HEALTHY FUTURES HASBRO CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL • 2020

e’ve all heard how 2020 is “the year of vision and clarity”—a clever play on the fact that 20/20 visual acuity is considered the ideal. Here at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, our focus is crystal clear too. As part of Lifespan, Rhode Island’s largest health care system, our sights are firmly set on Delivering health with care to the children of Rhode Island and southern New England every day.

Whether it’s clinical care, medical research and education, or community services, we always strive to offer the most advanced and highest quality pediatric care in the region in a comfortable and compassionate environment. Your generosity helps make much of our work possible, and for that, we are truly grateful. Thank you for sharing in our vision.

T

o say this year has presented challenges unlike any in the history of Lifespan would be a drastic understatement. For all of us, these have been difficult times that have tested our combined resolve.

Yet despite the unpredictable nature of the world today, two unwavering constants remain: our commitment to our community and our community’s kindness on behalf of Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Simply, we would not be able to advance our mission of lifesaving work without the support of our donors and friends. I am eternally grateful for your generosity.

TIMOTHY J. BABINEAU, MD President and Chief Executive Officer, Lifespan

Re-emerging amid the COVID-19 pandemic is the tremendous success of the Every Child, Every Day campaign and the ongoing renovations transforming Hasbro Children’s into the pediatric hospital of tomorrow. We are seeing incredible progress that I am eager to share with you. I also wish to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Dr. John Murphy, who graciously postponed his planned retirement to lead Rhode Island and Hasbro Children’s hospitals through the end of 2020. While there is much to be optimistic—even excited—about, we must also realize the challenges of the road ahead and the impact of many canceled fundraising events. Hasbro Children’s was built by the community, for the community. And today, our community’s support is more important than ever. Thank you for being a vital part of our hospital’s family and for standing side-by-side with us as we build a better future for the children and families who depend on us.

P

ediatric medicine continues to evolve and advance in ways that are unprecedented, and innovations in technology and research are enabling us to do things today that we couldn’t even imagine just a few short years ago. But, it’s still the people of Hasbro Children’s—and those who support us—who remain the heart and soul of our hospital and make it such a special place of hope and healing. Our dedicated doctors, nurses, and support staff are always there for the kids and families in our community—no matter what. As they’ve demonstrated throughout 2020, not even a pandemic can prevent them from Delivering health with care. Pediatric illness doesn’t stop because of COVID-19, and neither do they. So, we thank our team for their heroic efforts during these challenging times. Of course, our people would not be able to have the lifesaving impact they do without the support of people like you—caring donors who not only love reading the success stories in Healthy Futures, but help make them possible. That’s why it’s with great appreciation we share our annual honor roll of supporters within these pages.

RENOVATIONS TAKING SHAPE AT HASBRO CHILDREN’S

hile many aspects of life were paused or changed when COVID-19 became part of our everyday life earlier this year, many things in health care kept moving along. This holds true not only for the care of all patients who needed emergency or medical attention, but also for the Every Child, Every Day campaign and the renovations underway throughout Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

and endoscopy. Other changes to the PACU include a redesigned pre-op area that enables a better flow, a dedicated space for child life, a charting area for staff, and Renée’s personal favorite—a quiet isolation room in recovery. Renée says, “The quiet isolation room in recovery has been a great addition for patients who need that private, non-stimulating space to recover from their procedure.”

With renovations beginning in August 2019, the Tomorrow Fund Clinic—where pediatric hematology/oncology patients receive outpatient care—was the first area to be completed earlier this year. The PACE Clinic (see page 6), the preand post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) areas, and the Izzy Foundation surgical waiting room also received their updates, and the positive impact is felt by staff and patients.

Also recently completed is the Balise Healing Garden located outside the lower level of the hospital. Work done to the pavilion, arborway, theater, fountain, and picnic area have brought new life to the outdoor space. The installation of a beautiful new playground, fencing, and new landscaping and walking path make it an inviting area for staff and patients to get a healthy dose of fresh air.

“The recovery room area is now open and bright, and patients are commenting that it’s a wonderful, fresh and open look,” says Renée Cacchiotti, MSN, RN, Clinical Manager of PACU

Construction in the pediatric intensive care unit is under way and will be completed in the fall of 2020. The emergency department—which saw nearly 60,000 patients last year—is

also undergoing a complete transformation, in phases, as it remains open and fully functioning while maintaining the state’s only pediatric level 1 trauma center. Lindsay McKeever, RN, Nursing Director for Emergency Services, explains, “We have had to strengthen our communications during the renovation because we’re not all in one area anymore, but once it’s finished the new space will be a true reflection of the care we give—put together, well-coordinated, and high tech like the current medicine we practice.” Renovations to inpatient floors have shifted slightly as a result of the pandemic but work in the pediatric medical/surgical unit on the fourth floor started this summer. Pediatric 5 inpatient, where hematology/oncology patients often spend weeks or months receiving intense treatment, will begin next summer. The schedule for renovations of this unit were impacted during the pandemic because the specially ventilated rooms on the red pod were needed for adult cancer patients.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

The final phase of renovations will include the lobby and ambulatory outpatient areas in 2022. “Everyone is looking forward to the reactions of patients and families as more of the new and improved hospital is unveiled,” Vice President of Pediatric Services, Tracey Wallace said. “We’re grateful for the community’s support in helping this meaningful transformation become a reality!”

PACE CLINIC BRIDGES URGENT PSYCHIATRIC CARE

PACE staff: Janet Anderson, EdD; Kathleen Donise, MD; and Maggie Rego

E

arlier this year, an agitated 17-year-old who’d purposely injured his hand was rushed by his parents to the emergency department at Hasbro Children’s Hospital.

The teen was one of thousands of kids who come to the ED each year—4,336 in 2019 alone—in the midst of a mental health crisis. And he was one of the first to be referred to Hasbro Children’s new PACE Clinic for the help he and his family needed. A very generous gift from the Collis Foundation has been instrumental in making the clinic’s work possible. PACE—which stands for Psychiatry Access, Continuity, and Evaluation—serves children who are in urgent need of mental health care but do not require inpatient admission. Because the wait for an outpatient appointment can be weeks or longer, the PACE Clinic was created to bridge that gap. It provides short-term treatment until a child is established with an ongoing provider.

6

“We are seeing young children and teens who are struggling with anxiety, depression, and difficulty regulating their emotions and behavior,” says Kathleen Donise, MD, Director of Lifespan’s Pediatric Behavioral Health Emergency Services. “The PACE Clinic allows kids who are not at acute risk of danger to themselves or others to be evaluated and stabilized in a less stressful environment than the ED,” she continues. “It frees up beds there and gets children more quickly on their way to appropriate, ongoing care.” PACE is not a walk-in clinic. Patients must be referred by clinicians at the ED, the Access Center at Bradley Hospital, or the Kids’ Link RI telephone crisis triage service. Psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and a care coordinator staff the clinic. Staff psychologist Janet Anderson, EdD, treated the distressed 17-year-old at the PACE Clinic after he was referred by the ED. At his initial evaluation, Dr. Anderson learned that he’d moved to Rhode Island after his family was displaced. The teen had suffered years of relentless bullying from his peers, which led him to contemplate suicide.

Then COVID-19 brought even greater stress to the boy and his family. One evening during an argument, he boiled over and stabbed a pen into his hand. “He was angry and depressed, but as we talked it became clear that he had many strengths in his life, such as music and art. He also loved his family, but felt disconnected from them,” Dr. Anderson says. “By the end of our first session, he was in a much brighter mood and had been able to talk with his father about his feelings for the first time. After a couple of appointments, he went on to treatment in the community, eager to continue his therapy.”

“WE ARE SEEING YOUNG CHILDREN AND TEENS WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, AND DIFFICULTY REGULATING THEIR EMOTIONS AND BEHAVIOR...” — Kathleen Donise, MD

insurance issues, and helps locate other assistance as needed, such as support groups for parents and siblings. “We treat the family as a whole,” says Maggie. “There is so much need and so few resources that unless you have someone in a role like mine, coordinating care, parents can feel like they’re fending for themselves. And that’s very frustrating.” The sheer volume of children seeking crisis care at Hasbro Children’s emergency department— including a 2,000-percent increase in patients with autism spectrum disorder—galvanized philanthropist Ellen Collis, who directs the Collis Foundation with her son, daughter, and daughter-in-law. Mrs. Collis, who serves on the Rhode Island Hospital Foundation Board, was deliberating on a leadership gift from the Collis Foundation to Hasbro Children’s Every Child, Every Day campaign. The work of the PACE Clinic struck a deep chord. “It became very clear that the most important need that had to be met was the staggering increase in behavioral health patients,” says Mrs. Collis. “My family and I are very happy that we could make a gift to the campaign and be a part of creating the PACE Clinic.”

“The beauty of the PACE Clinic is that families have access to both psychotherapy and medication evaluation under one roof,” Dr. Anderson continues. “Being seen within a week of the ED visit provides an opportunity, an openness, for most family members to recognize the need to do things differently.” She adds, “Our care coordinator makes a huge difference in our ability to move kids through to ongoing treatment. PACE is a very powerful intervention.” Margaret “Maggie” Rego is pivotal in her role as the clinic’s care coordinator, connecting families to appropriate providers within the clinic and helping them establish ongoing care in the community. She addresses the hardships that might be an obstacle to a child’s treatment, such as transportation and Plaque located outside the clinic

FM GLOBAL GIFT WILL HELP MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE “

T

hink globally, act locally” is an approach a wellknown Rhode Islandbased company employs when it comes to their philanthropy and corporate social responsibility commitments. FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers, leverages their considerable reach and resources to make a world of difference and touch lives in the local communities where they do business.

In addition to putting their money where their heart is— FM Global fosters philanthropy among its people by matching employees’ donations—the company also encourages its staff to stay active in the community and helps them organize volunteering efforts, including those that benefit Hasbro Children’s. FM Global employees show up for the hospital’s bigger events like Heroes Ball and Radiothon, as well as smaller activities like serving food to families at their summer barbeque.

“We get calls from organizations all the time asking us to contribute to many worthwhile causes,” says Tom Lawson, FM Global’s Chairman and CEO. “But generally speaking, we like to allocate our dollars to support those causes that are nearest and dearest to our employees’ hearts—because we believe it’s our employees who know what the greatest needs are in the communities where they live. For our employees in Rhode Island, Hasbro Children’s Hospital is definitely one of those important organizations.”

“WE BELIEVE WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO SUPPORT THE COMMUNITIES AROUND US AND TO BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR...”

Tom—who along with his wife, Cathy, contributes generously to Hasbro Children’s on a personal level—points out that FM Global also tries to support entities that have a prevention focus and, most importantly, where they believe their money can do the most good and have the most positive impact. “Hasbro Children’s Hospital checks those boxes too,” he adds. Recently, FM Global donated $500,000 to Hasbro Children’s in support of its Every Child, Every Day campaign, which is an exciting multi-year effort. Its goal is to raise $35 million to bring about historic changes to Hasbro Children’s that will transform healing spaces across the hospital.

— Tom Lawson, Chairman and CEO, FM Global Also, in an overwhelming show of support for health care workers of Lifespan and their families, a major gift of a combined $75,000 was made to Lifespan’s Employee COVID Relief Fund—$25,000 from Shivan S. Subramaniam and his wife, Jyothi, and $50,000 from the FM Global Foundation. Mr. Subramaniam is a longtime member of the Lifespan Board of Directors and the retired Chairman and CEO of FM Global. Moreover, FM Global is the largest local corporate giver to the annual United Way Fund—contributing $2.37 million in 2019—and a supporter of many other nonprofits who do good work. “We believe we have a responsibility to support the communities around us and to be a good neighbor,” Tom explains. “So, that’s what we do.”

ALEXANDER’S UNIFORMS PROUDLY SUPPORTS HASBRO CHILDREN’S

A

lexander’s Uniforms is a Rhode Island-based company that has been in business for nearly 75 years. Over the decades, they’ve not only served their customers in the medical, restaurant, and hospitality industries—outfitting them with professional apparel and footwear—but they’ve also served their community. The company supports many local nonprofit organizations, like Rhode Island Food Bank, Hope & Hospice and several area hospitals, including Hasbro Children’s. “Hasbro Children’s Hospital is one of the true heartbeats of our state, and we are proud to help them in any way we can,” says Chris Gentili, an owner of Alexander’s Uniforms along with his parents, Michael and Joan. Longtime supporters of the annual Hasbro Children’s Hospital Radiothon, Alexander’s recently pledged $250,000 to the hospital’s Every Child, Every Day campaign. “I think there is a societal responsibility to give back to the community and to help our next generation reach their fullest potential,” Chris explains, “which is why supporting Hasbro Children’s is such a focus for us.”

Chris adds that he marvels at the world-class care being delivered in our own backyard, and says he is touched by the hospital’s lifesaving impact. “The stories I hear about what these kids and their families go through are gut-wrenching . . . but at the same time inspirational, too.” In addition to his company pledge to Hasbro Children’s, Alexander’s also made a generous donation of scrubs to Rhode Island Hospital, recognizing that frontline workers would need to change scrubs more frequently while treating COVID-19 patients.

AT SEASONS CORNER MARKET, GIVING BACK COMES NATURALLY

I

f you’ve ever been to one of the more than 40 Seasons Corner Market locations in Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts and New Hampshire, it likely didn’t take long for you to notice the company’s commitment to the community. From window signage and donation containers at the registers to special charity videos playing at the pump, the premium convenience stores found at Shell gas stations are an extension of the Delli Carpini family. “My parents worked hard and didn’t always have much, but they always focused on helping others,” says Sandra Delli Carpini, owner, along with her husband, Andrew, who serves as CEO. “Giving back is in our DNA. It’s who we are, and Hasbro Children’s is a huge part of that.”

A relationship that began nearly 25 years ago with the company donating the proceeds of hot dog sales has only grown. Along with hosting countless donation collections, the family company partnered with local NFL star Stephen Gostkowski in 2014 to create the “Kick 4 Kids” challenge, helping to raise more than $125,000 in six years. And in the spring of 2020, the family took its philanthropy to a new level, committing a significant six-figure gift to the Every Child, Every Day campaign to modernize Hasbro Children’s. In recognition of the family’s incredible generosity, the hospital will name the fourth-floor playroom in their honor. “It’s critical that we invest in our children,” adds Andrew, “and health care is one of the most important ways. We’ve heard so many stories from customers and staff about how the hospital has touched their lives. Hasbro Children’s is so much more than a building, and we couldn’t be more fortunate to have it in our backyard.”

SUPPORT OF THE COMMUNITY IS A HALLMARK OF BALISE national “Share the Love” event. Through the annual 8-week effort, Subaru donates $250 for every new vehicle sold or leased to the purchaser’s choice of benefitting charities. On top of this, Balise directly donates additional funds. More than $30,000 was raised for Hasbro Children’s that first year, and the Balise Subaru team has partnered with the hospital every year since. Today, this “Share the Love” partnership has led to over $150,000 for the state’s only pediatric hospital. “From the moment you visit the hospital and see all they do for kids and families, it’s impossible to not want to get involved in a deeper way,” Alex explains.

ith nearly 30 automobile dealerships and related businesses across southern New England bearing its name, Balise Motor Sales Group is one of the region’s most recognizable brands. They’re also one of its most philanthropic. “It has always been a priority to make a positive impact in the communities where we live and work,” says Alexandra “Alex” Balise, the company’s director of marketing. “And Hasbro Children’s Hospital checks off all the boxes that are important to us as a family and as a company for charitable giving.” The company’s partnership with Hasbro Children’s began in 2015 when staff at its Subaru dealership in West Warwick overwhelmingly chose the hospital as the local beneficiary of the

10

In 2019, Balise did just that – taking their commitment to Hasbro Children’s to the next level with a leadership gift of $750,000 to the hospital’s Every Child, Every Day campaign. The campaign is funding sweeping renovations, creating new healing spaces, and transforming Hasbro Children’s into the pediatric hospital of the future. Along with supporting modernization projects, Balise’s gift will help re-imagine the hospital’s outdoor Healing Garden. The space will be named for Balise in honor of their generosity. “The campaign gift was a way to get our entire group involved and further expand our relationship,” says Alex. “Having an opportunity to support a place where kids and families can escape to and, hopefully, one that puts a smile on their faces wasn’t something we could turn down.” And true to their roots, Balise never really stops giving, having also donated two electric ride-on vehicles for patients to drive on their way into surgery, helping to ease their nerves as well as those of their parents. “If there’s a way we can help, we want to help,” adds Alex.

DUNKIN’ PLEDGES $750,000 TO HASBRO CHILDREN’S

F

ew brands are more popular or ubiquitous than Dunkin’— America’s favorite coffee and baked goods chain. Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts are home to nearly 300 Dunkin’ locations, and their more than 7,000 employees in the market provide exceptional customer experiences to the thousands of loyal patrons who stop in every day. But success for Dunkin’ isn’t measured only in happy customers. It’s measured in healthy communities, too. And the company’s longstanding commitment to community is rooted in the very neighborhoods where they do business. “Local franchise owners like myself live right here in Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts,” says Rob Batista, who owns several local Dunkin’ restaurants. “We grew up here, we’ve raised our families here, and we’ve grown our businesses here. So, we strongly believe we have a responsibility to give back to the communities we serve.”

For more than a decade, Dunkin’ has been a generous and active supporter of Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The primary fundraising initiative Dunkin’ employs to support the hospital is their annual Iced Coffee Day, where they donate $1 for every iced coffee they sell to support the hospital. Since its launch in 2010, the effort has raised more than $1 million for Hasbro Children’s. In addition, Dunkin’ has also sponsored the hospital’s annual Heroes Ball and Radiothon, helped organize large-scale outings to participate in the daily Good Night Lights signaling tradition in downtown Providence, and encouraged their employees to volunteer at other hospital events. To date, Dunkin’ has pledged almost $2 million in support of the Every Child, Every Day campaign – which includes a recent commitment of $750,000. A portion of their new pledge will support the Healing Arts Fund and the remaining donation will be allocated to the Renovations Fund.

Iced Coffee Day 2019

“At just about any Dunkin’ location you walk into, you’ll find a crew member, a manager, a franchisee or a guest whose life has been positively impacted by the amazing people at Hasbro Children’s Hospital,” Rob explains. “That’s a testament to the lifesaving work that happens there day in and day out, and it’s the reason why we at Dunkin’ are so proud to do what we can to support them.” As a thank you for their tremendous support, the emergency department waiting area at Hasbro Children’s will be dedicated to Dunkin’. “We see that honor as a symbol of our longstanding partnership with Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and we’re grateful for the recognition,” Rob says. “But I hope it also shows that we are wholeheartedly committed to building upon this relationship for years to come.”

THE BALL WAS CANCELED, BUT THE SUPPORT CONTINUED!

I

n late February, final preparations were underway for Hasbro Children’s 2020 Heroes Ball, which was scheduled to take place March 7 at the Rhode Island Convention Center. At the same time, COVID-19 first appeared in our state. Much was unknown about the virus during those early weeks. However, it was clear the best decision for the safety and well-being of the community was to cancel the event. Despite not gathering in person, many supporters of the event—including our presenting sponsors, CVS Health and IGT—decided to donate their sponsorship funds, knowing the hospital needed them. Collectively, this overwhelming display of generosity from businesses and individuals resulted in nearly $940,000 being raised for the most critical needs of the hospital.

The ball’s fund-a-need focus for the night of the event was to be the pediatric hematology/oncology program, which provides the highest level of care at every phase of illness and recovery to pediatric and young adult patients with blood disorders or cancer. Caring for children with these conditions is a complex, protracted process, as disease recurrence and treatment-related issues can result in long-term protocols, therapies, and follow-up. Thanks to many generous donors, including an anonymous donor who pledged to match $100,000 in donations for the fund-a-need, the program raised nearly $200,000. Visit giving.lifespan.org/ Hasbro/FAN to view the inspiring fund-a-need video. The Heroes Ball is the largest annual fundraiser to benefit the state’s only pediatric hospital; last year’s event raised more than $1.14 million. Event chairs Deanna and Scott Donnelly and co-chairs Melisa Verrecchia and Andy Marr are looking forward to coming back bigger and better for the 2021 event!

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

T

here’s never been a more striking example than the COVID-19 pandemic of why local hospitals are essential to our communities.

Throughout this crisis, Rhode Island Hospital, in coordination with its pediatric division, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, has blazed the way—for our state and nation—with exceptional talent and a clear voice of leadership. Our hospitals will forever be defined by the way they rose to this extraordinary moment in history and achieved a new level of excellence. As Chairman of the Rhode Island Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees, I am honored to also support Hasbro Children’s and to work alongside the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Leadership Council. The council members give tirelessly of their time and talents to help build a better tomorrow for Rhode Island’s children. Thank you, one and all. And now, please meet two of our newest ambassadors, Melisa Verrecchia and Jaclyn LeiblCote, for whom giving is truly a family affair.

MEET MELISA VERRECCHIA

M

elisa Verrecchia grew up in a family steeped in the values of giving.

“My dad would tell us kids that if you are fortunate enough to be in a position to give back to your community, you have a duty to do so,” says Melisa, the third of Alfred J. and Geraldine Verrecchia’s four children. Al is the retired CEO and Chairman of Hasbro, Inc., and a former Chairman of the Lifespan Board of Directors. Today, the mom of a 9-year-old girl and stepmom of a 9-year-old boy is carrying on the legacy of her parents by supporting organizations near and dear to their hearts—Hasbro Children’s Hospital, Bradley Hospital, and Adoption Rhode Island.

Melisa Verrecchia with fiancé Andy Marr

Melisa earned her bachelor’s degree in creative writing from Emerson College and enjoyed a decade-long career forecasting trends as a senior market analyst in the Los Angeles fashion industry. Now in her 40s, creativity and forward thinking inform her work on the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Leadership Council, which she joined in 2019. “My goal is to help figure out how to ease the next generation of potential funders into giving and find innovative ways for them to do so, such as text-to-give,” says Melisa, who served on the Heroes Ball Committee last year. She and fiancé Andy Marr were co-chairs of this year’s event, which was canceled due to COVID-19. “I want to engage people who do not have deep pockets but are socially conscious and want to be involved in the hospital,” says Melisa, adding with a chuckle, “I can be pretty persuasive.”

MEET JACLYN LEIBL-COTE

J

aclyn Leibl-Cote’s passion for travel has taken her around the world. New Zealand, Peru, and Kenya are among her favorite destinations. But she’s equally passionate about her deep roots in Rhode Island and her family’s longstanding dedication to the community.

“Giving back is the way I grew up. It’s what I learned from my grandparents and my mom and dad. It’s in my DNA as a Sullivan,” says Jaclyn, president of Collette Tours. Her granddad, Dan Sullivan Sr., bought the travel company from founder Jack Collette in 1962; dad Dan Sullivan Jr. took the reins in 1990, and Jaclyn assumed the presidency in 2018. The global company, based in Pawtucket, is a longtime and generous partner of Hasbro Children’s Hospital as well as other Lifespan affiliates.

Jaclyn Leibl-Cote

Last year, Jaclyn deepened her commitment to the health and well-being of the region’s youngest generation by joining the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Leadership Council. She also served on the Heroes Ball 2020 committee, which was canceled due to COVID-19. “Every child deserves a healthy future,” she says. “If we can have a positive influence on kids and provide opportunities for them to live their best lives, that’s very powerful. I’m excited to be a part of that.” A lifelong Rhode Islander, Jaclyn graduated from the University of Rhode Island and earned her MBA from Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She and husband Christian Leibl-Cote have twin 9-year-old sons and a 7-year-old daughter. Jaclyn also serves on the boards of the UCAP School and Crossroads Rhode Island.

EMPLOYEES SUPPORT CAMPAIGN TO RENOVATE HOSPITAL

Employee donor recognition mural on hospital cafeteria windows designed by local artist Pasqualina Luzzi.

E

mployees at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and across the Lifespan system are helpers. No matter what their title is, if they’re a front line caregiver or a support staff member, or in an administrative office, wanting to help is part of health care workers’ DNA. And when helpers come together, wonderful things happen – like the success of the employee giving effort to raise money for the Every Child, Every Day campaign. In 1994, more than 2,000 employees collectively donated more than $1 million to support the historic undertaking of building the state’s first and only children’s hospital. Twenty-six years later, Hasbro Children’s Hospital remains a beacon of hope for children and families in need of medical care in our region, and once again employees came together to show their support for the revitalization of some of the most important areas in the hospital. The healing environment is a point of pride for our care teams, who are the first to greet patients at the hospital. It is also another reason for employees to invest in this important campaign. “Many of us who work at Hasbro Children’s feel very connected to the hospital, and when you feel part ownership in something, you want to support it. That’s why I supported the campaign,” says pediatric emergency department Medical

Director Frank Overly, MD. The emergency department is one of the areas being renovated to meet growing volume and patients’ medical-psychiatric needs. (See page 4 for more on renovations.) “There have been many improvements made over the past 20 years but nothing like this,” says Dr. Overly. “It will be nice to have a space that makes a positive first impression on people when they come through the doors, and one for employees to be proud of.” Margaret Prendergast, Programs Administrator in Pediatric Specialties and Satellites, agrees, “I support the campaign because I believe in Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Rhode Island Hospital. I think we do wonderful things here and provide quality patient care. And as with everything, the building needs some ‘sprucing’ up. We have many patients walking our halls and coming to our clinics and they deserve to see it looking sharp.” Dr. Overly and Margaret Prendergast were among the many employees who donated to Every Child, Every Day, raising nearly $800,000 for the employee giving campaign last year.

lthough the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Radiothon will look a little different this year, the event will still be happening. On September 17, 2020, personalities from Cumulus Providence radio stations 92 PRO-FM, Lite Rock 105, 630 WPRO, and Hot 106 will be interviewing patients and families— safely, by phone—to learn about their personal journeys of hope and healing and how they came to rely on Hasbro Children’s for lifesaving care. Their inspiring stories will be shared throughout the broadcast, which airs 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., so we encourage you to tune in throughout the day. Also, a social distancing phone bank manned by volunteers will be held on the Hasbro Children’s campus to make it easy for supporters to call in their one-time or Miracle Maker (monthly donor) gifts during the 12-hour show.

CAN’T WAIT TO DONATE? YOU DON’T HAVE TO! If you’d like to get a head start on your giving, here are three ways you can contribute right now: Call*: 1-855-999-KIDS (5437) Text*: ‘HASBRO’ to 68683 Visit: HCHRADIOTHON.ORG

*Phone and text lines open September 1 to October 1, 2020.

BIG THANK YOU TO OUR SUPPORTERS!

MR. DAVID SCHULLER

A big thank you to East Commerce Solutions and Ed Medeiros, President and CEO for his generous annual support of Radiothon. East Commerce Solutions once again donated $10,000 to be the phone bank sponsor this year!
