FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK

BE inthe flow!

Dear Reader,

H

appy New Year! Wow, we made it! You made it. That’s so inspiring within itself because that means you have another day. There is still time for you to pursue your purpose; whether that is launching that business, joining that ministry, or writing that book, whatever it is, now is the time to do it. Do it! You may be that mother that put dreams on hold for your children; or a child that had to take care of a parent; you may even be someone who has dedicated your whole life to the wellbeing of someone else and missed the time where you feel you could have done something more with your life. Well, what a wonderful thing it is to still be here, able to live our best lives in the overflow! So much has been happening since our last issue. So, I must tell you, this issue almost didn’t want to happen. I didn’t want to publish Life in the Overflow anymore. I can’t express enough how our mental health is vital to sound living. Sometimes you just have to stop everything else and focus on you. You may have to take a break and redefine your very life, rediscover who you are and what you want to do. Sometimes you have to recalibrate yourself with your purpose. Having a servants heart has its rewards. Serving others can be so gratifying, and can be one of the most rewarding occupations that you can have; but while you are serving others, don’t forget to serve yourself. Don’t forget about YOU. Servants have dreams too. Don’t put your own ambitions on the backburner while making someone else’s dreams come true. Serve well, but serve your own dreams. Be sure to check our my Editor’s Pick in our Beauty section! Take a look a see what natural products I recommend and use on my natural hair!

Remember Joseph had a dream about his future and was a prisoner soon after that dream. Sometimes your dream will push you into an isolated place where time with God is not an option, it’s essential. Eventually it was servantry that got Joseph out of prison. In 2019, it’s time to serve your dreams, your goals, and put to action those things you are ambitious about. Put your drive in full throttle and pursue, overtake, and recover everything that has been lost for yourself during your time of serving others. This is a real thing and there is nothing wrong with desiring more for yourself while serving your clients, parents, friends, family, co-workers, church family and more! It doesn’t matter if you block out an hour of your time every day this year that allows you to do something towards your own vision. In this issue, we tap into Black Excellence and learn about Tyler Lepley and his new TV One original film, get a sneak peek of the Urban One Music Honors, chat with Author Corinthus Alston about his new book, “The Gift of Grace: God’s Unmerited Favor” in our Author Spotlight, we also learn about Mr. Del and his “Black” album and more!

GOSPEL MUSIC NEWS

QUEEN NAIJA & JOHN P. KEE “KARMA”

I

f you haven’t heard the news yet, there is an alleged feud going on between the Legendary gospel artist and songwriter, Pastor John P. Kee and R&B newcomer, 22 year-old Queen Naija. Back in June 2018, she was accused of stealing one of John P. Kee’s famous melody’s. As if things could not get any worse, just a few weeks ago Queen Naija calls Pastor John a “fake” Christian because of the accusations. There could be a pending lawsuit between Pastor John P. Kee and YouTube star turned R&B singer. Pastor John P. Kee alleges that Queen Naija used his famous melody from his song ‘You Don’t Know My Story’ (Life and Favor 2012) in her her hit song ‘Karma’. Well, this has caused an uproar and downright war between the two, which also also cause R&B singer Lil Mo’ to get involved with some choice words about Queen Naija. Apparently, Lil Mo’ is the niece of Pastor John P. Kee, who went on to state his position and thoughts about the business process, while congratulating Queen Naija on her success. Many social media followers felt that Pastor Kee was being shady, saying that he should not sue her at all, since she is successful in his eyes. The key thing that Pastor John P. Kee noted was that he and Queen Naija are under the same record label. He also said that someone should talk to their producers. He wrote in a comment, “ I’m a businessman. I’ve been a publisher for over 35 years. This is bigger than her. Staff. producers, management, agents, etc. should have handled this properly out the gate!” Queen Naija sticks to her story that as she was writing ‘Karma’, she had the gospel song nowhere in mind. “Y’all act like people can’t think of the same melodies, and trust me. That melody ain’t nothing crazy. People will take anything and run with it.”

300 lb Weight Gain: Spiraling Mental Health BLACK HEALTH

CCS Media Founder Treva Gordon is working with client Marla McCants to promote her 2019 Tell All Weight Loss Tour. Marla McCants is a Detroit native and was first seen back in 2015 on the season finale of My 600-lb Life. Having found herself in an abusive relationship, Marla was kidnapped and held hostage by her ex-boyfriend — which is when her weight spiraled out of control to nearly 800 pounds. At the time, doctors believed she was only months, if not weeks away from dying. During her episode, she said, “My weight has condemned me to this bed.” Yet despite gastric bypass surgery and an extended hospital stay, she refused to let doctors help her stand. It wasn’t until the mother-of-three realized this was her last chance to live that she eventually gave in. The mother revealed that she never had issues with weight when she was younger but that her eating became out of control after she tried to break up with her boyfriend, who then “lost it” and kidnapped her. He held Marla at gunpoint and shot two officers who tried to rescue her before she ultimately escaped. After the traumatizing incident, the reality star refused to leave her house because she was terrified he would find her and kill her. By the time they caught her ex, however, she had been coping with her feelings by eating — and ballooned to more than 700 pounds. “The kidnapping changed my life forever, and I wish I could take that day back,” she said. At the end of her episode, Marla weighed 534 pounds — a 266-pound loss. She said, “I’m so proud of myself. I got myself into [this situation]; I can get myself out.” That positivity is what helped her drop even more weight after cameras stopped rolling. Marla is currently writing a tell-all book about the show and says, “The show lied and it is not what its cracked up to be.” HER STORY: Click on the link below for her REAL STORY on THE REEL RENEE CHANNEL on YouTube. Life in the Overflow Magazine got the opportunity to talk with Christian author, Corinthus Altson about his new book, The Gift of Grace. The Gift of Grace is the frist book that is part of a 3 book series. Tell us about your writing journey and how you got started? Actually I started writing by accident. I am a minister, so I pulled out an old sermon that I did a couple of years ago and I said there is actually a book in this. I just started writing and it just began to flow. What inspires you to write? I call it my evangelism. People just want to talk to you. They want God’s word, but they want it to be relatable to where they are in their life. Men can be evangelists too. You don’t have to preach fire and brimstone, you can evangelize them.

The Roucou seed has valuable ingredients and health benefits. Can be used on hair and skin. After applying the OI ALL IN ONE MILK try Livingproof Perfect Hair Days for air dried styling. Recommened to use on flat, two-strand twist, or braid out styles.

What is the book about? What do you hope the reader experiences through the book’s message? I want them to leave with knowing that with God’s, grace can’t earn it, you can’t buy it, it’s a gift. We can’t earn God’s grace, it was a gift. You have a choice to accept it or not. God gives us free will. Also, 3 key points; God accepts you as who you are, He doesn’t want you to stay that way, and He wants you to give grace unto others as he gives grace unto you.
