A Mother’s Love and a Hospital’s Healing Hands In January 2008 when Jamie Cline went into labor a month early with her second daughter Jenna, she had no idea her baby girl was about to defy all odds and would one day be described as “a miracle on top of a miracle.”

Before Jamie was rushed to the birthing hospital for an emergency caesarean section, the placenta had separated from the uterus, depriving Jenna of oxygen. Her umbilical cord was also wrapped twice around her neck. When she was delivered, Jenna wasn’t breathing and CPR was implemented. The little girl was transferred to the neonatal intensive care unit where specialists from Hasbro Children’s Hospital, including nephrologist M. Khurram Faizan, MD, took over her care. Whole-body hypothermia, in the form of a special cooling blanket, was used in an effort to reduce

Miraculously, her liver regenerated, her stomach healed and her breathing improved. Her kidneys, however, did not improve. Because of the lack of oxygen to the left side of her brain, Jenna might not have use of the left side of her body. Doctors had to let Jamie and Scott know the road ahead could be a very difficult one. They couldn’t say with certainty if the little girl would be able to eat, talk or kick a ball. Only time would tell. After two months of intensive care, Jenna was able to go home.

Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Dunkin’ Donuts Team Up to Create “4-Safety” Program In the fall, Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Dunkin’ Donuts announced a new joint initiative, the “4-Safety” program, and unveiled the program’s Community Outreach Van. The effort, made possible thanks to the generosity of Dunkin’ Donuts franchisees in Rhode Island and Bristol County, MA who have committed $1 million to Hasbro Children’s Hospital over five years, will work with families in local communities to reduce the risk of accidental injury. In Rhode Island alone, between 2007 and 2011, over one-third of child deaths were due to injuries, many of which were accidental and preventable.

“This program is a wonderful opportunity for us to further focus our efforts to support and improve the health and well-being of those we care for outside of our hospital’s walls,” said Michael J. Mello, MD, MPH, FACEP, Director of the Injury Prevention Center at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “Dunkin’ Donuts and their franchisees have long been supporters of Hasbro Children’s Hospital; their commitment to establish this program underscores their dedication to the community.”

The “4-Safety” program hosts local events to provide safety information to children and their families through the “4-Safety” Van. The focus of the outreach changes seasonally based on research and data collected by the program. Sports-related head injuries were the focus in the fall, burn and fire safety during the winter and bullying will be highlighted this spring. The “4-Safety” Van offers takeaway materials to visitors, as well as short educational videos and interactive demonstration models.

Additional elements of the “4-Safety” partnership include a Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest for high school students and a special “Dunkin’ Donuts Injury Prevention Scholars” component.

For the PSA contest, students will be encouraged to submit video and poster PSAs in support of specific safety initiatives. Through the “Dunkin’ Donuts Injury Prevention Scholars,” undergraduate students will play an important role in developing and implementing “4-Safety” program initiatives for course credit at Brown University.

Winter Safety Tips

Fire and Burn Safety in the Home With more than 300 children ages 19 and younger being treated every day in emergency rooms across the country for burn-related injuries, this is a good time to brush up on simple steps that can help keep homes and children safe. A child’s skin is very thin and burns quickly, making burn prevention that much more important.

Tips to prevent injuries from burns and fires: f Install barriers such as safety gates around fireplaces, wood and gas stoves and radiators. d Place space heaters out of the reach of children. f Keep hot liquids, such as a cup of hot coffee, away from young children. d Turn all pot handles away from the stove’s edge. f Check the water heater temperature and make sure it is set no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit. d Properly install and maintain the smoke alarms in your home. f Smoke detectors should be on every level in the home and near all bedrooms.

They should be tested once a month to make sure they are working properly. d Have a fire escape plan so children and adults know what to do in case of a fire. f Extinguish candles before leaving a room or use battery powered candles for a safer alternative.
