Are you and your car ready for summer? Make sure your motor is ready...

Have you got everything you need?

Your car should be fully serviced and check it's in good shape. Your holiday is often the biggest challenge to you car, and when it's most likely to develop a problem.

Have you fully updated your satnav? Or do you have a road map in the glove compartment? Is your mobile phone fully charged, and do you have the number of your rescue and recovery company in its contact list?

Make sure you Check your engines oil and coolant levels, along with brake, clutch and power steering fluid levels. Also very important is to make sure your tyre pressures are correct - have you allowed for hot weather and higher loading? Your car's handbook will give you the figures. And don't forget your spare tyre. Is it in good condition and at the correct pressure?

Also Take a bottle of screen wash with you. You will want to keep your screen as clean as possible. You may also want to consider having a fire extinguisher in the car, just in case. And don't overload your car - be particularly careful with your roof rack. Heavy items can unbalance your car.

Give your windscreen a good clean. It'll soon get messy on most journeys. While you're doing that, take a good look at your windscreen wipers (and don't forget the rear wiper, if you have one). If they're at all suspect, replace them.

Don't forget you and your passengers, either. Pack some cold drinks and snacks to keep everyone happy.

Have a look at your lights - perhaps get someone else to make sure they're working as you operate them - and make sure they're clean and free from mud.

Let the journey begin! If you have allergy sufferers on-board, keep the windows closed and the air conditioning on. Take care you're not dazzled by bright sunshine. Wear sunglasses and use your car's visors when the sun is low in the sky. In the event of a thunderstorm, slow down because braking distances can double with water on the road. Also, make sure you keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. If you have your family pets with you, never leave them in your vehicle, as heatstroke can prove fatal for dogs, and other animals can suffer badly. So take them with you, but make sure they don't spend too long in full sun. They will be happier and healthier in the shade. If this seems a long list of things to do, they really won't take a lot of time and effort. And they could be the difference between a safe, enjoyable summer and one that's memorable for all the wrong reasons.

A big doggy day out! This years Dogs Unleashed at the Bakewell Showground 22nd and 23rd June, promises to be the best yet! This national doggy event attracts visitors and competitors from all over the country. There are pre-entered agility and flyball competitions, lurcher racing and dog shows. One of the most popular attractions is the Fun Dog Show. This is the biggest fun dog show in Derbyshire and has some excellent prizes. This has a massive following of dedicated doggie people who return year after year for an amazing day just filled with everything doggy. The main ring this year has some great new and exciting displays as well as welcoming back old favourites like displays from Derwent Valley Gun Dog Display Team and PADs dog display team. The main ring finishes off each day with Terrier racing which always proves to be very unpredictable! You can even enter your own dog. All the competitions and attractions have their own ‘have a go’ events so you can try with your own dogs. Some of the ‘have a go’ events include gun dog scurries, agility, heal work to music, simulated coursing and fastest recalls. The most exciting, fun to watch ‘have a go’ attractions are the three above ground doggy swimming pools! These pools are really popular and so much fun whether you are watching or having a go. The larger two pools are used for experienced dogs to have a swim, play fetch and for distance jumping competitions. The smaller pool is for puppies and dogs needing a bit more encouragement. All pools always have someone in the water to help with the dogs confidence. Along with a huge amount of trade stands, catering stands, bar, bouncy castles and children’s rides the show can make for a great family day out. Banana Cake

Method 1. Grease and line a 2lb loaf tin. Melt butter, sugar and vanilla in a saucepan over a medium heat.

Preparation Time: 10 min Cooking Time: 35 min Ready in: 45 min

2. Remove from heat and add the mashed bananas, mix well. 3. Add the egg, mix well.

Serves: 10

4. Stir in the flour and the milk. Ingredients • 125g butter • 150g caster sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 egg, beaten • 2 very ripe bananas, mashed • 190g self raising flour • 60ml milk

5. Pour into the prepared tin, sprinkle with a tablespoon of demerara sugar to give a crunch topping if liked. 6. Bake at 170 C / Fan 150 C / Gas 3 for 35 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool and enjoy!

Thai Heaven As I arrived at All-Siam on a Monday evening I could have convinced myself it was the weekend. The tables were full of diners and the waitresses were busy bringing out beautiful dishes of colourful food. My first thought was ‘am I really on Ecclesall Road or on holiday!’ The sun was shining on the outside of this beautifully decorated restaurant but there was plenty of warmth coming from the friendly staff as we were greeted (in traditional Thai style) and shown to our table by restaurant owner, Pim. Pim has owned All-Siam for the past 4 and a half years. She definitely runs a tight ship - the restaurant is pristine, from the gleaming white tablecloth to the beautiful fresh flower displays and smartly dressed staff. I was hoping the food lived up to the look of the restaurant. Looking through the vast menu myself and my colleague Sam were unsure what to have so we decided on the ‘Pearls of All-Siam’ starter. This is a platter of chicken on toast, golden crispy prawn cakes, chicken wrapped in thin pastry and whole prawns along with Thai seasoned pork balls wrapped in vermicelli and served on a bed of fresh orange slices drizzled in Thai sauce and sprinkled with roast coconut, then served with sweet chilli and plum sauce. Pim also recommended we tried the speciality dish Chor Ladda - steamed dumplings stuffed with Thai seasoned chicken and prawn, served with a hot and sweet chilli dip. Whilst waiting for our starters to arrive the attentive staff filled our glasses with fresh water and took our drinks orders. This was a Monday night and although All-Siam have a fabulous and very reasonably priced drinks and cocktail menu we opted for a mocktail. These were beautifully presented and tasted superb. Our starter soon arrived and all I could say was WOW. I knew that if this tasted as good as it looked then our tastebuds were in for a real treat. I have never seen food presented so beautifully, each dish was like a work of art, we didn't know whether to eat it or take a picture.

The dumplings were purple in colour (apparently this comes from a flower used as an ingredient) and they tasted superb. The prawns were juicy and the chicken toast cooked to perfection. I couldn't stop looking at the displays of food that were coming out of the kitchen as the diners were being served. The staff here are probably the best I’ve experienced, constantly ensuring that you are happy and have everything you need without being over the top (the chef and front of house are both from a 5 star hotel background and this clearly shows) . I'm a big fish fan so I opted for Pla Yum Mamuang - Himmapan - deep fried sea bass topped with a young mango and cashew nuts. I was delighted as the fish was fresh and the mango and nuts worked so well to keep the dish light and tasty. Sam opted for a Massaman curry - lamb cooked in rich peanut butter and potato curry with sticky rice. She was extremely pleased with her choice and said the lamb was tender and the rice was the best she had ever tasted. We were also advised to try the Pud Thai, a traditional stir fried noodle dish with eggs, prawns, bean sprouts and spring onions. This was a great combination although I thought I was going to burst at the seams! The portions at this restaurant are extremely generous and all the food is produced on the premises. You can taste the quality as soon as you start to eat. The Taxing Issue of Inheritance The Taxing Issue of Inheritance The Taxing Issue of Inheritance Most people have heard of inheritance tax, but very few understand how it relates specifically to their estate. There’s no shame in that, believe me! The regulations are complex and subject to change, which is why professional advice is so important when you are making a will. The current inheritance tax threshold is £325,000 per individual. Any value in your estate above that amount could be taxed at 40%, although there are other allowances that can be applied. It is worth noting that assets or sums of money passing to your spouse or to a charity are, at the moment, exempt from inheritance tax. If you are married and you and your wife or husband set up wills that leave everything to each other, your children could inherit an estate of £650,000 without incurring tax. Because assets left to spouses are exempt from the tax regime, the allowances that go unused on the first death can be applied on the second death. Even if part of the exemption was employed when the first spouse died, the remainder can still be claimed.

In April last year, an additional tax allowance was introduced that relates to your main residence. As long as you leave your home to direct descendants (children, step children or grandchildren), then an additional £125,000 can be claimed tax free. This amount will increase to £150,000 in April next year and £175,000 12 months later. Again, if your spouse dies before you and his or her exemption is not used, for example, because all assets pass to you, then the executors of your will may add his or her residence nil rate band to your own. When you speak to a solicitor about making a will, we’ll talk through your specific circumstances and discuss the options available to minimise the amount of inheritance tax payable on your death. Because governments have a habit of changing tax legislation, it is important to review your will every five years or so, to ensure it is still structured in the most effective way. When the time comes, we can also help make the appropriate applications for allowances on behalf of your estate, taking away some of the administrative burden on grieving relatives. Jasper Rees sat down with Cyndi Lauper to find out more... “There’s no book on How to Be Famous for Dummies,” says Cyndi Lauper, who at 65 has not lost her New York drawl. “So you just do what you can. All of a sudden you get to the top of the mountain and everybody around is like, ‘You can’t do that! Don’t do this! You’ll be ruined!’” Above all, the Eighties punkiest pop queen who was catapulted to stardom with “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and “Time After Time”, was warned off musical theatre. “I was always being beckoned, ‘Come this way,’” she remembers. “And I was like, ‘I can’t, because if I do my career is over.’ I would lose my credibility in pop. It was really a big divide. After a while you get to a point where you’re, ‘Well, I think I’ve been ruined enough, it doesn’t matter now, I can do whatever the hell I want.’” The result is Kinky Boots, the musical mega-hit that conquered Broadway and the West End and is now on a UK & Ireland tour. The songs were written by Lauper, and in New York they won her a Tony Award for best original composition. In 2016 the show went on to

win three Olivier Awards - for Best New Musical, Best Costume Design and Best Actor in a Musical – as well as the London Evening Standard BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical and three WhatsOnStage Awards (Best New Musical, Best Actor in a Musical and Best Choreography). She had never written for theatre before, and became the first woman ever to win the Tony in the best score category on her own. “What I was really taken with was that community accepted me,” she says five years later. “To have these people, that are a literally in my own backyard on Broadway, take you in was what kinda got me.” Aptly enough, acceptance is the take-home message of Kinky Boots. “Accepting yourself, you’ll accept others,” says Lauper. “It’s a very important show at this time in the world.” The show is loosely inspired by the story of an old family firm of Northampton shoe manufacturers that was about to go under only to discover a new niche in the market: ladies’ footwear worn by men who like to dress up. The BBC told the story of the firm’s rebirth in the series Trouble at the Top. In 2005 that eventually became a charming independent British movie which starred Chiwetel Ejiofor as Lola, a fictional cross-dressing diva demanding sturdy stilettos. But the ultimate destiny for such a fabulous story was always the stage. Kinky Boots the Musical, which explored the unlikely friendship between Lola and straight-laced factory owner Charlie, opened in Chicago in 2012, moved to Broadway the following year, and made its way to the West End in 2015. It’s also gone all around the world to territories including Canada, Australia, Germany and Japan. But now it’s come home: the tour opened at the Royal & Derngate in

Northampton, the quiet town in Middle England where it began. “I would have liked to have been there, because I just think that part of it is special,” says Lauper. But she counsels against thinking of Kinky Boots as a specifically English show. “It’s a story about a really great friendship and two very very opposite people and there’s a great redemption in the end. I’m a sucker for redemption.” Perhaps there has been some redemption for Lauper too. She was a huge star in the Eighties but, as happened to all her contemporaries bar Madonna, gradually slipped from the top of the chart. She was thinking of creating a musical about her upbringing in Queens when she got a call from her friend Harvey Fierstein. Fierstein is theatre royalty, the writer of the hit play Torch Song Trilogy about a gay drag performer and the cross-dressing star of the musical Hairspray. “He said, ‘I’m doing a show called Kinky Boots. Would you like to write the music for me?’ I thought, wow. He told me I had to watch the film. I loved it. I thought, oh I get it. He wants me to write 12 good pop songs with a good hook. I figured, I could do that. Then I realised, oh, you have to move the story along.”

She thought of the shoe factory workers as Monty Python’s knights of the round table. “The History of Wrong Guys”, a comic scene-stealer about a woman who has bad luck with men, was inspired by a line from Kung Fu Panda. “I gave everybody a different style because everybody has a different jam when they’re in the shower singing.”

She set about composing anywhere and everywhere. “I brought my phone along with me and I recorded melodies on it. I belonged to a gym where they had a track on an upstairs roof and I would walk and sing and write. When I woke up in the middle of the night I picked up my iPhone.”

She didn’t really think about for writing for specifically English characters. “When England started doing pop music it sounded like American music. Their translation of Duane Eddy and the Everly Brothers and Chuck Berry was the Mersey Beat. It was different but still based on rhythm and blues. It wasn’t like Harvey asked me to write some foreign stuff. You’re not going to ask me to write an

What she did study as a child was her mother’s record collection, which was full of musicals such as My Fair Lady, another study of the English written by Americans. “I did what kids do: I would play each character. I sang Stanley Holloway’s part, Rex Harrison’s part and Julie Andrews’ part.” At the Tony Awards in 2013, Kinky Boots was up against Matilda the Musical, with words by Tim Minchin, which was considered the favourite to win. “I was constantly asking Harvey if it was a hit and he was saying, ‘I don’t know yet, Cyn. We have to win best musical.’ So when it won best musical I said, ‘Is it a hit now?’” See it and judge for yourself. You’ll never think about shoes in the same way again.

'Be More Nulty' Runners Raise Over £15k For Charity Sarah Nulty’s family, friends and colleagues have raised over £15k for Weston Park Cancer Charity and Cavendish Cancer Care by running the Sheffield Half Marathon. This latest fund-raiser brings the total to nearly £45k raised for the two charities by Tramlines and Sarah’s friends and family. On Sunday 14th April, Sheffield hosted the annual Half Marathon. Amongst the thousands of runners taking part were, ‘The most unlikely marathon team ever’ (a collection of mostly non-runners from Sheffield’s music industry) and members of Sarah Nulty’s family who were raising money for Weston Park Cancer Charity and Cavendish Cancer Care. The runners far surpassed their goal of £10k and including gift aid donations, they have raised over a staggering £15k. The fund raising has not stopped, donations can still be made via the My Donate page. Sarah Nulty was director at Tramlines Festival from 2013 – 2018, and sadly passed away at the age of 36 just weeks before she saw her hard work become a reality in the festival’s 10th anniversary event. Sarah was instrumental in the launch of Tramlines in 2009, coordinating venues and handling bookings and later working in the commercial department. Tenacious, innovative and thoroughly unbreakable, Sarah led Tramlines through its toughest and most pivotal times.

Sarah’s family and friends felt moved to raise money for these two charities in recognition of the work they did for Sarah and in the hope that they may provide for cancer sufferers in the future. Donations were also generated for Weston Park Cancer Charity and Cavendish Cancer Care during the festival last year. The combined total raised is now nearly £45k. Sarah’s friend and colleague, Tim Walker, commented: ‘We made it and everyone should feel so proud of this achievement. This run was about bringing people together. It’s testimony to lasting positive effect that Sarah had on the people who she was connected to. We hope we can continue to be inspired by Sarah in the future and continue to do good work in her name. teamlifeandstyle

Speaking of their support Community Fundraiser at Weston Park Cancer Charity, Jade Hearsum commented; ‘We are incredibly grateful to everyone who joined the #BeMoreNulty Tramlines team for the Sheffield Half Marathon on Sunday. The route is a particularly challenging one and even though some of the team wouldn’t describe themselves as runners, they all did amazingly well and crossed the finish line with pride. With every step, they’ve raised thousands of pounds to support local cancer patients and their continued support in memory of Sarah is truly inspirational. With their help, we can ensure that cancer patients across the region continue to access the very best cancer care services.’

Since Sarah Nulty’s passing last year, she has been bestowed with many posthumous awards and memorials. This includes an ‘Outstanding Contribution Award’ from both AIF (Association of Independent Festivals) and the UK Festival Awards, who also created the ‘Sarah Nulty Women in Festivals Award’. Sheffield City Council paid homage with a memorial plaque at Devonshire Green in Sheffield City Centre, and a Civic Award from the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Magid Magid. On 7th March 2019, The Star (Sheffield based publication) launched their ‘Women of Sheffield’ awards. They created the ‘Sarah Nulty award for Creativity’ in respect to her dedication to the music industry of Sheffield. The first winner of this award was Vicky Morris who was presented the award by Sarah’s mum, Julie Voisey. Tramlines Festival will continue its commitment to supporting local charities and causes during the 2019 event.
