A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery Support Your Health with Good Habits For most of us the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is affecting every aspect of our daily lives. It’s currently uncertain how long current safety measures will stay in place. However, now more than ever, it’s critical that you prioritize and protect your health while practicing social distancing. Here are 3 steps you can take to stay healthy during COVID-19: 1.

Plan ahead for your meals. Health officials currently recommend minimizing outings unless absolutely necessary. That said, minimize your trips to the grocery store by thinking ahead. Utilize the meal preparation skills you’ve learned working with your Dietitian to plan your meals for the week to ensure you have all the necessary ingredients at home. Stock up on nutrient-rich foods that will stay fresh for a week or longer (such as fresh vegetables & fruits, plain frozen vegetables, seafood, chicken, nuts, oatmeal etc). Visit the Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) website to learn how long most foods last in the fridge & freezer. And remember, limit frozen dinners and high calorie/highly processed foods such as chips and frozen pizzas. Instead, eat mostly foods that boost the immune system.

CENTER FOR BARIATRIC SURGERY BOOK SHARE! We’re pleased to offer patients the ability to stop by The Miriam Hospital to take a look at and/or make copies from some top bariatric cookbooks. You’ll be able to snap pictures of the recipe pages with your phone or request to make copies of recipes as you choose…you just won’t be able to take any book home with you. To request a drop-in “book share visit” Monday-Friday during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4p.m., please feel free to email us at CBStmh@lifespan.org. _________________________________________________

Stick to Your Normal Routine. If you’re quarantined at home due to social distancing, it’s critical that you stick to your normal routine. For example, eat on a regular meal and snack schedule and find time to move each day. Although gyms are closed, use this time to go for a walk (if possible) and/or engage in exercises from the comfort of your home utilizing the plethora of online video resources that demonstrate effective home exercises.

Want to speak to a weight loss surgery mentor for additional support throughout your journey?

Prioritize mental health. During a time of stress and social distancing, mental health is a priority. Take time to identify healthy coping strategies such as video chatting with a friend, taking a walk outside and engaging in hobbies you enjoy.

If so, please send a request to our CBS email at CBStmh@lifespan.org

Already had weight loss surgery and want to “pay it forward” by becoming a mentor?
