There’s a new face around Cypress Tree Golf Course now. Ben Williams joined the team as the new course superintendent in September. The superintendent’s job is critical to the operation of the golf course, and Ben recognizes the impact he can have to improve the playing conditions immediately. Cypress Tree Golf Course is an 18-hole course that was built in the early 1960s. The greens were improved in 2007 and are in good shape according to Ben, although he has some ideas for making the putting surfaces smoother. “My goal is to work with the crew to teach them proper procedures for caring for the golf course. I want to share what I’ve learned from past experiences at previous courses,” he said.

Ben oversees a crew of seven men who work daily to keep the soil and grass in good shape with proper mowing and application of fertilizer and chemicals. He and his staff also maintain the grounds surrounding the course and manage the irrigation system. “We are so happy to have Ben on our team,” Ricky Magers, Director of Golf Operations, said. “He has hit the ground running. He is preparing the course for the winter season which takes lots of planning and execution.” Ben is from Alexander City, Alabama, and he got his start working at a course not far from the Maxwell AFB Lake Martin Recreation Area as a kid. He attended Auburn University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in agronomy. He has worked as a superintendent at golf courses in Scottsdale, Arizona, Fairhope, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida. He most recently was the Municipal Parks Superintendent for the City of Alabaster. He admits he belongs on a golf course, and is proud to be a part of Air Force Golf. He said what he likes best about the Cypress Tree Golf Course is the variety it offers the golfers. “The layout of the course is awesome, and the design is beautiful,” Ben said. “This course is playable for golfers of any skill level. This is the kind of course that you can use every club in your bag, which makes it fun.”

Ben is married to his wife Ashley and they have two children, Mattie, age 7, and Sanders, age 3. They recently moved to Pike Road and are excited to be part of Maxwell AFB. His parents live nearby at Lake Martin, and they enjoy the military retirement benefits on base when they can. Welcome to the Maxwell AFB family, Ben!

WORKFORCE REINTEGRATION Many Airmen have been teleworking for months. As the Maxwell Gunter community progresses toward pandemic recovery, Airmen may return to work centers that have changed to include different rules, policies, processes, and even coworkers. The staff at the Airman and Family Readiness Center (A&FRC) has partnered with Military Family Life Counselors (MFLC), the Employment Assistance Program (EAP) and the Civilian Personnel Office (CPO) to offer assistance to units through one-on-one counseling and/or group trainings. Contact the A&FRC at (334) 953-2353 or (334) 953-9694 for information.

HELPFUL HINTS FOR RETURNING FROM TELEWORK Before your return-to-work date, adjust your telework routine to closely resemble what your office routine will be. Factor-in travel time, traffic and weather conditions. Bring some comforts of home to your office, like your favorite mug or photos. Don’t forget your own water bottles and drinks from home if water fountains and office coffee pots are not available. Know the requirements for masks and distancing in your work areas. Be patient as others are also making the same transition.

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A The Rowswell family enjoys many benefits of being a military family, including living in different states and overseas, and the opportunity to make friends all over the world. TSgt Ian Rowswell works at the Community College of the Air Force at Gunter Annex and lives on base at Maxwell AFB with his partner Meghan and daughter Beatrice. They arrived in Alabama last February, just before the COVID-19 pandemic impacted everyone’s life. They were stationed in Wyoming before that, and overseas at Misawa AFB in Japan from 2011-2014. Meghan and Ian’s extended families are from New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, and it’s not often that they get to spend time together. Meghan admits, though, that the times they are together are much more special. One of the best things about being a military family is the opportunity to make friends everywhere they go, according to Meghan. Those friends are especially important during the holidays when the Rowswells are not able to be with their parents, siblings, nieces, and nephews. “We’ve had a lot of ‘Friends-givings’ with people from Ian’s squadron and people we know that are also away from their family on Thanksgiving,” Meghan said. Technology has also made it easier for the Rowswells to see and visit with far-away family and friends. “We have a lot of virtual celebrations with our families,” Ian said.

Ian, Meghan and Beatrice Rowswell

From joining special events through an online platform, or playing online games with friends across the world, it’s important to both of them to stay in touch. That’s

10 | November 2020

especially true now because of COVID-19

During the Holidays

and the requirements to socially distance from others, Meghan added. Maintaining family holiday traditions can

be challenging for military families, but the Rowswells work hard to participate even if they can’t be there in person. Meghan created a special tablecloth to use at Thanksgiving every year, no matter who in the family is hosting the celebration. Everyone attending signs their name on the tablecloth, and then Meghan embroiders their signature onto the tablecloth permanently. The tablecloth is sent to the person hosting the next Thanksgiving and everyone can see the signatures from years before. “It’s been fun to see how the children’s signatures have changed over the years,” Meghan said. Beatrice, 8, has some favorite things about being in a military family, too, Meghan and Ian shared. “Bea loves to go on long car trips when we do travel because we get to have fast food and play video games in the car,” they said. “Spending time with cousins is also a favorite reason to go on road trips for Bea.” The Rowswells have made the most of being a military family during Thanksgiving, and encourage others to enjoy the holiday where they are and with those nearby, if they can’t be with family.
