HIGHER FITNESS & LOWER DEMENTIA RISK

SOCIAL MEDIA SCENE

A study conducted in Sweden and recently published in the medical journal Neurology found that women who had high cardiovascular fitness levels had an 88% lower risk for dementia than those women who were considered moderately fit. The Swedish-based study followed about 1,500 women for 44 years, tracking physical activity levels and cognitive tests. The study also revealed that women with lower fitness had a 41% higher risk for developing dementia. However, higher amounts of exercise do not always equal greater physical fitness and the quality of circulation through small blood vessels to the heart and brain are more important factors to consider. Current physical activity guidelines suggest at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise (i.e. brisk walking) 3-5 days per week. As fitness abilities improve, increasing the intensity of exercise will promote maintenance of fitness levels as well as improvements to body composition (muscle mass to fat ratio). This is another example that although genetic factors can work against you, your lifestyle habits and behaviors play a much bigger role in helping to prevent many disease states.
