he least football could give us after this stinker of a year is a grandstand finish to the home and away season. Which is what we’re getting, and every match, save for the Hawthorn-Gold Coast early Sunday afternoon match-up, is meaningful. And not just at the pointy end of the ladder. Adelaide’s late-season renaissance means the 2020 wooden spoon remains in play. If not for the fact that the in-form Tigers are coming to town determined to protect their double chance, you’d fancy the Crows making it four successive wins to end the season and get off the bottom. The round kicks off on Thursday night with West Coast ‘hosting’ North Melbourne at Metricon Stadium. All that is required for the Eagles is that they take care of business, protect fifth place and hope for an unlikely Geelong or Richmond stumble in the days to follow. The Eagles are bent, but not broken. They’ve been ravaged by injury and are now without star intercept defender Jeremy McGovern, who hurt his hamstring during last week’s gutsy 15-point win over St Kilda. North just wants this awful season to end, and might yet finish up with its first wooden spoon since 1972. u So we finally reach the

finishing line of a home and away season like no other. It seems an eternity since the AFL put the season on hold after just one round back in March and then we sat out all of April and May before the June 11 resumption. But here we are at round 18 and for several teams it’s just a matter of fine-tuning before
the finals while the also-rans can ponder 2021. Senior writer ASHLEY BROWNE looks at the sides who have missed the October action and what lies ahead. For Essendon, it means a coaching changeover with the Ben Rutten succession plan about to take immediate effect. Browne has paid tribute to John Worsfold, who Rutten
The Giants have lost their past two and are falling fast
Friday night is massive. Sixth-placed St Kilda blew a winnable game against the depleted West Coast last week and, while the Saints have probably done enough to make the finals, a win over the fading 10th-placed GWS Giants will make sure of it. The Giants have lost their past two and are falling fast. But a win here keeps them alive at least through the remainder of the weekend. There might have been better coaches tactically, but Worsfold leaves a legacy not only at West Coast, where he is a club legend and premiership captain and coach, but he had a profound influence at Adelaide and Essendon in the darkest chapters of those two clubs.
The pre-finals bye will allow the AFL Record team to focus on finals editions. The Record will be on sale in Victoria at newsagents and Coles and Coles Express while the online edition will continue. ONE WEEK at a TIME clash – their original round three game was postponed because of a COVID-19 scare – and a win over the Bombers would get them into the finals if the Western Bulldogs lose, or the Saints go down by a heavy margin. Adelaide-Richmond follows with the uber-professional Tigers certain to take care of business, while Brisbane will remain in the hunt for the minor premiership with a win over Carlton in the night clash. Meaningful Sunday football kicks in midway through the afternoon with Sydney coming up against Geelong. The Cats were disappointing against Richmond last week, but beating the Swans will lock them into the top four and the double chance. Sunday night’s game should be a beauty. Fremantle is finishing the season in impressive fashion. The Dockers would be one club that likely wishes it was still a 22-game season and they have the potential to trouble the Western Bulldogs, who will likely need the win to cement their finals berth for good. The Dogs led Hawthorn comfortably by 40 points at

half-time last week, but won by only 36 points. It could have been a major percentage booster, but should
they lose to the Dockers, they’ll be overtaken by the Demons if they beat the Bombers. Monday night football closes out the season at the Gabba. Collingwood meets Port Adelaide, having secured its finals berth against Gold Coast last Monday. The Magpies have become comfortable in Queensland and a win over the Power would help them stay there. A loss could well mean an eighth-place finish and a trip to Perth to play West Coast in a knockout elimination final. A win to Port would cap off a fantastic home and away campaign in which the Power have sat atop the ladder all year. They can’t be budged from the top two, so will get two home finals at Adelaide Oval in any event, but in a season in which coach Ken Hinkley has had to fight to save his job, a wire-to-wire campaign of excellence such as this makes an emphatic statement.

NAB AFL Rising Star WILL DAY HAWTHORN

n a profoundly disappointing season for Hawthorn, the form of first-year half-back Will Day has been a shining light and the 19-year-old has been rewarded with a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination. The No. 13 selection of the 2019 NAB AFL Draft had 21 disposals, took four marks and laid two tackles in the Hawks’ 14-point loss to St Kilda at Metricon Stadium in round 16. After making his debut against Collingwood in round six, Day has played nine games and his performance against the Saints confirmed his status as one of the brightest young players in the competition. He had six rebound 50s, went at 76 per cent efficiency by foot and recorded 82 Champion Data ranking points in his best outing for the Hawks. Day’s grandfather Robert played in Hawthorn’s 1971 premiership team, while his cousin is Gold Coast forward Sam Day. ASHLEY BROWNE

ONE WEEK at a TIME
Bring on 2021 for also-rans
DECISION TIME: Although below his best this year, Crow Taylor Walker does not look likely to wave goodbye yet, but the future of Ben Brown (below) at the Kangaroos is less certain.
The off-season starts for 10 AFL clubs next week and while missing the finals is always disappointing, the plus side is getting a head start on planning for 2021. ASHLEY BROWNE looks at the early order of business for the clubs that will be watching on this October. ADELAIDE CROWS u Fears that the Crows would
become the first winless team since Fitzroy in 1964 were put to bed with late-season wins over Hawthorn, the GWS Giants and Carlton. And it was a nice reward for coach Matthew Nicks, a man with a plan, albeit one that took some time to get up and going. Big decisions loom over a pair of veterans. Former skipper Taylor Walker has a year remaining on his contract and his form is in decline, but having let so much experience walk out the door, should they keep him around? A likely departure is uncontracted Brad Crouch, who is on the radar of several clubs needing a big-bodied midfielder. Also worth seeing whether Nicks takes on a senior assistant/mentor such as Mark Williams or John Worsfold.
NORTH MELBOURNE u The Kangaroos have reportedly
made it known that all but a handful of players are on the table. Speculation centres around midfielder Shaun Higgins, who would add silk and polish to a side whose premiership window is ajar, while the chances that Ben Brown will still be North’s spearhead at the start of next season would seem remote. The Roos need an injection of elite young talent and offloading Brown for draft picks would help in that quest. North had visions of a higher finish than this at the start of the year and with Rhyce Shaw’s first season in charge came plenty of optimism.
8 AFL RECORD
Hawthorn’s history is to use draft picks as trade currency
Shaw’s seat will be considerably warmer this time next year if North is still lingering near the bottom of the ladder.
HAWTHORN u Probably the second worst of
Alastair Clarkson’s 16 years in charge and the master coach will be working feverishly to rectify things over summer. The question around the Hawks remains how committed they will be to the draft? They have the third selection overall and also have first dibs at promising outside midfielder Connor Downie through their NGA. Would they consider off-loading, say, Jack Gunston to obtain another
first-round selection? Hawthorn’s history is to use draft picks as trade currency, but the club seems to have embarked on a youth policy, which has seen skipper Ben Stratton and Paul Puopolo call it a day and Ricky Henderson is under the pump. Shaun Burgoyne is set for one last season, while Isaac Smith should be re-signed.
SYDNEY SWANS u Another year out of the finals
for the Swans and, while five wins doesn’t represent a great return on paper, John Longmire spent the year blooding the kids and the signs for the future appear promising. Among those to shine this year were James Rowbottom, Justin McInerney, Sam Wicks and Dylan Stephens. Sydney got only six games from Isaac Heeney because of an ankle injury, while Lance Franklin never made it on to the ground at all because of recurring hamstring issues. Franklin’s massive contract starts reducing next season, so it remains to be seen how active the Swans will become during the trade and free agency seasons. Tom Papley sought a trade to Carlton at the end of last season, but seems happy to remain a Swan.

RARING TO GO: After not playing a game in 2020, star Blues forward Charlie Curnow is a lock for the start of pre-season next year.
GOLD COAST SUNS u The Suns cannot wait until the
end of this season – so that they can start preparations for the next one. They’ll have future superstar Matt Rowell back in the heart of their midfield, fellow 2020 NAB AFL Rising Star nominees Noah Anderson, Connor Budarick and Izak Rankine alongside him, while Jack Lukosius and Ben King will be in their third seasons. Former Crow Rory Atkins is already ‘signed and sealed’ for next season as well. Could the weather and an emerging player list entice more talent to head north? The Suns tend to start their seasons better than they finish them and the goal in 2021 should be to be playing meaningful games come the end of the year.
FREMANTLE u There are some who will have
Justin Longmuir in their coach of the year calculations, so the excitement heading into next year will be enormous. The Dockers this season added possible Rising Star winner Caleb Serong to a burgeoning group of emerging talent. The big issue will be what to do with their abundance of quality defenders and whether one or more

might be put on the trading block. Midfielder Connor Blakely has an uncertain future with the club. And remember when Jesse Hogan and Cam McCarthy were seen as the pillars for the Fremantle forward line to be built around? McCarthy won’t be with the club, while Hogan’s four-goal haul last Saturday was timely for him and the Dockers.
ESSENDON u The ‘in-waiting’ part of Ben
Rutten’s job title will be removed come Monday morning and it will be fascinating to see what changes the new Essendon coach will make now that he is solely in charge. Bomber fans believe the club has lost its identity and Rutten needs to hit the hustings to share his vision for the club. The Bombers are in the market for another big-bodied midfielder and, if Brad Crouch and perhaps even Jack Viney are up for grabs, they will surely go after them with gusto. Joe Daniher is worth watching. He tried to bolt for Sydney at the end of last season. Will he try to do so again?
CARLTON u Blues fans will rue a season in
which they threw away several
convincing leads (against Melbourne, Hawthorn, Port Adelaide and GWS), but talk to those at the club and they’re reasonably satisfied with the season and their progress. Matthew Kreuzer has retired, Eddie Betts is an even-money chance to follow, while Kade Simpson and the club are due for a tough conversation. Once again, the Blues are likely to be active in the trade period and will target lively small forwards. They’d also love another inside midfielder and will likely make a play for Giants speedster Zac Williams as well. Charlie Curnow is flying and a lock for the start of pre-season training, whenever that might be. u FOOTNOTE: Collingwood, GWS,

t hasn’t been quite the same this year without some of the usual pomp and pageantry, but the AFL’s retirement season is well underway. It started with Irish pair Conor McKenna and Pearce Hanley finishing their careers, McKenna after 79 games in six seasons with Essendon and Hanley after 129 games with Brisbane and 40 with Gold Coast. Then came a pair of former Carlton No. 1 draft picks. Bryce Gibbs, the 2006 first pick, played the last of his 37 games for Adelaide last Sunday in the win over his former club, having returned to his home city at the end of 2017. Before then, he gave the Blues great service primarily as a smooth-moving midfielder over 11 seasons, playing 231 games, winning the 2014 best and fairest and twice finishing third. He also represented Australia in the 2010 International Rules Series. Gibbs fell out of favour at Adelaide in his final two seasons, but will always be celebrated by Carlton supporters for giving them hope during a bleak period for the club. Blues big man Matthew Kreuzer, the No. 1 selection in 2007, called it a day after 189 games over 13 seasons. There were stages over his career where he justified his selection,
Hardwick joins Tom at the top u Tom Hafey will always be the
gold standard for coaches at the Richmond Football Club, having led the club to four premierships between 1967 and 1974. But Damien Hardwick (right) is catching up. such as 2017 when he came third in the best and fairest and made the 40-man All-Australian squad. But he was cruelled by injury for parts of the journey as well, including a torn ACL in 2010, various knee, ankle and foot ailments and also heart rate issues. Last Monday, Hawthorn announced the retirements of 2013-15 premiership teammates Ben Stratton and Paul Puopolo. premiership-winning teams at Essendon in 2000 and Port Adelaide in 2004. He was an assistant coach at Hawthorn under Alastair Clarkson when the Hawks won the flag in 2008. And he has been a key figure at Richmond since taking over in 2010, overseeing a slow and patient rebuild of both the playing list and the culture at the club and, despite some hiccups along the way – such as consecutive elimination finals defeats from 2013-15 – he and the club stuck fat and were rewarded with the 2017 premiership, the club’s first in 37 years, and another last season.
Hawks skipper the past two years, Stratton was a superb shutdown defender over 201 games since joining the club in 2010 as a mature-aged draftee. He was a brilliant reader of the play, a great contested mark and able to shut down tall and small forwards. Puopolo joined the Hawks the next year, also as a mature-aged draftee, and made his name as a manic and reliable defensive small forward, who was also able to hit the scoreboard regularly. Fellow Hawthorn veteran Shaun Burgoyne won’t be joining them in retirement, with confirmation he will saddle up for a 20th and final season in 2021. The 37-year-old four-time premiership player with Port Adelaide and the Hawks needs 12 more games to reach the magical 400 mark and will start transitioning next year to an advisory role with the club’s indigenous program.

didn’t know it was definitely going to happen. I remember when we used to go and do our weights, I was training at North Melbourne at the time and going to a gym at QV in the city. I was driving home and was at a petrol station in Punt Rd and I can remember being at the bowser when Neville Stibbard (then North Melbourne recruiting manager) called me and said that they’d taken me at pick seven in the Rookie Draft. It was really a special moment.
FROM TAGGER TO FLAG BEARER
YOU WERE 22 WHEN YOU MADE YOUR AFL DEBUT. IT’S A SATURDAY NIGHT, ROUND ONE, 2006, AGAINST PORT ADELAIDE AT FOOTBALL PARK. WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER OF THAT NIGHT? u I was rapt in getting a game and I was having not a bad game. I was starting on the field in the last quarter and all of a sudden at the three-quarter time huddle I had the urge to go to the toilet. I’ve run down the race as fast as I could, never having had this happen before in my career, and next thing I hear the siren go and I couldn’t get out on the field. I remember I was that nervous whether (coach) Dean Laidley was going to hate me – I was meant to be on the field and here I was sitting on the toilet. But it all ended well. We had a win and I remember I got interviewed after the game, but I couldn’t even tell you what I said, I was that overwhelmed by the whole experience.
After being overlooked in three drafts and pigeon-holed as a tagger at North Melbourne, Josh Gibson had an amazing career transformation when he joined Hawthorn in 2010. He speaks to SEN’s SAM EDMUND. WE’RE JOINED BY A MAN WHO LEFT A DEFENSIVE LEGACY LIKE FEW OTHERS. JOSH GIBSON STARTED HIS 225-GAME CAREER AS A NORTH MELBOURNE TAGGER, BUT IT WAS AS A HAWTHORN DEFENDER THAT HE TOOK FLIGHT, CLAIMING THREE CONSECUTIVE PREMIERSHIPS, TWO BEST AND FAIRESTS AND ALL-AUSTRALIAN HONOURS. WHERE DO WE FIND YOU AT THE MOMENT? u I’m in regional Victoria just near Creswick, in between Daylesford and Ballarat. Restrictions are a little bit easier here, which is keeping me sane, but it’s still very tough with everything that’s going on in Victoria right now. EVEN THOUGH YOU WERE PLAYING SQUASH AND YOU LIKED YOUR CRICKET, WAS FOOTY THE SPORT YOU ALWAYS KEPT COMING BACK TO? u It’s interesting, because my Dad being from Barbados and my Mum from New South Wales, they moved down to Victoria before I was born, and so they had no idea about AFL football. I got introduced to it through Vickick, which is what it was called back then because it was only in Victoria.

YOU PLAYED IN THE FIRST 18 AT TRINITY GRAMMAR, BUT THERE WEREN’T MANY MANAGERS OR RECRUITERS KNOCKING DOWN THE DOOR OF THE FAMILY HOME? u I had some talent as a junior, but probably wasn’t the most disciplined when it came to dieting. I think I was about 95kg in Year 12 and I didn’t lift any weights. The West Indian cooking was going down a treat and I was probably on the gold card list at McDonald’s as well at that stage. I never made any of the Vic squads or any of the Oakleigh Chargers squads. I got invited down but never made them. Then in my last year of school I had a pretty good footy year and made it to the AGSV side. NORTH MELBOURNE TOOK YOU AT PICK NO. 7 IN THE 2005 ROOKIE DRAFT. ALASTAIR CLARKSON’S ACTIVE ROLE IN ATTRACTING RIVAL PLAYERS TO THE HAWKS HAS BECOME THE STUFF OF LEGEND DOWN THE YEARS. WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF HIM LIKE AT THIS TIME? u It was really pleasing. In that last year at North (2009), I was playing as a tagger and I really did think my best footy was down back, and at the time North had their eyes more on Nathan Grima and a few of the other boys. Hawthorn had won the 2008 flag, but Trent Croad had smashed his ankle in that Grand Final and ultimately didn’t play again. I guess they knew I had some good tussles with ‘Buddy’ (Lance Franklin) and the way that Hawthorn and ‘Clarko’ particularly spoke about how they saw me as a player and where they saw me fitting into their side and the role I had really excited me. YOU LOOK BACK ON THIS GOLDEN PERIOD FOR YOU AND THE CLUB? u It really was a special period. I was having a chat to some guys last night about this. Often people look at that 2013, 2014, 2015, but they don’t look at what went in beforehand and the lessons we had to learn. You can really take it back to 2010 and even 2011 in that prelim against Collingwood, when you talk about big games and situations and Bud kicked that ripper from the pocket and ultimately ‘Bally’ (Collingwood’s Luke Ball) kicks one from 45.
DIFFERENT STRIPES: Gibson saw greater opportunities as a defender at Hawthorn after 65 games with North Melbourne.
YOU WERE NAMED BEST AND FAIREST IN TWO OF THOSE PREMIERSHIP YEARS, 2013 AND 2015. THAT’S A FEAT ONLY MATCHED BY TWO OF THE CLUB’S IMMORTALS IN LEIGH MATHEWS AND JASON DUNSTALL. u They are pretty special achievements and what makes them more enjoyable for me now is being able to have the team success. Winning premierships is what we play for, and after you get a taste of Grand Final day and then being able to win one, it puts into perspective all those extra training sessions I did to get fit and all the sacrifices players make to get to play on that day. Being able to win those premierships makes the individual accolades far more enjoyable.

FAREWELL WOOSHA: Outgoing Bombers coach John Worsfold will end a 34-year involvement in the game, which included being a dual-premiership skipper with West Coast (below).

A steady hand in any crisis It’s the end of the road for John Worsfold this weekend, but he remains a giant of our game.
S
aturday afternoon’s Essendon-Melbourne clash at Metricon Stadium shapes as historic in one significant aspect. It is likely to be the last time John Worsfold is listed on an official AFL team sheet. The Essendon coach is finishing up after 34 years of almost unbroken involvement in the game. It started in 1987 when he was a raw, but rugged half-back for expansion side West Coast. He became one of the greatest figures in West Coast’s history, playing 209 games and captaining the 1992 and 1994 premierships, the first to be won by a club from outside Victoria. He was hard and tough and every bit the complete opposite on the field from the mild-mannered pharmacist he was away from it. After a year in the media and two years as an assistant coach at Carlton, he returned to the Eagles as coach in 2002. His tenure coincided with the drafting of Chris Judd and he had the Eagles back in the finals immediately and into the Grand Final in 2005. They lost to the Swans by four points in a low-scoring classic but avenged that result the following year, beating them by a point. It fell apart for the Eagles after that and Worsfold was not able to curb some of the off-field excesses that subsequently came to light. But Worsfold walks in rare company in AFL history, joining Percy Bentley, Jack Dyer, John Nicholls and David Parkin as premiership captains who later coached that same club to a flag.
14 AFL RECORD
His calm demeanour and deep experience kept him a person in demand. He has cut a slightly different figure in the last part of his coaching career, almost akin to a wartime prime minister. As Adelaide tried to pick up the pieces following the sudden death in the middle of 2015 of coach Phil Walsh, Worsfold joined Adelaide in an advisory capacity to smooth the waters for stand-in coach Scott Camporeale as he navigated the remainder of the season. He did a terrific job there as the Crows made it through to the second week of the finals. And it made him the perfect coach for Essendon, initially through the horror that was the Bombers’ 2016 season when they were missing a dozen regular senior players due to sanctions resulting from the supplements scandal. And then he had to piece the club together the following season as those players returned. But with his family back in Perth, there was always a nagging doubt whether Worsfold was there for the long term. Defensive specialist Ben Rutten was poached from Richmond as the senior assistant coach and then elevated this year to coach-in-waiting. Former premiership player Blake Caracella also returned from Tigerland in a strategic coaching role. The progress has been slow the past few years and the great wins few and far between. Past players such as Matthew Lloyd and Dean Wallis have slammed the club for its lack
He has cut a different figure, almost akin to a wartime prime minister
of identity, and to those on the outside at Tullamarine, the club has appeared to be in a holding pattern for too long. The handover to Rutten has been slow and methodical, but perhaps it could have happened earlier. Worsfold’s insistence that progress has been made at Essendon has not been borne out on the scoreboard. Worsfold departs the Bombers not as a beloved figure, but nonetheless important in its history. He did what great wartime leaders do, chart a path through stormy waters and create a framework for posterity going forward. He wants to remain involved in the game and there is bound to be a role for him somewhere. A return to Adelaide might be on the cards, with Matthew Nicks reportedly on the lookout for a senior assistant/mentor. Those close to Worsfold believe he has one item remaining on his bucket list – some sort of position with Fremantle. Whether the Dockers have enough room in their reduced soft cap next season to accommodate him is unclear, but to play a meaningful part in Fremantle’s first premiership – having had his fingerprints all over the first three won by the Eagles – would make him a true giant of West Australian footy. That is if he’s not already. @hashbrowne u GIANT THOUGHTS is proudly

#1 PRESSURE PLAYER
JOSH DUNKLEY HAWTHORN v WESTERN BULLDOGS
Adelaide Oval, Sept 13
u Josh Dunkley has been the man for
all positions for the Western Bulldogs in 2020. The normally prolific midfielder has shared his game-time between his regular on-ball role, minutes spent in the forward line and even toiling away as a ruckman, highlighting his versatility and adaptability for coach Luke Beveridge. One thing Dunkley is never devoid of, no matter what role he plays, is intent and a willingness to compete. That was again evident last Sunday as the Bulldogs bounced back into finals contention with a comfortable 36-point victory over Hawthorn at Adelaide Oval. The 23-year-old was the best pressure player on the ground according to Champion Data. He finished with a game-high 10 tackles, including four inside 50, while producing 33 pressure acts to tally a massive 86.6 pressure points. Not only did he do plenty of hard work on the defensive side of the ball, he also racked up 20 possessions, seven score involvements, five clearances and three inside 50s in a quality all-round performance.

a midfielder/on-baller but was born to be a defender, at least by name. In one version, the surname Duncan derives from the Gaelic words donn (brown) and cath (warrior). A Hawthorn defender, perhaps? In another version, dun may mean “fortress” and so Duncan would mean “fort warrior”. Either way, Duncan is an ideal name for a defender. Seven other Duncans have played at the highest level, the best being Carlton’s Alex (1920-30s), a forward who lived up to his name by becoming a defender. In a 1927 match against Collingwood, he took 33 mainly contested marks, the game being subsequently known as “Duncan’s match”.
MITCHELL McLEAN, VIA EMAIL CH: On five occasions, 18 behinds have been scored collectively in a quarter of a match. Amazingly, two of them occurred on the same day. Matches scheduled in round 19, 1975, were played in blustery conditions. At the Lake Oval, during the second term, the Swans and Lions kicked nine minor scores each. Anyone witnessing that encounter could have taken a short taxi ride to the MCG in time to watch Richmond and North Melbourne add eight and 10 behinds respectively in the third quarter. Two years earlier, the Kangaroos and Magpies had combined to register 18 behinds in the opening quarter of their encounter at Arden St Oval. Nine North Melbourne players played in both record-equalling matches. In July, 1975, at Princes Park, Carlton and St Kilda registered a record 39 behinds between them by the three-quarter time break. Almost seven years later, the same clubs, playing at Moorabbin, became the first combination to kick 18 minor scores in the last quarter of a match. Bruce Doull, Mike Fitzpatrick, Geoff Southby, Trevor Barker, Barry Breen and Jeff Sarau played in both games. Alex Jesaulenko played for the Blues in the first one and was non-playing coach of the Saints in the other. In 1995, when Brisbane and Fitzroy combined to equal the 20 year-old three-quarter time record, Robert Walls coached the Bears, after playing for Carlton in the 1975 contest.

TEN MILLION MOMENTS and $10 million raised for local clubs Grassroots sporting clubs are more than just places to play. They’re the beating heart of local communities, where moments are shared and friendships are nurtured. Since 2008, Toyota has been supporting local clubs through our unique Good for Footy and Good for Cricket programs, including annual raffles which make club fundraising free and easy. This year, we’ve reached a mighty new milestone. Together with thousands of players, volunteers and community supporters, we’ve raised over ten million dollars for sports clubs around Australia. Now that’s a moment to celebrate!

LION KING: Lachie Neale was the standout player in Fantasy football in 2020, averaging 99 points a game.

WESTERN BULLDOGS
DEFENDER After scoring 85 against the Eagles, there were positive signs the defensive accumulator was back to his best. He was back all right, in a big way, and it was the Hawks who copped it with a season-high 128, which included 11 marks.
TOM ROCKLIFF
PORT ADELAIDE
MIDFIELDER Those who started him in Fantasy Classic enjoyed some hefty price increases early in the season as he averaged 114 across his first five matches. Neale’s average draft pick of 12 saw those who grabbed him with their second pick put one hand on the premiership cup … until his 37 in round 17 that may have seen some teams knocked out of the finals. Marcus Bontempelli posted the highest score of the season in round 12 with 145 (BCV 181) against the Crows. Adelaide was the easiest team to score Fantasy points against, with a late-season run of poor showings ranking Hawthorn second. The Brisbane Lions and Port Adelaide were the most challenging match-ups.
u What a season this has been
for AFL Fantasy coaches! Participants in the official Fantasy game of the AFL have had to follow Gillon McLachlan’s orders of being ‘agile’ and adapting to the changing landscape of the game. From 16-minute quarters and adjusting our thinking for ‘before coronavirus’ scores (BCV) to dealing with condensed fixtures, daily team announcements and rolling lockouts, agility has been the name of the game. Lachie Neale has proven to be the best at adapting to Coronaball. Although he is coming off his lowest score of the season last round, the Lion is the Dane Swan medallist as the best Fantasy player in 2020. Neale’s average of 99 is equivalent to 124 in regular 20-minute quarters.

The big Saint has been a model of consistency in recent weeks but unfortunately let his coaches down when it mattered, playing predominately forward against the Eagles and having little impact for 52.

I’ve booked my place in the Grand Final of our Bacon Cup Fantasy Classic league. Having the bonus trade for each round has been handy with all of the injury and selection issues due to condensed fixtures.
It was a disappointing end to my season this year. After the first few rounds, I was ranked outside the top 20K; however, I pushed up as high as 160th in the overall rankings in round 13, almost snagging a hat.
Make sure you take advantage of the captaincy loophole. I like Andrew Gaff and Jack Steele in the early games for VC and then Jack Macrae, Brodie Grundy and Tom Rockliff in the last two for captains.
