FROM THE EDITOR I can’t believe it’s been ten years since the very first issue of WeddingDay was produced! As I look over the collage of covers (pages 60-61 in this issue), I think back to all of the people associated with producing the magazine over the years as well as the beautiful women who have graced our covers. It always amazed me how their inner beauty matched their physical beauty, and it truly was a joy to know and work with each one of them! I am so appreciative of my staff, past and present, who have been so diligent with every assignment and every issue produced. There are a few that own a special place with WeddingDay -- Todd Sirbek, who I owe much credit for his great logo and overall design direction of the early issues of WeddingDay; my dear friend Reine Fisher, who ten years ago I coerced out of her “stay-at-home” role to introduce a WeddingDay prototype to wedding vendors in the market, and her beautiful daughter, Tara Anglemeyer (now wife to Todd), who after school would deliver copies of WeddingDay magazines to the various distribution outlets. It is my honor that she and Todd grace the cover of this very special issue! And I can’t forget to thank my good friend Eric Woolridge, our always on-trend stylist consultant who made our cover shoots a memorable and creative experience for all! There are really so many others to thank who have played a role in producing each issue of WeddingDay over the years, and really too many to mention here, but I want to send a special “thank you” to them all. I feel as though we’re one big WeddingDay family that will continue to grow as each new issue is produced.

I can’t thank enough the many wedding vendors throughout the years who have supported WeddingDay through advertising their businesses and allowing us to produce this great resource for local brides and keep it free of charge. A few of those that hold a special place were involved in our anniversary shoot – the Palais Royale, Crystal Springs Florist, Burn’s Rent-Alls, Meg Rogers, Nicholas J Salon & Spa, Blushing Bride on 17, Sorg Jewelers, and Louie’s Tux Shop. It is my hope that these businesses and all the others who have contributed feel great satisfaction in knowing that their support is much appreciated by me as well as the many brides who have utilized WeddingDay for planning their wedding. So happy anniversary WeddingDay, and here’s to many more years, issues and weddings to come!

ASK YOUR WEDDING VENUE
THESE 10 QUESTIONS TO STAY WITHIN BUDGET Selecting and securing your wedding reception venue dictates so much about your wedding: the location, the style, the photos, the attire, and of course, the budget. If you’re like most brides-to-be, you have formed some vision of the setting of your reception. Maybe it was realistic, maybe it wasn’t. Maybe you pulled every string possible to make it realistic. Whether you had the money or you scrounged to secure your dream venue, working it into your budget and sacrificing other details, it all pays off when you can write the check for the down payment. You breathe a sigh of relief—one of the big items on the checklist can be crossed off. In your rush, you hastily scrawled your signature on the contract agreement. In your excitement, you neglected to read the added costs associated with the wedding venue. If this wasn’t explained to you up front, it’s hard to not feel taken advantage of, particularly when the venue itself was a splurge. Be warned, sometimes the “venue price” is only renting the facility out. It’s absolutely essential for planning purposes and peace of mind to research your venue(s), thoroughly read the contract, and to ask your vendor for clarification if there is any confusion.

1.
Are the linens and tableware included with the room rental? This includes napkins, tablecloths, flatware, stemware, plates, etc. Some venues such as outdoor barns may require you to rent tables, chairs, linens and all of the accessories from a rental company. This can almost double your cost.
2.
If your ceremony is being held at the same venue, what is the cost for renting microphones, sound equipment and chairs?
3.
For your dance reception, will you have to rent the dance floor from the venue?
4.
Will the venue charge a split entree fee for featuring more than one entree on the menu? It does require more coordination and effort on the catering staff to deliver more than one option for dinner.
5.
Will you be charged for using the venue’s Wifi?
6.
Is parking included? In major metropolitan areas, having your wedding downtown might mean that you or your guests will have to pay for parking.

10.
Is gratuity already included in the service fee for the food and beverage staff? The verbiage on this can be hazy. Your contract may charge a percentage for a service fee for staff and then say that staff gratuity is not included. Ask what this means and if it’s expected to give a tip.
Does the venue require you hire a wedding planner? Sometimes the service staff do not have the time and capability to coordinate all of your needs during the reception. Some venues will require you to hire an in-house or offsite planner to handle the reception details.
Is there a cake cutting fee? Most reception locations include a charge for cake cutting if the cake is made by an offsite baker. Cutting the cake takes time and it’s not an easy feat. Also, keep in mind you are using their dessert plates and counting on the venue to wash the dishes after the reception.
This is a big one; does your venue require you to purchase their liability insurance? Sometimes couples can rely on their own insurance and sometimes venues require you to purchase theirs.

Inspiration Gallery In 10 years of production, WeddingDay Magazine has seen it all—from trends that never went away to trends that we wish would have stayed. But through it all, we continue to be inspired by the little details brides fuse into their wedding as a personal expression of who they are. Our favorite weddings are the ones with couples who go beyond the limits of tradition and mix and match pieces from different themes—whether it’s bringing a touch of elegance into a rustic wedding or merging elements of modernity with elements of classic. There really are no limits or boundaries.

EMILY TALSMA, WEDDINGDAY MAGAZINE: SUMMER 2014
“We had our wedding ceremony in the hotel attached to the convention center where our reception was held. We really didn’t plan the layout well so in the background of all of the pictures of the bridesmaids during ceremony, you can see metal double doors. We knew that we were going to stand on that side of the room, but we didn’t think to hide those doors with anything. If I had a do-over, I would have spent more time considering the small details that make a big difference in making a conference room feel like a room fit for a wedding ceremony.”

“I wouldn’t have changed anything! I loved everything about our day. We kept the few traditions we liked and found meaning in, and ditched the rest. It was beautifully, uniquely us. Our ceremony was short and sweet and our reception was spent eating on the floor with all our closest friends + dancing our hearts out. I could of asked for nothing better! I think the best advice I could give would be to not allow what’s “normal” and has always been done to define your day (and define the wedding planning process). It’s your love story. Celebrate it however you’d like!”

“Ask the caterer to provide a togo bag for the bride and groom. Nine times out of 10, the couple is busy greeting guests and they never get to enjoy the fabulous meal. BRIAN & SWAPNA EISINGER
Swapna Musunuru and Brian Eisinger’s wedding was a lavish twoday affair combining the bold colors and traditions of an Indian wedding with the history and charm of downtown South Bend.

Swapna, a surgeon, and Brian, a neuroscientist, had met on a blind date while working at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She was out running with friends on a favorite path by the lake when Brian surprised her by waiting at one of the most scenic points with flowers and a ring.

FEATURED WEDDING
CARPENTER PHOTO & DESIGN
THE THEME Swapna and Brian envisioned an Indian wedding with an elegant and classy theme. Friday night was a “Sangeet,” which is a night of song, dance and celebration in Swapna’s family’s backyard. Saturday was the main wedding day, starting with a groom traveling to the wedding venue on a white horse surrounded by friends and family. He set off from Century Center and traveled to the Morris Performing Arts Center for the ceremony with the reception following at the Palais Royale.
30

A SUMPTUOUS SOUTH BEND WEDDING // Fea tur ed Wed d i ng
THE DRESSES Rather than having “the dress,” Swapna had three, all from India. The first was a traditional South Indian wedding sari for the ceremony and two “lengha cholis” (two-piece dresses) for both the reception and the Sangeet. The bridesmaids all wore custom pink saris that Swapna and her mom designed.
A FUNNY STORY The bride explained that in South Indian weddings, the bride and groom both put their hands in a pot filled with water to see who can find the ring first. The idea is the person who finds it is believed to be the dominant one. “All of my friends bet on me since I’m the type A, loud competitive one. Usually the guy will let the girl win at least once but Brian beat me all three times!”

WHAT WE
love
The use of elephants throughout, especially the tiny ones holding the place cards.
THE DÉCOR Champagne, ivory, blush, gold, and rose gold were the colors featured at the ceremony and reception. A large elephant centerpiece was located in the lobby of the Morris Civic, and elephants were depicted on the table numbers and menus, and little tiny silver elephants held the place cards. Vibrant orange and pink with green accents made a bold statement at the Sangeet.
32
WEDDINGDAY
THE CAKE
THE FLORAL
The cake was white almond raspberry with stenciled fondant and gold lustre with cascading ivory and rose flowers. If that wasn’t enough, guests were treated to additional chocolate raspberry champagne cake with fresh strawberries.
Ivory and blush roses in crystal vases made up the large centerpieces, with smaller vases containing the other arrangements. Crystal candelabras added to the elegance of the décor.
CARPENTER PHOTO & DESIGN
THE CEREMONY The traditional Indian ceremony involves the couple seeing each other for the first time when a curtain between them is lowered (Brian’s favorite moment). The ceremony took place under a “mandap,” which contained crystal chandeliers, a circular flower wreath, pink and lace fabric and rose flower accents. The bride and groom placed garlands around each other’s necks as a symbol of becoming husband and wife.

A SUMPTUOUS SOUTH BEND WEDDING // Featured Wedding
THE RECEPTION “My goal for the reception was for it to be very elegant and beautiful but at the same time, super fun,” Swapna says. “We did a very quick slow dance only to surprise everyone with a choreographed Bollywood dance with a bunch of friends which then opened the dance floor.”
ADVICE FROM THE bride
“Relax and have fun!”
CARPENTER PHOTO & DESIGN
SPECIAL MOMENT Swapna was overwhelmed at the Sangeet by all the effort people put into their dance/songs. She mentioned that her mom was sick the week before the wedding but found a way to perform a choreographed dance with her friends. She and Brian were very touched. 34

The Beauty Checklist For Your Wedding Have you heard that saying “Love looks good on you?” Have you ever noticed that people in love not only seem happier, but they appear more attractive? The term most often used is “glowing.” It’s common for friends and family to comment on your glowing face and the “stars” in your eyes right after you get engaged. According to science, these aren’t just things that people say. Studies indicate that emotions directly affect the body’s overall health. Overall health, of course, is directly linked to your physical appearance. This is all attributed to body chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine and serotonin are frequently called the “feel-good neurotransmitters.” Neurotransmitters control hormones. And what do you know? Hormones affect your skin. Dopamine is responsible for those bright, shining eyes as it is the brain’s pleasure chemical producing feelings like extreme happiness and excitement. Serotonin is the hormone that triggers your mood. Do you break out due to extreme stress? Your serotonin levels are probably suffering. Post-engagement, you are most likely looking as great as you are feeling. Fast forward 10 to 12 months and every day life and wedding planning can get in the way of your glowing skin and star-filled eyes. Not to mention that the stress hormones can induce breakouts and sleepless nights which trigger bags under your eyes and result in pale skin.
IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU BEGIN BEAUTY BOOTCAMP IMMEDIATELY AFTER YOUR FIANCÉ PUTS A RING ON YOUR FINGER OR AT LEAST SIX MONTHS PRIOR TO THE DAY YOU SAY “I DO.”
Stevenson Photography
Fortunately (and sometimes, unfortunately!) skin and beauty companies have made a fortune developing and marketing products and services that can combat and conquer most of this.
Hair
Waxing
HAIR IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PROCESS TO UNDO OR REPAIR BEFORE THE WEDDING DAY. It takes months to grow out so if you’re envisioning wearing your hair up, commit to growing it out as soon as possible. This is especially true if you have bangs—you may really love them now, but think of your wedding photos in years to come, especially if you’re having an outdoor wedding. Even if you are patiently waiting for it to grow, you should still schedule a few trims. Find a hair color and cut that you are comfortable with. Experimentation within a month of your wedding is a big no-no. Settle on a hair color you love at least two months before your wedding day and if necessary, get a touch up at least two weeks in advance. DEEP CONDITIONING TREATMENTS WILL LIMIT HAIR DAMAGE AND BREAKAGE, AND WILL ENSURE THAT YOUR HAIR IS LOOKING ITS BEST. You can opt for regular conditioning at home with a basic product, but feel free to splurge for at least one professional hair mask.
Your eyes are the window to your soul. Your eyebrows are the frame. You can have the most beautiful eyes in the world, but if you don’t have shapely eyebrows, no one will notice. If you already have eyebrows that you love, keep doing what you’re doing. GET A WAX AND EYEBROW TRIM A WEEK BEFORE THE WEDDING, JUST IN CASE YOUR SKIN BREAKS OUT FROM THE WAX. If you don’t have shapely eyebrows, start eyebrow rehab this very minute. Unfortunately, this often requires leaving your brows to grow out wildly and untamed to allow your technician to start shaping them how you like.

WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR FORMAL HAIRSTYLE FOR THE BIG DAY, START COLLECTING REALISTIC PHOTOS OF POTENTIAL POSSIBILITIES. Did you know there are tons of virtual hair websites available so you can upload your actual photo and try on tons of different colors, cuts and styles? This is a great way to envision what your hair will look like in your wedding photos. When you’ve narrowed it down to a few of your favorites, schedule a consultation with your stylist for his or her opinion on what would look and work best for you. Then set up a practice run.
As far as the other waxing areas go, like legs and the bikini line, most estheticians ask that you do not shave for approximately four weeks before your appointment. You may also want to make sure you do it once before your wedding wax because word on the street is that the first time is a little painful!
Face There are so many do’s and don’ts when it comes to skin care. ESTABLISHING A HEALTHY, SUN-PROOF, ANTI-AGING, HYDRATING SKIN CARE ROUTINE IS NOT ONLY ESSENTIAL TO YOUR WEDDING DAY, BUT TO THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. If you are struggling with acne, scarring or skin conditions and you haven’t already, consult with a dermatologist or esthetician right away. Together, you can devise a plan of attack to get your skin where you want it to be—acne free, hydrated and youthful. Regularly exfoliating dead skin allows new skin cells to emerge to the surface. HOWEVER, DON’T EXFOLIATE WITHIN A WEEK OF YOUR BIG DAY. Sometimes when the new skin cells emerge, so do all of the little ugly hidden things below the surface like pimples. Also, if you can find room in your budget, try to schedule a facial or two—but again, avoid having one too soon to your date. If you can’t afford a spa treatment, opt for the D.I.Y. spa products that you can do at home. Be sure to check reviews on each product so you know exactly what you’re getting before it’s applied to your sensitive skin. AT THE VERY LEAST, INVEST IN A GENTLE FACE WASH, ONCE-A-WEEK EXFOLIATING WASH, RECOMMENDED MOISTURIZER, AND UNDER-EYE CREAM TO ELIMINATE PUFFINESS AND DARK CIRCLES. And of course, hydrating yourself with plenty of H20 increases blood flow to the skin and purifies the body by removing toxins.
Nails Chances are, you will be getting your nails professionally done before the big day. However, there are plenty of pre-wedding tasks you can do to grow your nails. VITAMINS SUCH AS BIOTIN BOOST CRITICAL NAIL PROTEIN WHICH IS THE BUILDING BLOCK OF NAILS. CUTICLE OIL MOISTURIZES NAILS AND THE SURROUNDING SKIN. YOU SHOULD ALSO MAKE SURE TO KEEP YOUR HANDS HYDRATED WITH LOTION, ESPECIALLY DURING THE COLD WINTER MONTHS WHEN SKIN TENDS TO CRACK. When it comes to choosing a nail polish color on your big day, try to avoid bold, loud colors. Your nails will be front and center in many photographs, including holding the flowers and exchanging the rings.
Tanning While we’re on the subject of skin care, you are likely experiencing an overwhelming temptation to jump into a tanning bed. WITH RECENT SUNLESS TANNING OPTIONS AND LOTIONS ON THE MARKET, THERE REALLY IS NO EXCUSE TO PUT YOUR SKIN AT RISK FROM HARMFUL UV RAYS. Spray tanning and tanning lotions have progressed significantly since the days of cringe-worthy tans. If you use a tanning bed or even tan outdoors, your skin will obviously turn darker. But this darkened skin is a result of you altering your skin cells—they darken only when they are damaged or under attack. As you might imagine, this is not at all healthy for your skin. And since you’re already enduring much preparation to get your skin healthy, skip the tanning bed. IF YOU DO OPT FOR A SPRAY TAN, WE RECOMMEND GETTING A TRIAL SPRAY TAN A MONTH BEFORE THE WEDDING AND THEN A FINAL SPRAY FOUR TO DAY DAYS PRIOR TO THE WEDDING. Don’t forget to exfoliate your skin before applying a spray tan or tanning lotion— it removes the dead skin cells so your color is applied to fresh, new skin.
Body “Shedding for the wedding.” It’s a popular mantra when bride-tobe’s hit the gym before the wedding. DIETING AND CARDIO SEEM TO BE THE STRATEGY. BUT DON’T RULE OUT STRENGTH TRAINING AS PART OF YOUR ROUTINE. STRENGTH TRAINING ALSO BURNS CALORIES AND TONES YOUR MUSCLES SIMULTANEOUSLY. The majority of women tend to notice their arms in photos, especially in wedding photos. Arm yourself (no pun intended) with a pair of dumbbells and get those arms in tiptop shape.

“A very young groom and his best man returned from the military two days before the wedding. It was the first military wedding Jenny had ever done. The best man had actually lost his leg and was joking about how he was going to take the prosthetic leg off and fill it with beer. The DJ played “Proud to be an American” by Lee Greenwood and all of the very young soldiers stood in a circle on the dance floor with their glasses and girlfriends, toasting each other; staff members were crying throughout as a result!”

“From the start, this client had a very specific vision: the tents had to be all clear with white flooring. Clear tents and flooring is a pretty standard setup in this day and age, so after several phone calls and emails, we had put together a proposal. Whenever flooring is involved, there is a contingency put in place that a site inspection needs to occur to assess how level the ground is where the flooring is going to be placed.
Once the weather broke, our site inspection revealed that the surface was far from level and in fact, one side of the tent would be over eight feet off the ground. This was a first for us. Prior experience had only ever taken us to three or four feet off the ground. Installing a floor at this height is only one of the challenges—the other challenges include the construction of the tent and then ultimately, anchoring it safely to withstand wind loads.
The event planner assured us that it was extremely level and our basic plank-andboard, lay-down floor would be a sufficient subflooring for the event. At that time, there was still snow on ground so an accurate site inspection couldn’t be conducted, but the client agreed to put a deposit down anyway.
As the pictures reveal, we figured it out. Fortunately, the client respected that we had a contingency in the bid for unlevel surfaces and agreed to a significant quote increase to accommodate the unlevel surface.”

asking what she should do. The videographer and I were friends, having worked many weddings together, and we both started going through the list of photographers we trusted who might be available. I started texting one and immediately got a response. She was at an engagement shoot but could make the wedding. I assured the planner that this photographer knew the venue well and was excellent. I gave her info to the wedding planner, letting them sort out the details and focused on getting ready to start playing.
Ben Pancoast Photography
“A wedding I played recently was definitely memorable. While many are funny or have a blooper of some sort, this one was a lesson in team work. The wedding was in a barn in southwest Michigan. The wedding party and guests were all from the Detroit area. The wedding coordinator was from Detroit and had hired almost everyone from the Detroit area except me, the caterer, and the videographer. I arrived and unpacked the harp, organized my music, and set out to talk over details with the wedding planner. When I found her, she was in a state of near panic. The photographer had walked out citing artistic differences. The wedding was supposed to start in 30 minutes and the photographer was gone. The planner turned to me
The planner decided to delay the start of the ceremony to let the new photographer go over things with the bridal party and recreate some shots. She asked me if that would work for me and since I had been hired to play both the ceremony and cocktail hour, we decided this would count as part of the cocktail hour to keep the dinner on schedule. The caterer agreed to go ahead and open the bar early. The priest announced a brief delay and asked everyone to feel free to mingle and get a drink, I started playing and the new photographer went to work. Within 30 minutes, the ceremony started and everything else went smoothly. Afterward, the planner asked me how I knew who to call. I was surprised with the question. I told her that many of us work together on a regular basis and we know who we can count on and what each person’s strengths are. When you have a group of vendors who work together like that, we are all willing to help out and do whatever it takes to make the wedding happen as flawlessly as possible. Using local vendors for a destination wedding can be the difference between success and failure. While this wedding could have been a disaster, it will be memorable to me because it wasn’t.”
MEG RODGERS, HARPIST ST. JOSEPH, MI Sonya Byer Photography
“This wedding was in mid-summer. It was a beautiful day and then dark clouds quickly rolled in. We were all out in the gardens taking pictures before the ceremony when it hit. It was so intense that I put the bride in a corner of this outdoor structure with all of her bridesmaids and we literally made a human wall to protect her and her gorgeous gown! It passed and the ceremony went off in sunshine! She kept saying ‘rain on your wedding day is good luck!!’ Yes it is!!”
APRIL FALLON, WEDDING COORDINATOR FRIENDSHIP BOTANIC GARDENS MICHIGAN CITY, IN
“The groom was under the bride’s wedding dress ‘fetching the garter,’ and when he came up, his nose was gushing blood! You can even see the blood all over her dress in the photo. One of my favorite couples of all time and they of course, laugh about it now. What a great memory!”

The Wildflower Look “One of the biggest floral trends I have been seeing with my brides is the wildflower look. They tell me that’s what look they are going for and I know that they want a more natural and whimsical look. Bouquets and florals that aren’t so matchy matchy and have a larger variety of flowers which is more eclectic looking!” -KELSEY ZIELKE, OWNER OF THE SODUS BLOSSOM IN SODUS, MI
The Colagrossis
Foliage for Table Runners and Suspended Florals “Many brides are requesting textural table runners using mixed greens and foliage. There has also been a rise in compote-style centerpieces and lush, wild and draping bouquets. The biggest request that seems to be growing is suspended florals and foliage which is done using long trays or frames that run over the length of the guest and headtables.” -MARCO ALEXZONDRA, OWNER OF MARCO ALEXZONDRA FLORAL AND EVENT SERVICES IN GALIEN, MI
Studio Phrené
Less Rustic, More Glamour “Less rustic and more glamour is taking shape this year. Burlap and mason jars are on their way out and a more glamorous, timeless, vintage vibe is taking center stage. Our brides are still loving mismatched vintage-inspired containers and mercury glass for centerpieces, with lots of greenery and textural elements. Kings tables are also becoming very popular for receptions, rather than the traditional round, making way for long bespoke centerpiece designs or a lovely garland of greenery interspersed with “satellite” florals such as petite vases with single stems and the romance of candlelight is still ever-popular. Following this glamorous trend, silver, as an accent, is down-trending in favor of rose gold, gold, and copper.” -JOAN NEKRITZ OF MERCI BEAUCOUP FLORAL IN CALEDONIA, MI
Monochromatic Colors “Go monochromatic using one color! Do the whole wedding in tones and shades of one color, it’s an amazing look!” -SHAYA SHERWOOD OF CRYSTAL SPRINGS FLORIST IN BENTON HARBOR, MI

“We have seen an elegant refined rustic theme which will combine a loose look of flowers with elegant components – gold compotes, gold chiavari chairs, upscale linens, even spraying curly willow gold. Flowers within this setting are loose and classic with a new take on greenery. Romantic greens of jasmine and clematis with classic flowers of roses, gem spray roses, hellebore, astilbe, scabiosa!” -KAREN PACIFIC & TERESA KINDER OF ARTFUL BLOOMS IN BLOOMINGTON, IN

ou don’t have to mimic Jennifer Aniston’s nuptials to have a beautiful wedding that is a reflection of you and your fiancé. The experts you work with — caterers, planners, florists — are as cost conscious as you are and have an objective point of view paired with lots of experience. When planning my daughter’s wedding a few years ago, it became apparent that going over budget is one of the easier things to do in life – kind of like picking chocolates out of a box; it’s hard to stop once you get going. The most important piece of advice I received is to make sure the couple decides what means the most to them and concentrate on making those aspects happen. Maybe flowers are your thing and you want to be surrounded by fragrant blooms all day. Go for it, but compare prices.

JUST A FEW TIPS TO ACHIEVE SIMPLE, AFFORDABLE AND BEAUTIFUL: More and more brides are booking weddings on a day other than a Saturday to save money. Whether it is a Friday night buffet or a Sunday brunch, the possibilities are endless and the cost savings can be significant (in some cases by as much as 50 percent). Thursday nights are also gaining in popularity. Plan a smaller wedding and avoid cutting something you love. Wouldn’t you rather have 100 people enjoying everything you envisioned rather than 400 eating hot dogs outdoors?
Thierry Lyles Photography
Economize when you can. If your venue already has linens that coordinate with the room, you might use those and spend a little extra on something else such as some glittery, gorgeous, never-before-seen chair covers. If a beach wedding is your dream, but the venues are booked for the summer, consider a winter/beach theme. How much time would you spend on the beach anyway? There are lots of venues with water views without the hassle of the beach (sand in the shoes – not fun). The view is still beautiful and there are plenty of open weekends at hotels. Just pack some stylish faux fur. December through March weddings can result in significant cost savings. Have your ceremony and reception at the same place. It’s easier for guests and you’ll save on rental fees. Do you really need photographs of dancing during the waning hours of the reception? After having looked at thousands of these, they pretty much all look the same. Think about a full bar for the cocktail hour and switch to wine and beer and maybe a clever signature drink for the remainder of the reception. Be strategic about the flowers. If you’re having a buffet or food stations (rather than a sit-down dinner), arrangements could be placed there in lieu of the guest tables.

These cost-cutting measures can be decided at the beginning of the planning process so they are out of the way and you can move forward. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your vendors and trust your gut on the things that mean the most to you!

THE DO’S AND DO NOT’S OF WEDDING INVITATIONS
A.
C.
D.
You only get to make one first impression. That sentiment rings true in so many facets of our lives, but it’s especially applicable to your wedding. Despite the intention that your wedding is about two people in love, you also designed it to make a statement. Your wedding invitations are amongst the first details revealed to your guests and consequently, it gives guests their first impression of what your wedding will be like. At the same time, your invite serves as a platform for information and the itinerary for guests: the date, the location, the dress code, the menu and other pertinent details.
54
B.
WEDDINGDAY
Typically hiring a designer to create your invitations eliminates the stress and fear of making mistakes. But we are all about the D.I.Y. movement here at WeddingDay, so we understand that creating your own invitations is a little friendlier on the pocket. We suggest having more than one person proof your invitations before you send them out. Sometimes you stare at something so long, you glaze over what could be a misspelling or inaccurate information. And then there is the matter of etiquette. Many of the traditional etiquette rules have been disregarded and are now considered outdated, but when it comes to invites, people seem to easily become offended.
1.
3.
Do not
E.
include your registry information on your wedding invites. It gives off the impression that you are asking for gifts. Instead, include that information on your wedding website and encourage close friends and family to spread the word.
Do write guests’ names in full, using “Mr.
2.Do not
4.
write “no kids” on your invites. Instead, specify that your wedding is an “adults reception” or specifically list the names of the people who are invited. If people do RSVP with their children’s names, it is up to you to call and explain that kids are not invited.
and Mrs.” for married couples, “Doctor” for a doctor (whomever is the doctor should be listed first), “Ms.” for an unmarried woman over the age of 21, and “Miss” for an unmarried woman under the age of 21. For unmarried couples living together, address their names on separate lines.
Do
spell out words in the address like “Avenue” or “Street” on the envelope. Example: North Minnesota Avenue, not Minnesota Ave. N. and Saint Paul, Minnesota, not St. Paul, MN. Also, spell out dates: “Friday, the ninth of October, two thousand fifteen” not Friday, October 9, 2015.
5. Do
include your deceased parent’s name on the invitation if you so wish. Just do not make it sound like the invite is coming from your deceased father/mother. For example, do not say “Mr. John Smith and Mrs. Jane Smith request your presence...” Instead, make the invitation sound like it’s coming from you, like this: “Together with their families, Jenna Smith, daughter of John Smith and the late Jane Smith...”
6. Do
list your parents’ names or the names of people helping to pay the wedding bill on the wedding invitation. If you and your significant other are hosting, it’s perfectly acceptable to say “Together with their parents, Jenna and Wade Smith request...” or “Jenna and Wade Smith, together with their parents, request...” or you can leave mention of parents out altogether. There are a number of ways this can be worded. Find the wording that best fits your comfort level.
7.
8.
include a reception card with appropriate information if it’s being held in a location separate from the ceremony. If both events are in the same place, a reception card is not necessary. Make mention of the reception on your invite like “Dinner and Dancing to Follow” or “Reception to Follow.”
let guests know if you are not serving a complete meal at the reception. If you are having appetizers, or a dessert-themed reception, or a light meal, your guests need to know that in advance so they can prepare accordingly.
Do
Do
F.
9.
Do choose an invitation design
that reflects the theme of your wedding. Think of it as the branding element of your wedding. If you are having an outdoor, laid-back wedding, it would be confusing to send out an elegant black and white formal invitation. Remember, the invite gives guests their first impression or idea of what to expect at your wedding. The styles should match.
10. Do
send out the invitation at least six to eight weeks in advance of your wedding. Of course, you should give more time if you are planning a destination wedding or inviting out-of-state guests.

THE VISION Grand occasions deserve grand-scale attention. Ten-year anniversaries deserve celebrations, champagne and a cover shoot at one of the most historical and beloved venues in the area. And that’s precisely how WeddingDay Magazine is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year! Our vision for this shoot was to go above and beyond—to be upscale, elegant and extraordinary.
WEDDINGDAY 67
HAIR & MAKEUP While the dress, décor, and venue were all over-the-top details in this cover shoot, our bride’s hair and makeup took on a more subtle approach. The intent was to complement the grandiose features of the scenery with an understated look. Natural makeup with berry lips were used for her face with long lashes accenting her eyes. The bride’s hair was kept simple and sweet with a low bun and pinned twists.

A DECADE WORTH CELEBRATING // Cover Shoot
THE DÉCOR The WeddingDay team gave very little creative direction, allowing the professionals at Burn’s Rent-Alls and Crystal Springs Florist to rise to the occasion. We knew we had our hearts set on a classic-yet-chic color palette using black, white and gold. The rest of the details were left to the creative brilliance of Molly at Burn’s Rent-Alls and Shaya from Crystal Springs Florist. The two collaborated to create a decorative theme that incorporated both classic details and 2016 trends. “For the 10-year anniversary shoot, I really wanted to make a statement, but also implement elements out of
the ordinary. I wanted to show that you could use black linens and still have a very elegant set up,” says Molly. That “statement” was brought to life with a mix-andmatch style of centerpieces using various heights for visual interest and a floral garland (one of the biggest floral trends in 2016) which ran down the head table. More 2016 trends made appearances such as metallic décor and gold accents. Other decorative details came from the white chiavari chairs for the bride and groom, candelabras, votives, clarinet vases, and gold mercury china.
WEDDINGDAY 69
THE DRESS Our bride wore a striking Justin Alexander gown that immediately took center stage. The #8795 fit-and-flare dress and sweetheart neckline delivered a sense of drama that was fitting for the theatrical venue.

THE FLORAL Over-the-top flowers were used in every aspect of this cover shoot. Every day flowers had no place in this décor scheme. The centerpieces and tablescape were set with use of lush and elegant flowers that included white jumbo hydrangeas, “panda” anemones, “White O’Hara” garden roses, white standard roses, white astilbe and gold ting. To complete the look, each place setting was equipped with a white phalaenopsis orchid.
Our bride carried a more formal, larger bouquet filled with “White O’Hara” garden roses, “Million Star” astrantia, white lisanthus, silver dollar eucalyptus, white freesia and gold berries. Later, she transitioned to a smaller reception bouquet that made use of white phalaenopsis orchids, white astilbe and gold ting.

THE VENUE COVER SHOOT
The Palais Royale has served as a substantial landmark in the heart of downtown South Bend, Indiana ever since the 1920s. The ballroom is located within The Morris Performing Arts Center—another historical venue. The Palais’ rich history and flashy culture date back to before World War II when couples and friends went out dancing almost every night of the week. The sense of vibrancy and history is still very present as one walks through the doors of The Palais. When the time came to select a venue to celebrate our decade-long history, The Palais Royale immediately became the front-runner. With its recent renovations, the 8,800-squarefoot ballroom has been restored to its roaring 20s glory. Crystal chandeliers and intricate details grace the 35-foot ceiling, grandiose windows draw in tons of natural light, and a surrounding balcony offers sweeping views of the ballroom. Our cover shoot was inspired by the elegance, sophistication and glamour of The Palais, and we felt compelled to make sure each and every detail was just as extravagant.
