A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery HOW STRESS AND HORMONES AFFECT FOOD CRAVINGS The human brain controls how we interpret our senses like smell and sight, our thoughts, physical sensations and body actions. When we eat, our brain crafts memories about our eating experiences. Cues in our environment can activate memories of the pleasurable experience. In some stressful situations, pleasurable memories can lead to cravings for unhealthy foods.

Therefore, stress can change a person’s eating behaviors and increase the desire for highly palatable foods. Our brains have a reward center and high palatable foods—which are high in calories, sugar and fat—stimulate the brain reward center more than low-calorie foods such as fruit or vegetables.

The hormone cortisol is also released during periods of stress and increases appetite. When the body is under repetitive stress, levels of cortisol can remain high, which can further alter appetite changes. A study investigated stress-induced cortisol and eating behaviors and found that women had a higher caloric intake and consumed more sweet and high-fat foods compared to participants who had low cortisol activity. Chronic stress can contribute to abdominal fat, irregular eating patterns, an increased risk for obesity and a change in food preferences. However, the brain can be shaped and molded; it can learn new behaviors regardless of age. Certain situations can trigger poor food choices or overeating. Keep a journal and note the time of day your cravings occur. This may help you identify what triggers those desires. Get plenty of rest and incorporate stress management techniques such as exercise and mediation into your daily routine. Finally, prepare and carry nutritious snacks with you.

FEATURED RECIPE OF THE MONTH High Protein Baked Blueberry Oatmeal Cups from www.eatgood4life.com Ingredients & Materials Needed: • 3 cups old fashioned oats • 6 stevia packets or ½ tsp liquid stevia • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 2 tsp aluminum free baking powder • 1 tsp salt • 2 mashed ripe bananas • 3 tbsp canola oil • 2-4 scoops of protein powder, plain or vanilla • 2 eggs • 2 tsp vanilla extract • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk • 1 cup fresh blueberries Instructions: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 12 cup muffin pan with cooking spray or line with paper liners.

2. Add the mashed bananas, oil, eggs, milk and vanilla to a large bowl and mix until combined. Add the oats, cinnamon, protein powder, salt and baking powder and mix through with the wet ingredients.

3. With a spatula fold in the blueberries. The batter is going to be sort of liquid like, this is normal. With a medium scoop fill the prepared muffin cups all the way to the top.

4. Bake for 25 minutes or until set and just lightly brown on the edges. Allow the cups to cool completely before eating.

The surgical and nursing team would love to see how you are doing! Visits can be scheduled Monday-Friday during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
