FROM THE EDITOR As I was reviewing all of the beautiful wedding photo submissions from our recent “Best of Wedding Photography” Facebook contest, it affirmed to me the dramatic changes that have taken place in wedding photography over the years. It is clearly now considered a dramatic art form vs. the posed shots of wedding parties of the past. I was amazed by the beauty of each work, and am thankful that the decision was not ours this time in choosing the winner! As we prepare this issue of WeddingDay, we are also preparing for another season of new brides embarking on their own wedding planning! As with the many brides of the past who have relied on WeddingDay in print, online and social, we hope you too will visit us frequently for inspiration, advice, and access to the very best vendors. Best wishes,

FEATURED WEDDING

WHITNEY & SEAN MOONEY

When Sean and Whitney met on match.com®, they knew it was a—excuse the pun—match made in heaven. Whitney says the connection was instant and the two became inseparable. Sean went on to propose while the couple was visiting his parents' cabin. He began his proposal by handing Whitney a glass of wine, so he obviously already knew how to prepare to ask a woman an important question!

A GLAMOROUS NEW YEAR'S EVE WEDDING // Featured Wedding

KATE MORROW PHOTOGRAPHY

THE PLANNING Whitney is an event manager in Grand Rapids so she had a clear vision of what she couldn't live without and what she could do without right away. She shied away from a summer wedding because of the heat and was considering fall when she nonchalantly mentioned the possibility of a New Year's Eve wedding. “I thought he [Sean] would HATE the idea, but he loved it!” says Whitney. “We are always scrambling to make NYE plans and they never live up to our expectations, so we thought 'why not throw a huge party?!'” And that was the beginning of #midnightwiththemooneys. 12

WEDDINGDAY

Sean and Whitney consulted with Whitney's friend Kelly who also happens to be a planner at All Buttoned Up Events, a full-service planning company in west Michigan. Whitney credits Kelly for making her vision a reality, while keeping her grounded throughout the planning process. Since Whitney is in the event planning business, she had already networked with plenty of vendors making her selections a rather simple decision.

THE DRESS

THE VENUE

Whitney wore a Casablanca Bridal gown from Renee Austin's bridal shop in Grand Rapids. The gown featured champagne-colored satin and a white organza overlay. The fitted bodice and pleated organza offered the romantic look that Whitney was looking for. She especially loved the crystal and pearls that adorned the bodice. The finishing touch was a veil by designer Erica Koesler.

The next venture for the couple was to locate a venue that matched Whitney's over-the-top, glitzy vision. It was, after all, a New Year's Eve celebration! They set up a tour at The Ballroom at McKay, a brandnew venue in downtown Grand Rapids. Whitney says as soon as the elevator doors opened, she knew her wedding would take place there. A mirror wall, marble pillars, amazing lighting—the venue simply wowed both her and Sean.

THE DÉCOR The New Year's Eve holiday set the tone for the reception décor thanks to Grand Rapids vendors like Fancy Fray, Events by I Candy and RSVP Events. Whitney chose champagne sequins, ivory, gold, dark burgundy and a mix of lighter burgundy shades for her color palette. To add dimension, the reception had both long and round tables for guests, and each tablescape featured its own unique centerpiece using both mercury glass and gold containers. The rectangular tables held tall candles of varying heights. The table numbers included the couple's New Year's resolutions.

WEDDINGDAY 13

KATE MORROW PHOTOGRAPHY

WHAT WE

love

Having weddings on a holiday can either be the best idea or the worst idea. It all depends on how the couple chooses to acknowledge it. In this case, Sean and Whitney went all out and threw a party for their guests making sure the night was just as memorable for them as it was for the couple. Champagne, sparkle, midnight kisses and resolutions were embraced wholeheartedly at the Mooney wedding. And as Whitney summarizes it, “what happens at the Mooney wedding, stays at the Mooney wedding.”

SPECIAL TOUCHES As a nod to the holiday, the couple created a resolution board so guests could write resolutions for them. They took two gold frames and stapled strings of sequins along them with spray painted mini gold clothespins, and made little cards where guests could write down resolutions and pin them up on the board. Sean and Whitney also included the typical New Year’s Eve must-haves like noisemakers and “Happy New Year’s” hats to help guests get in on the dual celebration. 14

AND PREDICT WHAT'S TO COME IN 2017

WHAT TREND DID YOU LOVE MOST IN 2016? The Jon Har tm

“One of the 2016 trends that I really love is metallic color palettes and mixing metals. It used to be that you chose one metal accent...gold or silver. Now there are more options.... rose gold, copper, bronze....and you don't have to choose just one, you can mix and match with a stunning effect.”

“We have seen all those great black chalkboard signs with white lettering that brides DIY or have custom made. These signs are here to stay however, my prediction for 2017 is that we will see more brides think outside the box by creating custom signage made on backgrounds of varying colors and materials such as wood and plexiglass. These new choices will compliment the modern and urban vibe that brides are striving to create.”

“I am loving the personal touches couples are getting excited about. Gone is the “common” look, schedule or structure of every wedding. Couples are finding ways to incorporate their personality on every front of their wedding—starting as early as their social media engagement announcements. We saw such a movement in popular trends that we saw repeated over and over in 2014 and 2015. Couples are now taking those basic ideas and running with them. It's so refreshing!”

WHAT TREND DO YOU PREDICT FOR 2017? “I think we are going to see less color palettes and more overall 'looks' and 'feels.' I don't think brides are going to rely on a certain color combination but will find more inspiration in looks, ambiance and concepts. I'm excited to see “blush and gold” become more “romantic and organic.” It started with moving away from matching bridesmaids dresses. I'm confident it's going to overflow into all design aspects of wedding planning.”

Where in the world should you get married? Just because you want a destination wedding, doesn't mean you're destined for the tropics or the Mexican border. From the sun-kissed shores of Lake Michigan to the coasts of the Carolinas and from mountains to rainforests, your destination wedding possibilities and places are as infinite as oceans. There's a reason why fairytales start with "in a land far, far away" and end with "happily ever after."

If you get yourself organized with the proper documents, the process can be less strenuous, allowing you to continue to revel in your newlywed happiness.

1. GET THE ORIGINAL

3. APPLY FOR A NEW LICENSE

5. UPDATE YOUR BANK

Getting a new license from the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office requires a few documents, namely your old license, the original marriage license and your new Social Security card. Remember to change your address if you have moved after the wedding.

The easiest way to do this is to visit your local branch in person. Take your new license, your marriage license and your new Social Security card, and ask for your name to be changed on your account. Request new checks, debit cards and credit cards with your new name.

2. REQUEST A NEW SOCIAL

4. CHANGE YOUR LAST NAME

6. UPDATE YOUR LAST NAME

If you visit the Social Security Administration’s website, you can find an application for a change of name here. This is a free service. Print the application, fill it out, and include any required documents. You can either take your application to a nearby Social Security office or mail it in. You should receive your new card with your new last name in approximately 10 days.

When your new Social Security card comes in the mail, meet with your HR manager at work to switch your name over. This includes payroll, 401k, your insurance benefits, stocks etc.

MARRIAGE LICENSE FROM THE CLERK’S OFFICE The original license should come from the clerk’s office where your license was filed. One should automatically be sent to you a couple weeks after the wedding. The original document should have a raised seal and your new last name. Also, it’s a good idea to request copies.

WHEN BETHANY TIBBLE, OWNER OF BETH JOY PHOTOGRAPHY AND RICHELLE STEWART, OWNER OF POTS FLORAL PUT THEIR HEADS TOGETHER TO DESIGN A STYLE SHOOT, THEY HAD HOPED TO DELIVER A LITTLE BOHEMIAN INSPIRATION TO BRIDES PLANNING A LOCAL MIDWEST WEDDING. WHAT THEY ENDED UP WITH WAS GORGEOUS COLLISION OF RUSTIC AND LUXURY WITH HANDCRAFTED DETAILS BY LOCAL ARTISANS. Bethany says they envisioned an intimate wedding or even an elopement in the quiet countryside where a couple could celebrate with a relaxed-yet-chic affair. “This look is perfect for a bride who wants a backyard bash, both wild and rustic, but also contrasted with some luxe details,” says Bethany. 44

WEDDINGDAY

THE LOCATION As the details of the shoot fell into place, Bethany thought of the most fitting location: her parents' land filled with meadows, sprawling fields, a huge oak tree; it had all of the essentials of a Midwest countryside.

THE COLOR PALETTE Given the natural but lush surroundings, the team chose a neutral palette with accents of merlot, gold, blush and greenery. Since the scene was set in late autumn/early winter, the deep reds from the floral, fruits, paper goods and bride's shawl pulled the details together.

BETH JOY PHOTOGRAPHY

WEDDINGDAY 45

THE SWEETS & TREATS Bethany and Richelle (women who clearly have many talents!) designed, baked and created the fruit-covered naked cake themselves. Mini cupcakes from Jefferson Market and frosted cranberries were added to dress up the vintage dessert table.

THE FLORAL Richelle of Pots Floral in Detroit was the other “dreamer” in this style shoot and her flower details are what took this entire concept to another level. The bouquet was arranged with peonies, cabbage roses, anemone, snapdragon, carnations, eucalyptus, amaranthus, proteas and an artichoke! The tablescape went from vision to execution with greenery, pears, pomegranates and frosted cranberries. Bethany and Richelle loved the idea of using edible fruit as part of the décor concept. Even the bride wore a string of cranberries in her floral crown which was intended to provide a pop of color and a subtle welcome to winter.

THE DÉCOR The decorative touches were simplistic in nature, yet added such vibrancy and beauty throughout the shoot, thanks to rentals from Meadow & Moss and A Touch of Whimsy Events. The scene was set to depict a picnic-style spread complete with a D.I.Y. pallet table set for dinner. The boho vibe was strong with a teepee covered in ethereal drapery and vintage rugs for cozy cuddling, in addition to the tree swing which added an element of fun.

46

WEDDINGDAY

THE PAPER GOODS Paper and Honey created the stationery to reflect the bohemian energy. Owner Laura created a rough-edge invitation suite designed to match the hand-designed paper, designed by Brittany of Two if By Sea Studios. Laura's chic calligraphy graced the paper goods with a romantic touch.

BETH JOY PHOTOGRAPHY

THE DRESS(ES) The bride and groom used in the shoot are actually married and when the vendors saw the bride's J. Crew gown, they decided to use it as the main dress in the shoot. But since life is really just too short to only wear one wedding dress, they selected a second option! The vintage gown was borrowed from The Brides Project, an organization and bridal boutique that donates 100 percent of their proceeds to the Cancer Support Center in Ann Arbor.

THE VENDORS SAY “We put our own unique spin on the 'bohemian style' and hope that this shoot will provide brides with a chance to see intimate weddings in a new perspective, especially for those living in places where beaches and deserts are replaced with meadows and forests!

FEATURED WEDDING

MORGAN & ZACK MARTIN

The love story of Zack and Morgan begins with a classic tale of little sister meets big brother's teammate on the football team. Zack was a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame and played football with Morgan's older brother Tyler. Tyler would often bring Zack to the family lake home on weekends where Zack and Morgan (a high school senior) became good friends. However, it wasn't until she graduated when the two decided she could be more than “Tyler's little sister.”

THE PROPOSAL The lake became a tradition for Zack and Morgan and it was only fitting that Zack propose there. He asked Morgan to take a boat ride with him and then got down on one knee with a ring in hand. Since it was nighttime, the lake was quiet with only the stars to witness the occasion. When Zack took Morgan back to the shoreline, their friends and family were waiting to celebrate with champagne!

THE DRESS Morgan wore a Pronovias Marimar gown that she bought from Lace Bridal Couture in Ohio. She ruled out a Cinderella-like ball gown right away because she's 5'10 and felt that it was “too much poof for a 5'10 girl!” She knew she wanted a criss-cross open back and a gown that was form fitting. Morgan found the dress of her dreams after trying about 20 others of varying styles. It was actually the dress that her mom had picked out—mothers really do know best!

56

THE PLANNING

THE FLORAL

The pair booked their ceremony and reception locations right away before asking their wedding party to be a part of the big day. Morgan had thought she wanted a rustic wedding, but ended up with a glamorous and classic vintage wedding! “It's amazing how one year can change your whole vision!” says Morgan.

The floral scheme is what really tied the room to Morgan's vision. Be Married Events designed a downright lovely blend of tall and short centerpieces using flowers like peonies, pink O'Hara garden roses, gem spray roses, pink Veronicas, Queen Anne's Lace, Blushing Bride proteas, lisanthus, hydrangeas, seeded eucalyptus and Jacksonvine.

WEDDINGDAY

WHAT WE

love

Zack and Morgan went extra lengths to include their grandparents in their wedding. Morgan had her bouquet created with her great grandmother's rosary and her grandfather’s cufflinks. For the ring pillow, Zack's grandfather’s shirt and lace appliques from both of his grandmothers' wedding gowns were sewn together to make up the pillow's exterior.

THE VENUE Zack and Morgan selected the Fort Wayne Country Club for their reception. The classic feel and character of the entire facility is exactly what they had in mind and Morgan says she did not want to have to dress up the venue too much. However, it was the veranda that overlooks the entire golf course that really sealed the deal for the couple.

WEDDINGDAY 57

A COUNTRY CLUB CELEBRATION // Featured Wedding

THE DÉCOR Morgan's colors of choice were blush and pale pink. She envisioned having a light color to complement the other summer elements of having a July wedding. The tables were decorated with mix-andmatch votives, blush napkins, gold flatware, gold-rimmed glassware, candelabras, and both tall and compote dish floral centerpieces. The gold chairs were the final finishing touch. The couple hired Sweet Paperie, a design and coordination boutique in Fort Wayne to help with the day-of logistics of their fairytale wedding.

SPECIAL TOUCHES Since the wedding took place over the Fourth of July weekend, the couple wanted to honor their family members who have served in the military, including Morgan's cousin who recently deployed. Morgan collected photos of family members who have served. She then asked Hedgehog Press who designed her invitations to create tribute boards for their families. The tribute boards included photos of the military members in uniform, their name, honors, and when and where they served. The night concluded with fireworks over the golf course to celebrate the holiday.

THE VISION As more and more brides are trading in pastel and bold color palettes for neutral shades, we decided to take a step in the opposite direction and pursue a cover shoot that bordered on moody and melodramatic. Think the Guilded Age with Mark Twain, sprinkled with inspiration and mystery from Edgar Allen Poe. Lauren from Lauren Elisabeth Events, an event planning company in southwest Michigan, broadened the initial vision and introduced pops of modern glam into the cover shoot.

THE VENUE To set the scene for the moody atmosphere, we sought an industrial venue with ample natural light to offset the darker décor. Journeyman Distillery is a former featherbone factory that used to make buggy whips and corsets. It is now a distillery, restaurant and event space with wooden floors, enormous windows and stringed lights overhead. The history and sacred feel of the venue paired perfectly with the tone of our shoot. The openness of the room translated into a blank slate for the vendor team to transform. “You can make it modern, chic, vintage or whatever style is you,” says Lauren. “You're not having to fight the deep red carpet or colorful wallpaper that you may find at other venues.”

ALLEN & COMPANY PHOTOGRAPHY

WEDDINGDAY 67

THE LOOK

COVER SHOOT

Our model wore an alluring and romantic gown from Paris House of Bridal. The dress featured a low, swoop back with etched detailing and a front slit. Stylists from Nicholas J Salon gave the model a tousled windswept look with soft curls and intentionally placed her hair to the side so it did not compete with the back of the gown. Accessories from Albert's Jewelers were the finishing touches to complete the glamorous look.

ALLEN & COMPANY PHOTOGRAPHY

68

WEDDINGDAY

THE DÉCOR Lauren chose to go with a moody-meetsmodern vibe for the décor in the shoot. Deep colors such as black, purple and indigo represented the moody look while pinks, creams and greenery portrayed the glam and modern side of the concept. The decorative concept was brought to life through rentals from Modern Day Floral, Gigi & LaClede and Special Occasions—all Michigan-based vendors. Geometric shapes were also introduced throughout to represent a current trend. Geometric lines were incorporated in the stationery, vases, glasses and plates and geometric terrariums held candles to give off a sense of romance. The tablescape was stunning with gold beaded chargers with matte black dinner plates and geometric salad plates. Taper candleholders, geometric vases, votives and terrariums were added to the table. The final touch were the bride and groom signs for the chairs from Z Create Design.

THE FLORAL Modern Day Floral captured the dramatic look using deep colors for flowers. Roses and dahlias accented the pops of glam while large proteas gave the décor a modern feel.
