Founded and funded by philanthropy. This short phrase tells a long story about Newport Hospital; our roots, our history, and our unique connection to the tight-knit community we serve and call home. You’ll read highlights of that rich story in the pages of this magazine and get a strong sense of what makes our hospital such a special place of hope and healing for so many and for so long.

Established in 1873 with private donations from caring, forward-looking individuals who had a vision to provide better medical access to residents of Aquidneck Island, Newport Hospital started out as a small, 12-room cottage. We’ve grown our footprint significantly since those humble beginnings, and we’ve expanded our capabilities exponentially.

And as we have grown, so has the unwavering support of the community of Newport County. Our loyal donor family has grown by our side throughout the 150 years. The generosity of people like you continues to have a direct and powerful impact on our ability to deliver world-class patient care right here on the island.

In this issue of Newport Hospital, we shine a spotlight on some of those donors with our 2021 Honor Roll. To them and to everyone who supports our ongoing mission of Delivering health with care, thank you.

We are grateful for and appreciative of everything you do.

If past is prologue, the people of Aquidneck Island are set for another historically long run of world-class, compassionate care at Newport Hospital—and they deserve it. Because for 150 years, neighbors, friends, and supporters like you have rallied around the place they see as the heart of their community.

Being part of Lifespan, the state’s largest academic health system, means Newport Hospital will continue collaborating with the best clinicians, researchers, and educators for years to come too, ensuring our patients have access to the very best care right here. We also remain ready to function as an economic and innovation engine for the state we all care so deeply about.

As a member of our donor community, you are a part of the Lifespan family, and your continued support makes this bright future possible. So, thank you.

5 OF OUR COMMUNITY
Aquidneck Island, Newport Hospital is preparing to celebrate its 150th anniversary. accomplishments that mark the rich history of the hospital. Here are some of the most noteworthy.

NEWPORT HOSPITAL’S ‘A SALUTE TO HEALTH’ RAISES $1 MILLION

After a two-year hiatus, Newport Hospital’s donor community came together on July 6 at Marble House mansion to support the hospital’s most crucial funding needs. Event co-chairs Holly M. Bannister, MD, Dory Hamilton Benson, Norey Dotterer Cullen, Kimberly Palmer, Isabelle Dana Ridall, Maura Smith, and Mary van Pelt designed a beautiful evening that raised $1 million in support of patient care and lifesaving programs while honoring the inspiring life work of a longtime friend and ambassador, Mr. David Gordon.

Steeped in history, Marble House was the perfect venue for Newport Hospital to kick-off its yearlong 150th anniversary celebration of caring for its community. Since its 1873 founding as a 12-bed cottage hospital, Newport Hospital has emerged as a regional healthcare leader. “Our community’s generosity founded Newport Hospital, and that continued generosity has helped to shape us into the award-winning hospital we are today, with advanced specialty services, a state-of-the-art emergency department, and an amazingly talented staff,” remarked hospital president, Crista Durand. “I look forward to all we can achieve in the next 150 years.”

Carol Bazarsky spoke of David Gordon as he was honored for all he has done for Newport Hospital and the community, “‘Inspiring’ is the word I’d use to describe the life work of David Gordon.”

Later in the evening, Jeffrey Gaines, MD, MHCM, FACEP, Chief Medical Officer, Vice President of Medical Affairs and Newport Hospital Foundation Board of Trustee, Paul Leys led a spirited fund-a-need auction where guests raised their paddles in support of the expansion of the Norman Prince Spine Institute at Newport Hospital. More than $588,000 was raised to help purchase the Ziehm Curve Navigation technology, described as the “GPS of the spine, and rapidly becoming the standard of care in spinal surgery.”

Having this technology at Newport Hospital not only raises its service to the level of The Miriam and Rhode Island hospitals, but also brings the most advanced spine care to patients across Aquidneck Island close to home. For additional event highlights and to view the video about the Ziehm technology please visit giving.lifespan.org/ Newport/summer.

TWO BAD BREAKS . . . AND THEN A LUCKY ONE

January 2022 wasn’t exactly a stellar time for the Hurd family.

First, 16-year-old Tyler sustained a knee injury coming down with a rebound during a high school basketball ball game. Then, just a week later, his dad Ben, a contractor, tripped and fell at work, fracturing his leg. Ouch and ouch!

Fortunately, after the Hurds’ two bad breaks, they caught a lucky one when it came to finding care. “I’ve coached football with Tom Rocco [medical director at Newport Hospital’s wound center] for the past 13 years,” Ben says. “So, when Ty got hurt, I asked him ‘Who should he see?’ Immediately, he recommended Dr. Budacki and I’m so glad he did.” Of course, at the time, Ben didn’t know that he’d be seeing him too.

Ross Budacki, MD, is a gifted sports medicine surgeon who practices at Newport Hospital and works for its partner, University Orthopedics, which features more than 40 board-certified, fellowship trained musculoskeletal and sports medicine physicians. Dr. Budacki treats patients with a wide variety of injuries from simple sprains and strains all the way to complex, traumatic injuries involving the shoulder, knee, hip, hand, wrist, and elbow.

“Tyler’s injury was significant, but treatable,” Dr. Budacki recalls. “He had torn his meniscus in such a way that it made more sense to remove the unstable part rather than repair it and run the risk of it not healing properly, so that’s what we did.”

After Tyler’s arthroscopic, same-day surgery—called a partial meniscectomy—he took it easy for a couple of weeks before starting physical therapy. Six weeks later, he was given the green light to resume sports activities.

In Ben’s case, he tripped down two stairs and heard a “pop, pop, pop.” That noise turned out to be a complex fracture of the fibula. “His ankle mortise was compromised, and we had to put the bone back where it anatomically needed to go to help minimize the risk of arthritis down the road,” Dr. Budacki notes.

For reference, the ankle mortise is the hinge-like, rectangular socket that connects the ends of the tibia and fibula to the talus, which is the bone at the top of the foot that holds the weight of the body when you’re standing or moving. A plate and seven screws were required to properly secure the area. Two weeks later, Ben was allowed to put weight on his ankle, and shortly thereafter he began physical therapy training to restore function and mobility.

“Dr. Budacki was awesome,” Ben says reflecting back. “He’s taken good care of us.”

BACK TO THE FUTURE

Three questions with Jeffrey Gaines, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Newport Hospital

Fundamentally, we always have—and always will— answer that question by asking another one: “What does our community need?” In the near term, that has meant increasing capabilities in our birthing center and woman’s health areas; expanding our emergency services; becoming the flagship of the Lifespan system with respect to rehabilitation; and investing in leading-edge diagnostic imaging. Moving forward, and this might seem like a paradox, our focus will include efforts intended to keep people out of Newport Hospital. Now that Coastal Medical is part of the Lifespan system, we have a greatly enhanced ability to emphasize primary care, preventive medicine, and to help folks adopt healthier lifestyles. Another component is more inward facing: workforce development. Without our people, Newport Hospital is just a big empty building. So, ensuring the culture, training, education, stability, and well-being of our doctors, nurses, and support staff will continue to be key well into the future.

Why is being part of the Lifespan system so beneficial?

Newport Hospital offers a comprehensive suite of health care services, and our staff is world-class. So, the vast majority of illnesses and injuries we see can be cared for right here. In some cases, our patients require specialized care “off island” and we can tap into the enormous resources of the Lifespan system to ensure they get what they need: immediate access to emergent cardiac interventions, advanced neurological care, and Rhode Island’s only Level 1 trauma center, being examples. We also maintain a close affiliation with The Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University.

How does community and philanthropy impact the hospital’s work?

The sense of togetherness here on the island is unique, and it’s hard going anywhere without bumping into someone you know. When people are connected like that, they look out for each other and are invested in and protective of their community’s most cherished assets—especially their hospital. Newport Hospital was founded and funded by philanthropy, and we’ve been fortunate throughout our history to have the loyal support of a wide range of donors. All gifts have a direct and meaningful impact on patient care. When you add all that generosity together, and that our donors’ interests align with the mission of the hospital, you can make magical things happen.

8
What will the care of tomorrow look like at Newport Hospital?
Dr. Jeffrey Gaines

PAYING IT FORWARD

Newport Hospital’s year-long 150th anniversary celebration pays tribute to its storied history and recognizes the exceptional care being delivered there today. But as we reflect on the past and honor the present, we also want to keep an eye on the future—to ensure we’re here to serve the people of Aquidneck Island for the next 150 years and beyond.

You can help by supporting Newport Hospital’s 150th Anniversary “Campaign for the Future.” The goal of the micro-campaign is to raise $1.5 million for the hospital while offering donors the option of targeting their gift to one of three specific areas that most closely align with their interests.

Unrestricted Endowment

This vital asset not only creates stable funding sources for our hospital and its programs, but stands as a testament to the passion, generosity, and foresight of generations of supporters who’ve made “having health care close to home” a priority for the last 150 years. Continued funding of our endowment will ensure the sustainability of Newport Hospital in perpetuity and help us look to the future with greater confidence and best positioned to achieve our overarching goal of Delivering health with care to the patients we serve.

Area of Greatest Need

Contributions here are considered general support gifts. These funds, which provide the most flexibility, are critical because they enable us to respond quickly to our community’s most pressing health care needs. For example, when Newport Hospital staff required a muchhigher-than-expected quantity of personal protective equipment (PPE) in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, they were able to secure what they needed, in part, because of the money in our Greatest Need pool.

Workforce Development

Encouraging our employees to go for their goals makes us a stronger, better hospital. That’s why donations to this area will be used to help expand skills training and career growth opportunities in bold, new ways. Previously, professional development has generally meant helping an employee take the next linear step on their career path— e.g., a CNA becoming an RN. Moving forward, we will still facilitate such moves, but will also enable employees to take different paths altogether. For example, helping someone who transports patients today earn an associate degree in food science and nutrition, if that’s where their interests are, so they can move into the role of their dreams tomorrow.

FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES WELCOMES NEW CHAIRPERSON

Newport Hospital recently named Carol Bazarsky Chairperson of its Foundation Board of Trustees. Carol has served on the Board since 2017, and says the new role enables her to advance her support of and advocacy for the hospital she calls “a true gem” in our community.

“It’s a tremendous honor and privilege to be asked to Chair,” Carol explains, “and I’m excited for the opportunity to work alongside so many dedicated people who similarly see how fortunate we are to have a world-class caliber health care facility right here in our backyard.”

Composed entirely of volunteers who are leaders in the community, the mission of the Foundation is to inspire generosity and reach new levels of fundraising success that have a direct impact on patient care—and Carol is committed to delivering on that mission.

“As we celebrate our 150th year, I wonder what the founders would think of the hospital if they walked

through today? I think they would be impressed and feel good about the legacy they left,” she opines. “The Foundation aims to continue their extraordinary tradition of philanthropy and I am proud to be a part of that effort.”

Carol’s passions are rooted in education and health and giving back to the community is part of her DNA. Along with her husband David, she helped launch a globally recognized early childhood literacy initiative at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, and she supports music education in the Newport public schools, the Boys & Girls Club of Newport County, and many other worthy nonprofits.

BUILDING A HEALTHIER COMMUNITY FOR OUR KIDS

The days are brighter and the sunshine is warmer, making it the perfect recipe for local children to enjoy the outdoors and some good, old-fashioned physical activity. And to make sure there’s plenty of opportunities available to them, Newport Hospital and its Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund have sent $149,520 in Powered by Prince grants to 23 organizations whose programs help kids lead healthier lives.

From a wide range of sports and biking, to day camps, dancing, sailing and more, a total of 28 programs were awarded funding in support of the hands-on programming they’ll offer in the coming months.

The Fund was established in 2010 when Elizabeth Prince of Newport and her children—Guillaume de Ramel, Diana Oehrli, and Regis de Ramel—donated $3 million to Newport Hospital to fund activities for underserved children in Newport County that promote health and fitness through activity.

“One of the things we’re most excited about for this year is that more children have the chance to return to in-person programs and the benefits of being with their friends and peers,” said Guillaume de Ramel. “It is a privilege to be able to support these incredible organizations and I am beyond grateful for the positive impact their work has on the kids of our community.”

With this year’s grants, the Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund has now provided more than $1 million in funding to programs across Newport County since its inception.
