Greetings, LIFE Alumni and Friends! Did you see yourself in the picture? Chances are, if you attended the 2014 Fall CE event, you may have. During the Plenary Session on Friday morning, we took a minute to take the largest chiropractic selfie ever. Not only was this something fun to do and made a great image for the cover, but it truly is a historic photo of some of the best and brightest professionals in the greatest profession on earth. This is just a snapshot of what you missed if you didn’t make it this year—you can see a full recap in this issue—but don’t fret, because it will be back and better than ever Sept. 30-Oct. 4, 2015. This year is LIFE’s 40th anniversary, and it is always touching to see the number of alumni not just from LIFE that come back for the Fall CE staple event, but also alumni from other chiropractic colleges who have noticed how LIFE is doing things just a little bit differently than everyone else—we are leading! In fact, in September, we had the first National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) computer-based test in our brand new testing center on campus. Conversion of the exam from a paper and pencil format examination to a computed-based format has been a dream of both the NBCE and the chiropractic educational community for decades. LIFE and our students made history in moving chiropractic education forward with this event. At Life University, we are in the business of making an IMPACT—on our campus, within the local community and in the world around us. From the continuous improvements we make toward our undergraduate, graduate and professional degree programs, to the world-class professionals

we send out in a variety of health and wellness professions, one of our primary jobs is to send out “vitalistic disruptors” to the current, established system of “sick care” that perpetuates today’s society. However, as the leaders of the global vitalistic healthcare revolution, we are tasked with more responsibilities than those just on our own turf. Therefore, we have to go out and spread our message to others, which is why I am excited to announce the commencement of a two-year, 60-city IMPACT tour in 2015. The tagline for this tour is: IMPACT—“the intersection of innovation, prosperity and social change.” You will not want to miss out on this special event when it comes to your city, so stay tuned for an official announcement on when we will be in your city in the near future. The next time I write my letter for Your Extraordinary LIFE, it will be springtime, so I wish you well during this winter season. Don’t be a stranger until then; come to the campus where its truly about the philosophy, art and science of your incredible service to humanity and to see and feel the energy on campus. Also, make sure that even during the cold, dark months of the year, wherever you are, you still bring comfort to those around you by offering warm smiles and powerful adjustments that turn the power on. ON THE ROAD The Executive, Enrollment and Advancement teams at Life University are on the road year-round, hosting alumni events and making personal visits to connect and engage with our vibrant alumni and friends all over the country. You may have seen these familiar faces at a recent convention or in your private practice. In the past six months, the Advancement Team has collectively visited more than 160 alumni and friends! Here’s where we visited from mid-May to August: Pennsylvania LIFE took Philadelphia by storm for The Collegiate Rugby Championship (CRC), one of the biggest tournaments of the year for the LIFE Undergraduate Rugby Team.

In addition to showcasing our athletic prowess on one the biggest stages, we hosted a very successful After Hours in downtown Philadelphia. Thanks to our State Reps, Drs. Richard Cobb (’82), Steven Fleisher (’87) and Gary Scardino (’96), and Vice President of the International Alumni Association of Life University (IAALU) Stu Katzen (’97) for spreading the word! fell short of winning the championship match, we were thankful for the support and presence of our alumni and friends. By the weekend’s close, we recruited five additional State Reps, including Drs. Jeff Klein (’95), Brett Wartenberg (’87), Scott Brown (’89), T. Shane Palmer (’89) and Wendy Jacobs (’94). ALABAMA We had our game faces on as we headed down the road to Auburn for the Alabama State Chiropractic Association’s (ASCA) annual convention. In addition to hosting a packed alumni and friends breakfast, we also proudly sponsored Dr. Eric Plasker (’85) as a convention speaker. Dr. Darla Lasseter (’11) signed up as our third Alabama State Rep and Dr. Judy Lipka (’82), former president of the ASCA, was selected as the Judy Lipka 2014 Alabama Chiropractor of the Year. A few months later, Mary Ellen Leffard returned to Alabama to see some of our neighboring alumni and friends. Visits included new graduates Drs. Melissa (’14) and Jubal (’13) Matthews, who signed up as State Reps, State Rep Dr. James Fox (’87) and Dr. Diana Hudgins Brown (’90), who signed up as a class reunion co-chair.

SOUTH CAROLINA As part of the LIFE team spent time in Auburn, other members headed to the shore for the South Carolina Chiropractic Association’s (SCCA) annual convention in Myrtle Beach. It was standing room only at the LIFE-sponsored opening session by Dr. Eric Plasker (’85), who spoke on how to “Release the Bigness Within You.” LIFE also held a wellattended reception for our alumni and friends. Welcome Drs. Ron Swain (’05), Jeannine Rummel (’11) and Glenn Geada (’97) as your newest State Reps. NEW YORK As our 2013–2014 fiscal year came to a close, we had one final After Hours in Long Island. Held at the breathtaking Insignia Restaurant, Greg Harris and Mary Ellen Leffard had a great evening with some familiar Smithtown faces. Thanks to Drs. Peter Curcio (’88), Jessica DeGorter (’10), Scott Brunengraber (’99) and Michael Carnes (’06) for your support and Drs. Jonathan DeGorter (’13) and Phil Facquet (’90) for signing up as State Reps.

MISSOURI Mary Ellen Leffard kicked off the new fiscal year with a Midwest road trip. Her first stop was to see State Rep Dr. Robert Arnone (’02), who recently moved just blocks from charming downtown St. Charles. He is excited for additional space to be able to host students and lecturers in his practice. Down the road in St. Louis, Dr. Ken Osia (’82) welcomed Leffard with open arms into his practice. Having been a former tour guide, he gave her a personal tour of downtown St. Louis. ILLINOIS After wrapping up our Missouri visits, we crossed the Missouri border and headed into Illinois. Mary Ellen Leffard met with Dr. Patrick Komeshak (’96) and his wife Dr. Shannon Komeshak (’95), who both run a huge practice in Belleville. By the end of the visit, Patrick had agreed to be our third Illinois Sate Rep. GEORGIA “33 Principles” set the tone for the Georgia Chiropractic Council (GCC) annual convention held at the Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville, Georgia. LIFE sponsored a special evening out for prospective students, current students, doctors, CA’s and their staff. Attendees were invited to enjoy a special reception and an inspirational presentation by LIFE President Dr. Guy Riekeman, “The Power of One (Part II).” More than 70 people filled the museum’s amphitheater to hear Dr. Riekeman’s empowering message on how they can be leader in health care and their community. It was truly a great evening for all who attended. FLORIDA Leading up to the Florida Chiropractic Association (FCA) national convention, Mary Ellen Leffard visited local alumni and friends just outside Orlando. Visits

included Dr. Dennis Ostrowski (’92) of Sunshine Tables, State Rep Lisa MichelGreen (’06) and reunion co-chair Faye Golden (’09). In addition, Drs. Todd Bodanza (’95), Robert Lupo (’85), Christian Thompson (’00), Fred Freed (’85) and Steven Edelson (’95) all agreed to help with their upcoming 2015 reunion. While at the FCA convention, LIFE hosted a Hospitality Suite in an effort to connect with our alumni and friends in a more intimate setting. Over the course of the two nights, more than 75 people stopped by the suite with nine agreeing to join our State Rep tribe. ENGLAND Our sights were international-bound as LIFE made a visit to rugby alumnus Phil Delport (’86), who runs a very successful practice in Ewell, Surrey. The South Africa native spent the afternoon reminiscing with Erin Dancer. Although far away, he still keeps in touch with his rugby classmates and tries to attend local rugby matches as often as he can. He also made the long trek back to Marietta, Georgia, to attend our Fall CE with his family. l

Our annual Fall CE Event, held Oct. 1-5, was a tremendous success! Celebrating its fourth year, Fall CE has continued to bring excitement and energy to Life University’s campus. This year, more than 1,600 attendees from all over the world gathered for five days of learning, networking and socializing. A few tangible results include: •• 1,618 registered attendees with almost 1,500 attending classes •• 20 percent increase in attendance on Wednesday compared to last year •• 19 nutritionists, eight athletic trainers and 20 psychologists attended courses for their profession-specific licensure requirements •• Seven class reunions were held with reunion gifts totaling more than $40,000 •• Six new President’s Circle contributors •• 19 new State Reps and two International Reps •• 15 new LIFEforce 1000 doctors •• Two additions to the Path of Heroes: Ralph and Wilma Ungerank •• 800-plus attendees at Friday morning’s Plenary Session, “The Office of the Future” Dan Yachter, D.C.

The Generations Wall Unveiling To kick off the weekend, LIFE and the Bend family unveiled the Generations wall, the newest edition to campus. Serving as a marker to recognize past and current family lineage connected to LIFE and/ or Chiropractic, the wall will be the beacon that inspires other families to follow. Generations was made possible through the generous leadership gifts contributed by the Bend family, who understand the vision and importance of this project. Many individuals eagerly signed up to participate and secure their family’s place in the recognition. Contributions will be earmarked to support building the William M. Harris Center for Clinical Education.

30th and 35th Reunions The Classes of 1979 and 1984 each had their own reunions to reminisce and spend time with old friends. Friday evening, 25 members of the Class of 1979 and their spouses and guests attended the 35th class reunion dinner. Mentor and LIFE’s first faculty member Gerry Clum, D.C., was also present; and co-chairs, Drs. Mike Tetrault, Tom Klapp, Richard Olson, Jim Murdock, Mike Petrie and Mark Anthony, took the floor to think back about their time spent at what was then Life College. To end the evening and honor their 35th reunion, classmates were asked to immortalize their love and dedication to LIFE by writing their memories, thoughts or goals on a piece of paper. These memories were placed inside of the classes’ Peace Pole, which is planted in The Garden of Lasting Purpose on campus. In celebration of their 30th reunion year, 35 members of the Class of 1984 united in fellowship for their reunion breakfast Saturday morning. Drs. Tom Sidoti, Michael Fox, Sharon Gorman, Jean-Marc Slak and Gerry Clum addressed their classmates about why they choose to give back to LIFE. Afterward, all other classmates were invited to speak candidly about their love of LIFE. The breakfast concluded with a slideshow, reunion footage and a class picture.
Each year, LIFE hosts a party for our alumni and friends to reminisce and reconnect with old friends. This year, our party theme was “Boots, BBQ, & Bling,” and we had an amazing turnout of more than 250 people. The party was kicked off with some fun cowboy activities, and people gathered to play lawn games like horseshoes and corn hole. In addition, attendees had the opportunity to step into a westernthemed photo booth to take goofy photos. Class reunions were also celebrated for the Classes of 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009. Thank you to all the reunion chairs who helped make this event possible and to all of the generous donors who contributed to their class reunion gifts! State Rep Reception To finish off the weekend, the Alumni Relations Department hosted a reception for State and International Reps to network, mingle and suggest program improvements. The program, which was launched in January 2013, helps connect alumni and friends worldwide back to LIFE. Our Tribe of representatives helps maintain contact with local alumni and friends and the University. In total, our program has flourished to a total of 145 representatives. Inaugural Alumni Awards The International Alumni Association of Life University (IAALU) is pleased to announce recipients of the 2014 Inaugural Alumni Awards. Through their professional accomplishments and personal service, seven honorees were selected as representatives of professional success, social contribution and cultural change. These outstanding individuals were honored at the Lasting Purpose Recognition Lunch held during LIFE’s 2014 Fall CE Event. THIS YEAR’S RECIPIENTS ARE:
Lorenzo E. Marchese, Jr., D.C. (’84) Lasting Purpose: To Love Award Honors an individual who exemplifies his/her love and pride for LIFE Recognized by his peers as one of LIFE’s most ardent supporters, Dr. Larry Marchese has demonstrated the highest level of pride and love for Life University. In addition to being a President’s Circle contributor and a class reunion co-chair, he selflessly serves as president of the IAALU Board of Directors. When Marchese isn’t advocating LIFE and Chiropractic through various social media channels, he is at LIFE-sanctioned events, including rugby matches, Fall CE and student recruitment events. Aside from his loyal service to LIFE, Marchese is also a dedicated professional and political leader on both

the state and national levels. He has a tremendous spirit that truly exemplifies Lasting Purpose—an ideal we hold so dear at LIFE.
Linda Eisen-Slak, D.C. (’84) State Rep of the Year Honors a State Rep who actively engages, educates and reconnects their state alumni and friends to LIFE LIFE’s State Rep program, which kicked off in early 2013, aims to reconnect local state alumni and friends to the University. When asked if she would serve as one of the first liaisons of the program, Dr. Linda Eisen-Slak enthusiastically agreed and has since been a model State Rep. In addition to hosting the first After Hours in her Massachusetts home, Eisen-Slak has recruited three other State Reps in the state, planned a LIFE get-together in conjunction with the state association meeting and provided candid feedback to advance the program. Her personal commitment of time and resources has been instrumental in ensuring LIFE alumni and friends remain connected to the University no matter where they live.
Kevin Fogarty, D.C. Honorary Alumnus Award Honors a non-LIFE alumnus who has demonstrated exceptional commitment and support for the mission and spirit of LIFE Dr. Kevin Fogarty makes it his life work to support vitalistic principles, and he is undoubtedly a strong supporter and friend to
LIFE. Throughout his career, Fogarty has consistently supported LIFE’s mission and vision, and he has worked tirelessly to advance the University and Chiropractic. In addition to financially supporting LIFE through the President’s Circle, he humbly serves as chairman of the development committee and actively recruits students through LIFEforce 1000. While in the field, he has served as former president of his state association and has received countless accolades and honors. Fogarty lives with a sense of purpose that is often greater than one individual, and we are honored for his commitment and support.
Michael Viscarelli, D.C. (’10) Young Alumnus Award Honors a younger LIFE alumnus (graduated within the last 10 years) for his/her outstanding professional achievements Compassion is a consistent theme in Dr. Michael Viscarelli’s resume, and it captures the essence of his remarkable success over the past four years. With hard work and determination, Viscarelli co-built successful entrepreneur ventures, AMPED and LAUNCH, to provide mentorship and development programs for chiropractors. Affectionately known as the “student guardian,” Viscarelli provides aspiring chiropractors the necessary training and inspiration to grow their businesses. He proactively visits local colleges, offers numerous Google Hangouts and regularly invites students into his private practice. In addition, Viscarelli is a champion in his community and is dedicated to serving others.
Eric Plasker, D.C. (’85) Distinguished Alumnus Award Honors a LIFE alumnus who has reached the pinnacle of success in his/her career and have brought credit to themselves and LIFE Dr. Eric Plasker is not only practicing his soul purpose, he’s living it. The international bestselling author of the 100 Year Lifestyle makes it his life work to promote a new healthcare model that includes chiropractors as leaders in their communities. In addition to speaking at virtually every chiropractic college, state association and international association, Plasker has been featured in hundreds of TV, radio and print media pieces. Within five years, his wellness messages have touched more than one million around the world. Today, he aims to create a tribe of strong practices inspired to be passionate about wellness and Vitalism. Plasker embodies the spirit of LIFE and is one of the profession’s most dynamic leaders.
Chuck “River” Ribley, D.C Fundraising Volunteer Award Honors an individual who demonstrates exceptional leadership in raising money and organizing groups of volunteers for major fundraising projects that benefit LIFE Since the beginning, Dr. Chuck “River” Ribley has been one of the most passionate and benevolent supporters of LIFE, not only through his support financially, but also through his expertise in fundraising, leadership and stewardship. As LIFE’s founder and former board chairman, Ribley has devoted himself to the enlistment of others so that LIFE could continue to grow. He led the 2003-2004 fundraising efforts to save the school and most recently, garnered donations for the Generations wall. He exhibits the best qualities of a volunteer: extraordinary generosity, commitment to the cause and the willingness to do whatever needs to be done.

LIFEFORCE 1000 AWARDS During the July 2014 LIFE Vision Seminar, LIFEforce 1000 conferred service awards to a few insiders who have been exemplary in their service over the last year. Drs. Laurie and Lou Briegel (’82), Dr. Dawn Cadwallader (’96) and Dr. Eddy Diaz (’96) were recognized in front of their peers with the Majestic Eagle Service Award. Dr. Sharon Gorman (’84) was presented with the LIFEforce 1000 Chiropractor of the Year Award. These five outstanding doctors have distinguished themselves by being symbols of vision, leadership, bravery, courage, honor, pride, determination and grace. These chiropractors, like eagles, live in the heights of possibility. They set goals, discuss ideas, inspire others and press on toward Pictured (l-r): Drs. The Bend Family Donor Legacy Award Honors an individual, couple or family that has made a significant impact on the University through financial contributions For 1996 LIFE alumna Amie Bend, D.C., her husband Rich Giuli and her parents Dr. and Mrs. Richard and Barbara Bend, ensuring the legacy of LIFE is a family affair. They are active leaders that support the work and growth of the University in many ways. The Bend family is also a chiropractic legacy, each member with their own special story to
tell. Together, through their generous contributions to the Generations wall, they are able to leave something behind that will forever symbolize LIFE’s lineage, and in that spirit, the Bend family has ensured LIFE’s dream will remain an ongoing reality. l

President’s Report | 2014 For fiscal year July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2014
Moving Forward Relentlessly One more fiscal year is in the books, and it was yet another that saw tremendous growth for Life University’s brand and the chiropractic profession. Much of that growth can be attributed to the thousands of you who have contributed your time, talents and treasure to making this past fiscal year one to remember. With a significant increase in alumni engagement, including more donors, State Reps and LIFEforce 1000 doctors, our financial integrity has been further strengthened to unprecedented levels that have us positioned to continue making progress toward our 20/20 Vision. One landmark highlight from this past fiscal year was the launch of the quarterly LIFE Vision Seminar. LIFE Vision is a two-day event designed to bring current and future chiropractic leaders with Life U’s values and vision together to connect and recharge. Think of it like TED for chiropractors. Hundreds of great chiropractic minds and hearts all come together to pool their insights and energy, remind themselves why they love what they do and teach themselves how to do it better. The inaugural LIFE Vision seminar was held the weekend of July 26-27, 2013, and the unique philosophy-driven presentations delivered from some of the most esteemed chiropractors in the profession have made it a can’t-miss event every quarter. Another highlight from this past fiscal year was the 18% Tipping Point Campaign, a campaign for Chiropractic, by Chiropractic. The Tipping Point is derived from Malcolm Gladwell’s research that when 18 percent of a culture adopts

an idea, product or service, it goes from a rare phenomenon to an unstoppable movement. How do we reach this magical 18 percent number, you ask? That’s where AmpLIFEied comes in—a free social media platform that anyone can join to connect all their social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.) for the purpose of sharing messages to a wider audience with just a single click. Giving, Loving, Serving Pam Stucky-LaGuardia, D.C. (’90), comes from a large chiropractic family, two of which are set to graduate from Life University in 2015, so it comes as no surprise that she and her husband and fellow LIFE graduate Jay LaGuardia, D.C. (’90), are proud capstone supporters of one of the newest markers on the University’s campus, Generations. The Generations wall, unveiled during the 2014 Fall CE, stretches 90 feet in length and is located in front of the Learning Resources Center. It recognizes families with multiple generations of LIFE graduates or chiropractic families with at least one LIFE graduate. “It seemed a natural fit to acknowledge our family legacy of 20 chiropractors,” Stucky-LaGuardia says
when explaining why she, her husband and Drs. Steve and Cindy Mickelson’s (Stucky-LaGuardia’s brother and sister-in-law) support the Generations project. The Mickelsons graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1975, and they have chosen to support LIFE because of what it stands for. Stucky-LaGuardia adds, “It’s important to give back to the establishment that gave you the initial tools necessary to be successful.” Stucky-LaGuardia’s father, L. Joe Stucky, D.C., is the founder of Stucky Chiropractic Center, which has served the Eau Claire, Wisconsin, community for 55 years. StuckyLaGuardia and her husband took full ownership of her father’s practice in 1994 and continue to own and practice there today. Stucky-
LaGuardia’s parents were initial founders and supporters of both LIFE and Life Chiropractic College West up until their passing. “Our family lives by my Dad’s philosophy,” Stucky-LaGuardia notes. “’When you take care of patients according to their needs, your needs will be met.’ It is that simple. Success, happiness and wealth in life come from giving, loving and serving. This is how we were raised, and our family will continue to pass on this philosophy for generations to come.”

However, she is an ambassador for LIFE not only due to the skills she acquired during her time here, but also because of where she sees the University heading in the future. “LIFE attracts incrdible people. They come in all ages and previous professions to learn how to be amazed by the magic of the human body,” she says. “We learn how to help people love and care for their physical wellbeing.” O’Gorman truly believes that all LIFE alumni should give back to their school. “It’s the cycle of life,” she continues. “Life College was built on dreams and hard work, and Life
University is a continuation of those dreams and hard work. We should all help.” Her example of service is O’Gorman one that is exemplified throughout her entire life, as her 30-plus years of being in practice serves as a daily reminder of the benefits that one can receive when they are the ones who give. “My service is my time and knowledge,” O’Gorman says. “I am fortunate to have a job whereby the end of the day brings a feeling of having achieved a life of service.”

A LIFE of Giving Sidney B. O’Gorman, D.C. (’83), is a LIFE alumna and new scholarship donor who lives and practices locally in Atlanta at Cotton Exchange Chiropractic. She recently established The Gift of Mirth Scholarship, which is dedicated in memory of Dave Auten, D.C. (’83), who passed away unexpectedly in June 2012. “I believe that very special people are drawn to our profession,” O’Gorman explains. “I want to support them in their journey by helping to ease their financial barriers.” During her time in practice, O’Gorman, like many other LIFE alumni, has realized just how fortunate she was to receive her

University Highlights (July 1, 2013–June 30, 2014) • Finished the year with revenues of $900,000 in excess of budget and expenses $2.4 million less than budget, producing a positive change in net assets and an improved cash position. • Ninth consecutive year where financial performance was better than budgeted. • Received $75,000 donation from Mr. Richard Giuli and Dr. Amie Bend for the Generations project. • Received $46,806 donation from Chiropractors with Compassion for the International Scholarship I. • Launched LIFE Vision Seminar, which is a two-day shot of high-energy, high-impact inspirational and educational moments designed to bring current and future chiropractic leaders of all perspectives together to connect and re-charge. • Launched the landmark 18% Tipping Point campaign in conjunction with AmpLIFEied, a social media network for shared content on Chiropractic and vitalistic health care. • Men’s Club rugby team won their second consecutive Division I national championship, Undergraduate Rugby team finished as runner-up in the Division 1-A national championship and our Men’s 7s team finished made it to the semifinals in the Collegiate Rugby Championship, appearing live on NBC and NBC Sports Network. • Intercollegiate Women’s Swimming, Women’s Wrestling and Women’s Rugby were announced as new sports to come for Fall 2014. • Men’s basketball made its sixth consecutive trip to the NAIA National Championship Tournament. • Hosted more than 1,600 chiropractors at the 2013 Fall CE Event.

LIFE’s Campus Report BY WILL BROOKS LIFE UNIVERSITY IS VERY PROUD OF THE EXPONENTIAL GROWTH that it has seen since being founded as Life College 40 years ago. It’s a constant and exciting challenge for the University to find new ways to maintain the tradition of excellence already established, but also improve upon that excellence to break boundaries that once may never have been considered attainable. Whether it’s by adding physical markers that honor the chiropractic profession or those that helped make it to what it is today (i.e. Bell Tower, Eternal Flame, Path of Heroes), or by creating new events with the goal of gaining more community awareness of all that it is that LIFE has to offer (12 undergraduate and four graduate degrees, in addition to the flagship Doctorate of Chiropractic degree), the University is always striving to improve it’s campus to reflect LIFE as the thought leader in vitalistic health care. One such improvement to campus in 2014 is the Safety Pin at the entrance of Celebration Plaza. The closed Safety Pin was originally conceived as a chiropractic metaphor and represents the neurological process of connecting the brain with the body, thus coordinating all the functions of life. It also represents the principle of how the body interacts with and adapts to the environment. The Safety Pin remains open as a daily reminder of our commitment to educate and care for the world by correcting nervous system interference through our chosen disciplines, thus reconnecting the individual with his/her innate potential and the environment that nourishes us. When we have corrected all interferences in every

person, we will then close the Safety Pin. Mission completed. In addition to the establishment of the Safety Pin on campus, 2014 has seen an influx of new events on campus that are expected to be future staples at the University. LIFE hosted more than 500 members of the community at its inaugural Party of LIFE, a community back-toschool block party with raffles, giveaways, informational tables for LIFE degrees and a whole lot more. Also, a new, three-part concert series was developed—Sounds of LIFE— with local, up-and-coming artists from a wide variety of genres being represented, food trucks and VIP cabanas in the beautiful Standard Process Amphitheater in Lyceum Park. Although the last concert of 2014 has passed, look out for information on our 2015 Sounds of LIFE concerts. LIFE hopes these new events can become as popular as the annual Lights of LIFE, which will be held from Thanksgiving Day through New Year’s Eve. In its 25th year, Lights of LIFE has grown to be known as the most affordable holiday light show in the Southeast. Last year, more than 100,000 visitors traveled through LIFE’s campus to take in the twinkling glow of more than one million lights. Speaking of Lights of LIFE, there is one more new event on tap for the 2014 year that you still have a chance in which to participate. Dec. 6 will mark the inaugural date for Run the Lights of LIFE, a 5K run and 1K fun run, that will begin at 4:30 p.m. and end by viewing the Lights of LIFE and enjoying hot cocoa, s’mores and an ugly sweater contest. Keep in Touch with The International Alumni Association of Life University (IAALU) is pleased to welcome two new representatives to its Board of Directors, Drs. Amanda Hess (’03) and Jeff Getbehead (’09). The IAALU Board of Directors is comprised of alumni volunteers who are leaders in their communities and give tirelessly of their time to promote Life University. Hess will spearhead the Philanthropy Committee and garner support for the President’s Circle. Getbehead will focus his efforts on the growth and expansion of the State Rep program. We welcome their expertise and insight to the Board and look forward to seeing them in action! Dr. Vincent Perri (’81) recently published his seventh book, The Healing Space: Understanding the True Nature of Healing, which focuses on two people in a serious unconditional dialogue and how a space between them can allow for deeper healing. Perri wrote this book to aid practitioners and laypersons who are interested in helping people suffering from grief or illnesses. Congratulations to Dr. Jean-Marc Slak (’84), who was named Chiropractor of the Year by the Massachusetts Chiropractic Society. Slak was chosen for this

award in recognition of his consistent dedication, leadership and commitment to chiropractic. Slak has been serving the Bedford, Massachusetts, community since 1987 and celebrated his 30-year class reunion at Life University this past fall—an honor well-deserved!
Association, LIFEforce1000 and the Life University Rugby program. He is an avid lecturer and program speaker. He maintains two private practices in California and West Virginia and recently moved to San Diego to bring the message of chiropractic to the sick and suffering.
Dr. Art LeVine (’87) was this year’s Honoree at the Florida Chiropractic Association’s (FCA) Boca Raton Summer Convention on June 13. In addition to generously serving his time to the FCA, LeVine serves in other leadership roles for the American Chiropractic Association and the Congress of Chiropractic State Association. He is a five-time recipient of the FCA Kudos Award and has twice been voted Broward Outstanding Chiropractic of the Year. He recently took on the role of chairman to the FCA Exploratory Committee and hopes to positively change the nature of insurance reimbursements in Florida and create a paradigm shift in how people work with insurance carriers. He maintains four private practices in Broward and Dade County.
Congratulations to Pennsylvania State Rep Dr. Lawrence Bagnell (’91), who recently competed in his first-ever down and dirty muddy obstacle course. He finished 822 out of 2,100 overall and 40th out of 72nd in his age group. Bagnell could be seen throughout the race supporting LIFE and the rugby team by wearing his Life U jersey. Upon crossing the finish line, he was joined by co-workers and patients.
Congratulations to California State Rep Dr. Danny Gambino (’90), who was named California Chiropractic Association (CCA) Doctor of the Year. In addition, he received CCA’s Distinguished Service Award. Gambino is active with the Life University Alumni
Dr. Richard (Dick) A. Whitaker (’95) passed away on July 9. He owned Foundation Chiropractic in Athens, Georgia, and was described by his patients as kind and generous. He is survived by his wife, Denise. Our thoughts and prayers with the Whitaker family.

Scott Paton (’00) spoke at the Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) headquarters in Zurich on Sept. 19. Patton spoke alongside leading figures from a variety of disciplines such as politics, business, academia and non-governmental organizations. Other speakers included ex-gold Olympians Katerina Witt and Robert Korzeniowski. Patton’s 13-year-old son joined his father at the summit to allow him an opportunity to meet key leaders from around the world and learn the product of hard work. Patton owns a successful practice in Lutz, Florida, and has also spoken at the 2004 Greece Olympics and at the European Parliament in 2010. Dr. Josh Wagner’s (’10) article, “Taking Yes for an Answer,” was recently published in Chiropractic Economics. The article details the importance of learning effective strategies to overcome patient objections. Wagner has authored e-books on fibromyalgia and nutrition, and most recently created The Perfect Patient Funnel System (PPFS) for chiropractors to strengthen their practices and minimize stress. In late August, he hosted a PPFS Mastermind Retreat in Oahu. He maintains his private practice in New York.

Talk about legacy! The Rodnick-Rubinstein family gathered in front of The Hands Sculpture to celebrate the graduation of LIFE’s newest alumni, Dr. Ruvayn Rubinstein and his wife, Sara Rodnick-Rubinstein (’14). Both of their fathers, Drs. Henry Rubinstein (’83) and Corey Rodnick (’83), have been close friends since they met at Life University orientation in 1980. After 34 years, these two families have united together as one big chiropractic dynasty—Sara and Ruvayn mark the 10th and 11th chiropractors in their families. The families joined them as they crossed the stage at graduation and it was quite the crowd.
She practiced in Okemos, Michigan, for over 30 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Rassel family.

With the passing of Dr. Jim Sigafoose, the chiropractic profession has lost another of its iconic figures, and Life University has lost a friend, former Board of Trustee member and cofounder of the University. Sigafoose passed away on July 3 surrounded by his family. Our profession has been blessed with colorful figures who both enlivened and frustrated its leaders and practitioners. It would be hard to find someone more colorful than Sig. Thank you for a life well-lived! l

Who Will Receive Your Property? A Look at Beneficiaries BY GREG HARRIS When making lifetime decisions, deciding who your property should go to upon your death may be less complicated than knowing how to make that transfer. Understanding how to give property could be the difference in avoiding probate court, certain taxes and the ability to pass the property on at all. First, it’s important to know that there are several types of beneficiaries. There are primary beneficiaries, contingent beneficiaries, life estate and final recipients, minors that receive trust income and debtors that receive forgiveness and restricted beneficiaries. An example of how these beneficiaries are included in a will can be read in the last
will and testament of Benjamin Franklin— now a public document. Let’s focus on the life estate and final beneficiaries. A life estate bequest passes on your property to a beneficiary—could be single individual or couple—for their use during their lives. Following the lifetime of a life estate beneficiary, the property is usually transferred to a final beneficiary, which can be a person or nonprofit such as Life University. Do you have minors under your care? If you do and you own property, you should consider creating a trust for minors or possibly a trust for your grandchildren if they have older parents. Minors won’t likely have the knowledge to manage
property. Selecting a property manager of a trust is an option to consider, whether it be a family member, friend or institution. A trust for minors will provide direction for managing assets, distribute income to the minors and indicate the age and method by which property is distributed to them. Pitch It! Brings Innovative Student Projects to LIFE In 2013, the University Advancement Division launched a new student fundraising program called Pitch it! Funding resources are limited for student clubs, often making it difficult for clubs to execute projects and attend events. Pitch It! gives clubs the opportunity to submit project ideas in need of funding assistance. Within the first year, the Advancement Division helped raise more than $3,400 for the following clubs: ICPA Family Wellness Club, The Nutrition Club and Vital Source. LIFE is excited to announce the new projects for the 2014–2015 program, and we hope your support will help bring these ideas to life.
The League of Chiropractic Women: LIFE Chapter With a goal of $3,000, the club will host the second annual Afternoon Tea, a way to give back and empower women in the LIFE community and in Chiropractic.

LIFE U’S ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT CONTINUES to expand its offerings for student-athletes. For the 2014– 2015 academic year, there will be 11 intercollegiate teams representing the Life U Running Eagles. We have also joined the prestigious Mid-South Conference and will compete for conference championships in six sports. There has been some re-organizing in the department. John Barrett has decided to step down as athletic director to focus solely on coaching basketball and becoming a special assistant to President Guy Riekeman, D.C., for upcoming initiatives. Under Barrett’s tenure, various Life U teams have won five national championships, 17 student-athletes have earned All-American status, four have been recognized as Champions of Character by the NAIA and one has been named an NAIA Scholar-Athlete. Bill Firnbach, long-time associate athletic director, has been named to replace Barrett. Barrett has been grooming Firnbach for this role for several years and the transition has been seamless. Director of Rugby Dan Payne has been named assistant athletic director. The Athletic Department has also revamped its website. Please go to LifeRunningEagles.com and check it out. With the new website coming online, LIFE also updated its Eagle Head logo. As we move into a new era for Life U athletics, we felt is was time to modernize our logo and incorporate the light green that fans and foes have come to recognize,
while respecting the tradition and history of the previous logo. We hope you like the new look! Some of you may wonder why Life U continues to expand its athletic department. As a full university that aspires to provide the authentic college experience for all students, having athletic teams fits that bill. Additionally, offering scholarships for qualified student-athletes is a way to increase enrollment and create another feeder program for our advanced degrees. Furthermore, as the world’s largest chiropractic college, athletics is a way to tell the chiropractic story. At the heart of Chiropractic and Vitalism is human performance. Our student-athletes are the epitome of optimum performance. The combination of many of our degree programs is at work inside the bodies and minds of our student-athletes: exercise science, nutrition, positive psychology and, of course, Chiropractic. Having highperformance individuals wearing the Life U uniform, appearing on other college campuses and being broadcast on television and webcasts is an incredible way to showcase that story. There are numerous students in the chiropractic program today who first heard of Life U and Chiropractic through an athletic experience—either watching or participating. l
