The meeting schedule for 2017 will be Tuesdays February 7th , May 2nd , August 1st & November 7th . The hour-long meetings will still start at 6:00 pm and will be located in the Hurvitz 2 conference room (1st floor of The Miriam Hospital). All email notices to and from the Center for Bariatric Surgery will be through the new email address CBStmh@lifespan.org. If you currently do not receive the monthly email notices, please email your request to be placed on our monthly email updates.

CAN STRESS OVERRIDE HEALTHY EATING?

SOCIAL MEDIA SCENE

A new study published in Molecular Psychiatry (Sept. 2016) surveyed 58 women to assess the kind of (non life-threatening) stress they were experiencing. Simultaneously, the women were also provided high saturated fat (HSF) meals (associated with increased cardiovascular disease) and plant-based (PB) heart healthy meals. When subjects were not stressed and then fed a PB meal, inflammatory responses (i.e. C-reactive protein) were lower than when fed a HSF meal. However, inflammatory responses remained higher on a day in which the subjects remained stressed even when fed the healthier PB meal. Over time, higher inflammatory levels are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, some cancers and can even impact metabolism and weight control. Although more research is still needed, it is clear that a healthful diet PLUS reduced stress are keys to optimal health.
