A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FULLNESS AND SATISFACTION Although satisfaction is often confused with fullness, there are important differences between the two phenomena. Feeling and acknowledging your fullness after meals is an important component of developing a healthy relationship with food and managing a healthy weight. However, fullness is not the only signal that stops you from eating. This is where satisfaction comes in. Fullness can be described as the physical sensation of satiety while satisfaction is the mental sensation of satiety. If you aren’t satisfied with your meals, it’s hard to stop eating when you are full. When planning your meals, consider what foods will keep you comfortably full but most importantly consider the foods that bring you pleasure and satisfaction. Here are 3 tips to achieving satiety: 1. Avoid mindless eating - Take time to savor the food you are eating. Pay attention to how it looks, smells, feels and tastes. Eat slowly and with intention. Take 20 minutes to eat a meal; it takes approximately 20 minutes for fullness signals to be sent from the stomach to the hypothalamus in the brain. Lastly, avoid the urge to “clean your plate”. Instead, stop when you are comfortably full. 2. Build a satisfying meal– It’s possible to be full without being satisfied. Make a list of the foods you enjoy eating. Consider taste, texture, temperature, and smell of foods when building your meals. 3. Include carbohydrate, protein and fat - You can have fullness without satisfaction or vice versa. Including a healthy balance of these three nutrients in snacks and meals will help you feel more satisfied and full, while releasing hungersuppressing hormones.

Season with salt and pepper to taste. 2. Stir in garlic, onion, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, ginger and sesame oil until onions have become translucent, about 1-2 minutes. 3.
