyone decides to show up last minute, you are covered! IV: It is important to know whether or not you need delivery and/ or pickup services, as rental companies may have fees for these services. Also, some companies may set up and tear down items like tents, tables, etc. as part of your rental cost, while others charge for these services. Setups and teardowns are not included in delivery fees, so make sure you state whether or not these are needed. Another important note is that some companies will deliver to the nearest points that they can get to for your event, meaning they will deliver to the point that their vehicles can reach. Molly says, “Burns recommends that brides have a venue or location decided, specifications of items they will need and times that we will have access to the venue or location, in order to deliver and setup items as well as take down after the wedding.” It is always good to organize the details of delivery prior to your wedding day. That way, there are fewer stresses! V: Pay attention to when your rentals need to be returned and how you are going to return them. Rental companies may charge you for not returning the rentals on time or returning them uncleaned. For instance, linens and flatware may have to be returned without food on them. It is the job of a rental company to ensure that you have everything you need for your wedding day. They are a one-stop shop for many essentials that you can’t do without! Know your needs and convey them to your rental company. For celebrations large and small, rental companies can provide everything that you need and desire.

AN INDIAN SUMMER STYLE SHOOT

CHRISTA HITCHCOCK PHOTOGRAPHY

Inspired by the loveliness of an Indian Summer–those late fall days when memories of warmer times still linger and cooler evenings are felt–Christa of Christa Hitchcock Photography found herself drawn to the idea of a stylized wedding complete with seasonal hues and flowing, feminine textures. She wanted the mood to be warm and ethereal with a touch of whimsy and grace. New to the Indianapolis area, she turned to Sarah Agee of Plum & Poppy Weddings who connected her with additional community vendors. The beautiful grounds of Traders Point Creamery in Zionsville, Indiana provided the perfect complement to the organic nature of the shoot. Antique nesting tables and touches of natural materials like wood, marble, gold and glass paired beautifully with the earthy, outdoor space–the gold accents being reminiscent of a golden sunset on a fall horizon. Autumn Keller of Isibeal Studio captured the romantic mood with two different bouquets, lush greens and vibrant blooms draped gently across the tables. The warm palette was a nod to the changing season while deeper hues added a richness to the overall peach and blush theme, reflected in the stunning florals and gowns.

FEATURED WEDDING

SARAH & JAKE AGEE

When a wedding planner bride plans her own wedding, you can bet the details will be nothing short of exquisite. Sarah and Jake met online and their journey as an engaged couple began on one very special trip to Keystone, Colorado. After sharing dinner and dessert by fire at a beautiful ranch they were staying at, Jake proposed to Sarah on one knee, beneath the stars. As a professional wedding planner and owner of Plum & Poppy Weddings, an Indianapolis based wedding design, planning and coordination company, Sarah’s schedule was understandably packed, leaving her with a single open weekend and just enough time afterward for a honeymoon. Armed with her precious date in mind, the search for Michigan-based destination wedding venues began.

THE PLANNING Like many brides, Sarah had a few initial ideas that soon evolved as planning took shape. Her unique expertise, however, allowed her to use many of her own original visions not found on sites such as Pinterest. The same tools she uses for her clients, as well as the vendor relationships she had formed over the years, were also very helpful in her planning process. A bonus was she could easily select from the list of vendors she loved!

THE DRESS Sarah’s sights were initially set on a Hayley Paige gown. However, she realized the beloved designer she adored on other brides was slightly edgier than what she envisioned for herself. She instead fell in love with an Amsale Dress from Marie Gabriel Couture in Indianapolis. “Amsale is timeless elegance and just my style!” she says. “It was the perfect fit!”

THE FLORAL Sarah planned a design centered around the floral, with the only color element being the flowers. “I wanted everything else to be gold and ivory to make a timeless and elegant palette for the flowers to be shown on,” Sarah says. Accent Floral Design LLC designed the lush bouquets and sweet floral accents using Juliet Garden Roses, ranunculus, hops and Blushing Bride Protea. Coral Charm Peonies, the bride’s favorite flower, were also infused throughout. “Even though they are out of season, my fantastic florist was able to make it happen,” Sarah says.

THE VENUE After a challenging first two weeks spent trying to find the perfect spot (while holding back some worried tears!), Sarah found Chippewa Hotel Waterfront. Knowing all too well the importance of having a backup plan, she loved that the venue would be perfect, rain or shine, its beautiful, blank canvas feel and breathtaking views.

THE DÉCOR Everything included in Sarah and Jake’s big day was a reflection of their personal taste. From the Violet Vintage candlesticks and flatware adorning the tables to the beautiful, textured linens, provided by LGi Linens, no detail was left behind. The tablescapes impressed further with sparkling glass chargers, faceted, goldcoated glasses, glowing votives, fresh fruit, drapings of florals and simply gorgeous centerpieces. Each guest was also greeted with a custom, laser-cut place card from Just Invite Me. “I am a classically trained chef, so the food and drinks were very important to me,” Sarah says. “But since I’ve owned a wedding planning business for the last five years, the way it was presented and the attention to detail was incredibly important to me as well! I wanted to ensure every detail was special, down to the gold flatware and local favors.” Another item close to Sarah’s heart were the couple’s chairs, provided by A Classic Party Rental out of Indianapolis, IN. The small, added detail of the interwoven fabric was her own creation, even though she shies away from most D.I.Y. projects (preferring to leave those to professionals)!

With her own wedding planning behind her, Sarah can now appreciate the role she has served for many of her brides over the years. For her own support, she turned to Beth McHugh at Plum & Poppy Weddings to help her with her special day. “I am a wedding planner and I had a coordinator as well,” Sarah says. “I think everyone deserves to have someone coordinate their day so they can relax with family & friends!”

THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name

AFTER THE WEDDING

Y

our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.

1. GET THE ORIGINAL

3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE

5. UPDATE YOUR BANK

Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.

The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.

2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL

4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME

6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME

If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.

When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.

MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

Can you imagine? A young couple jumps town in a small plane to wed each other secretly. The woman glows at the thought of jetting off to marry the man of her dreams. The breeze rustles across the tarmac (and the groom’s great 1960’s-esque hair) as they walk hand in hand, warmed by the setting sun and silhouetted by their gorgeous getaway plane. Sounds quite perfect, if you ask us! For Jillian Keller of Frame Worthy Events, this is the story she envisioned and brought to life. Jillian, along with her team of talented vendors, aimed to capture the intimate,“oh my gosh, I can’t believe we just did this!” vibe without sacrificing the airy feel the unique venue provided. They achieved this with a warm, fall palette of red, navy and mustard yellow coupled with a retro flare. The bride’s beehive-styled hair, birdcage veil and the old suitcases were a nod to the retro while the warm palette was echoed in the florals and beautiful, Parisian-inspired picnic foods. The high-low, tea length bridal gown makes perfect sense for a jet-setting bride, and we love how this bold fashion choice works for today’s bride and allows her to show off her stunning shoes! What more could a girl ask for?

WEDDINGDAY 49

FINDING THE RIGHT LOCATION FOR YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION Engagement sessions can be so much fun, but half the job is just figuring out where to shoot. As a wedding photographer, nearly every engaged couple asks me for my suggestions on where to photograph their engagement session.

The first thing I ask my couples when they’re struggling with a location is if there’s a place that holds a special connection to their relationship. Where did you go on your first date? Where was your first kiss? Where did you meet? Your engagement photos tell the story of how you two came to be in the first place, so going back to the beginning and revisiting those special moments can be a beautiful addition. If none of those questions surface a place you want to photograph at, then think about what you enjoy doing in your spare time together. Do you go for long car rides? Slow dance in the kitchen? Read books together? Determine those things and then recreate them in part of your engagement photos. The second thing you need to do is determine your couple style. Finding your couple style will help to add more dimension in your photographs. It’ll help you know what additional environment to look for and it will also give you an idea on what to wear.

Photography & Content by Joelle Arner of Joelle Elizabeth Photography

Are you... CITY LOVERS Act like tourists and see the sights of your own city or visit a city you’ve always wanted to see together. In the Midwest, Chicago has numerous locations for you to utilize in your engagement photos! Use beautiful skylines as backdrops, visit fun attractions like Navy Pier and the Bean, or see the city from above by climbing to the top roof of a parking garage or visiting the Sears Tower.

ADVENTURE SEEKERS Figure out your scale of adventure (from amusement parks to sky-diving) and then look at your options. Depending on what season it is, your choices may be limited but there’s always something. If it’s winter, consider going snowboarding. Is it summer? Go for a hot air balloon ride!

HAPPY HIPSTERS Think about visiting a camping ground and setting up camp. Build a bonfire, cozy up, and enjoy hot chocolate together. Do either of you play a portable musical instrument? Incorporate that into the shoot as well!

JOELLE ELIZABETH PHOTOGRAPHY

CLASSIC ROMANTICS Enjoy a walk on the beach, go for a swim, or relax together in a canoe. You can also visit nearby botanical gardens. Greenhouse engagement photos are romantic and provide gorgeous backgrounds! If you want to be extra romantic, you can put together a candlelit dinner and string up Christmas lights on your patio.

AN EDGY COUPLE Do you bike together? Use your motorcycle as a prop. Use graffiti walls as backdrops, visit abandoned buildings (with care), or hit up a local burger restaurant and enjoy some food.

Another option for your engagement photos is to look at places on your bucket list. If it’s within your budget, take a trip and find a photographer in the area who can take some photos for you! They’ll know the area and can suggest places you may not know about. If you’re on a budget that doesn’t allow for additional expenses, you can still make things fun! Make a picnic lunch and eat it in your backyard. If you have pets then add them into the shoot for more personality (after all, they’re a part of your story, too!). The key is to find something that showcases your personality and shares a part of your love story. Remember, your engagement photos don’t have to be like everyone else’s because your story isn’t the same as anyone else’s. Allow yourself to think outside the box and create an engagement shoot that reflects you. That mindset will leave you with photos and memories to last a lifetime.

WHY THESE CLASSIC VENUES ARE A BRIDE’S BEST FRIEND

JW MARRIOTT INDIANAPOLIS Jessica Strickland Photography 54 WEDDINGDAY

THE ALEXANDER Jessica Strickland Photography

It’s going to be your perfect day. Just perfect! And beautiful! And fun! And don’t forget the weather–that will need to be gorgeous, too! There’s no doubt these are just some of the expectations swirling through the minds of brides when facing the wedding planning process head-on. So, where in the world do you begin? For many, choosing the perfect space to house all the day’s love and happiness, food and drinks, family and friends, and–of course–dancing the night away is the first step. After all, it’s that very place that will be featured in many of your photos, wowing your guests, setting the tone for the day’s festivities and, ultimately, providing the services you are seeking and paying for! When it comes to choosing the right venue, some couples have their hearts set on a space that will allow their personalities to shine. Some want what’s classic and traditional. The D.I.Y.-ers out there love the idea of doing everything themselves, and for others, an allinclusive venue is the way to go. While one bride dreams of a grand space, another craves a cozier setting. The reasons behind choosing a venue are clearly countless and with so many venue options out there, it’s important to know what it is you are getting, before making that all-important decision. To help, we are zeroing in on the reasons why banquet halls, ballrooms and hotels continue to check the boxes on many brides’ lists. While they are a classic type of venue, they continue to attract many types of brides. Read on to learn more about their appeal and how they continue to stand the test of time.

CONRAD INDIANAPOLIS Esther Boston Photography

Convenience of accommodations Do you ever wish you could just hop into bed after a wedding or big event? Well, with these venues you can sometimes do just that! Banquet halls or ballrooms affiliated with hotels or a bed and breakfast often offer room blocks, making the celebration that much more convenient and easy for the bride, groom and their guests, especially those from out of town.

Typically, “all-inclusive” includes all the vendors, coordination and professional staff it takes to plan the entire scope of a wedding. At some venues, it may go so far as to include everything except the bride and groom! It is worth going through the details with a member of the sales team to ensure you are clear on everything this entails. It is up to you to decide if you will be satisfied with the end results. For example, are you getting the best deal with the options included or it better to go with individual vendors? Are you saving just time, money, or both? Take note that

extra fees may or may not be included, so make sure you comb through the details carefully. Whether you are someone who knows, hands down, you want your venue to take care of everything (think linens, tables, chairs, napkins, projectors, lighting, gourmet catering and more!) or you are unsure, it might be nice to know you have options with this category of venues! Also, if you would like certain offerings like linens and chair coverings, but you prefer to use your own cake vendor, many venues will work with you by offering customizable options.

COMMUNITY LIFE CENTER Jeremy Haynes Photography

Outdoor can be an option Do you dream of a lush garden setting or an outdoor ceremony, but fear what Mother Nature might decide to do on your big day? A banquet hall, ballroom or hotel with an outdoor space might be just the venue you need. The space might be available for a ceremony, extra seating, mingling, cocktail festivities or all of the above. Check with your venue to see what they offer and find out what their rain plan is, if they do allow for something significant like a ceremony or cocktail hour. For those who prefer variation in their wedding day scenery, moving from a ballroom to a rotunda to a courtyard can add interest, different places for guests to mingle, mini vignettes for photography or a place to escape with the groom for a moment of fresh air!

Variety Let’s face it, no two banquet halls, ballrooms or hotels are exactly alike. The best part about this category is the variety of venues available. Each has its own characteristics that makes them unique and sets them apart. If you dream of a historic, vintage space, you can find an established venue with tons of character that matches your tastes. If a modern space is what you desire, a sleeker building with clean lines might be just the inspiration you need to plan the rest of your dream wedding. Look at online galleries to get a sense of the banquet hall, ballroom or hotel space or visit in person, if you can, to get a first-hand look at the details and sense of atmosphere.

Size can vary

BANQUET HALLS, BALLROOMS & HOTELS // Venues We Love

Whether it is an intimate gathering or a large celebration, most banquet hall, ballroom and hotel venues have the ability to not only house various sizes of events but also customize their packages accordingly. Ballrooms can be transformed to fit a certain theme or style and larger rooms within banquet halls and hotels can be closed off to create a more intimate setting. The versatility involved is also important as RSVPs change last minute. A large venue with flexibility can more easily add a table of ten with matching linens and chairs!

Meeting your needs These venues are dedicated to making your dream wedding come to life, whether it be the perfect color of linen, location of dance floor, right style of chairs or adding specialty glassware. Banquet halls, ballrooms and hotels are designed to accommodate. They provide classic and timeless atmospheres that simply ooze the feeling of a special celebration! Whether your look is fancy and glamorous or simple and timeless, the onsite coordinators and venue staff will guide you in deciding on all the pretty details!

BANQUET HALLS, BALLROOMS & HOTELS // Venues We Love

Blank canvas appeal Banquet halls, ballrooms and hotels exist to suit the needs and tastes of many different people. It’s no wonder that they are designed the way they are, allowing a couple to really incorporate their own tastes in terms of color palette, floral, table arrangement, lighting and more. While some do have a distinct décor and style, others can have a more neutral, but still beautiful space to play with. It’s amazing how the space can look one way for one wedding and then be completely re-vamped for another wedding the very next night. Some may even have various rooms to choose from with entirely different looks. The bottom line is, if the building itself isn’t exactly unique, you can still achieve that distinct look, feel and style you want in the venue space. Maybe ask to review photos of all the different weddings that have taken place there, to help you visualize the design you are going for. nary Photography

TEL Angel Ca OMNI SEVERIN HO

Decorating is a breeze The options for décor can vary from one venue to the next, but often a bride can choose from the venue’s offerings, whether it be linens, napkins, flatware, candles, etc. while adding her own touch with centerpieces and floral, leaving fewer details to worry about. Dependent on the size of the venue, some may have exclusive providers of both floral and décor so, again, it is up to you to review the details and decide which venue meets your needs. An added convenience is that setup and teardown is also often included, leaving more time to relax and soak in what really matters both before and after the big day! If a bride is adding personalized decorations or has her own appointed florist, a decorating time is typically allotted the morning of.

Considering all the countless hours involved in planning a wedding, large or small, keep in mind that wedding planners and coordinators are a major help in the planning process. What’s great about these professionals is it is their job to know what you want for your big day and then make it happen! Armed with tips, timelines and emergency items in tote, they thrive on efficiency and covering every single detail. Especially if you are someone with a busy life as it is, they can come to the rescue with their know-how, experience and professionalism. What’s great about an in-house planner or coordinator is that they are well connected with vendors who are affiliated with the venue and have planned and executed many events in the space before. Their familiarity will be priceless and it is likely they have the best advice in terms of what will work best in that space. Check with the venue to see how often you will meet with the planner and the extent to which they are involved.

HOW AN EXECUTIVE CHEF PLANNED HER OWN TASTEFUL WEDDING

Rachanee Keovorabouth-Teipen is no stranger to food. She grew up in what she describes as an “adventurous food environment encompassing her Thai heritage.” It wasn’t a surprise, then, that food would one day be at the center of her universe, her “life’s passion.” With a background rich in culinary experience, awards and recognition, her creative nature and passion for what she does is certainly evident in her role as Executive Chef at Thomas Caterers of Distinction. Located in Indianapolis, Thomas Caterers has become the most nationally recognized catering company in Indiana, thanks to their quality reputation, service excellence and cutting-edge menus.

A CAKE ON DISPLAY For her show-stopping cake, the bride turned to her best friend and groomsman, Todd Kennedy. Once a pastry chef for Thomas Caterers, Todd is now designing cakes in New York. ”He is the most talented cake maker and sugar flower artist I’ve ever met” Rachanee says. “I let him design the cake and surprise me because I knew his best work comes from his own artistic ideas.” His hard work paid off. After hand-making every single flower and leaf in New York, he packed the precious cargo into his carry-on. He made the cake in Indianapolis and, just two days before the wedding, he revamped his design, making the fondant look like wood grain. The bride and groom hosted a private viewing of the cake and, needless to say, there were waterworks!

THE PLANNING Even someone immersed in the wedding industry can be a bit overwhelmed when it comes to planning his or her own big day! Rachanee initially struggled to make those all-important decisions. Fortunately, Thomas Caterers’ owner, Kelly Early, took notice and helped to gently steer her in the decision-making process while taking her overall wishes and vision into account. “Food is always an inspiration to me so I wanted the wedding to be about the food and to have food aspects throughout,” Rachanee says. Using the brand new Black Iris Estate, a Thomas Caterers venue, as the space to host their special day and, of course, showcasing Thomas Caterers’ food were both easy decisions. “I have worked here for over ten years and my family and friends have never had a chance to experience what I do for a living,” she says. “So I wanted to wow them with all of our food and service.”

THE FOOD Selecting food items wasn’t the difficult part for Rachanee. It was that she wanted too much and then needed to cross items off her list to ease the burden on the kitchen staff! “I basically chose some new items I came up with earlier in the year, picked some favorites and added some favorite items that I knew the groom would like,” she says. “I also wanted to showcase different innovative techniques that we do in station form.” The pre-reception highlights included fountains of infused water for the guests to drink from, cocktail popsicles passed to guests on their walk into the ballroom and mouth-watering hors d’oeuvres. For display, the bride chose a Thai-inspired beef salad tree which incorporated a little of her heritage. The reception also featured two food action stations. One showcased beef bone marrow on crostini with a variety of sea salts and the other featured shrimp and grits smoked in front of guests. Wedding guests had a choice between a watermelon salad or a grilled romaine salad and dinner options were a Deconstructed Beef Tenderloin, Miso Butter Sea Bass, Vincotto Bacon Jam Chicken or Vegan Corn Fritters with Indian red rice. For the younger guests, fun pizza puffs kids meals were served. The attention to detail continued with the grissini breads which were placed into little vases to act as centerpieces along with the flowers. The dinner breads were modified as well, smartly branded with a “T” using, you guessed it, a real branding iron! A local, cultured butter sprinkled with gray sea salt was both charming and a nod to the couple’s color palette. Not a fan of cake? Rachanee had that covered too, with a fun, interactive dessert cart that included their favorites: mini fruit tarts, chocolate-covered strawberries, monogrammed mini apple pie lollipops and mini butterscotch éclairs. And if this didn’t tickle your palate, the celebration continued with two late night stages of food plus a whiskey and cigar bar! Let’s just say that “Liquid Nitrogen Vanilla Ice Cream with Nitro Orange Sherbet” (the groom’s favorite) was the second stage of late night food!

A Chef ’s Advice to Brides Being an executive chef, Rachanee knows the importance of food all too well, especially for a couple’s big day. She has some great insight we think any bride would appreciate. Read on for more valuable tips!

NOW THAT YOU HAVE PLANNED YOUR OWN WEDDING, WHAT DO YOU HAVE IN TERMS OF ADVICE TO GIVE TO BRIDES? “It is definitely stressful. Having a wedding planner is crucial. You can’t take on too much, or you will be so overwhelmed. Do as much as you can far out, so there is not a lot of last minute stresses. Try to remember to enjoy the special moments. I see so many brides and families get so stressed out during this process. Sometimes people forget what this really is about. It’s about the celebration of the couple.”

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE SPECIFIC FOR BRIDES IN TERMS OF CATERING AND FOOD FOR THEIR WEDDINGS? “Don’t skimp out on the food! Make sure your guests don’t leave hungry. Yes, décor and flowers are all-important but food is just as important, and there are so many fun ways to incorporate food into your wedding. Don’t get so caught up in traditions or what’s “normal.” Who says you can’t have two salads or two late nights? Do what makes you happy!”

WHAT SHOULD A BRIDE KEEP IN MIND WHEN SHE IS FORMULATING HER WEDDING MENU? “Don’t be so afraid of what you think others will think. This is your big night to showcase your favorite meal! So many times, I have clients that come into our tasting room, afraid that their guests might not like fish or pork and what not…The food should be exciting, not boring. It should exemplify your favorite foods and maybe tell a story of your relationship or your journey together. It makes it more personal and more of an experience for everyone.”

SHOULD A BRIDE PUT TRUST INTO A CATERER AND REMAIN MORE HANDS-OFF? “I guess that depends on the caterer. With Thomas Caterers, I would definitely say so. Let us do what we know how to do well. I mean, you wouldn’t tell a doctor how to operate, right? That’s how I look at it.”

IN LOVE AT THE LODGE // Cover Shoot

THE VISION In today’s world, wedding design is going far beyond a single color or texture. More and more brides are choosing their very own style–their own theme. After partnering with Jodie Stansbury of Aisle Ready Events, we began to swoon over the idea of our own look: a slightly rustic, raw and natural cover shoot with a lodgelike feel. “When researching photos of lodges and lodge décor, we noticed a lot of Navajo patterns being used in the textiles,” Jodie says. “This pattern helped bring in the Sedona twist.” The vision of warm, soft colors and natural elements such as wood, stone, patterned pillows and even antlers had us, well, quite hooked!

THE VENUE “When looking for a venue I knew I wanted something that had natural wood elements,” says Jodie. “I wanted to stay away from the ‘barn’ venues in fear that they would come off too rustic.” The Barn at Bay Horse Inn was a match made in heaven. Stunning elements such as raw wood textures, wooden farm tables, cross back chairs and chic, comfortable furniture were the very elements we needed, while the large stone fireplace served as the perfect spot for our cozy and romantic lounge area.

GABRIELLE CHEIKH PHOTOGRAPHY

WEDDINGDAY 69

THE DÉCOR Featuring a colorful but muted lodge-inspired palette, the décor offered hints of Sedona and Navajo-inspired details throughout. In lieu of paper, we loved the idea of using geodes for the table numbers and agate slices for the place cards. The farm table, which is very trendy right now, was the perfect backdrop for our natural tablescape. Textured, neutral linens and earth-toned chargers were provided by LGi Linens, while a table runner from Aisle Ready Events blanketed the table with its gorgeous simplicity. Glassware and flatware from A Classic Party Rental, along with peeks of gold antlers–a nod to the look and feel of the lodge–rounded out the cozy tablescape.“Our goal was to have some elements in the shoot that any bride would love, whether it was the rustic elements or the dresses or the flowers,” Jodie says. “There was something in it to appeal to everyone.”

THE LOOK

THE FLORAL

Our model wore Blue Willow by Anne Barge pieces, provided by The Wedding Studio. “The main look we were going for was a heavy, thick lace with some creative lines and accents,” Jodie says. “The dresses were head to toe lace but had beautiful lines in the bodice that gave a unique touch.” The full ball gown skirt by Martina Liana, also provided by The Wedding Studio, served as a stunning two-toned option that was both soft and gorgeously textured. Each look was styled with Kendra Scott jewelry, showcasing natural geode stones and interesting lines. Leanna Grinsell from Karen Hall and Co. was given full range with hair and makeup, providing a gorgeously glowing and natural feel that fit each unique bridal style.

Wildwood Floral Co. centered their design around the Protea because of the unique texture it brought to the bouquet and centerpieces. The unrefined, natural feeling was achieved by layering in even more textures, thanks to a variety of florals. Foraged grasses, ranunculus, spray roses, standard roses, garden roses, stock, Hypericum Berries, privet berries, Nandina, Astrantia and genestra added to the organic feel beautifully.

THE CAKE

THE STATIONERY

Classic Cakes created a very unique design, incorporating our muted colors and natural elements perfectly. The result? A deliciously done, one-of-a-kind cake complete with soft colors and a Navajo-inspired pattern!

We gave Westwood Paper Co. free creative range to interpret our inspiration and create a lodge-inspired suite. They did so with a quaint woodland design, highlighting the warm and rustic lodge theme. Love Notes Calligraphy applied the delicate touches of calligraphy.

STYLE SHOOT

A Feminine, Romantic Boudoir Style Shoot Many photographers today are embracing the trend of boudoir photography. While finding the right dress is understandably forefront in the minds of brides, they now have boudoir photography to help them with the art of, well, undressing. We love that this sensual side of the bride is being photographed in the most unique and stunning ways, and captures a special time in her life that can be gifted to her oh-so-lucky groom! Shelby Ferguson of The Day’s Design and Ashley of Ashley Slater Photography teamed up to reveal this sensual, yet soft side of the bride. “Ashley Slater came up with the concept,” Shelby says. “She wanted a really romantic and feminine shoot that showcased the sensual side of being a woman with bridal boudoir. But we wanted to emphasize that boudoir isn’t a raunchy and distasteful idea, but instead it’s really delicate and romantic.”

Their vision led them to the Park Trades Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The space offered beautiful windows, great lighting and the blank canvas they sought. “It felt very industrial but timeless and it contrasted just the right amount with our really soft and romantic idea,” Shelby says. Decorating the space with just the right elements helped the pair create the perfect space. “Ashley commissioned a beautiful hand-painted blue backdrop which would serve as the main color,” Shelby says. “She also brought along the settee which needed to feel anchored in the space, so we added the ferns. And then candles were added for romance along with a few other props for styling, such as mirrors and ribbon–all items that one might expect for find in a proper lady’s vanity.” The deconstructed settee also helped to shape the overall feel. Shelby says, “We wanted it to seem as though it had been sitting in the abandoned building for years and plants had just grown into the space.” Soft blooms and bouquets were added as well. Shelby used hellebores, stock and humble carnation blooms and added in a few ferns to tie in the greenery from the settee. The relaxed palette, blue backdrop and the models’ neutral looks allowed them to stay very soft and romantic. “Each of our models were asked to bring a bra and panty set or something similar that was pale or neutral colored,” Shelby says. “We wanted them to be in something that they felt confident in. From there, Spring Sweet loaned us some accessories, veils, robes, etc. that we layered with what the girls had chose to wear.” Sarah Boucher of Glam by Sarah created loose curls and topped off the neutral makeup with long lashes to complete the romantic, feminine look.

ASHLEY SLATER PHOTOGRAPHY

What’s more romantic than good old-fashioned poetry? We love the unique way this team incorporated romantic sayings into their design (we envision the same could be done based on a love letter, beloved card or sentimental piece from the groom). “We sent a couple of poems to Annie of Wildfield Paper Co. and gave her a loose idea of our vision and the florals we would be using,” Shelby explains. “From there, she sent us some beautiful prints and calligraphy.”
