Dear Neighbors, Welcome to the first edition of Newport Hospital’s Door-to-Door newsletter. I’d like to extend a warm invitation for you to attend our first community meeting on Monday, April 17, 2017. The meeting will be in the hospital’s Gudoian Conference Room at 6:30 p.m., and we will be serving light refreshments.

Newport Hospital is committed to being a good neighbor, and I’m pleased to be launching the Door-to-Door newsletter as a new way to communicate with you. The newsletter is delivered to every resident living within 200 yards of Newport Hospital. In addition, we are hand-delivering copies of the newsletter to community organizations and churches within a twomile radius of the hospital campus.

To facilitate better communication, we have also established a “Neighborhood Hotline” telephone number. This is a direct line for neighbors of the hospital to call with neighborhood concerns or questions.

The telephone number is (401) 845-3040; you can also contact us by email at NHneighbors@lifespan.org. Pam Crocker, director of facilities, or Monica Anderson, director of community relations at Lifespan, will answer calls and review messages. If you call during the week, they will respond to you within 48 hours; please allow more time on the weekends.

I hope you’ll take a moment to read through the rest of this newsletter to find out more about Newport Hospital in the neighborhood. We want to get to know you better and we want you to get to know us.

That’s why we’ve included a feature story, “The Heart of Newport Hospital,” which highlights individuals within our organization who make us proud. On page 2, you can read about June Martin and Pamela Crocker: June is a registered nurse who is the Crista Durand recipient of the Press Ganey 2016 Nurse of the Year Award, while Pam is Newport Hospital’s director of facilities. Both women are dedicated to delivering health with care at Newport Hospital. On page three, you’ll find news about our work in the community to further the health and wellness of local residents.

The Heart of Newport Hospital The Heart of Newport Hospital features individuals who exemplify our mission to deliver health with care. The first edition of the Door-to-Door Newsletter features June Martin and Pamela Crocker.

June Martin

June Martin is a registered clinical nurse and 40-year veteran of the Newport Hospital nursing staff. This past year, she was recognized with a prestigious national honor, when she was selected from among 40 finalists across the country as the recipient of the national Press Ganey 2016 Nurse of the Year Award. This award singles out one direct care nurse each year who has made outstanding contributions to his or her organization, demonstrating strong leadership, clinical expertise and exemplary care.

June has long demonstrated strong leadership, clinical expertise, and excellent communication skills while providing exemplary care to her patients. Her expertise and sense of sharing does not end with the nursepatient relationship. June has been invested in the training and orientation of every nurse on her unit for many years. She readily shares her knowledge and skills with all employees and has served as a mentor to many nurses.

It is an honor for Newport Hospital to have such a talented, inspirational, dedicated and compassionate nurse caring for our patients.

Pamela Crocker

Pamela Crocker is the director of facilities services, planning and safety. Pam has been with us since 2015 and led our front entrance renovation this past spring. The project included new sliding doors that offer better access for those with mobility challenges, and lobby climate control for enhanced comfort for patients, visitors and staff. In addition to her duties with our facilities, Pam oversees Newport Hospital’s Emergency Preparedness Committee and our newly revitalized Green Team.

The Newport Hospital Green Team is a group of employees who volunteer to ensure that our hospital is a responsible steward of the environment. The Green Team is tasked to identify projects that reduce waste, facilitate recycling and shrink our carbon footprint. Currently the group is working on a single stream recycling project that aims to increase the hospital’s recycling rate.

You can meet Pam at our community meeting on April 17, 2017 and learn more about our upcoming construction projects and Green Team accomplishments. We are grateful for Pam’s dedication to our hospital in the many areas she oversees.

Dear Neighbors of Newport Hospital,

I’m honored to contribute to this inaugural issue of Newport Hospital’s Door-to-Door Newsletter. This newsletter is just one example of the hospital’s commitment to be a good neighbor. Our approach to neighborhood relations will be something we refer to as the 3 B’s. We will continue the work of building our relationship with the community by increasing our communications with you. We will continue to make the neighborhood and the community a better place by sharing our time, talent and health resources. And we will have a balanced approach toward resolving community concerns and conflicts.

Building our relationship — One way we are building our relationship is through the establishment of the Newport Hospital Neighborhood Hotline. The hotline is a number that neighbors can call with neighborhood concerns, questions and comments. We hope that the hotline will build a bridge for communication with our neighbors when you need to speak with us. The hotline number is (401) 845-3040.

Pamela Crocker or I will be answering the hotline and checking messages daily, and will respond to your call within 48 hours. Please allow more time for a response on weekends.

Making a better place — Did you know that Newport Hospital regularly partners with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Center by donating food to the agency’s Hunger Services program every month? In 2016, Newport Hospital employees donated hundreds of pounds of food to benefit some of Aquidneck Island’s most vulnerable community members. In addition, our employees generously donate school supplies in the fall and toys and warm winter items each holiday season for distribution to local children and families at the MLK Center. It’s all part of our commitment to delivering health with care and being a good neighbor.

A BalanceD approach — Our employees are dedicated to respecting our neighborhood. The neighborhood hotline will enable us to improve our efforts by responding to your calls and concerns. Our commitment to have a balanced approach includes regularly informing our neighbors when we anticipate construction activities or other hospital activities which may impact the neighborhood. We plan to hold at least two community meetings a year, where neighbors can learn of our plans and needs.

Did you know?

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center was incorporated in 1922 as the Newport Community Center to provide recreational activities for community residents, and was renamed in honor of Dr. King in June of 1968.

The founders were a group of trustees of the Newport Historical Society.

News about the Lifespan Cancer Institute To publicly celebrate and recognize our strengths in cancer care and research, Lifespan has made the bold move of changing the name of its cancer programs and treatment at all Lifespan hospitals and outpatient centers, including here at Newport Hospital. The new name is the Lifespan Cancer Institute.

Lifespan began a major initiative to expand and enhance cancer services nearly three years ago. At Newport Hospital, the cancer center has added a second full time medical oncologist, and a nurse navigator, who

provides support with everything from the financial and emotional aspects of cancer to explaining medication, coordinating appointments, and more. Most recently, Lifespan announced a new strategic alliance with the DanaFarber Cancer Institute in Boston, which will provide new expertise for rare and complex cancers, and expanded access to clinical trials.
