A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery Avoiding Weight Regain After Bariatric Surgery

While bariatric surgery remains the most effective treatment for morbid obesity, it is still common for patients to have a small amount of weight regain after surgery. In fact, studies have shown that a portion of bariatric surgery patients can experience weight regain as early as 18 months post surgery. According to the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, as many as 50 percent of patients may regain a small amount of their excess weight (approximately 5-10 percent) two years or more following their surgery. However, growing evidence shows a variety of factors that can lead to significant weight regain, including relapse into previous eating habits, the development or reemergence of eating disorders, disordered eating and/or maladaptive eating patterns and lack of physical activity in the early years after bariatric surgery. Remember that bariatric surgery is a tool to achieve significant weight loss but inadequate postoperative adherence to recommendations can override that tool’s efficacy, leading to weight regain. Consider these tips for achieving long-term success after surgery: 1. Eat three structured meals (from whole food sources) and one or two planned snacks daily. Eat protein first with each meal and snack. 2. Prioritize time to prepare meals and snacks. 3. Engage in mindful eating practices. Eat slowly and chew food well, without distraction. 4. Choose small portions of mostly solid foods at each meal and snack. Use protein drinks as a supplement to your diet. 5. Choose calorie-free beverages. 6. Make time for activity each day and limit sedentary behaviors. 7. Attend all postoperative appointments with your surgeon and Dietitian.
