elcome to your inaugural issue of Healthy Futures (formerly All for One). We’ve renamed this annual donor publication to better reflect our goal for every child in our care here at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. As a generous supporter of our work, you know that ensuring a healthy future for all children is important. When you read through these pages, you’ll see that Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Bradley Hospital are partnering to simultaneously address both the medical and the psychiatric health care needs of children. Only in Rhode Island do we have two world-class children’s hospitals working together to treat the whole child.
Margaret M. Van Bree, MHA, DrPH President, Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital
Philanthropy continues to fuel much of the groundbreaking research and programs taking place at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. I am proud to share just a few of these heartwarming stories of generosity today. From the Verrecchia Family Foundation’s seven-figure gift to support an outpatient autism clinic, to the Rhode Island Foundation’s grants to better serve two of our most vulnerable pediatric populations, we consider ourselves fortunate to have so many committed individuals, businesses, and foundations supporting our work and caring about the health and well-being of our kids. Thank you for your continued and unwavering support.
W
hen we made the decision to become pediatric physicians, we were driven by the imperative to improve and ensure the health of children so they can live happy and fulfilling lives. That thinking is what drives us to do our best for our patients, their families, and the broader community, each and every day. Hasbro Children’s Hospital is fortunate to have an engaged family of supporters who help provide vital resources for our programs, both large and small. Together, we are making a life-changing difference in the delivery of health care to infants, toddlers, adolescents, teens, and young adults. The Honor Roll of Supporters in this issue of Healthy Futures is just one way for us to thank you for all you’ve done to help make Hasbro Children’s Hospital the preeminent pediatric medical home for so many children in our region. Thank you for being part of this very special list and for caring about our kids.

Building Brighter Futures for Kids is a Verrecchia Family Affair Children’s Hospital, holding and comforting infants and reading to toddlers. For decades, Gerrie and Al have worked tirelessly to build brighter futures for the children of Rhode Island and beyond. Now, with a $1 million gift from the Verrecchia Family Foundation, the couple hopes to open new horizons of possibility for children struggling with both mental illness and autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities. “We’ve seen the progress that can be made for children through early intervention and treatment,” says Gerrie. “Not every child has access to the services they need, but our wish is that every child will someday.”

“
hildren have been very good to us,” say Al and Gerrie Verrecchia. “And because we have been so fortunate, it’s important to us to give back to the children in our community.” Al and Gerrie’s ties to our hospitals run deep. Al is the retired CEO and Chairman of Hasbro Inc., a company with a long history of support for Bradley Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. He served 32 years on the board and advisory council of the two pediatric hospitals combined, including six years as Bradley’s chairman. He also served 16 years on Lifespan’s Board of Directors, 10 as chair. Gerrie has been a longtime volunteer at Hasbro

The Verrecchia family’s generosity will expand muchneeded capacity at the Bradley Center for Autism and Developmental Disabilities (CADD) Outpatient Clinic. The gift will enhance case management, including a focus on issues surrounding transition to adulthood. It will also capitalize on the specialized expertise at Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Bradley Hospital to advance research into the genetic causes and clinical treatment of co-occurring mental health issues in children on the autism spectrum. Karen Cammuso, PhD, Clinical Director of the CADD Outpatient Clinic, says the Verrecchias’ gift will deliver indispensable services to children with autism spectrum disorder as well as a psychiatric condition. “Children with autism or other developmental disabilities have four to five times the rate of psychiatric symptoms as the general population of
children,” Dr. Cammuso explains. “We see a lot of depression and anxiety as well as mood disorders among our patients. Ours is a uniquely specialized program that not only treats the child but provides family therapy and parent training in behavior and medication management.”
“Not every child has access to the services they need, but our wish is that every child will someday.” —Gerrie Verrecchia “You have to address the problems of today, but you can’t stop there. You have to think about the challenges that lie ahead tomorrow as well,” says Al. “Kids need programs that will provide for their needs. By investing in this new program, we hope that years from now kids with autism and co-occurring mental health challenges will lead happy, meaningful, and productive lives in the community.”
Throughout Lifespan, Al and Gerrie Verrecchia inspire heartfelt appreciation for their generosity and steadfast commitment to improving the lives of children in Rhode Island and beyond. “The Verrecchias are the heart and soul of our hospitals. They have always gone the extra mile for the children in our care,” says Timothy J. Babineau, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of Lifespan. “Al not only has served on our boards, he’s chaired them. Gerrie not only visited our young patients, she’s held them in her arms. Rhode Island is very lucky that the Verrecchias are here.” “Al and Gerrie have shaped who we are today,” says Margaret M. Van Bree, MHA, DrPH, President of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “Now, with their tremendous gift for the CADD Outpatient Clinic, they will help shape who we are tomorrow—a pediatric powerhouse focused on delivering integrated medical and psychiatric care. The entire Lifespan family is grateful that the Verrecchias are by our side. We will cherish their friendship always.”

Beth and Michael Huber Pay It Forward “Most of what we support is related to children,” explains Beth, who recently joined the Rhode Island Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees. “I believe in the building block theory: the stronger the base, the stronger the tree. We have to invest in the future of children and this was an easy shift to pediatrics.” Today, the Hubers have made a generous unrestricted gift to pediatric health care in Rhode Island as Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Bradley Hospital position themselves for the future. By combining their worldclass strengths to address the biggest challenges facing children’s health today, the hospitals are focused on delivering integrated medical and psychiatric care.
Beth and Michael Huber
B
eth Huber and her husband Michael have modest roots. Beth, born and raised in Pawtucket, was one of seven children; her father was a school speech pathologist. Michael grew up with three siblings in East Providence. His father, a war veteran, worked as a steel worker; his mother was an office manager. Beth remembers going to the Samuels Sinclair Dental Center as a child for free dental care. “My parents couldn’t afford to take seven kids to the dentist,” she recalls. While the couple wasn’t always in a position to donate financially, they engaged in other ways. “Early on we were civically involved, donating our time to the town, the library, and schools,” explains Michael. Married 35 years and the parents of Michael Jr., Beth and Michael are now both successful small business owners. They feel a great responsibility to help others and feel fortunate to be able to do so financially.
6
“I don’t think people realize how important it is to support initiatives in childhood mental health and obesity,” explains Beth. “If we don’t get a handle on children’s health when they’re young, the problem only gets worse later on.” Beth and Michael include their son in everything they do and hope to instill in him the same values they learned growing up. “Despite not having a lot of money growing up, my parents found ways to give. Now, I think it’s our responsibility to pay it forward,” says Beth. “I hope we can be an example for Michael Jr. and for our family and friends.”

Family’s Loss Inspires Hope
T
ony Russo, Jr. was 20 years old—a young dad full of life—when he was diagnosed with cancer. Just days later, he passed away.
Tony’s family was crushed by his death. But now, 28 years after their tragic loss, the Russo family is hoping to turn their lasting heartbreak into something positive. They recently made a gift of $100,000 to Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Tony’s memory. “Tony was a wild man,” remembers his father Anthony, “but would’ve given the shirt off his back to a stranger.” His sister Danielle recalls, “He was so excited to be a dad,” referring to the one-and-ahalf year old son who survived him. That little boy, Tony III, is now 29. He doesn’t remember his father but recalls the many stories he’s heard, including the one of the funeral procession being so long the state police had to close Interstate 95. The Russo family doesn’t have first-hand experience with the hospital, but knows hundreds of children and families rely on it daily, and they hope their support will go a long way in bringing comfort to others. Their donation will help refresh and upgrade emergency department facilities with the most advanced medical

equipment and comforts of home, including the Clinical Decision Unit in the ED dedicated to patients who may not need admission but are not ready to go home. In recognition of the family’s gift, the nursing station in the unit will bear Tony’s name. Anthony explains, “The hospital is set up to take the pressure off of families going through a rough period; something as simple as the art on the walls can make families more comfortable during their difficult time.” The Russos’ hope is that their support will in some way help to ease the pain for patients and families. “It’s hard to grow up without a parent,” says Tony III, “There are a lot of emotions, but being able to help other people with this donation gives me something to hold onto.” Anthony adds, “It’s not about how much money one gives; it’s about what’s possible when a bunch of people give that makes a difference. If we can help just one child or one family, it helps make the pain of our loss just a little easier to handle.”

Rhode Island Foundation Improves the Lives of Ocean State Kids
T
wo grants to Hasbro Children’s Hospital from the Rhode Island Foundation will help improve the lives of some of the state’s most vulnerable children. One award will increase clinic hours for children in foster care; the other will update technology to treat kids at risk of blindness. The state’s largest funder of the nonprofit sector, the Rhode Island Foundation celebrated its one-hundredth anniversary in 2016 with a banner year of giving—a record $45 million in grants made to more than 1,600 local nonprofits, according to the Foundation. Lifespan hospitals were the grateful recipients of six of those
8
grants, including the two to Hasbro Children’s Hospital totaling $99,000. “Ensuring everyone has access to the care they need in order to live healthy lives is one of our top priorities. By encouraging delivery in new, creative ways, we can make a significant difference in the lives of everyone served by these grants,” says Larry Warner, the Rhode Island Foundation’s grant maker in the health sector. The first grant will help expand our Fostering Health Program to meet the special health needs of at least 100 more foster children than we are currently caring for. The program provides a timely, comprehensive, family-
centered medical home to any foster child who does not have a primary care provider. As a result of this grant, the program will be able to expand its office hours and care coordination efforts, as well as provide direct access to behavioral health services. “We serve an extremely vulnerable population with complex needs,” says Colleen Deems, NP, who codirects the Fostering Health Clinic with Hasbro Children’s pediatrician Carol Lewis, MD. “And the need for services is growing. We are seeing an influx of infants and younger children entering the foster care system because of the growing opioid epidemic.” Despite the trauma many foster children experience, their resilience is awe-inspiring, says Colleen. “These children are so welcoming and accepting of love. Many have moved around a lot and have issues with attachment. But at the clinic, they get consistent, ongoing support and engagement. It helps them move forward and see a future of possibilities for themselves.”
conditions such as congenital malformation of the eye socket.” Dr. Chen notes that children in Rhode Island’s refugee population may suffer from eye disease or trauma that is rarely seen in the United States, such as rubellainduced cataracts. Equipment funded by the Rhode Island Foundation has made it easier to treat these cases. “The Foundation helped us get off the ground,” says Dr. Chen. “We are able to provide more services and highly specialized ophthalmic testing, thanks to their help.” “These new grants further our efforts to ensure the health and limitless future of every child. We are deeply grateful for the Foundation’s ongoing partnership and friendship,” says Margaret M. Van Bree, MHA, DrPH, President of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
Colleen adds, “The Rhode Island Foundation’s support is so impactful for these vulnerable children because it has enabled us to treat the whole patient, addressing their medical needs while also being mindful of and equipped to treat the mental health issues that result from abuse and neglect.” The second grant, made through the Foundation’s Program for the Blind, will help Hasbro Children’s pediatric ophthalmology clinic purchase imaging equipment to document, treat, and monitor the progression of retina and optic nerve abnormalities— major causes of blindness in children. The eye clinic serves almost 4,000 children annually, many of whom are among the neediest in our community. “We started the pediatric ophthalmology clinic in 2013 and it’s grown rapidly,” says Wendy Chen, MD, PhD, Director of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “We provide everything from routine vision screening to highly complex care of Colleen Deems, NP, with patient

Chaired by Grace and Robert Vincent, Executive Vice President of Administrative Services and External Relations for IGT, the evening began with a cocktail reception and then moved to the ballroom. Once settled at their tables, guests were treated to performers Molly Wren, 13, and Thomas Simonetti, 12, who sang a rendition of Mariah Carey’s Hero. After thunderous applause for the young singers, Margaret M. Van Bree, MHA, DrPH, President of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, addressed guests. “We would not be the hospital we are today without all of you, our heroes. For all that you do for our patients and families, for our hospital and for our community, you have my deepest gratitude.” Dr. Van Bree was joined on stage by 5-year-old Kyrie White, the hospital’s 2016-2017 Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Champion Child. A patient since birth, Kyrie is spending the year highlighting the hospital’s work nationally, as an ambassador for funding pediatric care and research.

UEMF’s Generosity Helps Position Emergency Department for the Future
O
n a recent afternoon, there were four or five people in the waiting room of the Hasbro Children’s Hospital emergency department. It was quiet. At least in the waiting room. “Our goal is to keep the waiting room empty,” says Frank Overly, MD, Medical Director of Hasbro Children’s emergency department. “Thanks to improved flow, patients are seeing providers within 30 minutes of walking through the door. Our goal is to reduce this to below 25 minutes.” Built for 36,000 patients a year, the ED at Hasbro Children’s Hospital—the only pediatric emergency department and Level 1 trauma center in the state— experienced more than 53,000 visits in 2016. To address the challenges of increased patient volume, the ED is engaged in ongoing renovations and improvements to ensure the most efficient delivery of exceptional emergency care.
A gift of $250,000 from the University Emergency Medicine Foundation (UEMF) will go a long way toward positioning the ED to meet the varied and increasingly complex emergency medical needs of children in the region, including an influx of kids with urgent psychiatric problems. “The emergency department at Hasbro Children’s Hospital is a regional treasure,” says Brian Zink, MD, President of the UEMF. “Thankfully, the majority of cases seen in the ED are not critical in nature. But the community knows that in a real crisis, the Hasbro Children’s ED will deliver the highly specialized care their children need.” UEMF, which is a nonprofit, comprises academic emergency physicians who provide care in the EDs at Hasbro Children’s, Rhode Island, The Miriam, and Newport hospitals. Dr. Zink serves as the hospitals’ Chief of Emergency Medicine. Changes designed to help decompress the busy Hasbro Children’s emergency department include a six-bed clinical decision unit for kids who need to be observed but not necessarily admitted, and a four-bed rapid treatment unit for low-acuity cases. Families and staff alike appreciate the enhanced efficiencies, but the work is far from over. “Investing in the ED makes it a better place to work, which makes it a better place to receive care. And the reverse of that is true, too,” says Dr. Overly. Dr. Zink says the UEMF’s support for modernizing the Hasbro Children’s ED is a “win-win” situation. Or as Dr. Overly puts it, “Anything that makes patients happier makes doctors happier.”

A Loving Gift Leaves a Lasting Legacy
I
t’s been just over a year since the passing of John J. Bert, MD, from an aggressive form of cancer. The eldest of four siblings and an accomplished OB-GYN surgeon with OB-GYN Associates, part of the Women’s Medicine Collaborative at Lifespan, he dedicated his life to caring for others. To honor his memory and further deepen their family’s commitment to the health and well-being of our community, John’s widow, Teresa Bert, NP, along with his brother, Arthur A. Bert, MD, and wife Catherine, recently made a $100,000 gift to Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “John took care of patients his entire adult life and this gift is a way for him to continue impacting lives,” says Teresa. “Not only was he a brilliant physician, he was caring and gentle and his patients adored him.” Before his illness, John often spoke with his brother Arthur about the pride he felt delivering the babies of the children he delivered decades ago. Paying homage to this legacy of caring for the next generation is what the Bert family gift is all about. Dedicating it to Hasbro Children’s was the obvious choice as the hospital
positions itself to address the most critical challenges in children’s health care that lie ahead. “I’m half the doctor my brother was and I know he’s smiling down on us, knowing we’re providing his colleagues in pediatrics with the additional resources they need to do what they do best,” says Dr. Bert, who recently retired as Anesthesiologist-in-Chief of Lifespan. “As physicians, we’re central to the operation of hospitals. As a result, I feel we have a deep responsibility to give back to the institutions we serve. John educated hundreds of residents, and with this donation we’re helping to continue his life’s work. He’d be the first to tell you how important it is to have a world-class pediatric hospital like we have here in Hasbro Children’s Hospital.” “Supporting Hasbro Children’s is part of our healing process, but it also brings John’s work full circle,” adds Teresa. “We hope it sets an example others will follow. My husband was an incredibly humble man whose memory will live on by caring for children. I know that would make him happy.”

Inspired by the firsthand experiences of families that define the work of Hasbro Children’s Hospital, a community of listeners across Rhode Island and nearby Connecticut and Massachusetts came together to donate $403,583 in support of patient care, lifesaving programs, and research.
“The incredible outpouring of generosity from our community was not only amazing, but will have a tremendous impact on the lives of our patients and their families,” said Margaret M. Van Bree, MHA, DrPH, President of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. “On behalf of all who depend on our hospital, my deepest thanks to Cumulus Providence and all the sponsors who made the Radiothon possible and gave people an opportunity to support our lifesaving work.”
Now in its thirteenth year, the Radiothon is a partnership between Cumulus Providence radio stations (92 PRO-FM, Lite Rock 105, News Talk 630 & 99.7 WPRO, and Hot 106) and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, a member of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. The event was broadcast live from the
Listeners also followed the Radiothon through its Facebook page, where they were able to “meet” some of the families sharing their stories and view photos in real-time. Patients on-site at the Radiothon were treated to face-painting and other fun activities between interviews.
“Cumulus Providence is proud to partner with Hasbro Children’s Hospital on the annual Radiothon; our listeners and advertisers are incredibly generous in support of this important cause,” said Holly Paras, Market Manager for Cumulus Providence. “Hasbro Children’s Hospital touches vast numbers of people and families in southern New England, and by working together, we’re helping to make a difference in the lives of children across our community.” Among the sponsors and supporters of the 2017 Hasbro Children’s Hospital Radiothon, many of whom matched gifts during special “power hours” and volunteered to answer calls, were Alex and Ani Charity by Design; Alexander’s Uniforms; Chelo’s Hometown Bar & Grille; Cox Business; Dunkin’ Donuts; East Commerce Solutions, Inc.; Hasbro, Inc.; Jordan’s Furniture; Lamar; Marshall Building & Remodeling Company; Murray Outdoor Communications; National Guard Association of Rhode Island; Pepsico Foodservice; Providence Auto Body; Rhode Island Monthly; Rhode Island Public Transit Authority; David D. A Message from the Foundation
I
often find myself thinking about the lives our hospital has touched since opening in 1994. Many of our earliest patients are now parents themselves and they too have come to rely on Hasbro Children’s Hospital. This multigenerational connection is a tribute to our community’s unwavering trust in the care we deliver and is also a high compliment we take quite seriously. But our multigenerational connections extend beyond our patients. Jim Gilbane, a founding member of the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Advisory Council who is profiled here, has a family history with our hospital that dates back more than 120 years! Members of the Advisory Council (see listing on page 22) are community leaders, giving freely of their time, talent, and expertise to help shape our work today and for the future.
Roger Begin Chair, Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees
On behalf of the patients and families we care for, and the entire Foundation Board of Trustees, my sincerest thanks to our Advisory Council members for all they do to support our hospital and our community.
Meet Jim Gilbane
J
im is a principal and Director of Corporate Security for Gilbane Building Company. Starting in 1895, his great-grandfather, William Gilbane, built the first of many facilities the company would erect for Rhode Island Hospital, including Hasbro Children’s Hospital. More than five years ago, Jim deepened the Gilbane family’s connection when he became a founding member of the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Advisory Council. “We’re blessed to have one of the country’s best children’s hospitals in our backyard,” says Jim. “It provides an incredible service to our community.” Jim has vivid memories of going to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital ED in the middle of the night with his own children, trips that became necessary for various sports injuries and a broken leg as they grew up. He’ll never forget the care his family received—the same compassionate care his fellow Gilbane employees and those across our region receive each day. On the advisory council, Jim helps wherever he’s needed, whether lending his feedback or advice, or as an advocate in the community. While already familiar with the hospital through personal experience, Jim calls his service on the council “eye-opening” for the sheer depth and breadth of services available to patients and their families. “Between all Hasbro Children’s Hospital does for our community and my family’s long-term relationship with the hospital, I couldn’t have been happier to join the council and give back,” says Jim.

Give the Gift of Health and Be a Hero
N
othing is more fulfilling than healing a sick or injured child. At Hasbro Children’s Hospital, we have a team of dedicated physicians, caretakers, and donors who make it possible to provide each and every patient with the very best medical care in an environment that nurtures and supports not just the child but the entire family. Everyone involved is a hero in our eyes. That is why we call our giving society that recognizes individuals who make an annual gift of $250 or more, Heroes for Hasbro. Through Heroes for Hasbro, you can direct your support to one of our top four 2017 funding needs:
Heroes for Hasbro A Giving Society for Hasbro Children’s Hospital
• Child Life Services: helping children understand and cope with their illness or injury; • The Healing Arts Program: providing a full range of visual arts, music literacy, and performance programs to comfort and aid in a patient’s care and recovery; • Medical-Legal Partnership: making legal services available to low-income families to resolve issues impeding their health; • Area of Greatest Need: allowing us to respond quickly to the changing needs of health care and provide the highest quality, cutting-edge family- and patient-centered services. The funding priorities in 2016 included Child Life Services, The Lawrence A. Aubin, Sr. Child Protection Program, The Adolescent Leadership Council (TALC), and area of greatest need. These priorities are reviewed annually. When you support Hasbro Children’s Hospital, you make an important difference for children. Thank you for being a hero! To learn more about Heroes for Hasbro, including giving levels and benefits, please visit hasbrochildrenshospital.org/Heroes4Hasbro or contact Karli Blossom at 401-444-0390 or kblossom@lifespan.org.

Spirit Halloween Continues Support with $66,428 Gift
Patients and their families enjoying a special visit from Spirit Halloween volunteers
F
or the sixth year in a row, local Spirit Halloween stores proved there’s much more to October 31 than trick-or-treating, raising $66,428 for Hasbro Children’s Hospital through its Spirit of Children program.
through the Spirit of Children program benefit the hospital’s child life department, which helps provide patients a sense of normalcy during hospitalization by engaging in play, storytelling, arts and crafts, and music.
Beginning six weeks before the spooky day itself, Spirit Halloween’s Spirit of Children program gives customers two ways to support Hasbro Children’s Hospital—through a special 10-percent-off coupon in which Spirit donates the 10 percent back to our hospital, and by associates inviting them to make voluntary donations upon checkout. Funds raised
A few weeks before the holiday, Spirit Halloween also makes a special visit to the hospital for an afternoon of fun with costumes, games, face painting, and crafts for patients and their families to enjoy. Since 2011, Spirit Halloween has raised more than $260,000 for Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
