SPOTLIGHT ON SPICES: CINNAMON
SOCIAL MEDIA SCENE
Cinnamon is one of the most popular spices during the Fall season. Cinnamon has been revered for it’s aromatic and perfume-like qualities over the years and continues to be the subject of much scientific and medical research . Ceylon cinnamon (as opposed to Cassia cinnamon) has been linked to improvements in blood sugar control &diabetes, lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol as well as potentially reducing risk factors for dementia and cancer. Using cinnamon as part of your healthy diet is quite simple. Sprinkling between ½ tsp. to 1 Tbsp. in your hot cereal, fruit, yogurt or on roasted root vegetables adds a flavor boost without any sugar or salt. More research is needed to determine the benefits and/or risks of using supplemental forms of cinnamon for certain health conditions. In the meantime, enjoy cinnamon to help add some spice to your life!
