Citrus Fair is Growing: Back to the Farm II The La Habra Area Chamber of Commerce held its first Spring Citrus Fair in 2010 to provide local entertainment and education about the history of La Habra, as well as to raise money for local non-profits. The Fair normally attracts 30,000 to 40,000 attendees over the weekend. This year’s attendance is expected to grow with the exciting expansion of the Fair to include Sonora High School’s La Habra Valley Community Fair and the North Orange County Gem & Mineral Society’s annual Jubilee of Gems show. Sonora High School’s Agriculture Department created the La Habra Valley Community Fair to showcase the Sonora and La Habra High School livestock, horticulture and art programs. “The reason for the move to the Citrus Fair is to reach a larger audience and focus on important agriculture education programs. Our students are responsible for their Cailey Duncan and her goat na med Poker (Cre dit: Photograph animals — purchasing, raising and competing for top honors y by Kelly H. Wi lliamson) during the Citrus Fair. Winners will go on to compete at the Orange County Fair agriculture competition during the summer,” continued on page 6 >>>

Museum Upgrades Timely Water-wise Exhibit The Children’s Museum at La Habra recently completed Phase I of the renovation of its ClubHouse H2O exhibit, which features a charming mini-house with a kitchen and bathroom that demonstrates water usage and conservation. Previously, this exhibit used actual water to show its usage during showering and flushing, but the new version of the exhibit, installed by Utopia Entertainment and based on a design by Museum Curator Lisa Reckon, utilizes interactive lights and sound. By pressing big red buttons, a child can initiate a sequence of bright blue lights that simulate falling water in the shower and hear the sound of water splashing. Blue lights also swirl in the cut-away toilet, showing exactly how water is used each time it’s flushed. The bathroom sink runs with sequential blue light as well, and cute voices remind children to shut off the water if it’s left running too long. The over-all look of the clubhouse has also received a facelift, with a new color scheme and trim. Phase II will launch soon, as the Clear Water Mountain exhibit is retired, and the space converted into ClubHouse H2O’s Conservation Garden, where kids can plant and harvest vegetables and flowers from the garden and oranges from the mini-orchard. This area will also showcase drought-resistant plants to use in gardens at home. Water conserving irrigation ideas will be

presented, as well as composting methods. This highly interactive garden will be a fun place to learn about coping well with California’s desert climate and the wise usage of our precious water resources — something we all can appreciate!

Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work in La Habra’s neighborhoods. The majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies or emotional situations. Those situations are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction. “We hope that community members will feel comfortable to ask questions, bring concerns, or simply get to know our officers,” said Police Chief Jerry Price. “These interactions are the foundation of community partnerships.” All community members are welcome and invited to attend. Coffee with a Cop is usually held once a month, on the second Saturday of the month, from 8:00 am-10:00 am. The coffee shop location changes from month to month. Please contact Lt. Mel Ruiz to learn more about the program and the upcoming dates and locations of the event. Lt. Ruiz can be reached at 562-383-4300 or by emailing him at MRuiz@ lahabraca.gov. Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are held across the county, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve. The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members one cup of coffee at a time.

SUPPORT YOUR HOST TOWN! WHAT IS SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES? The 2015 World Games will be the largest event hosted by Los Angeles since the 1984 Olympic Games. The venues will be world-class, including Special Olympics Athlete Villages at USC and UCLA, and a star-studded Opening Ceremony on July 25, 2015 at the Los Angles Memorial Coliseum. Arriving from all corners of the world, 7,000 athletes competing in 25 sporting events, will take the global stage in Los Angeles and show the world incredible courage, unwavering determination, and sheer joy. By living out their dreams in front of the world, they will open hearts and minds, and expand our collective sense of acceptance and inclusion.

WHAT IS THE HOST TOWN PROGRAM? The Host Town Program is a very special three-day program that takes place prior to the Opening Ceremony of the 2015 Special Olympics World Games. At their Host Towns, athletic delegations from around the world will be welcomed and celebrated. The Host Town’s schedule of events will include getting to know the community members, taking part in cultural activities unique to their area, and—of course—practicing and resting for the games. The Special Olympics athletes will feel truly celebrated and Host Town members will make friends for life.

WHEN ARE THE HOST TOWNS? Delegations arrive at the Host Towns on July 21 and will depart on July 24, 2015

LA HABRA, A HOST TOWN! On November 3, 2014, it was announced that we’ve become an official Host Town of the World Games. We are proud to take part in the largest humanitarian and athletic event Los Angeles has seen since the 1984 Olympics. We look forward to hosting an international delegation for three days in our community. The bond created between the athletes and our community members will be life changing and it will promote acceptance and inclusion of intellectual disabilities throughout our community.

HOW CAN YOU HELP SUPPORT THE HOST TOWN? Donations can be made at http://www.la2015.org/host-town/list/ (click on "La Habra ” to make your donation) or by checks payable to “LA2015” and not directly to La Habra. Please send it to Laura Leventhal, 2015 Special Olympics World Games, 633 W. 5th Street, Suite 2000, Los Angeles, CA 90071, USA. Help us in making La Habra an amazing Host Town experience for the athletes! It takes $100 to host one athlete during one day of in our town (including lodging and food) or $300 for all three days. Your generous support will unite our community in welcoming our international delegates. The world is coming, are you?

No.1

The increasing cost of healthcare has been small business owners’ No. 1 problem since 1986.

The Affordable Care Act has increased the cost and complications of having and providing health insurance. Particular items of concern include:

The employer mandate

30-hour workweek designation for full-time employees

Individual mandate

Small business health insurance tax

TAX REFORM Small business owners shoulder a heavy tax burden.

1.7 billion to 1.8 billion Hours small businesses spend on tax compliance annually

$18 billion to $19 billion

Amount small businesses spend on compliance costs annually Key reforms that would provide much-needed relief for business owners include:

• Lowering tax rates • Simplifying the tax code

BURDENSOME REGULATIONS Overreach at all levels continues to be a major concern because of the compliance burdens and increased costs caused by unnecessary regulations.

3,348

Federal regulations in the pipeline, with nearly 1/3 impacting small businesses directly

Small business owners are looking for Congress to: Make regulatory agencies—like the National Labor Relations Board and the Environmental Protection Agency—accountable for their rulings. Institute requirements that these agencies show publicly the economic impact rules have on small business.

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK Recovery from the recession has been sluggish nationwide, which cripples small business owners’ ability to make bold movements toward growing their businesses.

The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index rose 2 points in December 2014.

There’s potential for more political certainty in 2015 with more business-friendly legislators winning their midterm election races.

Instructor Profiles USA DANCE STUDIO Hip Hop for Hip Kids, Tiny Tots Ballet/Tot Combo & Ballet Folklorico USA Dance Studio was opened by the Muniz family in 2007, but the family’s passion for dance started much earlier`. Owner Anselma Muniz studied ballet folklorico at the University of Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico. Years later, she was determined that her daughters, too, would learn to dance folklorico. When she was unable to find a local studio that taught folklorico, she enrolled her daughter Lilia in classical ballet, tap and jazz classes. Eventually, they learned that Celia de la Torre was teaching folklorico classes at the La Habra Community Center. Although Lilia was at first unenthused about taking a class, “because it was too Mexican”, she says, laughing, her mother insisted that she attend, and Lilia immediately decided that this was what she wanted to do with her life. Because of her prior dance training, she advanced quickly and performed with various dance companies, ending with Grandeza Mexicana, where she remains. At 19, Lilia began teaching folklorico classes at our Community Center. She began with a single class of beginners of all ages, and Anselma made the practice skirts and costumes that the students wore. They eventually had enough students to open their own studio, where Lilia and sister Nancy teach folklorico. Other classes are taught by college students majoring in dance. The studio holds two recitals each year, and Lilia, Nancy and their students perform at local events whenever possible. USA Dance Studio is located at 401 W. Whittier Blvd. Please visit or contact the Community Center to register for classes and see pg. 22 for a complete list of the classes USA offers through the Community Center.

MICHELLE FLORES Mommy Stroller Fitness Michelle Flores grew up in nearby Fullerton and graduated from Sunny Hills High School. She married at a young age and became a stay-at-home mom with three daughters, one son and a step-daughter. “What drove me to fitness when I was a younger mom at home with all my children was that it was difficult to stay in shape at home by myself. I also went through some post-partum depression,” she says. Luckily, she found a free stroller fitness class and saw first-hand that exercise was very helpful in combatting the depression. In addition, “just being with other moms to see that they were going through the same things I was going through was really positive. Being a mom is such a huge responsibility, you wonder if you’re doing it right.” Eventually, the group decided to have its members share leadership. When Michelle’s turn came, the other mothers in the group encouraged her to pursue leadership opportunities. “It was a great fit for a mother, because I could take my children with me, and now that they are in school, I can teach classes during that time frame,” she says. She received her Personal Trainer certification in 2012 and a year later, her Group Fitness certification, both through the American Council on Exercise. She is currently finishing up her degree in kinesiology. Her favorite thing about teaching Mommy Stroller Fitness is being inspired by how hard the mothers in her class push themselves to achieve better health and fitness. Mommy Stroller Fitness meets on Wednesday, 9:45-11:00 am at Penn Park in Whittier. Please see pg. 38 for more information about the class.
