REBECCA & DANIEL JACOBSON
Rebecca Elayne Dixon met Daniel Jacobson while working on a digital magazine for a class at Ball State University. She wanted to use one of his videos in her project. After graduation, she ran into him at a concert in Indianapolis. “I recognized him by his camera and dark-rimmed glasses.” Rebecca says. “We hit it off right away.” But he was moving to England and she was moving to Florida. But in 2011, he moved back and asked her for help with a website for his video work and romance developed.

THE PROPOSAL
mixing it up A CREATIVE COUPLE THROWS AN URBAN GARDEN PARTY
The two went to a Real Estate concert in St. Louis, Rebecca’s hometown. The couple’s first date had been to see that group perform. During the break before the encore, she asked him if he had gotten any great photos. He put his camera in front of her and began playing a video including footage from the first concert they attended together with text between each video clip telling their story. The final slide said: I love you. He then presented a ring, proposed and she “cried like a baby amongst a few hundred people in the crowd.”

ADVICE FROM THE bride
“Hire a day-of coordinator if you’re planning a larger event. She worked with Sarah from Plum and Poppy. “Sarah kept everything moving and on schedule, and we ended up having 30 extra minutes for dancing at the end of the night because of their hard work and support.”
THE DRESS Rebecca did some online research, discovering designer Love Marley. She ordered a light, flowy dress with vintage-inspired silver beading. Once it arrived, it was love at first sight. “When I tried it on, it made me feel like a boho, ballerina gypsy, which was a dream come true,” she says.
THE COLORS Rebecca wanted a color palette that was timeless and classic and complemented the late spring/early summer season so she picked natural colors such as champagne, white, and sage green, accented with gold and natural textures. 12
WEDDINGDAY
THE DÉCOR The urban summer garden party came together using long farm tables as head tables, accent tables for displaying dÊcor and standing chalk boards for guest messaging, provided by Violet Vintage.
FAVORITE MEMORY Rebecca says there are quite a few, but she likes thinking about pausing to look at guests during the dinner with the music of Sam Cooke playing in the background.
PERREGEAUX WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY
THE THEME The bride and groom wanted to throw an urban garden party and The Indianapolis Arts Center provided the perfect location to see their particular vision become a reality. Rebecca described the setting as intimate and non-traditional with lots of natural greenery and shade. The weather cooperated, allowing an outside reception with access to art galleries and air conditioning.

MIXING IT UP // Featured Wedding
THE CAKE The Scholars Inn Bakehouse in Bloomington created a simple, one-tier carrot cake with buttercream frosting along with red and white velvet cupcakes.
WHAT WE
love
The bride and groom gave handwritten letters to their parents. “It was very special and emotional moment for us because both sets of parents provide such strong examples of marriage and support for one another, says Rebecca.

THE FLORAL
BEST PART OF THE RECEPTION
Amanda at White Heart Blooms foraged a lot of greenery and created centerpieces filled with nigella succulents. The bouquets and arrangements also included white peonies, white spray roses, white lisianthus, poppy pods, dusty miller, hydrangea and various greens. The head tables were adorned with eucalyptus running down the center of the tables.
With both the bride and groom being wedding photographers, they wanted a reception that differed from the others they had seen. Daniel built a custom dance mix with transitions so every song could be enjoyed from beginning to end.
WEDDINGDAY
FUNNIEST MOMENT In a quick speech to guests, Daniel thanked both sets of parents and paid tribute to his mom and dad’s 27 years of marriage. One problem – it actually was 32 years. “His younger sister made sure to call him out on the error!”

Planners and Coordinators and Designers, Oh My! WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU HIRE?
Once upon a time, there were people who helped to plan your wedding and they weren’t called wedding planners. These people were usually mothers, aunts, grandmothers or family friends who assumed responsibility for the behind-the-scenes duties that weddings generally require. It wasn’t a business or a service, but rather a customary tradition that one of the female relatives or friends would take on wedding tasks to alleviate stress from the bride. And they did it for free. Back then, the typical wedding focused on simplicity and tradition. Fast forward to today, and weddings have become extravagant productions heavily influenced by Pinterest, bridal magazines, blogs and celebrity weddings (looking at you, Kim and Kanye). It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact time or cultural influence when weddings became grand scale, but some attribute the shift to when the royal wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer was televised to almost 750 million people. That fairytale wedding is thought to have set the tone for the grandiose weddings we dream of today. Today’s average wedding costs somewhere in the vicinity of $30,000 and usually requires 10-15 wedding professionals. And while some may hire a professional planner because they want a large, swanky wedding, most couples hire one because they simply do not have the time to plan an event of this proportion in between jobs, house hunting, kids, and life’s other obligations. But once the decision is made to hire a professional to assist in the wedding planning, how do you know which type of professional to hire? After all, now couples have the options of coordinators, planners and event designers. And beyond that, they have the options of deciding between full-service planner, partial-service planner, day-of wedding coordination, month-of coordination and à la carte services. It’s difficult to determine which type of vendor and service is the right fit. We spoke with Brooke Tichenor, owner of savoir faire events, a wedding and event planning studio in Carmel, Indiana about which breed of planning professional best fits each bride. 22
WEDDINGDAY
WEDDINGDAY: What is the difference between a planner, coordinator, and designer?
ensuring everything according to plan.
BROOKE: A wedding planner is often hired at the beginning stages
During the research and interview process, it is important that couples ask plenty of questions of the professionals, and that the professional clearly identifies and explains the services they offer.
of planning and is considered to be one of the most involved of the wedding professionals. The planner’s focus is logistics. A planner works alongside the couple from the onset, providing guidance and offering step-by-step expertise, throughout the entire process. A fullservice planner will often begin working with couples at 12 months, and sometimes as early as 18 months out. Some of the more common services a wedding planner offers include assisting with venue selection, vendor referrals, schedules and attending vendor meetings, contract management and negotiation, budget development and oversight, design and styling advice, creation of wedding timelines and planning tools, and day-of execution and orchestration of all wedding day activities. Wedding planner responsibilities vary across the board, and here are a few more services a planner can offer: Guest list preparation and RSVP management Floor plans and guest seating arrangements Procurement of ‘welcome’ baskets, favors, and more Booking and arranging of hotel accommodations Etiquette guidance Travel and honeymoon arrangements The most important role a wedding planner plays is that of liaison between the client and team of vendors – they are the bride and groom’s spokesperson, answering questions, coordinating details, solving issues, and much more on behalf of the client. They are there to make the entire experience a truly enjoyable and memorable one for the client - from piecing together every detail big and small to executing the big picture on the wedding day. Planners are there to alleviate any and all stresses, allowing the bride and groom to not only enjoy their wedding day, but the precious time leading up to it. The ultimate goal for every planner is to hear “I don’t know what I would have done without you!” These words are music to the ears and confirmation of a job well done and a happy couple. Wedding planners are often ideal for busy, working professionals, couples planning weddings from miles away, those lacking in organization or having a knack for details, and sometimes those who simply have no idea where to begin and need a professional to guide them. A wedding designer’s focus is to create the visual aesthetic, the overall look and style of a wedding, and will usually do so with a focus on all five senses. A designer will work with the couple in defining and executing a look and theme specific to their personal vision. Designers may work with a couple in establishing a color story, selecting décor, lighting, stationery elements, fabric treatments, florals, and more. The designer may provide the inspiration, and then contract a team of professionals in every category to provide the specific components needed to create the big picture. There are designers who also offer wedding coordination services for additional fees. A wedding coordinator is hired to seamlessly execute all of the plans the couple has made and to serve as the liaison with all contracted vendors. A coordinator typically begins working with the couple 6-8 weeks out (sometimes even as early as 12 weeks out) whereupon they review all details and logistics with the couple, make introductions with vendors and confirm obligations, gather and review contracts, coordinate and manage ceremony rehearsals, create wedding timelines and planning tools, and oversee and orchestrate all activities on the wedding day–
goes
It is also important to note that venues may have wedding and venue coordinators on their staff. When meeting with venues, the client should receive clarification on exactly what services are provided, and what is/is not included.
Ashley and Aliy Weddings
WEDDINGDAY: Which of your services do you find couples lean most toward? BROOKE: It all comes down to the bride and groom’s individual needs,
but I have seen a good deal of interest in both wedding planning and wedding coordination services. It often depends on right timing and the right circumstances. I have seen many couples decide to take on the planning themselves in the early stages, and then after several months in, decide that a planner and/or coordinator is needed because they have come to realize the level of detail and amount of time needed to plan a wedding. On the other hand, busy, working professionals have come to me at the very beginning, for they know right away they do not have the time needed to plan a wedding.
WEDDINGDAY: What is one or two misconceptions you often hear about hiring a wedding planner? BROOKE: Wedding planners will take over the wedding, not allowing
the couple to make any decisions, and will eventually change the bride and groom’s vision. A wedding planner is there to guide the couple, presenting them with the best options based on their vision and budget, not to make decisions for the bride and groom. A great planner will take the time to listen to their clients, understand their priorities and their wishes, and will guide them to the most suitable professionals - and in doing so, will save the client endless hours of research and headaches. Another misconception is that only wealthy people hire wedding planners. Planners offer packages to meet a wide range of bridal needs. Personalized packages or services are typically offered, and can be tailored to the bride and groom’s individual needs and budget. The couple should not discount the overall value a seasoned professional can provide throughout every stage of the planning process.

THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name
AFTER THE WEDDING
Y
our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.
1. GET THE ORIGINAL
3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE
5. UPDATE YOUR BANK
Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.
The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.
2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL
4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME
6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME
If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.
When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.
MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

Food Trucks:
THE GRAND FINALE TO YOUR WEDDING
Jennifer Van Elk Photography
L
ate-night snacks give a whole new meaning to the term “night cap.” Serving snacks or a late-night meal during the dance reception is no longer considered a trend, but instead serves as a much-needed and much-appreciated interruption to the hours of dancing. As the reception progresses, most people have quickly burned off the 6:00 dinner on the dance floor and have filled up on liquor. It’s practically a scientific fact that cardio plus alcohol equals hungry people. By offering a late-night snack, you are acknowledging that you have taken your guests’ needs and comforts into consideration. It’s also a
subtle way to sober up a few of your guests (your hotel and transportation staff will thank you!). While your guests will certainly welcome any form of free food, hiring a food truck to cater your late-night bite is an avenue worth exploring, especially if you’re looking to create an experience for your guests. When your friends and family have already been wow’ed by your gown, your reception décor, the venue, dinner, and your exceptional taste in dance music—adding a food truck to the mix is like pulling out the ace in your sleeve. Do you remember that feeling when you
heard the ice cream truck coming down the street? That excitement is synonymous to the feeling that your guests will experience when a food truck pulls up to your wedding (minus the creepy music). Whether you’re a bride who could eat pizza for breakfast or a bride who never passes up a Taco Tuesday, we’ve gathered some of our favorite local food trucks that cater special events. These food trucks offer options that lend themselves well to the late-night, party atmosphere! Spoiler alert: these menus are so enticing, you may just be tempted to have them cater your entire wedding!

WHY BARN WEDDINGS ARE HERE TO stay A setting sun peeking through wooden beams. Cathedral and vaulted ceilings dressed with romantic stringed lights and chandeliers. Bars made from whiskey barrels and pallets. Historic origins with modern amenities. Acres and acres of serene countryside. They called it a trend—a movement that would soon be on its way out by the time
the following year’s wedding trends were introduced. They said that countryside places and rustic spaces would fall out of step with brides who would certainly grow weary of mason jars and cowboy boots. “They” are the experts who predict what’s on the horizon for what’s in and what’s out in the wedding industry. And sometimes, they are mistaken.

BARNS ARE EASILY PERSONALIZED AND TRANSFORMED TO BECOME WHATEVER IT IS THAT THE BRIDE WANTS IT TO BE.
THE LOFT AT WALNUT HILL FARM MONTGOMERY FARMS Photo Lulu
Barn weddings arrived on scene in a subtle manner a few years ago, but their popularity continues to gain rapid momentum, and not just with brides looking for the casual, rustic experience. Nowadays, couples are revolutionizing their barn weddings to include every type of wedding theme, while incorporating their own take on tradition. Perhaps that is the enticement of the barn wedding—it can be as elegant, as casual, as rustic, as lavish, or as personalized as a couple wants it to be. That thought alone breaks every stereotype that surrounds the barn wedding. They can no longer be defined or limited within the boundaries of burlap runners, mason jars, chalkboard signs and D.I.Y. Instead, they serve more as a blank canvas where couples can envision and create.

The demand for barn weddings reflects a significant shift in the wedding industry which suggests that couples are deviating from the norm. Instead, they are embracing their own styles and daring to venture beyond tradition and cookie-cutter weddings. The diamond-inthe-rough characteristics that come with barns allows brides to easily visualize their wedding in the venue. And that blank canvas is the perfect backdrop to design a wedding that is an authentic reflection of the couple. Ballrooms, country clubs and hotels seem to carry an expectation of extravagance and luxury while barns are easily personalized and transformed to become whatever it is that the bride wants it to be.

LAKESIDE OCCASIONS
More and more couples are now expressing their desire to simply create an experience for their guests. In other words, they really want their friends and family to have fun. And while that certainly can be done within the confines of any venue, it comes naturally within the barn setting with fire pits, animals roaming throughout the grounds, outdoor spaces for yard games, and overnight accommodations. There is just something about attending a barn wedding that tells guests they are going to have a good time. The barn wedding “trend” hasn’t wavered much in the past years. Instead, the “trend” continues to refashion itself by being a flexible space where brides can virtually design their own venue with any trend or non-trend they want.

FEATURED WEDDING
ELIZABETH & ALEC ENFIELD
Elizabeth Roller and Alec Enfield met during their freshman year at DePauw University in Greencastle. Both athletes, they had started school early and met while living on the same dorm floor. They were dating by Thanksgiving and have been together almost 10 years.

THE PROPOSAL
at first blush
After seven years of dating, Alec wanted to catch Elizabeth off guard. They both work in advertising in Chicago and had planned to meet a group of friends coming into town. But when one of those not-so-unusual snowstorms forced them to change plans, they decided to spend a quiet evening at home. “That evening I was reading in bed when Alec came in and got down on one knee. It was perfect and low key and relaxed,” says Elizabeth. They walked through Lincoln Park Zoo in the snow, and afterwards went to their favorite restaurant.

THE DRESS Elizabeth estimates that she tried on more than 100 dresses in Chicago, admitting she was indecisive and found she loved too many of them. While home for the weekend, she went into The Wedding Studio in Carmel with her mom and sister, who were more than a little fed up with her inability to make a decision. She picked a gorgeous blush dress and when her dad came to see her, decided that was the one.
60
WEDDINGDAY
THE DÉCOR Romantic and light is how Elizabeth describes the vision she had in mind for her wedding reception. Canal 337 provided the industrial backdrop she wanted, but she added lace, light colors and candles and silver accents to “pop” against the venue. Mismatched chandeliers, table candelabras and back-lit cocktail table linens also added to the bride’s very particular tableau.
FUNNIEST MOMENT Despite the meticulous attention to detail, the bride and groom were so busy saying goodbye to everyone and making sure everything was settled at the venue that they missed the shuttle back to the hotel and had to take an Uber. Once back at the hotel, they realized they didn’t have a room key or any identification. Luckily, the fact that Elizabeth was wearing a wedding gown was enough to gain entrance to the bridal suite!
WHAT WE
love
This bride knew exactly what she wanted and stuck to her vision.
THE COLORS “I do not consider myself a pink person, but I was very drawn to all the blush and white wedding décor I saw on Pinterest.” While her future husband was not sure at first, she convinced him and soon he was happily buying blush pockets squares for his groomsmen at The Tie Bar.
FAVORITE MOMENT OF THE CEREMONY “The chandeliers hanging from the rafters were gorgeous as I walked down the aisle, and the ceremony was short and sweet.”
WEDDINGDAY 61
THE CAKE “I love cake,” Elizabeth says, referring to friends who aren’t as passionate about this wedding tradition. Heavenly Sweets designed a butter cake with a layer of caramel filling and another with an apricot filling. A ruffled blush bottom layer with silver details incorporated the simple outer layer to complement the decadent flavors inside.
ADVICE FROM THE bride
“I don’t know what I would have done without our wedding planner, Laura Lim. While there are so many great D.I.Y. tutorials and Pinterest wedding planning guides, a wedding planner was worth the splurge for ease of mind. The day could not have been more flawless or relaxed.”
62
WEDDINGDAY
THE FLORAL Elizabeth wanted the flowers to be primarily white with a hint of blush added. Posh Petals helped steer clear of the wrong shade of pink, finding the right blush color for the season. The bouquets were made up of white roses, nosegay and peonies with a few blush peonies. At the reception, mercury vases held hydrangeas, roses, anemones and mums, and floating peonies sat atop the cocktail tables. The bride was adamant she wanted minimum greenery throughout.

THE VISION Appropriately titled “Fine Art Wedding,” this cover shoot was designed to create a whimsical, painterly feel drawing inspiration from ballet dancers in classic interiors, the elements of early spring, and timeless details. Tara Steele with Tara Nicole Weddings and Autumn Keller of Isibeal Studio conceptualized the cover shoot and illustrated each detail to be elegant and graceful, drawing on the graceful postures and fluid motion of a ballet dancer to bring all of the details together seamlessly. “We titled it ‘The Fine Art Wedding’ because of our careful curation of each element used, from handdyed silk table runners and hand-rolled and lettered name cards, to jewel-like spring blooms, and the delicate beauty of film photography,” says Tara. With those elements serving as a creative foundation, the vendor team planned the entire shoot around light seasonal tones anchored by a touch of dark. The result was a fairytale cover shoot that accentuated fanciful and romantic details.
THE STATIONERY Custom handmade invitations were designed to reflect an heirloom feel with letterpress printing and hand-deckled edges. Tara and Autumn requested a light gray and ivory paper suite customized with the addition of the venue illustration on the details card. Old-fashioned calligraphy style by Manayunk Calligraphy, encased in slate gray envelopes and gold letterpress on light gray handmade paper offered the perfect combination.

THE VENUE Knowing they were after a light and airy feel for the overall look, Tara and Autumn went in search of a venue that offered tall windows and natural light because they wanted to capture film photographs along with digital photos. When they came across The Palladium in Carmel, Indiana, they knew they had found their venue. The Palladium features a domed European-style design with surround theater seating, impressively high ceilings, large windows and marble architecture. The wood floors, the pale French blue and green wall tones and natural light set the stage that was necessary for the concept.
THE FLORAL Isibeal Studio selected flowers that were only available seasonally and accented them with open garden roses shipped from a family grower in Oregon. Delightfully fragrant little sweet peas, checkerboard fritillaria, helleborus, hyacinth, French tulips and picotee ranunculus were nestled into antique iron vessels for the table while local magnolia and pear branches formed statement arrangements in oversized garden urns. One very special rose named “Mettalina was chosen for its complex and subtle taupe color.

THE DÉCOR The decorative sketch played heavily on the spring seasonal tones and fused in slate gray tones for an accent color. The vendor team created a layered texture palette with handdyed silk chiffon table linens, sterling and vintage glass candelabras, other speciality textured linens, layered china textures, and engraved flatware. “We wanted this shoot to feel as though it were from another century or a lovely dream,” says Tara. “Every element is important in this kind of approach from the architectural elements to the detailed tablescape to the tiny fritillaria in the bridal bouquet.”

COVER SHOOT
THE HAIR & MAKEUP The bride’s hair was loosely pinned in a soft updo to align with the fluidity and movement of her gown. A neutral smokey eye in shades of brown and a soft, light-colored lip accented the bride’s best features.
THE DRESS Tara and Autumn carefully selected the Justin Alexander gown from the Bridal Superstore. The gown’s deep tonal range, delicate detailing and fluidity harmonized effortlessly with the overall look and feel of the cover shoot.
