CAITLIN & ETHAN FLATER

After arriving home from a trip to Disney together, Ethan’s plan to propose to Caitlin upon their return was abruptly foiled by bouts of sickness. While the two were still recovering, Ethan managed to pull off his scavenger hunt proposal a few days later, and it made for a very memorable engagement. “There were ten stations and at each one was a paragraph of something he loved about me or a special memory of something we had together,” Caitlin explains. “Finally, the last message led me to him where he was so handsome on one knee.”

THE VENUE It was important to Caitlin that her wedding reflect both her and Ethan. She also knew she wanted to hold her nuptials at the very place she got engaged—her family’s property. She envisioned a classic, romantic and feminine affair that was also lodge-like and included masculine elements. She was confident the place she called home would deliver with plenty of pretty options perfect for the personal look and feel she desired.

THE PLANNING Facing busy work schedules, the two reached out to Monica Richard of Mon Amie Events, as they understood they needed a great wedding planner in order to put them and their families at ease. Also key to their dream team was florist David Strohmeyer of The Empty Vase. Armed with more than a few unique items, including a 1950’s family canoe, eight restored wagon wheel chandeliers, and an eight-foot-tall bronze elk statue, Caitlin knew she had just the right amount of personal touches to reflect her and Ethan’s tastes—and the team she needed to make her dream wedding happen.

THE DRESS With its beautiful lace skirt and timeless design, Caitlin’s custom-made Romona Keveza dress was the exact style she was looking for. “I wanted to be able to move, dance and be comfortable in it!” she says.

THE FLORALS Inspired by the soft hues of blush, pink and ivory, The Empty Vase designed the breathtaking florals complete with roses, peonies, ranunculus, asters, goose neck veronica, pink Majolica spray roses, China Mums, Larkspur, Silver Dollar Eucalyptus, pampas grass, hydrangeas, wisteria blossoms, branches, seasonal flowers and greens.

THE DÉCOR Set against the backdrop of hundreds of beautiful acres that Caitlin’s family and landscaping team had worked tirelessly to perfect, Caitlin and Ethan had all the elements needed for a dreamy summer wedding: charming outdoor elements, an abundance of romantic florals, unique rustic elements and every fine detail considered. “My two favorite things were my family’s canoe hanging down over my parents’ and grandparents’ table, gorgeously draped in flowers and lights and the bronze elk,” Caitlin says.

ADVICE FROM THE bride

Caitlin says, “Enjoy the moments where you are picking things out with your future husband. Relish the moments when you are with your family talking about the wedding...When it’s all said and done, and I think back to the process, I am so thankful for my family and my team. It was really a fun time and we did it in six months!”

WEDDINGDAY 11

WHAT WE

love

Caitlin knew the power of planning. She took her vendor selection seriously and the results speak for themselves. She says, “I really tried to just sit back and enjoy the process and not get overwhelmed and trust that Monica and my team had everything together. That is why you hire wonderful people to work with. I felt relaxed during the entire process.”

M

elissa Mathis of Forever and A Day Events and Design had a vision of something feminine and metallic in her heart. She desired sparkle, all kinds of chic and pink. “I am obsessed with anything glamorous,” she says. The resulting look is as beautiful as it is edgy and enough to make us want to get a shiny tulle dress of our own. In describing the lovely Bianka Bridal gown, she says, “Its low cut, tulle and gems were a perfect feminine touch to this shoot. I wanted something that was feminine, chic and glamorous.” The elegant, curly braid and soft, pink makeup hues added the perfect level of glam to complete the entire look. While the white brick wall and wood floor served as an ideal backdrop, the metallic linen and ghost chairs from The Rental Company added the extra depth needed to really create an impressive atmosphere. The metallic gray and light pink palette is a perfect complement to the florals—comprised of astilbe, roses, ranunculus, tree blossoms, baby eucalyptus and seeded eucalyptus. As for that delicious cake and stunning stationery? The marble, gold, geometric design, metallic calligraphy and soft florals are the embodiment of metallic chic.

THE GOOD BONES behind a great wedding

Hoosier HGTV Star, Mina Starsiak Hawk, Finds Her Happily Ever After, After the Show

20

WEDDINGDAY

You may recognize this stunning bride from the hit HGTV series, Good Bones, a show in which the talented Mina Starsiak (now Starsiak Hawk!) and her mother, Karen, are single-handedly breathing new life into homes across their beloved hometown of Indianapolis. Blending creativity, brains and brawn, their impressive rehabbed properties are true hallmarks of their work. Being fans of the show ourselves, we were giddy with excitement to learn Mina recently got married and we were not surprised to see her wedding was just as gorgeous as one of her stunning remodels! As if planning a wedding wasn’t challenging enough, Mina was able to momentarily trade in her tank top and tool belt for a stunning gown and heels, balance filming and plan one of the most important events in her life—marrying her love, Stephen Hawk. And she seems to have handled it all with as much ease and humor as she does her hands-on profession and reality TV stardom.

STEREOSCOPE PHOTOGRAPHY

As the best guide for the Midwest bride, we thought this was an extra special opportunity to give our readers a glimpse into this Hoosier’s head-turning, Midwest nuptials. Read on for more inside details on Mina’s gorgeously timeless wedding and her inspirational photos!

Q

HOW DID YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND MEET?

A

A mutual friend introduced us is the story he tells. I say I picked him out on Facebook.

Q

HOW DID HE PROPOSE?

A

He sent me on a giant scavenger hunt around the city to all the places we had been on dates, and it ended with me finding him on the 50-yard line of the Colts training camp field. I’m a huge Colts fan!

Q

SO YOU JUST GOT ENGAGED, HOW DID YOU BEGIN THE PLANNING PROCESS?

A

I just jumped in head first. I was starting filming in a few months so had to get it all done before then.

Q

DID YOU ALREADY KNOW WHAT YOU WANTED IN YOUR WEDDING?

A

I had an idea...all light colors (blush, champagne, gold and silver) with the guys in simple black tuxedos… very simple and classic. My venue was so beautiful it didn’t need a ton.

WEDDINGDAY 21

STEREOSCOPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Q A

WHAT INSPIRED YOU? I think I looked at Pinterest a lot to find pictures of the ideas that existed in my mind because I suck at explaining things with just words.

Q

WHAT PLANNING RESOURCES DID YOU USE?

A

My sweet friend, Emily, made me a three ring binder (lol).

Q

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR VENUE?

A

My husband learned of the venue when he was looking for a place for my surprise 30th. We didn’t use if for that because it was too large, but when he mentioned it for the wedding and we went and looked at it, I didn’t even need to see anything else. It was perfect!

Q

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE VENDORS YOU DID?

A

Jacquie's Gourmet Catering was referred to us by 1899. We met with them and did a tasting and were super happy, so we didn’t keep looking. Our DJ was a referral from our photographer, and when we met with him, he and my husband (who is the music guy) just clicked. Mr. Kinetik is his DJ name.

22

WEDDINGDAY

Q

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE YOUR COLOR SCHEME?

A

I wanted something timeless and soft.

Q

LET'S TALK ABOUT THAT DRESS! DID YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR OR DID YOU HAVE TO TRY ON A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT STYLES BEFORE YOU FOUND "THE ONE"?

A

My sweet, amazing friend, Adrienne Love, owns The Wedding Studio and she was my go-to. Literally, as soon as I walked in, the dress on the mannequin was perfect! Turns out that the dress on the mannequin was the same dress that she wore in her wedding the year before (before we were besties). It is the most amazing Romona Keveza gown. I’m a fairly low-maintenance girl, so instead of buying brand new, I just altered her dress a bit, and it fit perfectly.I then had a custom veil made! Always gotta be thinking budget!

Q

WHAT CHALLENGES OR FRUSTRATIONS DID YOU EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT THE WEDDING PROCESS?

A

It was honestly pretty seamless. The hardest part was that I started filming during the whole process, and that was hard to balance at times. The week before, I actually cut my chest with a piece of siding and had to put makeup on it the day of the wedding.

Q

TELL US ABOUT THE SPECIAL OR UNIQUE TOUCHES THROUGHOUT THE WEDDING. WHAT MADE IT SPECIAL TO YOU?

A

Everything just looked magical, and all our family and friends were there. Instead of cake, we did 400 Long’s donuts. We didn’t have a sit-down dinner, we had yummy stations with Chicago-style hot dogs, sliders, mac ‘n cheese and tacos.

Q

WHAT KINDS OF THINGS DID YOU DO YOURSELF? FOR EXAMPLE, DID YOU DO ANY CRAFTS OR TAKE ON ANY PROJECTS FOR THE WEDDING?

A

We pulled together the centerpieces (which my wedding planner that we hired later added some amazing stuff to) and made the bridesmaids' bouquets out of fake white roses and hydrangeas. I found an amazing tulle skirt for our circular donut table on Etsy.

Q

WHAT FLOWERS WERE USED IN YOUR BOUQUETS AND CENTERPIECES?

A

Q A

The bridesmaids’ bouquets we made and were fake. My bouquet and the table flowers were just wholesale that my planner pulled together. NOW THAT YOU'VE PLANNED AND HAD A WEDDING, WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER BRIDES? Nothing is that deep. It’s all just for one day. So don’t freak out. Don’t stress. Just enjoy it, and let your friends and family do the same. Also, do what YOU want, not what others want. We wanted fun food, not a sit-down dinner, and some of the older guests didn’t dig it as much.

Q

DID YOU HAVE A WEDDING HASHTAG?

A

#gohawkyourself (my new last name is Hawk)

Q

WHAT ARE A FEW THINGS YOUR GUESTS WILL REMEMBER ABOUT YOUR WEDDING?

A

The 400 Long’s donuts in a giant pile.

FEATURED WEDDING

NEHA PATEL & CHRIS CLARK Neha and Chris met as undergrads at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. When Neha was accepted to the Indiana University School of Medicine, the two were brought back to her home state where she would later host the peacock-inspired nuptials of her dreams.

October 10, 2015 INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA PHOTOGRAPHED BY NATHANIEL EDMUNDS PHOTOGRAPHY 26 WEDDINGDAY

culture meets elegance THE BEAUTY OF TWO WORLDS BECOMING ONE

THE PLANNING With her Hoosier heart set on having two ceremonies—one Hindu and the other Christian to honor Chris and his family’s traditions—Neha approached Tara Steele of Tara Nicole Weddings & Events to help tackle this feat of two ceremonies, a cocktail hour and a reception. As an experienced lead planner in South Asian weddings, Tara knew that careful vendor selection was crucial for this dual-ceremony day, especially with all the logistics involved! She began the process of carefully sourcing each vendor and knew that working closely with decorator Sima Patel of Weddings InStyle would be key to planning Neha’s dream wedding.

THE DRESSES Red and ivory are traditional Hindu wedding ceremony colors, and red is of the utmost significance—often used for special occasions like a birth, festival or marriage. Neha’s stunning deep red, gold and ivory wedding saree was purchased in India by her family. The bride wore an elegantly classic, ivory gown with a lace-up back for her Christian ceremony. For the reception, she wore a purple saree—the perfect complement to the peacock theme.

NATHANIEL EDMUNDS PHOTOGRAPHY

28

WEDDINGDAY

THE VENUE The Conrad’s elegant Vienna Ballroom was the perfect match for the sophisticated, downtown location Neha and Chris were looking for. “They knew they would have a lot of people coming in from out-of-state and the country and needed a location that was easily accessible for all parties,” Tara explains. “Their guest count was around 250 and fit perfectly at the Conrad.”

THE FLORALS “Sima from Weddings InStyle used roses and hydrangeas of different shades for each event. For the Hindu ceremony, she used deep magenta roses with purple hydrangeas,” Tara says. “For the Christian ceremony, she used a beautiful palette of pink and ivory, and for the reception she used magenta roses with purple and green hydrangeas to bring in the peacock theme. Each arrangement was also adorned with peacock feathers for a finishing touch.”

WEDDINGDAY 29

WHAT WE

love

We love that this bride thought out-ofthe-box with her décor and chose a unique theme that truly inspired her. “Not many people would do a peacock colored wedding in the Conrad’s ivory and red ballroom,” says Tara. “It was unique and something different for their space. Also, I think everyone will remember the Coke toast in the place of the champagne toast. Most importantly though, we hope everyone remembers how great the Indian food was!”

NATHANIEL EDMUNDS PHOTOGRAPHY

30

SPECIAL TOUCHES

THE DÉCOR

Two extra special touches at this #patelwedsclark wedding were the gorgeous invitations and paper items, creatively designed by the bride herself and the Coke bottle favors that doubled as escort cards. Tara explains, “This was a nod to an Emory tradition of doing a ‘Coke Toast’ on the first day of undergrad. It was very important to her that we make this happen. We used Coke, Diet Coke, and then two Indian Cokes: Thumbs Up and Limca. It was a sweet way to honor where their romance started.”

To complement her love of peacocks, Neha chose a gorgeous palette infused with nods to her favorite animal. While her overall look was heavily influenced by her Indian traditions, she incorporated personal touches throughout the day and let Chris select the colors for the Christian ceremony. She then worked closely with Tara and Sima on the remaining details. The result? Rich reds, pinks and ivories, three stunning bridal looks, gorgeous centerpieces graced with feathers and unique party favors reflecting a favorite Emory tradition.

The Guide to Finding Your Perfect Bridal Beauty Team

ABOUT THE AUTHOR // Andi Sherman, Something Blue Stylists Andi, Indiana native and owner of Something Blue Stylists, started her on-location bridal hair and makeup company while living in Southern California in 2006. Sarah and Rachel Wedding Photographers

The world of bridal beauty can seem a bit overwhelming at first and many aren’t even sure where to start. After 15 years in the bridal beauty industry, I think there are five key elements when choosing the team that is right for you.

1. RECOMMENDATIONS Ask your wedding vendors, especially your planner and photographer, who they like to refer their clients to. Lots of planners have a list of preferred vendors that they have worked with numerous times that have consistently proven themselves to be reliable. Cassie Conforti of Conforti Photography says “I choose vendors who I know will give my brides a high-end, professional experience, as well as someone who I enjoy working with. I only recommend those I think will help my client achieve the creative vision they have for their wedding.” Sarah Agee of Plum and Poppy Weddings says, “I always try to find out what my bride is looking for first in a vendor, and then I’ll recommend someone that I trust that is specifically suited to meet their individual needs.” 2. DO YOUR RESEARCH (AKA SOME LIGHT STALKING)

4. REACH OUT AND CONNECT

A successful bridal beauty team should have a social media presence which makes it easier for you, as a prospective client, to discover more about them and their style. If you’re seeing only selfies, heavily filtered photos, or just one style of makeup, take note. Just because a person is able to apply makeup on themselves, that in no way measures their ability to apply makeup on others. A professional makeup artist and stylist should have a diverse portfolio and be able to cater to a variety of faces and styles. Selecting an artist or stylist that has a strong portfolio in weddings typically means they are well versed in the delicate logistics that accompany a wedding morning. Frequently, hair and makeup artists are blamed for botched timelines, and most often it is due to lack of experience. Reviews from past clients, a comprehensive, professional website and a strong portfolio in the style that you are looking for are just a few of the key elements you will want to look for when narrowing down your search.

After you’ve narrowed down your search to a few top contenders, reach out to each prospective vendor. You’ll first want to make sure that they are still available on your wedding date. Brides are booking top vendors 12-18 months in advance, so to avoid disappointment, secure your date early! Most artists or stylists require a deposit or retainer to secure your wedding day in their books. If you aren’t ready to pull the trigger quite yet, ask for a quick phone consultation. Keep in mind...this person will be with you for the bulk of your wedding morning. You will want to make sure that you and your artist have a good connection and can imagine having their energy as part of your big day. Stylists and artists should be personable and helpful in answering your questions in a timely manner during their normal business hours.

"A SUCCESSFUL BRIDAL BEAUTY TEAM SHOULD

Sanitation and cleanliness on a wedding morning should be a top priority (I truly cannot stress this enough) and you want to make sure that the team you’ve chosen upholds the same state board regulated sanitation that is required in a salon. Artists should be using new, clean brushes for each client. Makeup brushes cannot be properly cleaned and sanitized between clients, even with the use of alcohol and spot brush cleaners. This is just the bare minimum to ensuring you and your ladies are not being exposed to a contagious illness or dangerous bacteria. Believe me, no one wants pink eye or a staph infection on their honeymoon. Don’t be afraid to ask these questions, as your health and the health of your bridesmaids is what is on the line.

HAVE A SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE WHICH MAKES IT EASIER FOR YOU, AS A PROSPECTIVE CLIENT, TO DISCOVER MORE ABOUT THEM AND THEIR STYLE." 3. DON’T BARGAIN BASEMENT Weddings are expensive. With the average cost of $35,000 in the United States, it’s no wonder that brides are constantly on the look out for ways to keep their wedding on budget. While there are licensed professional artists and stylists out there who are more budgetfriendly, your wedding photos are forever, and how you look in them is forever as well. Any bride that has had the misfortune of hating their wedding day hair and makeup would tell you that hindsight is 20/20 and there was no amount they wouldn’t have paid on the day of to have loved the way they looked.

5. DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK THE DIRTY QUESTIONS

Just like the feeling you had when you found THE dress, you should have the feeling when you discover THE hair and makeup artist for you. A sense of relief and excitement should wash over you after you’ve selected the team that is right for you and your big day. By taking care when selecting your preferred vendors, you are ensuring a smooth, stress-free morning on one of the most memorable days of your life. Happy planning!

hen A Classic Party Rental expanded their inventory this past year, Chung Chow, Event Specialist and Social Media Coordinator for A Classic, thought this presented the perfect opportunity to showcase their new goods in a style shoot that demonstrated how you can achieve two different takes on modern romance with their fabulous, new rentals.

This airy and romantic look pairs real, blank slate appeal with modern, on-trend touches. Chung draped the tables in A Classic’s charcoal and natural Panama linens and added Vineyard crossback chairs, delicate, stemless wine glasses, Elexa flatware and versatile white china—all rentable at A Classic. Candles provided by Meg Catherine Flowers added a delicate touch, while slate West Elm chargers kept the look cool, clean and modern. Other perfectly modern details included acrylic menus and marble place cards by N Rhodes Designs.

50

WEDDINGDAY

Chung wasted no time in planning what resulted in two breathtaking visions, staged at The Ritz Charles’ gorgeous Garden Pavilion in Indianapolis. Her goal? To show clients how to piece together the company’s classics with modern pieces using A Classic Party Rental’s stunning new linens, chairs, bar stools, glassware and flatware.

Partnering with Sophia’s Bridal, Meg Catherine Flowers, and Cory and Jackie Photography, Chung envisioned two bridal looks and a neutral, outdoor backdrop. Graced by soft hues, gorgeous peonies, ranunculus and roses, each look featured the new Vineyard crossback chairs and Panama linens. All we can say is: Brace yourselves for some major pretty!

The second look shares the same overall neutral palette featuring ivory Panama and simple, beige polyester napkins. Pops of color not only brightened the look and feel but allowed the centerpiece to truly take centerstage in the design. White, square plates provided a modern edge and Vineyard crossback chairs and barstools were a perfect match for the outdoor setting.

THE LOOK What’s better than one gown? Two! Chung chose a traditional strapless ball gown and a trendier lace, deep v-neck dress from Sophia’s Bridal. Desiring an overall simple look, makeup was kept light and paired with a messy updo for the ball gown look and slightly deepened for the more sultry second ensemble.

MODERN ROMANCE // Cover Shoot

ROGUE IMAGES PHOTOGRAPHY

THE VISION There are many ways to interpret “modern romance.” For us and our great team of talented vendors, it was a culmination of ideas that resulted in a gorgeously modern mix that was both fresh and full of beautiful summer hues. Hannah Strickler of Design the Day did an excellent job refining the initial vision into one as vibrant and crisp as the sunny day it was shot on.

THE VENUE The Community Life Center was the perfect setting for sunny courtyard views and unique architectural scenes. “The venue was a dream, and I was very lucky we were able to host it outside in the courtyard to make the most out of the natural lighting and the main focus of the Community Life Center—the gorgeous tower!” Hannah says. The tower’s stunning chandeliers were the perfect nod to modern romance and the overall neutral tones of the venue created a wonderful blank slate for our dream team.

THE FLORALS

THE LOOK

“For the ceremony setup, I wanted to focus mostly on greenery and making it very lush, especially since greenery is so trendy right now!” Hannah says. The clear glass urns were another addition to the modern flair. Gina from Pomp&Bloom infused yellow garden roses, white garden roses, white ranunculus, hydrangeas, Veronica, fresh pears and greens. “I wanted the florals to be clean and fresh with a vibrant pop of color,” Gina says. The white and green hues accompanied by a yellow accent lent itself to the perfect color combination—one that was the embodiment of summer.

Our bride wore a stunning dress from Beloved Brides. Its simple elegance, modern silhouette and belt embellished with gray stones was a perfect match for our romantic vision. The bride’s hair was gathered into a modern updo infused with curls and braids, highlighting the gown’s high neck. The look was completed with a Beloved Brides hairpiece and complemented by smoky makeup—a finish that tied into the gray tones. The groom’s polished ensemble also exuded clean, modern vibes.

THE DÉCOR The modern gray tones and silvers infused throughout the decor allowed the fresh summer florals to shine. Other elements that added beautiful texture and dimension included the statement-making velvet linens, silk runners and napkins, A Classic Party Rental Vineyard crossback chairs and crystalline chargers. Hannah says, “The silk runners and napkins really helped emphasize the romantic side as the velvet table linens and silver chargers balanced out the modern end!”
