HIGH CALORIE FOODS & CANCER RISK IN NORMAL WEIGHT WOMEN
SOCIAL MEDIA SCENE FACEBOOK Facebook Weight Loss Surgery Striders Group: Friend request Kellie Fredette Armstrong & request access to the group page. Please note that this group is patient-run & is not operated by The Center for Bariatric Surgery.
A recent study published in the August Journal of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics found that women who eat a lot of highcalorie foods may have a 10% higher risk of obesity-related cancers such as breast, ovarian, endometrial, kidney & colon cancers. The study consisted of 92,000 U.S. women and the increased cancer risk was associated more with women of normal weight & BMI status . This suggests that staying “thin” while still making poor food choices does not seem to help avoid the risk of obesity-related cancers. Calorically dense foods (i.e. chips, sweets, fast food or processed foods) are typically low in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients like fiber. The take home message is to choose more plant-based foods in your diet, and the benefits will exceed far beyond just weight control.
