Very Special Arts Rhode Island sponsored a two year art project that involved children from 155 schools and organizations in every city and town in Rhode Island.These children created a gift of art - more than ten thousand six-inch ceramic tiles for installation on the walls of this hospital. On every foor, tiles created between 1992 and 1994 represent subject matter as individual as each child; the only requirement was the very best work he or she could do.The displays, supported by teachers, volunteers and generous donations, also include sixteen hundred tiles made by hospitalized children and their caregivers. The Circle of Clay celebrates the vision and spirit of the children of Rhode Island. It brightened the day of all who came to this hospital. Peter J. Geisser, Project Director Catherine D. Quilts tell stories and remind us of moments in our history. The Circle of Clay has become the “quilt” of the Hasbro Children’s Hospital.There are little pieces of triumph, scraps of tears, swatches of comfort in many textures and designs sewn together under the masterful eye of one who saw the need for us to recognize the gifts of our children. The Circle of Clay is the quilt that surrounds us and hugs us in those times we need comfort. It is there to tuck us in at night. 1989 Child Development Center Seniors at the RI School for the Deaf went to Special Needs Programs in Providence, Warwick, and Cranston schools to make tiles with students with disabilities.The result was the 6th foor of APC building, and the Child Development Center had ceramic tiles made by students with disabilities circle the entire foor. In June of 1989, Deborah Brayton, the new director of VSA Rhode Island, then known as Very Special Arts, introduced herself and asked Peter Geisser if he knew that there was preparation to build a children’s hospital.They both had the idea that a project like this one at CDC done on a statewide level would be a great way for children to create an extraordinary work of art for this new hospital.

1990 The hospital is approached with the idea of the Circle of Clay at CDC being expanded to the new children’s hospital. Peter Geisser and Deborah Brayton approached the hospital administration and offered to create an expanded version of the project that had been completed at CDC.This new project will include children from the entire state of Rhode Island. When architects Shepley, Bulfnch, Richardson & Abbott Inc. were chosen to design the new building, they embraced the concept of the project, then were involved in the choices of clay and glaze color so that these tiles would remain a neutral element in the hospital, which would work with the changes in the interior designs and colors that would take place through the years.
This new project would include children from the entire state of Rhode Island.
1992–1993 Invitations were sent to every school in Rhode Island asking schools to make 6� square tiles with children, and to include students with special needs in the project. Clay tools and templates were provided to the 155 schools and community organizations in all 39 towns and cities of Rhode Island. Every Tuesday in 1992-93, students from the RI School for the Deaf and the RI School of Design went to the Potter Building at RI Hospital and made 6-inch-square tiles with any children who were in the hospital that week.
Children who were ambulatory gathered in the activity room to make tiles. Student volunteers went to rooms to make tiles with parents and infants.
Special workshops were held for support groups of families who have lost children to illness.These workshops brought some of the most meaningful tiles made by parents and siblings.
The Circle of Clay gave patients a way of looking to the future.At frst focus was on making tiles with the young children and teens. Soon, the project expanded to parents of infants and parents and patients in the Intensive Care Unit.
At the end of the year, there were 1,600 tiles made by children from the hospital!

Students from the RI School for the Deaf went to other schools and special education programs to help kids make tiles.
Each child was asked to do their very best work because these tiles would be “get well� cards for children in the hospital.
All 39 cities and towns of Rhode Island participated in the Circle of Clay. Teachers and students in 155 different schools helped by making tiles for the new hospital. Some teachers fred and glaze fred for schools which did not have kilns.
Workshops were held in churches and community groups.
Each child was given a Circle of Clay button and a poster with all 10,000 names at the opening of the hospital.
Tiles were fred at the School for the Deaf, and in schools all over the state.
When tiles were bisque-fred they then were glazed with a commercial glaze “British Tweed.�
Faculty and students at the RI School of Design volunteered time and technical help.
5,000 additional tiles were glaze fred in schools around the state.
During school vacations 5,000 tiles were glaze fred at the RI School of Design; the largest single set of fring in the history of the school done by RISD student volunteers.

1993 In June 1993 all 10,000 tiles came to a warehouse near the hospital where the task of laying out the tiles for each foor was done through the summer. Cathy Davis supervised several students from the School for the Deaf who helped her sort and box the tiles ready for installation.
STORY
Students from the RI School for the Deaf went to other schools and special education programs to help kids make tiles.
In June 1993, completed tiles from 155 organizations were brought to a warehouse across the street from the new hospital to be inventoried and sorted.
For three months, the tiles were counted and arranged and repacked for placement on each of the seven foors. By September 1993 all the tiles were arranged and repacked for placement in the new hospital.
Each morning Geisser and one student would work at the hospital.At noon they returned to school for class. After school they would return to the hospital and do more installation.
1994 From September 1993 to February 1994, Geisser and students from the RI School for the Deaf placed the tiles on the walls. By February 1994 all but the lower level was completed.
Completion of the Circle of Clay, seven foors of murals with 10,000 tiles made by children for Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The lower-level of the hospital was not completed for another year and installation of tiles was done in 1996.

On May 19, 1995, President Bill Clinton welcomed Hasbro Children’s Hospital patient Jeffrey Beckwith to the White House Oval Offce, where they created ceramic tiles for Hasbro Children’s “Circle of Clay.”

The Circle of Clay became a model for many other projects in RI schools and communities. It also became a model for other health facilities such as the Hospital Manchester England, which used the project to expand art in their new facility.
