EDITOR’S LETTER
he 2020 season is here for a good time, not necessarily a long time, so it was a no-brainer for the AFL to load up the revamped, pandemic-affected fixture with blockbuster prime-time games. And this weekend’s restart is a beauty, starting with Collingwood and Richmond on Thursday night, followed by Geelong-Hawthorn on Friday night and a Port Adelaide-Adelaide Crows Showdown on Saturday night. With apologies to the GWS Giants, Thursday night’s clash of the Victorian heavyweights is the premiership-decider we should have had last season had the Pies inexplicably not left their run too late in the preliminary final. Collingwood has won two of its past five clashes against Richmond, which makes Nathan Buckley’s outfit pretty much the best performed team against the competition powerhouse of the past three years. And the Pies were arguably the most impressive team in round one – even if it was 11 weeks ago – in belting the highly-rated Western Bulldogs by 52 points at Marvel Stadium. The Tigers handled Carlton comfortably – as always – in u Like many in the football
the traditional season-opener that was played the night before and appear to be as strong as ever. But the beauty of this clash to reopen the shortened season is that with every team playing the other just the once, Thursday night’s winner might be regarded as the premiership favourite. With crowds not able to attend games for the foreseeable future, the Cats justifiably requested some home games at GMHBA Stadium against large-drawing clubs
industry, the AFL Record has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic but we have soldiered on during the shutdown with an online edition. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded the weekly online edition over the past few months via the SEN and AFL digital platforms.
The Record has not missed an edition since the very first one rolled off the presses in 1912 and, even with reduced resources, that tradition has continued. The online version will continue for the rest of the season, but there is exciting news this week with the release of an expanded print edition which will be available in
newsagents across Victoria at the regular price of $5. All nine games will be covered in the one issue, plus there will be regular features such as the Red Energy footy quiz, Fantasy Football and Answer Man with leading stats experts. News stories and milestone acknowledgements, such as Patrick Dangerfield’s 250th game this week, will also keep
readers up to date. However, due to earlier print deadlines, we are unable to produce the team line-ups in time for a Thursday night start. We trust our loyal readers understand that situation and it should be a temporary measure until crowds are allowed back. Enjoy this week’s edition and, more importantly, enjoy the resumption of our great game. AFL.com.au AFL RECORD 5

ONE WEEK at a TIME which haven’t travelled down the highway for years. The AFL delivered and first up they get the Hawks, their erstwhile Easter Monday opponents who haven’t played there for 14 years. Two things to consider in handicapping this game is that Hawthorn traditionally plays well there, having won nine of its past 12 games and, given its large number of imported players (12 of the team that knocked over Brisbane in round one originally played for other clubs), just about every Hawk has played there before, be it for their original clubs or at VFL or pathway level, so it’s not all that foreign. It remains to be seen whether not having fans at Adelaide Oval will detract from the magic of the Showdown. The build-up has been mired in the silly discussion about whether the Power should be permitted to wear their traditional black and white ‘prison bar’ jumper. Port says it should be allowed to wear it for every home Showdown, but no AFL club should
have a monopoly on any combination of colours. The bigger issue for both clubs is getting a win in what will be their last match on home soil for several weeks. The Crows and Power are relocating to hubs in southeast Queensland because of the South Australian government travel restrictions that preclude sporting teams from travelling there without undergoing a 14-day quarantine period. Port Adelaide has expectations of a big season and swept aside Gold Coast in an impressive win in round one. Adelaide blew a winnable game at home to Sydney and has since had to deal with distractions such as player isolation issues and a dust-up with favourite son and dual Norm Smith medallist Andrew McLeod. Every club will be happy to be back playing footy this weekend, but perhaps the Crows more than most.

ONE WEEK at a TIME
EVERYWHERE THERE’S DANGER THEN AND NOW: Patrick Dangerfield has been a star from day one as a Crow (left) and now as a Cat.
Geelong superstar Patrick Dangerfield plays his 250th AFL game on Friday, another milestone in a storied career in which he has achieved almost everything on the field and fair bit off it. He spoke to ASHLEY BROWNE to unpack it all.
THE CROW
u Dangerfield gave Adelaide
magnificent service for eight seasons and 154 games, from the day he walked into the club while still a schoolboy in 2008 as the 10th draft selection. It didn’t take long for the speed, strength and game sense, three of his absolute major weapons, to become evident and he became an instant fan favourite. Dangerfield loved his time in Adelaide. “You go across with about eight other guys in that age bracket and you grow up together, spend every day with each other at the club, or going out for dinner or to the movies, you’re in each other’s pockets,” he said. “They’re some of the most meaningful relationships you have. You play AFL footy together and
8 AFL RECORD
you experience the highs and the lows. If they’re the lows you console each other and if it’s the highs you get around each other. That was the special part about being there.”
THE CAT
u Once he left Adelaide at the end
of 2015, Dangerfield was never going to play for anyone other than Geelong, the club he grew up watching from atop a milk crate on the Moorabool St wing. He fitted in from day one. “Like a glove,” said fellow midfielder Mitch Duncan. “He’s phenomenal to play with. What he can do on the field is to a really high standard and not many can do it.” He was immediately Geelong’s best player and won a Brownlow Medal in his first season. Initially he played through the midfield, but over time the Cats have not been afraid to move him closer to goals when they felt they needed a spark. “I love playing around the ball,” he said. “You play the game, to get the footy in your hands and certainly as a midfielder that’s why I love playing. But having said that, as I get older it will be more the forward line than the midfield. Hopefully that’s a few years away.”

THE OPPONENT
u Intimidation. Ruthless. A physical
freak. The plaudits come thick and fast when longtime opponents are asked to scout Dangerfield. “He’s got weapons that no other player has, a unique mix of raw power and ruthless competitiveness,” Nat Fyfe said. “I love the challenge of playing on him and I’d like to think he likes the challenge of playing on me. There’s a fair bit of ego swinging going on when we play each other.” “There’s not many players like him in the League,” added Collingwood’s Scott Pendlebury. “He’s 6’ 3” (189cm), probably the quickest player, powerful and fearless. He’s a hard guy to play on because he can take you forward, take you back, beat you in the air and on the ground. “The number one rule is not to let him get behind you or you’ll never catch him. Number two is not to let him get behind you (when you have the ball) because he’ll run you down! It’s hard.” Added Adelaide skipper and former teammate Rory Sloane, “He’ll go down as one of the best midfielders of all time. His speed and power is unstoppable.”

ROUND 2 MILESTONES Geelong media staffers worried at first when he said yes to everything and everyone, particularly the much-hyped week ahead of his first game back in Adelaide in enemy colours. He then proceeded to play the media – both Victorian and South Australian – on a break. His attitude is instructive, whether giving an interview as a player or taking part in a match broadcast as a host or in a special comments role. Given he has polled 112 Brownlow votes in his four seasons at Geelong, who could argue?
it is and you’ve got to look forward. There’s no point reflecting on what you can’t make a difference to or change, so yeah, it’s not ideal but wallowing in self-pity isn’t going to change anything,” he said. “And besides, it’s about what you do and how you prepare to win one.”
THE FUTURE
u Dangerfield, 30, is extremely
durable, having missed just two games in four years at Geelong and only a handful in his time with the Crows before then.

THE PRESIDENT
u The rave reviews for Dangerfield
also apply to his role as president of the AFL Players Association, which he has held since 2018. “He’s an incredibly strong leader,” AFLPA chief executive Paul Marsh said. “He’s very considered, highly intelligent and a real support for me in my role but also our entire group.” In times of need and action – and there has been no shortage of that in 2020 with the bushfires and now the coronavirus – Dangerfield has been visible and active. “It’s something I take really seriously. There’s a legacy play about leaving the game in a better place than when you came to it,” Dangerfield said. “We’re all fortunate that the players who came before us paved the way for better working conditions. I’m mindful of that.” The players themselves back him strongly. “He’s very strong in his opinions on how the AFL and the AFLPA operate and our role in the game. He’s been a great president so far,” Marsh said.
THE PERFORMER
u Dangerfield has always been one
of the better-performed AFL stars in front of a camera. He was terrific while at the Crows and has taken it to another level at the Cats.
LIFE BALANCE: Dangerfield as head of the AFLPA (above left) and with son George.
THE FAMILY MAN
u Playing his footy in front of family
and friends was a big reason why he returned from Adelaide. “He has a great sense of family,” his manager Paul Connors said. “Yeah, it’s the best,” Dangerfield admitted, telling a story about how he regularly brings his son George to the club, even on days off, just to have a bounce on the trampoline. “Family is everything,” he said. “It’s just so important and a special part of our game. I am so blessed because they’re so embracing of that here as I’m sure they are at other clubs.”
THE UNFULFILLED
u If there is one blemish in an
otherwise fantastic career, it is Dangerfield’s 0-4 record in preliminary finals. He has never graced the MCG on the biggest day of the year. “That’s the reason you play and I’d give it all away tomorrow for a win on Grand Final day,” he said. But he’s also pragmatic. “You can’t sit and be sombre, it is what
He could easily play another five or so seasons and the good news is he plans to play as long as he can despite a future post-football that those in his circle believe is limitless. “Form will tell the story,” he said. “I don’t want to play any longer than I think I can be one of the best players in the game. “I want to be really impactful and when I can’t be any longer, that’s the time to think about giving it away and passing the baton to someone else.” Footy has been great to Dangerfield and still has so much to offer. “Yeah, I love what I do, so I can’t complain too much. I’ve been fortunate enough to play with two great organisations that have treated me really well. I’ve met some wonderful people and some really great operators,” he said. “I look at it and think I’ve been incredibly blessed and lucky.” Footy can say the same thing about him.

ONE WEEK at a TIME ON THE HOP: The Roos were sitting eighth on the ladder with 11 wins after 17 games in 2016.
Shock as top Roo is culled
The need for speed ASHLEY BROWNE
I
t is regularly said of the AFL home and away season that it is a marathon and not a sprint, and over 22 rounds and 198 games, that is a fair call. So how do you describe a 17-round, 153-game season during which there will likely be no mid-season bye? Not a sprint, but a comfortable middle-distance race in which speed will be required throughout. While the date and time of the Grand Final remain unclear, depending on when South Australia and Western Australia open their borders, the AFL has made it clear the finals system won’t change and nor will there be a wildcard game between teams seven to 10th on the ladder. So what will it take to get into the finals in 2020? History would suggest that based on a final eight and every team having played at least 17 games, it will take nine wins and a decent percentage to be in finals contention, while 10 wins should just about be enough. The final eight was introduced in 1994, but it was only the following season, after Fremantle’s introduction into the competition,
10 AFL RECORD
that all teams had played 17 games by the same time. In that year, Melbourne was in eighth place on the ladder with nine wins and a percentage of just over 110. A more accurate comparison can be made after 2012, when the GWS Giants entered the AFL to complete the full complement of 18 teams. Since then it has taken between nine and 11 wins to be in eighth place after every team has played 17 games. North Melbourne had the best win-loss record of any eighth-placed club after 17 games, with 11 wins in 2016. That was the season Brad Scott’s men flew from the gates with nine straight wins to start the season. Conversely, in 2014, Adelaide held a 9-8 record with a percentage of 109 and was in eighth place on percentage ahead of Collingwood (105) and Gold Coast (96). The tightest was in 2017, when Essendon was in the eight with 36 points and a percentage of 109.7, ahead of West Coast (101.4), the Western Bulldogs (98.2) and St Kilda (96.7).

N
orth Melbourne last week made the surprising decision to part ways with AFLW head coach Scott Gowans. Citing the financial pressures of COVID-19, the Kangaroos decided to assign men’s talent scout and long-time assistant coach Darren Crocker to the role. Gowans has been highly successful in his time with the Roos, holding an 11-3 record and taking his team to a home preliminary final before the 2020 season was cancelled. He admits he’s disappointed, but understands the changing AFL landscape. “It’s not a personal thing, it’s definitely an economics decision, but it did come as a shock and of course I’m disappointed, but I understand,” he said. Meanwhile, it has been announced the AFLW trade period will run from August 3-21. This usually happens immediately after the season, but teams will now be able to shape their lists of 27, including rookies, before heading into the draft at the end of the year. NIC NEGREPONTIS

Cat villain turns hero ASHLEY BROWNE
M
uch has been written about the epic 1989 Grand Final and mainly from the Hawthorn perspective. And that’s fair enough. To the victors go the spoils, as they say. But the beauty of the superbly-written history of that game, 1989 The Great Grand Final, is that the Geelong version of the brutal and one of the most thrilling of all premiership-deciders in League history is also well represented. And that’s where author Tony Wilson, a Hawthorn-obsessive whose father Ray Wilson was a 1971 Hawks premiership player, deserves all the credit. So while we hear plenty from two of the unquestioned Hawthorn heroes of the day, tough men Robert DiPierdomenico and Dermott Brereton, who both risked body (and in ‘Dipper’s’ case nearly his life) for the cause that was their club’s first back-to-back premiership, several others emerge triumphantly and they wear blue and white. The most notable is Mark Yeates. The Geelong defender is regularly painted as the villain of the 1989 Grand Final after coming off his line and cleaning up Brereton at the opening bounce. But we learn from Yeates that it was payback for a violent clash between he and Brereton from the equally epic clash between the sides at Princes Park earlier that year, one during which the Hawks stormed back from more than 10 goals behind to win.
BRUTAL AFFAIR: The shattered Cats lick their wounds after the epic 1989 Grand Final and (right) Hawk Gary Ayres embraces teammate Robert DiPierdomenico, who suffered a punctured lung in the six-point win.
Yeates and Brereton have long made their peace and indeed it is Yeates’ willingness to speak openly and, over time, his embrace of what a special game it was – despite the result – that makes him a hero of the book. Coach Malcolm Blight and players such as Yeates, Bruce Lindner, Darren Flanagan and Tim Darcy add a richness to the tale and, dare it be said, even the most diehard Hawthorn supporter would now think it an outright shame the Geelong of Blight’s time did not win a premiership, certainly not in 1989, but absolutely one of the several close calls that followed. u 1989 The Great Grand Final,

was mightily impressive in its opening round triumph over Geelong as the Giants started on their journey to redemption. Last season’s runners-up started the process of putting their 2019 Grand Final defeat in the past with a superb showing at Giants Stadium, comfortably beating the Cats by 32 points. Usually a prolific ball-winner, gun midfielder Josh Kelly picked up 18 disposals, slightly below his best, but his pressure game was at a completely different level . According to Champion Data’s numbers, Kelly led his team and the AFL with 75.3 pressure points ,which was made possible by a League-high 30 pressure acts plus seven tackles. It was a quality performance in trying times in the middle of a strange round one. Another player high on the pressure charts in the opening round was Adelaide captain Rory Sloane. In his 200th game, he amassed 64.2 pressure points through 24 pressure acts and seven tackles in the Crows’ narrow loss to Sydney.

mature-age ruck recruit Darcy Fort is the first of that surname to play senior AFL/VFL football. While the origin of his surname may indicate someone born near a fort or who worked in one, Darcy and Geelong would no doubt prefer another more probable origin – that the name derives ultimately from Latin fortis meaning “strong” and/or “brave”, with Fort being a nickname for a person with those qualities. Who would not want a strong, brave ruckman? Interestingly, one of the possible origins of Darcy is from Fort de Bois-d’Arcy, one of several 19th century forts built to defend Paris.
WA LEGEND: George Doig once kicked 19 goals in a game for East Fremantle.

DUAL STATE STAR: George Moloney kicked bags of goals in the WAFL (Claremont) and VFL (Geelong).
MG: Fred Fanning does hold the record for the most goals in an AFL/VFL match with 18.1 for Melbourne against St Kilda in round 19, 1947. There have been five instances in the WAFL where a player has kicked 18 or more goals in a match. South Fremantle’s Bernie Naylor kicked 23.6 against Subiaco at Fremantle Oval in round 16, 1953. He booted 12 goals in the third quarter. Earlier in the season in round two, he also had a big day out against Subiaco when he kicked 18.3. In round 18, 1952, Naylor kicked an accurate 19.1 against East Fremantle. Goalkicking legend George Doig’s best effort was 19 for East Fremantle against Claremont in round 19, 1934. Claremont’s George Moloney kicked 19.9 against Swan Districts in round 16, 1940. Moloney played 88 games for Geelong (1931-34) and his best VFL effort was a 12-goal haul in his second match in round two, 1931, at Corio Oval against St Kilda.

WE BOUNCE BACK At Toyota, we’ve been supporting footy for nearly thirty years, but we’ve never seen a comeback like this. Footy is back. We, the footy community, are back, in a demonstration of resilience, passion, unity and pride in this uniquely Australian game. The only game in the world that starts with a bounce. Let’s support one another and share the excitement, because together we bounce back.

FOCUS ON
SHORTER QUARTERS AND FANTASY
DEMON DELIVERS: Jack Viney was the top scorer in round one.
u In round one, we had
our first taste of shortened quarters and it brought about a new way of thinking for AFL Fantasy coaches. The reduction of game-time means a reduction in scoring. Sixteen fewer minutes saw a rejig of what was an acceptable score. For almost two decades, coaches would celebrate a score over 100. Now, 80 is the equivalent to a Fantasy ton. Without boring you with the maths behind it, astute coaches have been multiplying 2020 scores by 1.25. This gives a general indication of what scores look like compared with years past. The term ‘BCV’ (before coronavirus) simplifies the comparison, hence 80 is the new ton. Jack Viney was the top scorer for the opening weekend with 132, or 165 BCV. This saw the
mid-priced midfielder increase the most value post-round one. It is important to note that price changes, and in turn break-evens, are relative to the points scored in any given round. The competition’s most expensive player, Brodie Grundy, had a break-even of 122 before round one, however his 114 (142.5 BCV) saw his price increase by $9000. In round one, a total of 22,424 points were scored throughout the nine games. In the opening round of last season, 27,509 points were scored. Therefore, we saw roughly the same rate of scoring as 81.5 per cent of points were scored in 80 per cent of game-time. While it isn’t perfect, if your brain wants to think about how a 2020 score compares with last year’s numbers, multiply by 1.25.

ADELAIDE DEF, $623,000 It is understandable that many coaches rage-traded Smith as soon as lockout lifted following his sub-par 35. Now the dust has settled, the poor bloke was injured, keep him.

ESSENDON FWD/MID, $572,000,000 After being touted as one of the main men in the midfield for the Dons, Parish played just 66 per cent game-time for 12 possessions and his team’s second-lowest score of 37.
LACHIE WHITFIELD
GWS GIANTS FWD/MID, $829,000 The Giants running machine is still the best forward available, but the strategy has changed with 16-minute quarters and the gap has shortened between him and some cheaper options.
JAKE LLOYD

SYDNEY SWANS DEF, $775,000
The former premium defender had a slow start in his long-awaited return with just eight possessions and one mark for 20 points. Expect him to bounce back strongly against the Dogs.
The lack of slow play in the shortened quarters didn’t work well for Lloyd or his owners. He managed only an uncharacteristic 17 disposals and four marks for 55, giving him a BE of 104.

It’s not too late to play AFL Fantasy. The best way is by starting a Draft league. Get a group of mates together and hold an iso-draft and follow your team for the next 16 weeks.
I pride myself on my captain research and advice. I’ll be looking at the players who not only have favourable fixtures, but those who will be spending plenty of time on the ground.

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne
Footy, it’s great to be back After months of heavy lifting, the AFL has cleared the way for a 2020 season restart.
A
nd we’re back. The 2020 football season, which because of the coronavirus pandemic was supposed to be cancelled altogether, start in the spring (with a New Year’s Eve Grand Final) or launched as a two-week late-July nightly extravaganza to fill Channel Seven’s Tokyo Olympics void, instead returns in the middle of June, initially to our TV screens only. All who are heavily invested in the game deserve praise for getting it back so quickly after the most significant disruption in history. It starts with the AFL and, with 80 per cent of the staff at its Docklands HQ laid off, those who were left had to do some serious heavy lifting. In the Herald Sun last weekend, League chief executive Gillon McLachlan spoke of the 80-hour weeks he has been putting in since the game shut down on March 22. Fuelled by a daily head-clearing run, two beers and Uber Eats, he has charted the path for the game’s return. The clubs have battened down the hatches admirably, faced with similar difficult calls to stand down long-serving, valuable members of staff. The players have been magnificent on so many fronts. They agreed to a significant pay cut and West Coast, Fremantle, Adelaide and Port Adelaide agreed to relocate to the Gold Coast, most likely for several weeks, to help get the game going again. With only very few exceptions, AFL players have been at the
78 AFL RECORD
forefront of social distancing, they’ve kept themselves in the peak of condition despite their isolation and have engaged with fans superbly through traditional and social media. The hope is they will continue to do so as the games resume but with the fans still locked out. The government and health authorities also deserve praise. Football, quite rightly, was not at the front of the queue, but there was recognition early on, both in Canberra and Spring St, that restoring the game in some shape or form as early as possible would serve as a meaningful distraction and a leading indicator that things would one day to return to some kind of normality for so many whose lives have been turned upside down by this pandemic. The fans have been incredible. So many have stuck by their clubs and have chosen to continue their financial support, often despite hardship of their own. As the AFL explores when and how fans will again be allowed to attend games, it is they who should get the first opportunity to walk through the gates. The return of AFL football this weekend is only the first of several hurdles the game needs to overcome. Millions of dollars have been removed from the game’s bottom line through the loss of broadcasting income, gate receipts, events and sponsorship.
LET THE GAMES BEGIN ... AGAIN: The tireless work of AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan and his team – as well as the players – has paved the way for a restart this week.
Ancillary industries, such as catering, hospitality, security and even AFL Record sellers have been wiped out for much of the season. Grassroots and junior football has also been severely impacted. Vital pathway competitions such as the NAB League and the Associated Public Schools in Victoria might get abbreviated seasons going. Grassroots competitions around Australia are still debating the merits of starting seasons that might last as little as two months. The women’s game needs to remain a priority after the cancellation 2020 AFLW season during the finals series. The financial impact of COVID-19 will be felt for several years. The game will likely never be the same. The long days and longer nights for McLachlan and and his team won’t be stopping any time soon. But he will pause to watch on Thursday night as the MCG lights up and Collingwood hosts Richmond. A million or so of us will gleefully be doing the same.
