A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery SOURCES OF PLANT-BASED PROTEINS Consuming more plant-based foods—such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes—lowers your intake of saturated fat and has been associated with lower risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, certain types of cancer and obesity. However, one of the main concerns with following a plant-based diet is getting adequate amounts of protein. These plant-based foods are packed with protein, an important macronutrient known as the “building block of life” due to its ability to help your body repair cells and make new ones. 1. Lentils - Lentils add 9 grams of protein per half cup and almost 15 grams of fiber. 2. Nutritional yeast - Nutritional yeast contains no dairy or active yeast, and it is found in a powder/flake form. It’s great for making dairy-free sauces, topping for popcorn and in dressings. Two tablespoons contain 8 grams of protein.

CENTER FOR BARIATRIC SURGERY BOOK SHARE! We’re pleased to offer patients the ability to stop by The Miriam Hospital to take a look at and/or make copies from some top bariatric cookbooks. You’ll be able to snap pictures of the recipe pages with your phone or request to make copies of recipes as you choose…you just won’t be able to take any book home with you. To request a drop-in “book share visit” Monday-Friday during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4p.m., please feel free to email us at CBStmh@lifespan.org.

3. Hemp seeds - Hemp seeds have many nutritional benefits. In addition, they are a good source of fiber, magnesium, omega-3 and 6 fats, vitamin E and provide seven to nine grams of protein per ounce.

_________________________________________________ Want to speak to a weight loss surgery mentor for additional support throughout your journey?

4. Chia seeds - Chia seeds are rich in fiber, omega-3 fats, protein, iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium. A two tablespoon serving of chia seeds contains four grams of protein. 5. Quinoa - Quinoa is a complete protein and one of the few plant foods that contain all nine essential amino acids. It is also high in fiber, magnesium, B vitamins, iron, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin E and various beneficial antioxidants.

Already had weight loss surgery and want to “pay it forward” by becoming a mentor? If so, please send a request to our CBS email at CBStmh@lifespan.org

6. Tofu - Tofu is an excellent source of amino acids, iron, calcium and other micro-nutrients.

FEATURED RECIPE OF THE MONTH Salmon Avocado Salad Adapted from www.skinnytaste.com Ingredients Needed: Yields: 4 servings | Serving Size: 1 bowl • • • • • • • • • • • •

4 wild salmon fillets, 4 oz each 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard, divided 3/4 teaspoon dried parsley 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt fresh black pepper, to taste 1/4 cup chopped red onion 4 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes 8 ounces avocado, diced (from 2 small) 4 cups chopped romaine lettuce (try kale or spinach to boost the nutritional value!) 1 1/2 cups red cabbage, shredded

Instructions: 1. Season salmon with 2 tsps of the Dijon, 1/2 tsp dried parsley, 1/4 tsp salt & black pepper. Adjust the oven on the second rack. Broil salmon 6 to 7 minutes, until cooked through. 2. In a large bowl, combine the red onion with olive oil, 1 tsp remaining Dijon, garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon parsley, 1/4 tsp salt and pepper to taste; let it sit about 5 minutes, so the flavor of the onion mellows. 3. Add the tomatoes, avocado and toss. When ready to serve, toss in chopped lettuce and cabbage, taste for salt and pepper and adjust as needed. 4. Divide the salad in 4 bowls and top each with salmon.
