EXPLORE RHODE ISLAND!

CENTER FOR BARIATRIC SURGERY BOOK SHARE!

Summer time is a great time of year to get outside and explore nature with family and friends. Here in Rhode Island, there’s many opportunities for walking, hiking and water-based activities. The Rhode Island Blueways Alliance and the Rhode Island Land Trust Council work in partnership to maintain the ExploreRI website, an online resource that lists information and provides education about various hiking and water trails throughout the state. Visit www.exploreRI.org to view a complete listing of all trail locations and maps.

Did You Know? A 200 lb. adult hiking briskly for 60 minutes can burn approximately 450-550 calories. Strap on a 8-10+ lb. backpack and you could even burn 50-100 calories more per hour!

We’re pleased to offer patients the ability to stop by The Miriam Hospital to take a look at and/or make copies from some top bariatric cookbooks. You’ll be able to snap pictures of the recipe pages with your phone or request to make copies of recipes as you choose…you just won’t be able to take any book home with you. To request a drop-in “book share visit” Monday-Friday during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4p.m., please feel free to email dietitians Kimberly Maloomian at kmaloomian@lifespan.org or Sara Stiles at sstiles@lifespan.org. Want to speak to a weight loss surgery mentor for additional support throughout your journey? Already had weight loss surgery and want to “pay it forward” by becoming a mentor? If so, contact Sara Stiles, RD, LDN at 401-793-3922 or sstiles@lifespan.org for more information.

FEATURED RECIPE OF THE MONTH Chili-Lime Roasted Chickpeas Author: Ann Taylor Pittman from www.cookinglight.com Ingredients & Materials Needed: • Baking sheet lined with foil or parchment paper • Small bowl & spatula • 1- 15 oz. can chickpeas, drained & rinsed • 1 ½ Tbsp. olive oil • 1 ½ tsp. chili powder • 1 ½ tsp. grated lime rind • ¼ tsp. kosher salt Instructions: 1) Preheat oven to 400º F. Set up baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. If using foil, spray foil with non-stick cooking spray. 2) Arrange the rinsed & drained chickpeas in a single layer on some paper towels to soak up excess water & lightly pat dry. 3) Combine the chickpeas & olive oil in a small bowl and stir to coat evenly. Then place on foil-lined baking sheet. 4) Bake for about 30 minutes or until chickpeas are crispy. Stir the chickpeas 15 minutes into the cooking time. 5) Once crispy, remove from the oven and sprinkle with the chili powder and grated lime & salt. Let cool thoroughly. 6) Enjoy alone as a snack or atop a salad or soup as an alternative crouton.
