SEDENTARY BEHAVIOR LINKED TO CHANGES IN BRAIN HEALTH & MEMORY Researchers from the University of California Los Angeles have conducted a preliminary study that recruited 35 people ages 45 to 75 and tracked their physical activity levels and number of hours per day spent sitting over a number of weeks. Using high-resolution MRI scans, researchers found that the sedentary behavior was a significant predictor of thinning in the medial temporal lobe (MTL), a region of the brain involved in the formation of new memories. Even periods of high level exercise were not enough to offset the effects of sitting for long periods of time. Although this study does not show absolute proof that too much sitting causing thinning brain areas, it is important to note that MTL thinning has already been associated as a precursor to cognitive decline and dementia in middle-aged and older adults. More research is needed to help determine the exact role of sedentary behavior on brain health and the risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Making efforts to move more each day in addition to planned exercise remains vital to ensuring optimal health for body, mind and spirit..

FEATURED RECIPE OF THE MONTH Balsamic Strawberry Asparagus Author: Diana Johnson as showcased on Eating Richly at www.eatingrichly.com Ingredients & Materials Needed: • Baking sheet • Foil • Small saucepan • 1 pound of asparagus spears • 1Tbsp. olive oil • 1 cup balsamic vinegar • 20 medium sized fresh strawberries, sliced • 10 fresh basil leaves, chopped or sliced • Salt & pepper to taste Instructions: 1) Preheat oven to 400ºF and line a baking sheet with foil. 2) Place the asparagus spears out on the baking sheet and drizzle with the olive oil. Roast in the oven for 8-10 minutes (or until tender). 3) While the asparagus is roasting, boil the balsamic vinegar until reduced down to about ¼ cup of balsamic “syrup”. 4) Once the asparagus is done roasting, remove from the oven and divide among the serving plates. Top with the sliced strawberries, basil and salt & pepper (to taste). Use a spoon to drizzle the reduced balsamic vinegar syrup over each asparagus serving & enjoy!
