nd finally, we pause. The much-anticipated ‘footy frenzy’ is in the books and this weekend’s round 13 will start with what is a return to traditional values – Friday night football – and will come after an entire 72-hour period during which no games were played. But it won’t be too normal for too long. Round 14 will start next Thursday evening and over the following 19 days, four more rounds will be completed. The match-ups for round 18 have been finalised, but dates, times and venues will be announced in the days before. It has been an exhaustive time. Geelong knocked over five games in 18 days. Collingwood played five games in 20 days, but criss-crossed the country at the same time. Team selection was fascinating and, more than ever, the word ‘managed’ became part of the footy lexicon. In some cases it might have been a cover for dropping a player who was out of form, but in most cases there was a recognition that, while the cramming of games was an absolute necessity in order to get the season away, two games in a u One of the saddest parts
of the 2020 season is that we have been unable to celebrate some of the great occasions and events that connect footy to our everyday life. The traditional Anzac Day clash between Collingwood and Essendon never eventuated, nor did the Anzac Eve battle between Melbourne and Richmond which has been
week was a bridge too far for some players. And fair enough. The team that has emerged in the best form from the first footy frenzy might be Geelong. The Cats have won four of their past five games and sit in third place, a game behind Port Adelaide and Brisbane, but their percentage (138.5) is comfortably the best in the competition. They could not have been more impressive last week, beating fourth-placed St Kilda by 59 points before backing up four days later to knock over the ladder-leading Power by 60 points. Much about footy has changed, but there remains one constant. If you have a power forward, clear out the forward line and give him space – and with five goals against the Saints and six against a welcome addition to the calendar in recent seasons. Important awareness games such as Maddie’s Match and Big Freeze at the ’G have also taken a back seat given there is no football action in Victoria. But a big tick to the AFL for sending the annual Dreamtime at the ’G match between Essendon and Richmond to Darwin for what should be
an important celebration of indigenous culture and life on Saturday night. It will be the centerpiece game of Sir Doug Nicholls Round. It also gave the AFL Record team the chance to look at the important role the Northern Territory has played in providing indigenous talent. Picking “best ever” lists is always fraught with danger but
with the help of local media commentator Charlie King, senior writer ASHLEY BROWNE has included Andrew McLeod, Cyril Rioli, Maurice Rioli, Michael Long and Michael McLean in the top five NT indigenous players of all time. We’d be interested in your thoughts. The round also celebrates the wonderful contribution of former Carlton star Syd Jackson. AFL.com.au AFL RECORD 5

ONE WEEK at a TIME CAN THEY COME BACK?: The Giants tumbled from the eight after being thrashed by cross-town rival Sydney last week.
Port, Tom Hawkins is enjoying a wonderful season. With Sam Menegola and Cameron Guthrie also experiencing career-best seasons, a backline that has conceded more than 10 goals on only three occasions, and Gary Ablett due back into their Queensland hub any day now, the Cats find themselves deep in the premiership race. Meanwhile, it might be time to draw a line through two of this year’s premiership fancies, Collingwood and the GWS Giants. The Magpies remain in the eight, but appear to be in deep strife. They haven’t really gelled
this year and have been beset by injuries and related absences for much of the season. Jeremy Howe (knee), Adam Treloar (hamstring) and Jordan De Goey (finger) are unlikely to play again before the finals and the Pies will be desperately hoping the AFL schedules a pre-finals bye to give this important trio an extra week to get themselves fit. Not that it might help. Collingwood was thrashed by 56 points by Melbourne last Saturday. It was as poor as we have seen the Pies for some time. Still, they might be going better than the Giants, who were

peedy Melbourne small forward Kysaiah Pickett had two reasons to celebrate recently. The first came with his round 11 nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star Award, which followed his 12 disposals, two marks, three tackles and an impressive goal in the 57-point win against North Melbourne at Adelaide Oval. His speed, agility and presence around the goals came to the fore in the win that helped turn Melbourne’s fortunes around. Then the Demons announced a contract extension that will keep him at the club until at least the end of 2023. Pickett, the nephew of 1998 Rising Star winner Byron, and cousin of Richmond’s Marlion, was born in Western Australia but raised in South Australia where he played his junior football for Woodville-West Torrens. He is also the nephew of Melbourne teammate Neville Jetta. ASHLEY BROWNE

humiliated by their cross-town rival Sydney last week. GWS kicked just three goals in its 41-point defeat, all from dubious free kicks. The defeat sent the Giants tumbling from the eight and they might struggle to get back in. They are now ensconced in Western Australia with games against West Coast and Fremantle to come. Unlike the Pies, they haven’t been dealt too harsh an injury card, but the issue for Leon Cameron is that many of his big-name players aren’t playing well. Skipper Stephen Coniglio and midfielders Lachie Whitfield and Josh Kelly are struggling, while 2019 Coleman medallist Jeremy Cameron has kicked just 18 goals in 11 games. The battle for the Giants to back up from last year’s Grand Final humiliation is proving all too real.

Dreamtime in Darwin a tribute to NT’s finest
Trailblazer honoured u Former Carlton

ASHLEY BROWNE
here have been 20 matches for premiership points at Darwin’s TIO Stadium since the Western Bulldogs and Port Adelaide christened it as an official AFL venue in 2004. And with no disrespect to those two clubs who have featured heavily there and to Melbourne, which has made the venue a second home since 2013, Saturday night’s Dreamtime game shapes as the most significant AFL game yet played in Australia’s northernmost city. Thanks to Kevin Sheedy, the annual Dreamtime game at the MCG between his first two clubs, Richmond and Essendon, has become one of the landmark games of the AFL fixture each season. But with footy in Melbourne off the radar for the rest of the year because of COVID-19, it left the AFL having to find the next most suitable venue and that’s where TIO Stadium comes into play. It might not be the MCG, but in many respects, the Dreamtime game is coming home. Leading Northern Territory football commentator Charlie King told the AFL Record it will be one of the most memorable nights for the game in Australia’s Top End, with the only disappointment being that health regulations mean there won’t be a capacity crowd. TIO Stadium has a capacity of about 12,500, but AFL officials estimate about 5000 fans will be allowed in to watch the game. “It just means that some of the people who really count the most won’t be able to be there,” King said. Both Richmond and Essendon have enormous support in northern Australia. In the case of the Tigers, it is due to the fantastic playing career of Maurice Rioli, arguably the greatest player to have come from the Northern Territory.
8 AFL RECORD
The 1982 Norm Smith medallist (the first from a losing team) played 118 games for Richmond between 1982 and 1987. With the Bombers, it is self-evident. Kevin Sheedy was the first AFL identity to properly embrace the region and from the early 1980s would bring his Essendon squads to Darwin to play pre-season games. Add the success of Michael Long at Windy Hill and it soon followed that the Bombers became the team of choice for so many Territorians. “The fans will want to turn up just to thank Essendon for coming up here all those years ago,” King said. “We were out of our minds with excitement every time they played. “They should build a statue for Kevin Sheedy for what he’s done for the game up here.” The celebration of the game in the Northern Territory also brings with it the discussion of the greatest indigenous players to come out of the region. Rioli and Long always figure, as does Andrew McLeod, the 340-game Adelaide superstar who won back-to-back Norm Smith Medals in 1997 and 1998. Michael McLean, who played 183 games for the Western Bulldogs and Brisbane between 1983 and 1997, also gets in because as well as being a seriously good footballer, he was something of a trailblazer and one

of the first from the Top End to make it in the then VFL. Territorians are split when it comes to who might round out the list. Old-timers and historians lament David Kantilla is not as well known as he should be. The lanky ruckman was the first NT player to play in the SANFL and won South Adelaide’s best and fairest in 1961 and 1962. The function centre at TIO Stadium is named after him. But the nod goes to Cyril Rioli, the mercurial 189-game Hawthorn small forward who played in four flags and won the 2015 Norm Smith Medal. Apart from Victoria, no state or territory has produced more Norm Smith Medal winners than the Northern Territory.
star and Wongatha man Syd Jackson is the 2020 Sir Doug Nicholls Round honouree. It comes as the Blues open the round with a Friday night clash against Gold Coast at TIO Stadium. Recruited from East Perth, Jackson made his debut in 1969 and played 136 games and kicked 165 goals as a tough, but skilful midfielder. He played in the 1970 and 1972 premiership teams. Jackson was one of the few indigenous players at the time and had to deal with racial taunts from opposition players and supporters on a regular basis. But he was hugely popular at Carlton. He was heavily involved in indigenous affairs after his retirement, serving as CEO of the National Aboriginal Sports Foundation. In 2005, he was selected as a half-forward in the AFL’s Indigenous Team of the Century. In 2015, he was inducted into the WA Football Hall of Fame and, more recently, Carlton introduced the Syd Jackson Scholarship, to improve economic freedom, employment and wellbeing for young indigenous Australians.

here is a fair bit that binds – and separates – Taylor Walker, Tom Rockliff and Ben Stratton, who all celebrate their 200th AFL games this weekend. All three have been, or are now, captains of their club. Walker was Adelaide’s skipper from 2015-19 and seemed the inspired choice as new coach Phil Walsh charted a new course for the club. Sadly, Walsh passed away suddenly during the season and Walker was thrust into the role as leader for a grieving club, an unenviable role he carried out with courage and distinction. He was only two years removed from missing almost an entire season because of an ACL injury, but the key forward, who has kicked 437 goals, has been a popular player at the Crows his entire career.

Ben Stratton HAWTHORN
Taylor Walker ADELAIDE
At his peak he was supremely mobile for a big man, with a great vertical leap and a brilliant kick for goal. Midfielder Rockliff was captain of Brisbane in 2015 and 2016 and was one of the genuine match-winners the Lions had during what was generally a bleak period for the club. He was a dual best and fairest winner and an All-Australian in 2014, but he and the club needed a fresh start at the end of 2017. He crossed to Port Adelaide, where he has added depth and experience to a side whose premiership window is firmly ajar. With the Power sitting atop the ladder, he is a genuine chance to win a premiership this year. Stratton joined the Hawks as a mature-aged defender in 2010. He established a place in the side almost immediately as a reliable intercept defender with great closing speed, who could play on tall and small opponents. He played a critical role in the 2013 preliminary final, taking two key marks late in the epic final quarter as the Hawks came back to win and ended up playing in
the premiership side the following week, as well as in 2014 and 2015. He was the surprise selection as Hawthorn captain last season and is helping steer the club through a difficult period as the door closes on the three-peat era and the rebuild starts.

INSPIRING STORIES FOR BOWRA & O’DEA
WHEN DID THINGS START TO UNRAVEL AND YOU STARTED TO HAVE TO ACCEPT THE PROSPECT OF ESSENTIALLY BEING BOOTED OUT OF THE COMP? u That last few rounds of 2013, the draft picks and the fines and then kicked out of the finals, which was very sad for the boys. Just around that period I think we kind of checked out. I think if you look at the last couple of games we probably got smashed.
BAD TIMING: Nick Kommer’s AFL career coincided with the aftermath of the Essendon supplements scandal.
THROWN IN THE DEEP END It was a tough initiation for East Perth boy Nick Kommer when he walked into Essendon at the height of the supplements scandal. He speaks to 6PR’s TIM McMILLAN. YOU WERE DRAFTED TO ESSENDON AT THE END OF 2012 AFTER MUCH OF THE DRAMA HAD HAPPENED. TELL US ABOUT THE TIME YOU WERE DRAFTED AND WHAT YOU WERE WALKING INTO. u November 2012 to February, awesome. Got drafted, about to play my debut game and then it pretty much comes out in the media, I don’t know how but before round one, and from then on it was just week after week. WHAT WAS IT LIKE SETTLING IN THERE? u It was good. I was fortunate enough to move straight in with a couple of WA boys, David Myers and Trav Colyer. They took me under their wing. We got on pretty well, but at training, and I think most clubs are the same, you’re not there to make friends, you’re there to play footy, which is big business. WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT IT ABSOLUTELY EXPLODED? u When it first went off it wasn’t too bad because no one knew the extent of it all and no one knew how ASADA would find the verdict and all that kind of stuff, so it was kind of a chilled out feeling at the start. There was a lot of media outside the club and outside people’s houses to start with, but it wasn’t until when we came to Perth that ‘Hirdy’ (James Hird) got smashed in the media. The next time we came to Perth, Jobe (Watson) got

AFTER HIS DEPARTURE, ANOTHER INCREDIBLE FIGURE IN FOOTBALL, ‘BOMBER’ THOMPSON, COMES IN. WHAT ARE YOUR IMPRESSIONS OF HIM? u His footy brain was as good as anyone’s I’ve ever seen. He was amazing. His time at Geelong speaks for itself, and then he comes here. The way he delivered messages was exceptional.
booed and it started to keep building up. By the end of that year, when we got fined and eventually got kicked out of finals, that was when we all thought geez, this is pretty serious stuff. IS IT JUST UNFORTUNATE THAT YOU LANDED AT THAT CLUB AT THAT TIME? u It’s stiff because all the boys got through it, but I always say to my mates that I got kicked out of a finals series and I didn’t do anything wrong. The main thing for me was living with Dave and Trav and seeing how stressed they were and how much it affected their life outside footy with their partners and their families. It wasn’t just the boys either. You’re wearing a Bombers scarf and you’re sitting in the stands and my family’s getting accused of being drug cheats and stuff like that. IS THAT RIGHT? WHEN YOU WERE PLAYING HERE? u That Jobe game, which I’ll never forget how loud they were booing Jobe at Subiaco Oval, I was just like, wow. I love footy but there’s a time when you can draw a line and say this is bigger and more important than footy – it’s someone’s wellbeing. WHAT WAS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH JAMES HIRD LIKE? u It was actually really good. It’s always easy to get on well with your coach. I played 19 games in my first year and he gave me my debut game. We got on quite well, and I went to his house for dinners. He is a really good guy. He wanted to make you feel like you belonged at Essendon which I thought was really important.

THEN OF COURSE ANOTHER HUGE FIGURE IN FOOTY, IN ‘WOOSHA’. AGAIN A DIFFERENT CHARACTER. YOUR IMPRESSIONS OF JOHN WORSFOLD? u I got on really well with him even though he was the coach that delisted me. But he is a super nice guy, very softly and gently spoken, and one of the hardest blokes in footy. He was a real gentleman. THAT WAS THE END OF 2016, AND WERE YOU THINKING THEN OF COMING BACK TO PERTH AND STARTING YOUR POST-AFL CAREER HERE? WHAT KEPT YOU IN MELBOURNE AT THAT TIME? u I just wanted to stay in Melbourne for a year and enjoy Melbourne for what it is, which is an awesome sporting capital. You’ve got the tennis, you’ve got cricket, footy, pubs, bars. And I just ended up playing local footy at the time and working away. MOVING BACK TO PERTH. WAS THAT AN OBVIOUS CHOICE FOR YOU IN THE END? u With family and friends, I think it’s always easier to move back, and I wanted to finish off some study so I decided to do that. I started the study initially in Perth before getting drafted and then continued it online in Melbourne, and then back here in Perth. I’ve done a Sports and Exercise Science degree at UWA and now I’m doing my Masters in teaching at UWA too. DO YOU WATCH FOOTY WITH THE BOMBERS IN YOUR HEART? u Yes, I’m a Bombers boy now. We have a large WA base of Bomber supporters. I’ll always have a soft spot for the Eagles, but they’ve had their time – four flags now. Time for the Bombers to fly again.

#1 PRESSURE PLAYER
MARCUS BONTEMPELLI WESTERN BULLDOGS v ADELAIDE CROWS Metricon Stadium August 16, 2020
u The Western Bulldogs put Adelaide
to the sword last weekend, kicking a massive score of 16.15 (111) to secure a 57-point triumph at Metricon Stadium. The Bulldogs did as they pleased, with Aaron Naughton helping himself to six goals and eight others adding their names to the scoresheet. Among them was captain Marcus Bontempelli, who kicked two majors while knocking up getting possessions at will. He finished the day with 33 touches, along with a massive 12 clearances (seven out of the centre), 11 score involvements, six marks and six inside 50s. It was a dazzling display of the attacking side of his game, but Bontempelli’s pressure was also colossal. According to Champion Data’s numbers, the ‘Bont’ amassed 84.3 pressure points, which was made possible by an enormous 34 pressure acts and a game-high nine tackles. With his pressure stats incredibly high and his ball-gathering ability on full show, it was one of the most dominant performances of the season. Champion Data introduced its pressure point system in 2011 as a way of measuring defensive intent beyond just tackles, spoils and smothers. Points are awarded for corralling (1.2), chasing (1.5), closing (2.75) and physical pressure (3.75).

HORSING AROUND
u One of the
In round eight, St Kilda kicked 12 goals from 13 scoring shots against Port Adelaide. Dan Butler was unlucky when his difficult running shot hit the post to register the Saints’ only behind. The following week, Fremantle was also remarkably accurate against Collingwood with a tally of 10.1 (61). Have there been any instances when no behinds were registered by both teams in either the first or second half of a match? CH: At Kardinia Park in 1980, the Cats led the Kangaroos by nine points when the second quarter ended. Torrential rain for the remainder of the match made conditions difficult. Geelong kept the visitors scoreless for the second half, while adding six goals straight to win easily. Earlier this season, the goal umpires did not have to signal any behinds during the first half of the Gold Coast-Fremantle encounter at Metricon Stadium (the Suns led the Dockers 7.0 to 6.0). On just five occasions, a team has finished a match with no minor scores. The most prolific was Hawthorn with seven goals without a blemish against Essendon at Glenferrie Oval watched by 7000 fans in 1949. Another occasion occurred on a wet Whitten Oval in 1953 when Fitzroy champion Allan Ruthven kicked his team’s only score for the day late in the last quarter against the Bulldogs, when he hurriedly put boot to ball at a boundary throw-in. Sixty years ago, Collingwood struggled to score against Melbourne in the Grand Final. In heavy conditions, the Magpies’ only score in the first half was a goal booted by Ray Gabelich in the first quarter. John Henderson added another in the third term. In the final quarter, a mere two behinds were added by Brian Beers and Ron O’Dwyer, resulting in a meagre final score of 2.2 (14).
NAME GAME
disappearing given names in AFL/VFL football is Phil(ip). Only the Giants’ Phil Davis carries the name on 2020 lists; once there were Phil Carman, Phil Baker, Phillip Pinnell, Phil Manassa, Phil Krakouer, Phillip Walsh, etc. The patronymic (father-son) name Phillips has appeared 17 times historically, the current representatives being Collingwood’s Tom Phillips, Carlton’s Fraser Phillips, Essendon’s Andrew Phillips and St Kilda’s Ed Phillips. The name derives from two Greek words, philos (“loving”) and hippos (“horse”). Philip/Phillip therefore means “a horse lover”, so these four may more appropriately be playing for Sydney under John ‘Horse’ Longmire. Horses rarely feature as club symbols, although the Box Hill Hawks were once the Mustangs.

GREAT DAYNE: The addition of forward status will see Lion Dayne Zorko’s ownership skyrocket.
DAYNE ZORKO
BRISBANE LIONS
FWD/MID The Lions skipper is one of the form players in the competition with a three-game average of 105 following his 107 last weekend. He now has the valuable addition of forward status and arguably ranks No. 1 for that position.

u Dayne Zorko has been in
fantastic form over the past few weeks.
His ownership is set to skyrocket as he has been awarded forward status, making him available as a MID/FWD in AFL Fantasy Classic and Draft. Just five per cent of Fantasy Classic coaches own the Lions captain, who has scored 94, 115 and 107 in his past three matches to rank him the second-best in the competition in that time. Zorko has split his minutes between the midfield and forward line relatively evenly, lining up as a forward 45 per cent of the time. In order to gain the dual-position status, players must have a single Fantasy position and play 35 per cent in an extra position.
If Zorko is not in your team, he must be a target to bring into your forward six ahead of the Fantasy finals starting at round 15 as he is the fourth highest-averaging forward. Generally, the names of interest when dual-position status is awarded are midfielders adding either defender or forward. These usually add handy flexibility and give a boost to their Fantasy Draft owners. In deeper draft leagues, Wil Powell (add DEF), Jye Caldwell (add FWD) and Sam Mayes (add DEF) will please their owners as they could potentially replace lower-scoring players in their new positions. Hawk Isaac Smith (add FWD) could make a massive difference in Draft finals on his return from injury.

The underrated Cat is quietly going about his business and business is good with a five-game average of 98. This week he faces the Crows who have been giving up huge numbers to opposition midfielders and Duncan is equipped to go big!
ANGUS BRAYSHAW
MELBOURNE
MIDFIELDER The former Fantasy stud has finally been thrust back into the middle of the ground and his scores are reflecting that with 100 and 103 in his past two games. He comes with risk, but for his price and low BE, it’s worth it.
ALSO CONSIDER:
HOLD JACK STEELE
SELL TIM KELLY
ST KILDA MIDFIELDER
WEST COAST MIDFIELDER
Steele has taken his game to the next level this season, but last weekend it was hard to watch him score well below a number of his rival midfielders. The star Saint had just 58 with an uncharacteristically low tackle count of just one.
The star recruit has had a solid year from a Fantasy perspective, without being outstanding. His season-low 49 last weekend gave him a five-round average of just 77 which isn’t enough for a top-line midfield position. Trade him up.
NICK HAYNES
GWS GIANTS DEFENDER
By all means ‘rage trade’ the talented intercept defender, but be sure to reverse it and try to forget that game happened; he is better than that and it won’t happen again. He was tagged to a season-low 25 with just seven touches and two marks.
BRAYDEN MAYNARD
COLLINGWOOD DEFENDER
The hard-working Pie is having a great year and was coming into last weekend’s game on the back of some impressive scores with 86, 77 and 96. Unfortunately, he had his worst score of the year with 34, but he will bounce back.
ALSO CONSIDER:
HUGH McCLUGGAGE
BRISBANE LIONS MIDFIELDER
Has been taking a back seat to the Lions’ top-tier midfield brigade and it has resulted in some inconsistent scores. After an impressive fortnight with scores of 88 and 100, he produced his second 40 in a month against the Roos. Upgrade for consistency.
JAMES SICILY
HAWTHORN DEFENDER
Unfortunately, 11 per cent of coaches will have their hand forced by trading out the gun Hawk. The talented rebounding defender went down with a knee injury after scoring 51 and will miss a significant amount of football.

A second block of a fixture cram is on with rounds 14-17 being played across 18 days. Ten teams will have byes where average scores will be awarded if they played the previous round.
A couple of MID-only players who missed out on the 35 per cent DPP cut-off were Nat Fyfe and Tim Taranto. Fyfe has played 32.5 per cent as a FWD, while Taranto missed out by just 0.4 per cent.
Marcus Bontempelli had a big day against the Crows, racking up 145 Fantasy points, the most scored in a game this year by any player. I’ll be looking to bring in MIDs when playing Adelaide.

TEN MILLION MOMENTS and $10 million raised for local clubs Grassroots sporting clubs are more than just places to play. They’re the beating heart of local communities, where moments are shared and friendships are nurtured. Since 2008, Toyota has been supporting local clubs through our unique Good for Footy and Good for Cricket programs, including annual raffles which make club fundraising free and easy. This year, we’ve reached a mighty new milestone. Together with thousands of players, volunteers and community supporters, we’ve raised over ten million dollars for sports clubs around Australia. Now that’s a moment to celebrate!

ST KILDA
Brought to you by
u Brisbane and St Kilda have their sights set on a top-four finish in what shapes as an intriguing match-up. The Lions were far from their best in their scrappy win over North Melbourne last Saturday, but another four points banked saw them consolidate second spot. It didn’t stop Chris Fagan from unleashing a half-time spray on his players following a flat start against the lowly Kangaroos. Fagan will demand an improved showing when they meet the Saints, who easily accounted for Essendon to move closer to sealing a finals spot and stay in contention for an all-important double chance. After falling well short against perennial
finalist Geelong in round 11, Brett Ratten’s men will get a chance to test themselves against another premiership contender. One player St Kilda will be putting time into is Charlie Cameron. The star forward dominated with five goals in Brisbane’s crushing win over the Saints in round 14 last year, but looked hampered by a knee problem last weekend. It’s hard to go past the Lions at the Gabba, but St Kilda will push them all the way. ALEX ZAIA
Highest score: 28.18 (186), round 22, 2005, at Marvel Stadium. Lowest score: 5.15 (45), round 19, 1994, at Waverley Park. Away record: 7-16. Home record: 17-7. Greatest winning margin: 139 points, round 22, 2005, at Marvel Stadium. Longest winning sequence: 5, round 10, 1990, to round 11, 1993. Most goals in a game: 12, Tony Lockett, round 10, 1992, at Moorabbin.
Prediction: Brisbane Lions by 10 points
