FROM THE EDITOR “Winter is an etching, spring is a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn is a mosaic of them all.” -Stanley Horowitz An Internet search of this lovely poem returns over 1,600,000 results, and according to the New York Public Library’s website, has been referenced in many ways, from grief counseling to public parks, politics to a Philippine newspaper. His words are obviously quite inspirational! Well, I’m not sure if I’m the first to use his poem in reference to wedding planning, but here you go! The beauty of the seasons, as Horowitz describes, is visually narrated throughout much of this issue! As they say, there’s something for everyone, in whichever season you choose for your own wedding. FEATURED WEDDING

LIVIA & RYAN COOK

Ryan and Livia Cook found their forever after meeting online. Planning an event of epic proportion proved to be a challenge as Livia was finishing law school and the couple was living in Arizona while planning a Michigan wedding. Face-to-face vendor meetings and appointments were difficult to set up so the couple sought the assistance of Cassie Celestin of White Dress Events, an event planning firm in Grand Haven, Michigan. Livia desired a “Secret Garden” theme and trusted her planner to connect with vendors to bring her vision to fruition.

enchantment meets elegance IN A SECRET GARDEN WEDDING

THE FLORAL Posh Petals truly designed the mystique and elegance for the garden theme. Enchantment was found at every turn with arrangements of cherry tree branches, hydrangeas, stock, lavender, ivy, coral charm peonies, soft pink spray roses, apricot parrot tulips, blush pink astilbe, silver brunia and Vuvuzela garden roses.

WHAT WE

THE VENUE Both Ryan and Livia liked the location and the historic feel of the CityFlats Ballroom in Grand Rapids. The historic architecture paired with modern style attracted the couple with marble flooring, brick accent walls and sky-high ceilings. 12

love

Upon arrival, guests were greeted with seating cards tucked into miniature topiaries and with the couple’s signature drink. The signature drink was called Caipirinha which is the national cocktail of Brazil, where the bride was born and raised. Another personal touch was the homemade cookie favors that were laid on the plate chargers. The bride’s grandmother used an old family recipe to make each and every cookie!

THE JON HARTMAN PHOTOGRAPHY CO.

THE DÉCOR Tables were set with coral and rosette linens and Elizabeth from Posh Petals was enlisted to turn each guest table into a garden experience. Each one was designed to be its own little garden with fluffy peonies, lavender topiaries, chunky moss pieces, branches and tiny rose buds. Each place setting became complete with a plate charger, a custom menu and homemade cookie favor topped with a vintage key. Events by I Candy provided accent pieces throughout the reception including moss-covered butterflies, miniature chairs, table numbers, menus and other special touches.

THE CAKE A weathered arbor framed the three-tiered cake from The Cakabakery. Posh Petals hung tiny vases of flowers and vines, accompanied by moss-covered butterflies. The display took on a presence of its own as it was placed on a rosette linen-covered table and adorned with a “Happily Ever After” topper. 14

HOW TO THROW THE ultimate BACHELORETTE PARTY

by Jenna Nelson

Bachelorette parties have evolved considerably in recent years—especially when it comes to stereotypes. The bachelor party used to be referred to as a “stag party,” while the bachelorette party was called a “hen party.” But gone are the traditions of commemorating one last night of singleness with copious amounts of alcohol, a venue with poles, and ridiculous games that make me blush just thinking about them. A bachelorette party is really a rite of passage, but for some who envision selling sucker bouquets, doing 1-2-3 tequila shots and wearing flashing LED light tiaras, it can become a night to endure rather than to enjoy. Many brides have opted out of having a bachelorette party altogether in order to avoid the “guess who bought the lingerie” game or the drink-til-we-drop tradition. But as more and more brides deviate from wedding traditions and instead embrace personalization throughout their wedding, we

18

WEDDINGDAY

see the same shift with bachelorette parties. More and more brides are looking for ways to bond with their best girls by planning engaging and memorable activities. And while alcohol can certainly be involved, it doesn't have to be the main event. There are plenty of opportunities to indulge in a few refreshing takes on bachelorette parties. Our collection of ideas are guaranteed to make it a night to remember and for your whole group to own that whole #squadgoals thing. Maids of honor, take note! First things first, a great night out requires great hair. That's non-negotiable—trust me, your Instagram feed will appreciate it. Getting a blowout for the night out is our favorite way to get glammed up for girls' night. Most salons have blowout services, but there are even blowdry bars that specialize in pampering ladies for a night out. Plan to spend about $30 to $50 on a blowout. You can also get your makeup done here. We recommend requesting contoured makeup (because who can possibly figure that out on their own?!) and adding some fake eyelashes for a nighttime look.

SIGN UP FOR A FOOD TOUR

Kristen Mittlestedt Photography

Next, an itinerary is essential to the bachelorette party. Now if your group and the bride are up for crazy scavenger hunts, taking shots and dancing, go for it! But if you're looking to plan something a little out of the ordinary, consider one of these ideas:

You can sign up for a food tour or even create your own! The concept is that you visit a few dining establishments in one night tasting different things on the menu. It works best if you choose restaurants that are in close proximity to one another. Don't forget to eat light at each place—it's a marathon, not a sprint.

You know how to drink 'em, but do you know the actual craftsmanship that goes into mixing a cocktail? Sign up for a class in your area and learn how to make your own signature drink. You can even make a competition out of it by creating a contest to see who makes the best cocktail—this is education at its finest.

Gem Photography

ATTEND A MIXOLOGY CLASS

TAKE A DANCE LESSON

Obviously, this classic bachelorette event had to make our list. Taking a seductive dance lesson is designed to be more empowering and entertaining than it is risqué and sexy. You can find classes that offer private group lessons in pole dancing, salsa, hip hop or burlesque.

GO ON A PEDAL PUB

Hopefully you have experienced the wonder that is the pedal pub by now. Pedal pubs are crowd-size bicycles that are built to move about cities while the cyclists drink and bar hop. It's the perfect way to burn off those beer calories.

BUY TICKETS TO A COMEDY SHOW

If the bride doesn't necessarily enjoy being the center of attention, attend a comedy show where all eyes are on the stage. It's a great way to entertain the girls without the responsibility of being the entertainer!

THROW A SPA PARTY

SIGN UP FOR A PAINT AND DRINK EVENT

Paintbrush in one hand and cocktail in the other—it's the ideal recipe for a laid-back girls' night that incorporates both activity and social drinking. Most painting party facilities accommodate for private parties so you and the ladies can have a room and instructor to yourselves! Plus, you get to choose the canvas you'd like to paint so everyone walks away with a memorable keepsake of your night.

Amanda Fales Photography

Most bachelorette parties are about a girls' night out, but don't overlook throwing a girls' night in. Stock up on wine and appetizers and hire spa professionals to come to your door. These spa professionals come equipped with pampering products, bath robes, music and all the other spa essentials. Several services are available from pedicures to makeovers to massages to facials. You can also save a little money by throwing a D.I.Y. spa party.

Jodi Bodtke of Giving Tree Photography was stirred by visions of an earthy, nautical wedding. The colors, flowers, décor and overall theme of this style shoot were inspired by a small town near the marina and by the beach glass that is commonly found buried in the Lake Michigan shoreline. She collaborated with Marco Alexzondra of Marco Alexzondra Floral and Event Services, and together with the addition of several other vendors, they designed a stylized wedding that made use of pale blue, green and brown tones, succulents, driftwood, beach glass and heart-shaped rocks. The marina at Harbor Grand in New Buffalo, Michigan provided a gorgeous backdrop with sailboats, a willow tree and Michigan blue waters.

THE EASIEST GUIDE TO changing your last name

AFTER THE WEDDING

Y

our newlywed bliss can quickly come to an end when it comes time to endure the dreaded task of changing your last name. The legal process can often take the romance out of taking your significant other’s last name. If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.

1. GET THE ORIGINAL

3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE

5. UPDATE YOUR BANK

Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.

The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.

2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL

4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME

6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME

If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.

When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.

MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

Rustic & Romantic 10 VINEYARDS FOR YOUR WEDDING

Rustic wedding spaces continue to be in high demand and while barns have lingered in the spotlight, more and more brides are looking for that perfect rural space for their outdoor wedding. Most barns offer acres of picturesque scenery for outdoor events, but there is also something exceptionally romantic about saying “I do surrounded by sprawling vineyards. After all, a bottle of wine is the official emblem of romance, isn't it?

Vineyard weddings are the solution for those who are after that rustic vibe, but are looking for something a little different beyond barns.

VENUES WE LOVE

Couples may have their hearts set on an outdoor affair with perhaps a rural feel, but shy away from hosting at a barn venue. Vineyard weddings are the solution for those who are after that rustic vibe, but are looking for something a little different beyond barns. And like we have seen with barn weddings, vineyards can be transformed into whatever style the couple is after—from laid back and casual to Napa Valleylike and luxurious. Have we talked about the wine yet? Wine is a classic fundamental in almost every wedding, but drinking it at the vineyard where its grapes were grown creates an experience in a glass. Couples can create the ultimate experience by incorporating a wine tasting for guests during social hour and serving light bites for food and wine pairings. Many venues allow guests to stroll through the vineyards and even offer vineyard tours as part of the wedding package.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind Consider the season of your wedding. Depending on the region, early summer may be the season for greenery and grapes while autumn produces those beautiful fall colors on the vines. Also, be aware of planning your wedding during harvest season. Many wineries or vineyard venues carry a license to serve wine and beer only—not liquor.

46

WEDDINGDAY

Hosting an outdoor wedding comes with responsibilities. You should plan on extra expenses like microphones, linens, chair and table rentals, sound equipment, etc. Many of these places are open to the public. Find out from the venue if the entire facility and grounds can be rented privately. Otherwise your intimate vineyard wedding will be a little less intimate!

Don't forget to let guests know how to dress for this kind of wedding. In other words, they are not high heel-friendly. It will greatly benefit you to find vendors that have either worked with the vineyard before or have experience with vineyard weddings.

Provide transportation if the ceremony is offsite or if the hotel is not nearby. These venues are often far out into the country, making it difficult for guests to find. If you're hosting at a vineyard (not a winery), find out what the restroom accommodations are. You may need to rent portable bathrooms.

Indiana ELK RIDGE VINEYARDS AND LAVENDER FARM There are plenty of options for hosting your wedding at Elk Ridge. The venue has indoor options like a banquet hall that can hold up to 120 guests or a covered deck that can hold 50. Outdoor spaces include pavilions, gardens, gazebos and more, situated near a pond, lavender field and six acres of rolling vineyards. 8785 Ridge Road, Shoals, IN 47581 (812) 709-0827 • elkridgeranch.net OLIVER WINERY AND VINEYARDS Special events at Oliver Winery and Vineyards include tastings and tours for guests! FEATURED WEDDING

KARLEE & KERRY RENZ

Karlee and Kerry Renz first met back in February of 2008, during Karlee’s sophomore year at Saint Mary’s College and Kerry’s senior year at Notre Dame, when their paths crossed at an off-campus get-together at the house of a mutual friend. By the end of the night they had exchanged phone numbers, and the rest is history. Following graduation they both moved to Morristown, New Jersey where Kerry is from, but it was a trip back to South Bend in the fall of 2013 that set their journey toward “I do” in motion…

July 18, 2015 SOUTH BEND, INDIANA PHOTOGRAPHED BY JOSEPHINEY PHOTOGRAPHY Story by Carly Squadroni 54

WEDDINGDAY

THE PROPOSAL It was the weekend of the Notre Dame vs. Michigan State game and Karlee’s parents, who live on Diamond Lake in Cassopolis, Michigan, had invited Kerry and his parents to join their family for a Friday afternoon barbecue at their home. As evening approached, Karlee saw that Kerry had wandered down toward the water’s edge and she went to join him, completely unsuspecting that he was about to pop the question. Both of their families were able to watch the proposal from the deck just a few dozen yards away—far enough to be out of earshot, but close enough to snap some priceless photos for them.

WEDDINGDAY 55

THE PLANNING Since Karlee and Kerry lived in New Jersey, they had to do most of the planning for their South Bend wedding remotely. Luckily, having a wedding coordinator from Merry Me Events as well as a mom and twin sister who lived in town put Karlee’s mind at ease. “I knew I was in good hands with Merry Me helping to coordinate everything,” she says. A little modern technology came in handy too: Karlee joined her mom and sister via FaceTime for the initial vendor meetings, and she was able to use her Pinterest boards to share her vision and ideas with her wedding coordinator as well.

JOSEPHINEY PHOTOGRAPHY

THE FLORAL Merry Me also designed and created all of the floral arrangements, using white roses and hydrangea to create a classic allwhite bridal bouquet for Karlee. The bridesmaids’ bouquets added a cheerful pop of color with green hydrangea, blue thistle, yellow craspedia, blue bachelor buttons, green trick, succulents, and orange pincushion protea. They used predominantly white blooms for the reception centerpieces, creating a mix of high and low arrangements featuring hydrangea, Ecuadorian roses, oriental lilies, dendrobium orchids and mini calla lilies accented with hanging crystals and lots of candles.

56

WEDDINGDAY

THE DRESS

THE VENUE

Karlee chose a strapless, fit-and-flare Justin Alexander gown with lots of lace and just a touch of sparkly beaded and sequined detail. She found the dress at I Do, I Do boutique in Morristown after visiting a few other salons. “I am not much of a shopper and though wedding dress shopping was definitely exciting, I was happy to have found the dress quickly!” she says. She fell in love with the silhouette, the low cut back, and especially the long train that would trail behind her as she walked down the aisle.

Not long after the proposal, Karlee was home visiting again and went to check out a few reception venues with her mom. She knew she wanted a casual, fun, and unique space to balance out the formality of a traditional church ceremony. Their second stop was The Brick in South Bend, and Karlee knew right then that they could call off the search. “We loved everything about it, from the concrete floors to the exposed brick and ductwork. It was the perfect blank canvas that we could make our own,” Karlee says.

WEDDINGDAY 57

NO PLACE LIKE HOME // Featured Wedding

THE COLORS & DÉCOR Blue is Karlee’s favorite color, so she chose a short one-shoulder cerulean blue dress for her bridesmaids, while Kerry knew that he wanted his groomsmen in gray suits rather than formal tuxedos. They incorporated the blue and gray color scheme into the table linens while keeping almost everything else very clean and unfussy. “I found myself pinning elegant yet simple all-white floral arrangements accented with candles and crystals,” says Karlee. They amped up the drama with sparkly crystal accents and sequined linens on the cake table and king’s table. The focal point of the room was a dazzling crystal-draped chandelier, a romantic complement to The Brick’s industrial-chic atmosphere.

JOSEPHINEY PHOTOGRAPHY

WHAT WE

love

Though Karlee and Kerry now call New Jersey home, South Bend is clearly a special place for the couple. Kerry’s dad and two brothers are fellow Notre Dame alums and Karlee has been a lifelong ND fan herself, so the Guglielmino Athletics Complex on campus was a perfect spot for their rehearsal dinner—and they got plenty of bridal party photos on both the Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s campuses the next day. Their wedding hashtag, #Smarried71815, is a reference to the nickname Karlee and her college friends liked to use for their beloved alma mater, “Smary’s.” The wedding favors were a mix of South Bend Chocolate Co. chocolates and New Jersey salt water taffy, complete with a sticker they designed themselves reading “The Sweet of South Bend + The Salt of New Jersey.”

THE VISION All it took was a quick glance at a watercolor wedding invitation and we fell head over heels proving that love at first sight is quite possible. What was once simply a method of painting has transformed into an artistic direction for weddings and it's not just limited to the stationery, either. The watercolor trend has seeped into wedding cakes, flowers, table dĂŠcor and even linens. Once our editorial team started exploring the possibilities of watercolor, it turned into one of those can't-stop, won't-stop ordeals.

Our minds were made up: the whimsical, watercolor inspiration deserved a place in our hearts and on our cover. We enlisted the creative direction of planner and designer Jenah Pfeiffer of In My Red High Heels, a creative design company in northern Indiana. A collaborative effort was established between a team of wedding vendors who rose to the challenge of designing watercolor elements that would be complementary, yet not competitive with one another. The end result was a bursting kaleidoscope of pastels in every direction.

WEDDINGDAY 67

COVER SHOOT

GRACE PULVER PHOTOGRAPHY

THE FLORAL The flower details, designed by Marco Alexzondra, were an essential element as they had to accent the watercolor tones while being careful to not overtake them. The floral rings, bouquet, centerpieces, and the bride's headpiece were carefully created using pink, white and lavender larkspur, snapdragons, a variety of special roses, poppy pods, lisianthus, peonies, air plants, and many, many more.

THE DRESS The model wore a Watters Starla gown from Here Comes the Dress that showed off the runway's hottest dress trend at the moment: rose gold. It featured lovely blush tones that blended effortlessly with the soft color theme and showed off a full skirt adorned with floating rosettes adding drama and texture to the gown.

WHIMSICAL WATERCOLOR // Cover Shoot

THE DÉCOR Pretty details were evident every which way you turned throughout this cover shoot. Each of these details, large and small, were important to the overall look. The tablescape was created with the intent to bring the color palette full circle and to add dimension and texture. This was done with baby blue plates paired with gold chargers, gold silverware, the table cards, a tulle table overlay, and duo-toned wine and water glasses. The napkins were also hand-dyed using watercolor paints. A watercolor backdrop embellished with floral rings was added behind the cake table offering an artistic element. The other showstopper was the dainty bar cart that held charming cocktails with rock candy stir sticks, fruit slices and flower petal ice cubes.

WEDDINGDAY 69

THE HAIR & MAKEUP The bride's hair was actually done by her sister. The model and her sister own Under the Veil, a traveling salon offering onsite hairstyle services. To match the fairytale look of the shoot, the bride's hair was styled in a messy, side-swept fishtail braid. Meanwhile, the makeup by Bethza Professional Makeup made use of nude tones and a bold lip color.

GRACE PULVER PHOTOGRAPHY

THE CAKE & DESSERTS

THE VENUE

The impressive dessert displays stole the spotlight in this cover shoot. Designer Desserts created a five-tiered, watercolored cake with cupcakes that demonstrated authentic artistry while Wildflour Bakery fashioned a monumental macaron tower along with other bite-size desserts.

To welcome the whimsical feel, a natural open setting was necessary. That environment was found in Taltree Arboretum and Gardens, a natural preserve in Valparaiso, Indiana. Taltree boasts gorgeous grounds of formal gardens, prairies and woods. This shoot made use of the Joseph E. Meyer Memorial Pavilion, surrounded by gardens and a sprawling lawn featuring vibrant and native plants all around.

WEDDINGDAY

THE STATIONERY Watercolor prints were the inspirational foundation for this cover shoot, so the expectations were high for how the print elements would turn out. As fate would have it, we located a local artist who specializes in watercolor art. Shalmai Keim, owner of Love Shalmai in Goshen designed the invitation suite, menu cards, escort cards and table numbers using an array of light pastels and gold foiling.
