RESISTANCE TRAINING IMPROVES EXERCISE MOTIVATION Researchers at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland studied 104 healthy 65-75 year-olds to investigate the effects that 9 months of supervised resistance training (RT) had on exercise motivation, exercise planning and exercise self-efficacy. The study subjects were previously identified as not meeting physical activity guidelines for endurance exercise at baseline and did not have prior RT experience. The results of this study revealed that 9 months of regular RT lead to increased motivation and enjoyment for physical activity. The incidence and rate of exercise planning also increased, indicating that the subjects started to think about how to start and maintain a physically active lifestyle. After completing the supervised RT, 46% of the subjects continued RT on their own. These finding suggest that intrinsic motivation, as well as the type of exercise intervention, can influence one’s ability to continue the healthy lifestyle behavior. T. Kekäläinen, K. Kokko, T.
