A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery Practicing Self-Care: Exercise and Your Well-Being To say wellness has gone through a profound shift in the last year is an understatement. As we collectively navigate a global pandemic and the impact it has taken on each of us, it’s important to prioritize our wellbeing. A recurring theme we have heard here at our Center for Bariatric Surgery is declining movement time or exercise in the last year. While it has been difficult for many to return to their normal routine, it’s important that you declare your self-care, in this case, exercise, as non-negotiable. Get Creative with Movement Use this time as an opportunity to exercise more and explore new ways to move your body. If you don’t feel comfortable returning to the gym, explore other options. Online classes are growing in number and popularity. Other resources like free instructor-led YouTube videos are available in abundance and encourage aerobic activity, dancing, strength training, barre, yoga and Pilates. You can also use this opportunity to get outdoors for walks, bike rides and hikes. We encourage you to find a schedule for exercise that works in harmony with your work/life balance and enhances your quality of life. At home activities such as gardening, vacuuming or cleaning out the garage are other ways to keep your body moving and still get the health benefits of movement.

MONTHLY WELLNESS TIPS 1. 2.

Focus more on your overall health.

Try to maintain a positive attitude to support your resilience as you continue your wellness journey.

3.

Immediate and long-term health benefits Long-term health benefits of physical activity include reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and helping to maintain a healthy weight. Regular physical activity is also an effective treatment for depression and anxiety. Exercise also promotes social connections. Join a community (in person or online) that supports and encourages your movement goals. If you’re struggling to find creative ways to move your body, no matter your circumstance, speak with your Registered Dietitian to get guidance on how to start.

Move your body! Avoid using exercise as a form of compensation for a poor diet. 4.

5.

Pay attention to your hunger and satiety cues. Remember that small changes can really add up and lead to big results!

FEATURED RECIPE OF THE MONTH Spinach and Mushroom Quinoa Bowl

Adapted from https://www.pumpkinnspice.com/ Light, healthy, and full of fresh veggies and plant-based protein, this quinoa bowl is delicious and nutritious. It also serves as easy lunch or dinner throughout the week. Simply make, refrigerate, and then divide into portions and your meal is ready for the next few days.

Ingredients: ▪ 1 cups uncooked quinoa, rinsed per package directions ▪ 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth ▪ 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil ▪ 8 ounces fresh sliced mushrooms (any kind) ▪ 3 cups fresh baby spinach ▪ 2 cups chickpeas rinsed and drained ▪ 3 tablespoons shaved Parmesan cheese For the dressing: ▪ ¼ cup white balsamic vinegar ▪ ¼ cup olive oil ▪ 1 teaspoon garlic powder ▪ ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning ▪ Black pepper to taste Instructions: 1. Cook quinoa according to package directions, using chicken broth for more flavor, if desired. 2. While quinoa is cooking, pour olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add mushrooms and sauté until browned. Remove to a plate and set aside. 3. In same skillet, add spinach and cook for 2-3 minutes or until wilted. Remove and place with mushrooms. 4. To make the dressing, combine the vinegar, olive oil, garlic powder, Italian seasoning and pepper. 5. Once quinoa is cooked, add in spinach, mushrooms, chickpeas, and Parmesan cheese. Pour dressing over quinoa mixture and toss to coat. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.
