A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery Is Eating Breakfast Important? You’ve probably heard that eating breakfast is part of a healthy diet. Breakfast means to break your fast which we all do at some point in our day when we eat our first meal. But if you’re someone who isn’t hungry in the morning or who experiences nausea in the morning, eating your first meal later may be better. While there are benefits to eating breakfast, it’s more important to listen to your hunger cues. The bigger picture (what you in eat in a whole day) is far more important than what you eat at breakfast. So, what are the benefits of eating breakfast? 1.

Fuel your body and brain: Eating breakfast will help your body perform at its best by providing calories that boosts your energy. Your brain will function better and you’ll be more alert and focused. Improve your health: Your body is more insulin sensitive in the morning and can use blood sugar more effectively. This is a great time to eat more fiber rich foods. Getting at least 25 grams of fiber daily will lower cholesterol, improve gut health and aid in regular bowel movements. Better weight control: Some studies have shown that those who eat breakfast are less likely to be overweight or obese. Eating breakfast prevents large fluctuations in your blood glucose levels, helping you to control your appetite. A recent study also found that those who skipped breakfast 4-5 days per week had as much as 55% increased risk for type 2 diabetes.
