A newsletter from the Center for Bariatric Surgery Keeping Up with Your New Year’s Resolutions Many of us rang in 2020 with a New Year’s resolution. Now that we’re one month into the New Year, you may find that your initial burst of motivation is starting to wear off. Creating new habits is a great way to ensure that your drive to become healthier carries on for the rest of the year. Here are five tips to help you create long-lasting change.

1. Identify and understand your barriers. One of the first steps to making a change is to identify and understand the barriers you’ll face in trying to achieve your goal–before attempting to actually achieve that goal. If you don’t have a kettle or coffee pot, it’s hard to make coffee. If you’ve struggled to make changes in the past, there are likely good reasons.

2. Find your “why”—Identify a Motivation for Change. Once you’ve identified the barriers between you and a goal or change, it’s time to figure out your true motivation for wanting to change. Make sure that you are setting this goal for yourself--That’s the foundation for lasting change.

3. Create small, motivating goals. Don’t try and change everything at once! Pick just one thing, make a plan, and stick to it. The other key to success is setting realistic, achievable goals that lead to incremental change. Setting SMART goals will be useful in doing this.

SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. By setting SMART goals, you set yourself up for success.

4. Plan for Roadblocks. Any time you fail to make a change, consider it a step toward your goal and a lesson learned. Remember that each attempt you make is a sincere attempt to reaching your goal. Take a moment to think about what you did and why it didn't work.

5. Commit and build consistency. Tell your family and friends about your goals or join a support group. You can also join an incentivized challenge or create your own—bragging rights count as an incentive too. Remember, the bridge between your dream and reality is consistency. The more consistent you are, the closer you get to your target goal.

FEATURED RECIPE OF THE MONTH Pesto Zoodles from www.eatfunctionalfoods.org

Ingredients/Tools Needed: • 1 zucchini (ends chopped off) • 1 yellow squash (ends chopped off) • A spiralizer • 1 Tbsp avocado oil • Roasted veggies of choice • Protein of choice

To make the Kale Pesto, you will need: • 2 cups chopped kale • 1/2 cup olive oil • 1 clove garlic • Juice from one lemon • 2 Tbsp natural almond butter • Sea salt, to taste Instructions: 1. Spiralize zucchini and yellow squash (you may purchase “zoodles” which are already spiralized).

2. Prepare the pesto by pulsing all ingredients in a food processor or blender. Set aside.

3. Heat avocado oil in a skillet over medium heat.

4. Once the oil is hot, throw in the “zoodles” and cook over medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes until soft. Add your choice of protein (tofu, white cannellini beans, wild salmon, wild mackerel or organic free-range chicken), roasted veggies (mushrooms, Brussels sprouts, broccolini, etc.), and kale pesto sauce. Enjoy!

COME BACK TO VISIT YOUR CARE TEAM! All post-op patients are welcome to come back to visit the staff that cared for them while they were at The Miriam Hospital having surgery. The surgical and nursing team would love to see how you are doing! Visits can be scheduled Monday-Friday during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
