A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery 3 Healthy Habits That Could Be Making You Bloated Many of us work hard to establish new, healthy habits. However, nutrition and health is not “one size fits all”. In other words, what works for me, may not work for you. That said, it can be frustrating when healthy eating habits result in negative side effects like abdominal discomfort. Listed below are 3 healthy habits that might be contributing to bloating. 1.
Eating Raw Veggies: The average American consumes 15 grams of fiber daily falling short of the recommended 25-35 grams daily. However, raw veggies which are high in fiber and prebiotics, the indigestible part of plants, results in bloating and discomfort for some individuals. To alleviate bloating, add raw veggies (and all fiber) into your diet gradually giving your gut time to adjust to the increase in fiber. Add one additional serving every few days or cook/roast your veggies to reduce bloating.
2.
Taking a probiotic: Probiotic supplements can improve the environment in the gut that may cause bloating. However, some people complain of bloating when starting a probiotic, but that usually resolves after a few days. For individuals with SIBO (small intestinal bowel overgrowth), who experience abdominal bloating and distension, discomfort/tightness soon after eating, excess belching, excess flatulence, nausea, or diarrhea, the addition of a probiotic may make symptoms worse.
3.
CENTER FOR BARIATRIC SURGERY BOOK SHARE! We’re pleased to offer patients the ability to stop by The Miriam Hospital to take a look at and/or make copies from some top bariatric cookbooks. You’ll be able to snap pictures of the recipe pages with your phone or request to make copies of recipes as you choose…you just won’t be able to take any book home with you. To request a drop-in “book share visit” Monday-Friday during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4p.m., please feel free to email us at CBStmh@lifespan.org. _________________________________________________ Want to speak to a weight loss surgery mentor for additional support throughout your journey? Already had weight loss surgery and want to “pay it forward” by becoming a mentor?
Protein Powders: Many protein powders contain added fibers such as inulin, chicory root and acacia. While these added fibers alleviate constipation and improve gut health, some individuals may experience gas, bloating and abdominal pain. In addition, the presence of sugar alcohols, found in many may increase bloating. If you are sensitive to these fibers and sugar alcohols, choose brands that contain as few ingredients as possible and don't use added fibers or sugar alcohols. Other food sources of added fibers and sugar alcohols include yogurts, cereals and protein bars.
If so, please send a request to our CBS email at CBStmh@lifespan.org
