PRESIDENTS WELCOME Goodbye Winter, hello Spring!! I know that most of you can’t wait to see the end of winter and all the bugs that it brings. After a cold and wet winter, we are all definitely looking forward to seeing the sun shine and the flowers bloom. In this issue of our newsletter the focus is on Dads. Fathers play an important role in a family and they are often forgotten as mothers and baby tend to get most of the attention. However this is a tough time for them also as they not only have to deal with the emotional roller coaster ride of this journey but also often have to look after the rest of family whilst continuing to go to work. We hope that the stories and tips from other dads will help other fathers going through this difficult time. Besides the focus on fathers we also have information on our exciting upcoming events of the year. Firstly, we have our official launch of Life’s Little Treasures in Tasmania by Health Minister Michelle O’Byrne and the Hon Attorney General Brian Whightman at our Masquerade Ball on 22nd October. This will be a great night of food, drinks and laughter with lots of entertainment planned for the night including special performances by two very talented burlesque dancers… So don your mask and gowns and join us for what will be night of fun and frivolity! You can buy your tickets now by visiting www.lifeslittletreasures.org.au/events-and-supportgroups/events/current-event/tassie-ball/. See you there! Soon after our Tassie launch we have our major fundraising event of the year – “Walk for Prems” Charity Fun Run / Walk on Sunday 6th November. This year it’s going national so that families, friends, work mates in WA, Tasmania, SA, NSW as well as VIC can also celebrate and enjoy this special day. In Melbourne, comedian and radio DJ extraordinaire Matt Tilley will be MC’ing the day which is guaranteed to be a fun day out for the whole family and our beautiful ambassador singer /songwriter Clare Bowditch will be walking with us. If you want to be part of this day, register NOW so that you don’t miss out on our free T-shirt for adults and cool bandana for the kids. This year we also have another special community event that we have been given the opportunity of being part of. PROUD PREMMIE JOURNEY
PREMATURITY HAS BEEN MY GREATEST TEACHER
f
ather’s Day marked a significant day for me personally. It was a time of reflection and acknowledgment of where I am today surrounded by my twin toddlers (ex 24 weeks) each of whom provide me with so much joy in my life.
...parenthood is an absolute privilege and not even hospital walls should stop us feeling like a parent especially on father’s day.
Today was about celebration, it was about being a DAD! Two years ago, when my wife was confined to complete bed rest after going into labour at 22 weeks, becoming a father was becoming a major threat as we battled the odds to keep the twins in utero one more day, but little did I know just how different my role as a father would be, as I recall the twins arriving 16 weeks prematurely and being whisked away to NICU. That feeling of helplessness. That overwhelming feeling to protect and to provide for them and to innately desire the best outcome for them and to be strong for my partner who at the time didn’t understand the complexity of the road ahead as she recovered post surgery. But most of all that feeling that there was nothing at the time I could do and that I had no control over the situation or outcome. This wasn’t how it was supposed to be, I had planned for months the pending arrival of our bundles of joy, the celebratory drinks, the decorating of the nursery, all of which fell by the wayside in a matter of seconds. To have these feelings is human and natural; however as a father there may never be a time in a father’s life where a dignified, steadfast and calm reaction will serve you, your children and your partner in the best possible way. At this point in my life prematurity has been my greatest teacher. I think the desire a father has to protect his
children is one of the biggest emotions going through hospital. The exact effects of kangaroo care, talking to your baby, and just being near to them has not been quantified. But, personally I don’t think you can under estimate the effects of this positive energy and the opportunity it allows for you to bond with your baby. I made it my mission to understand everything about the machines, the numbers, the medical terminology and to be involved in as much as I could in the day to day care of our babies. It allowed me to feel a sense of control, but most importantly, it made me feel like a father! In going through a premature experience something very important cannot be forgotten. Your partnership created your children and one of the best gifts you can give them is a healthy relationship. For relationships navigating prematurity it is so important to be united together and allow each other to have personal emotional reactions and to nurture, love and guide each other. As a man I know this can be more difficult for us, prematurity is not a situation that is easily problem solved. After all the ups and down of our prematurity journey I believe that parenthood is an absolute privilege and not even hospital walls should stop us feeling like a parent especially on father’s day.

TIPS FOR DAD’S Whether it is Papa, Baba, Babbo, Tata or Dad... for all our French, Turkish, Italian, Polish or Aussies the meaning of Daddy is synonymous with love, care and devotion. During the pregnancy and immediate post birth, society tends to focus on the baby and mum often overlooking about the other significant part of the formula! The Dad! They are just as important to a baby’s growth and development as the mum, with a just as crucial role to play in your child’s life – regardless of what stage they’re at. Here are a few things to remember during the continual journey that is fatherhood; Confidence. Believe in yourself and trust yourself that your love is the best thing you can give your child. It is a learning journey for any new parents; mum’s included and continues everyday! Embark on this journey together to get to know your baby. It will only be through a trial an error that you will learn what your baby likes best. This process is much easier when both primary carers work together and learn off each other. One parent does not always contain all the answers all the time Kangaroo Cuddles. Time is usually in short supply for most of us, but making what time you have available count is what’s important. So whether you’re in NICU, SCN doing kangaroo cuddles or even at home, take the time to have that skin on skin contact or special cuddle time. This will help strengthen the bond between father and baby. Whilst science may not have caught up with the proven benefits, we believe the facts speak for themselves!! Dedicated Time. Regardless of if you’re still in the hospital phase or if you’ve graduated to the homecoming, dedicated dad time is paramount. When you think about it, the activities between hospital and home are loosely the same, whether it is special cuddly time, reading time, singing, or playtime it’s all important. Sure the playtime adapts as they develop from
touching an arm through the humidity crib, lying under the play gym, having crawling races, swings, slides, through to tearing around the park and play centre, having the 1:1 time will further strengthen your bond – especially if your partner is the main carer. Understanding. Whether you read the charts, speak with the Neonatologists, Paediatricians, nursers, or both, it is crucial to have an understanding of your baby’s needs. Ask as many questions as you need they are there to help you! While both parents hear the same message, each will take a slightly different interpretation as well as remembering different points. Therefore once you have digested the message you can then agree on the best steps forward. Accept help. Superman is not human!! No one person can do everything. If you are lucky enough to have a support network around you, accept their offer of help or ask. This can include, minding your other little treasures whilst you visit the hospital, cooking a meal, cleaning the house, mowing the lawns, basically any help that will enable you to spend more time with your family. Help also involves emotional help. That can be from other dad’s in the NICU/SCN who are going through a similar situation, outside family and friends as well as your fellow LLT members. Teamwork. Unfortunately there are no instructions manuals with your baby. Whilst in the beginning the medical staff know what’s best for your babies, parents remain the corner stone of the team. No one person – whether that is the mother, father, grandparents have all the answers. Working together, talking, sharing, listening but most importantly learning your baby is all part of the journey!! As we all know, what works one day or week does not necessarily work the following day or week!

PROUD PREMMIE JOURNEY
BEING A PREMMIE DAD IS A PRIVILEGE
i
’ve been given this chance to share with you my experience as a father of Premie’s. Humbly I accept this honour knowing that so many other Dads have a story that is worthy to be told. As a premie parent I wear my children’s medical history as a badge of honour to their fortitude, courage and strength to survive, “surely they must be a chip off the old block”. I’ve learnt a lot of medical terms along the way, and I use this new found (but limited) knowledge to qualify myself amongst the medical professionals. You guessed it, I’m one of those Dads that turn up at the hospital with a well-rehearsed medical history, I attach the oximetry monitor, I check the sats, I read the patient notes and more than once I have been mistaken for a doctor. My twins Aurelia and Indiana are two years old in November. In case you don’t know their story, let me quickly share their history. Twenty five weekers, chronic lung disease, surgical closure of PDA, self-closing ASD, hospitalisation for Influenza A and Bronchiolitis… …a completely normal “premie” start to life. Twins have a club of their own. Apparently membership is granted automatically. Members have introduced themselves to me in all manner of places “Are they twins? I have twins, they’re older now…” and here starts the conversation. It’s one of those things you have to experience to understand, just like having a premie. There is something special about our premie membership though. We may not be as obvious as twin parents, but for me its deeper appreciation of what we have experienced, what we have survived and what we have gained.
Indy is our smaller twin, she has an iron will a never say never attitude and an iron man tolerance to pain. Just before Easter 2011 I stood in the emergency department of our local hospital, and along with three nurses we did our best to hold a fighting sub 8kg Indiana still while the doctor inserted a nasal CPAP tube down her nose. Saturation levels below 90% did little to hinder Indy’s fighting spirit. I know you know that feeling of your baby loaded into the acute care ambulance with the PETS team and transferred to the dreaded (P)ICU. I bet you’ve also been through the bed discussion…“no beds at RCH, we’re trying Monash now”…and your just praying that you don’t end up interstate. These are the experiences that have shaped and defined me as their Dad. My wife Lil and I are very positive about our experience. Sure it has been tough. There are pressures the average father doesn’t experience. How do you manage a career? What if you run out of sick leave? If like me, you have older children, who will pick them up from school and do the after school activity taxi run? Am I dividing my time correctly? How do I balance work and hospital? How do I stay positive, be the family pillar, when everyone else is crumbling? How do I deal with the sleep deprivation without exploding over the smallest of things? As Dad’s (and Mum’s) with premie membership, these are our challenges.
These are the experiences that have shaped and defined me as their Dad.
I can’t tell you how our twins are progressing for their age, because I just don’t have that baseline measurement against other equivalent aged toddlers. This is a good thing. Indiana has just started walking at 18 months (adj), while Aurelia walked at 16 months (adj). Both girls are below the third percentile in weight, but they have quite a large vocabulary. What I can tell you though is that to me, my kids are my angels. They always smile, Aurelia calls out “Daddy, Daddy” when I arrive home form work and Indy gives the best sloppy kisses. Is it possible to be inspired by a two year old…..you bet it is! Being part of our club is inspiring and being a premie father my privilege. Written By Dad

Poem For Dad WHAT MAKES A DAD A DAD IS A PERSON WHO IS LOVING AND KIND, AND OFTEN HE KNOWS WHAT YOU HAVE ON YOUR MIND. HE’S SOMEONE WHO LISTENS, SUGGESTS, AND DEFENDS. A DAD CAN BE ONE OF YOUR VERY BEST FRIENDS! HE’S PROUD OF YOUR TRIUMPHS, BUT WHEN THINGS GO WRONG, A DAD CAN BE PATIENT AND HELPFUL AND STRONG IN ALL THAT YOU DO, A DAD’S LOVE PLAYS A PART. THERE’S ALWAYS A PLACE FOR HIM DEEP IN YOUR HEART. AND EACH YEAR THAT PASSES, YOU’RE EVEN MORE GLAD, MORE GRATEFUL AND PROUD JUST TO CALL HIM YOUR DAD! THANK YOU, DAD... FOR LISTENING AND CARING, FOR GIVING AND SHARING, BUT, ESPECIALLY, FOR JUST BEING YOU! ~AUTHOR UNKNOWN~
