Message from the President of Newport Hospital Welcome to Newport Hospital’s winter community newsletter.

Inside, you’ll find a wealth of useful information on new physicians, services and events at our hospital, as well as a healthy recipe, dates for our free community lecture series, listings for our support groups and community exercise programs, and more.

This has been a year of investment for Newport Hospital, as our long list of new physicians and services attests. As the only acute care hospital in the area, and the largest provider of outpatient specialty services in Newport County, we see ourselves as an essential community resource. From fundamental services such as primary care and women’s health, to advanced cardiac and cancer care, we are focused on keeping you healthy, and ensuring access to the services you need. The investment we’ve made this year in recruiting skilled physicians and building

expanded services is really an investment in the health of our community, and we’re proud to be able to offer this kind of comprehensive, quality care.

Because we’re a hospital in tight-knit Newport County, many of our employees are also your friends and neighbors, with strong ties to this institution and deep roots in this community.

Newport Hospital Welcomes New Physicians Newport Hospital has welcomed a host of new physicians and providers over the past year. Here’s a quick look at the newest faces to join our medical staff.

Bradford Gray, MD

Julia Tassinari, MD

James Valente, MD

Bradford Gray, MD; Julia Tassinari, MD; and James Valente, MD, general surgeons. Dr. Gray received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his resident training at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Tassinari received her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed her internship and residency at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston. She is board eligible. Dr. Valente received his medical degree from the Tufts University School of Medicine, and completed his residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey. For the past 25 years, he has cared for members of the U.S. military and their families, most recently as head of general surgery at Naval Health Clinic of New England. He is board certified.

Mustapha Kemal, MD, and Josef Fields, DO, physiatrists, Newport Physiatry. Dr. Kemal received his medical degree from King Edward Medical University in Lahore, Pakistan, and completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Hospital Mustapha Kemal, MD Josef Fields, DO of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Dr. Kemal also serves as medical director of the Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center.

Dr. Fields received his medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, Florida. He completed an internship at St. Petersburg General Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, and a residency program in physical medicine and rehabilitation at New York University/ Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine in New York. He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and the American Osteopathic Association, and is board certified in osteopathic medicine.

John Day, MD, and Sam Evans, MD, pulmonologists, Newport Pulmonary Medicine. Dr. Day is a graduate of Cornell University Medical College in New York. He completed his residency at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville and a Sam Evans, MD John Day, MD fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital. Dr. Day is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is board certified in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Dr. Evans received his medical degree from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine in Brooklyn. He completed his residency and a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians, and is board certified in internal and pulmonary medicine.

Lauren Goddard, MD, Family Medicine, Jamestown Family Practice. Dr. Goddard received her medical degree from The Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University, and completed her residency at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket. She is board eligible and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Steve Louvet, DO, Family Medicine, Family Physicians of Newport. Dr. Louvet received his medical degree from Western University of Health Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific.

He completed his post-graduate training at Aria Health in Philadelphia and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He is board certified in emergency and family medicine.

Two new family nurse practitioners joined our family medicine practices: Jana Magarian, APRN-CNP, is practicing with Family Physicians of Newport, and Nancy Jones, APRN-CNP, is practicing with Family Physicians of Tiverton.

Nancy Jones, APRNJana Magarian, APRNCNP CNP Magarian received her master of science in nursing from the University of Rhode Island, and has over 18 years of clinical nursing experience. Jones also received her master of science in nursing from the University of Rhode Island, and has over 25 years of experience in a variety of acute care settings. Both are board certified as family nurse practitioners.

Physician Spotlight Bradford Gray, MD, is one of three new general surgeons at Newport Hospital, offering expertise across a broad range of surgical services.

Q. What drew you to surgery?

A. I love the technical aspects of surgery and the hands-on experience. Frequently, you can see the immediate relief of suffering, and that’s very rewarding.

Q. What are your particular interests within the field?

A. Advanced laparoscopic surgery, thyroid surgery, hernia surgery.

Q. What do you enjoy about practicing medicine in this community?

A. I have two outstanding colleagues with whom I work very closely. This allows for a very unique collaboration which really benefits our patients.

Q. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

A. Family, fishing, photography, boating, golf.

In addition, Timothy Flanigan, MD, Rebecca Reece, MD, Jerome Larkin, MD, and Anne Davidge, PhD, are the team behind the new Lifespan Lyme Disease Center at Newport Hospital.

Timothy Flanigan, MD

Dr. Flanigan received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College in New York, and completed his residency and fellowship training in infectious disease at University Hospital of Pennsylvania. He is a dean’s professor of medical science and professor of medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the Infectious Disease Society of America.

Dr. Reece received her medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, West Virginia, where she also completed her residency. She did a fellowship in

infectious diseases at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University/Rhode Island and The Miriam hospitals, and a post-doctoral research fellowship at The Miriam.

Jerome Larkin, MD

Dr. Larkin received his medical degree from the Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine in Piscataway, New Jersey. He did his residency training at the Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts, and a fellowship in infectious disease at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He is an assistant professor of medicine (clinical) at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He sees pediatric patients at the center.

Dr. Davidge received her PhD from the University of South Carolina, in Columbia, South Carolina. She has over 26 years of experience in providing mental Anne Davidge, PhD health services to both pediatric and adult patients.

She provides behavioral health services, including cognitive behavioral therapy to patients suffering from post-treatment Lyme disease inflammatory syndrome.

Lifespan Lyme Disease Center at Newport Hospital In response to the rising incidence of tick-borne diseases in southern New England, Lifespan and Newport Hospital have launched a multidisciplinary center entirely dedicated to the treatment of Lyme disease and other tickborne illnesses. Our team of infectious disease specialists sees both adult and pediatric patients, and has particular expertise with patients who are coping with post-treatment chronic Lyme disease syndrome. In collaboration with behavioral therapists, physical therapists, nutritionists, rheumatologists, neurologists and more, our center offers these patients an innovative, multi-faceted approach to treatment, with long-term follow-up.

Treatment might include antibiotic therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, physical therapy and nutritional guidance, depending on the patient’s individual needs. Please call the number below for further information, or find us online at lymediseaseri.org.

PRIMARY CARE:

Family Physicians of Newport The physicians and nurse practitioners at Family Physicians of Newport agree: a common draw to the field of family medicine is the appeal of caring for patients of all ages. These practitioners might see three generations of the same family, providing primary care for infants, parents and the elderly, while gaining understanding of their relationships and family history.

Their training includes elements of internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics/ gynecology, geriatrics, and more, with a focus on preventive medicine, or helping the whole family stay healthy.

Laureen Martin, APRN-CNP has been a nurse practitioner in the office for 20 years. “One of the things I love is caring for families through their lifespans, from the two-week-old baby chicks to the 102-year-olds,” she says.

“There are kids I saw at two years old, who are now growing up and graduating and getting jobs. You really feel like you are part of the family.”

Steve Louvet, DO, is the newest physician to join the practice. “That longterm interaction, of being able to walk alongside your patients through their lives, means you get to know them really well,” he says. “And practicing in a small community like Newport means you get to know the other providers as well. Both things improve access to care for our patients.”

With the addition of Dr. Louvet and nurse practitioner Jana Magarian, APRN-CNR, the providers at Family Physicians of Newport now include two nurse practitioners and two physicians. The office is accepting new patients, and is also offering new Saturday hours, from 8 a.m. to noon.

What is physiatry?

Physiatry is a branch of medicine emphasizing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the nerves, muscles, bones and brain that may produce a temporary or permanent impairment. Physiatrists are doctors who have completed training in the medical specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation, with expertise ranging from neurology to physical and occupational therapy and pain management.

They focus on a broad spectrum of disabilities, including the long-term rehabilitation process for patients with: • A spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, cancer or neuromuscular disorders.

• Recovery from back and neck pain, arthritis, osteoporosis and sports injuries.

What do physiatrists do?

Physiatrists play an important role in treating illnesses or physical injuries that affect how you move with the aim of getting you moving again—helping to reduce your pain and enhancing your body’s performance after an injury.

They assess your condition and recovery from a broader perspective— looking at the whole body and focusing on taking the steps necessary to help get you back to normal.

Instead of focusing on one part of the body, a comprehensive treatment program centers around the process of putting a person’s life back together medically, socially, emotionally and vocationally after an injury or illness.

Treatments can be performed by the patients themselves or with the help of a team of medical professionals—from speech pathologists to physical therapists.

Kelly’s Story Kelly Sullivan lives in Ashaway, Rhode Island, and works as a home aide for the elderly in Westerly. She is a patient of Dr. Mustapha Kemal, physiatrist and medical director of Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center. Dr. Kemal uses an innovative technique of guided Botox injections to target specific muscle groups in the legs and arms and relax spasticity, helping patients regain flexibility and range of motion. Kelly first saw Dr. Kemal for treatment at a hospital in Connecticut, and found his care so valuable that she followed him to Newport Hospital when he moved his practice here.

“In 2010 I noticed I was having trouble brushing my teeth; I had tremors. At first my doctors in Connecticut thought it was migraines or panic attacks. Finally they did a CT scan and found a cyst in my brain.

I also have cerebral palsy which affects my right side.

I was having a lot of difficulty walking, moving my right leg and arm.

When I found Dr. Kemal, he was unlike any other doctor I knew. He suggested Botox injections to help relax the muscles that were in spasm.

Before treatment, I can barely put my right foot on the floor. After, it almost feels completely normal, I can walk across the room.

When I found Dr. Kemal, he was unlike any other doctor I knew.

He is so committed, such a kind man, with the best bedside manner.

He really goes above and beyond for his patients. He takes his time, gets you answers to your questions. I didn’t want to have to use a walker or a cane, I’m too young! He has made such a difference for me—his treatments make me feel 90 percent better almost immediately.

I can walk, I can go to work. I’d follow him anywhere.”

Food for Thought Healthy Recipes from Newport Hospital

Spinach, Feta, Olives and Whole Wheat Pasta Ingredients (4 servings): • 6 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 cup frozen spinach (defrosted and chopped roughly) • 20 black olives • 2 oz. crumbled feta cheese • 1 lb of whole wheat pasta

Put the pasta water on to boil, adding a generous pinch of salt. Heat the olive oil on medium. Add the garlic and cook about 2 minutes, until it is gold, but not brown. Add the spinach, stir to coat with the olive oil and let cook for 5 minutes.

Add the olives and the feta cheese.

Pour a ¼ cup of the salted pasta water over the sauce and scrape up any bits from the pan. Toss with the whole wheat pasta, and serve.

Per serving: 540 calories 2 vegetables 2 starches

This recipe is based on the work of Mary Flynn, PhD, RD, LDN, a well-known research dietitian with the Lifespan health care system. Flynn has developed a series of recipes made with ingredients that studies have shown can reduce risk factors for chronic diseases. The meals are caloriecontrolled and contain extra virgin olive oil, at least two servings of healthy vegetables, and two to three servings of whole grains or legumes (beans).
