ook upon it as a good idea at the time. Richmond, Hawthorn, GWS Giants and the Western Bulldogs were scheduled for this weekend’s prime-time action, but they mustered just half a win between them as the 2020 season resumed last week. Clashes between the Tigers and the Hawks are always fascinating because of the close friendship between Damien Hardwick and Alastair Clarkson. This one has long moved beyond the master-pupil relationship and is now a battle between the best two coaches in the game. Both have their work cut out for them. The Tigers kicked just five goals in their drawn clash with Collingwood and only got their game going for perhaps a quarter-and-a-half. The Hawks were obliterated by the Cats in the second half last Friday and Clarkson didn’t hold back, branding it a “fourth-rate” performance by his midfield. The Giants and the Dogs plain don’t like each other and firebrand GWS forward Toby Greene is usually front and centre of the action. After their elimination finals clash last year, Greene was fined u Fans have voted just how
FIRED UP: There was plenty of feeling in last year’s elimination final which saw Toby Greene fined for misconduct after clashing with Marcus Bontempelli.
$7500 for serious misconduct after he made contact with Bulldog star Marcus Bontempelli’s face and pulled his hair. The pair made their peace ahead of playing for Victoria earlier this year in the bushfire relief clash, but who knows what is in store at Marvel Stadium on Friday night in a game where the stakes will be desperate. The Dogs have appeared second rate in both their 2020 appearances, while the Giants were outhunted at home by North Melbourne last Sunday. GWS has genuine premiership aspirations, but in this abbreviated season, it will fall behind the pace with another loss here.
much they love the game – not with their feet but with their TV remote controls. While a handful of fortunate supporters were allowed to attend a few games, the big winner in the season restart was Channel Seven and the other broadcast rights holders. The TV audience for the round two opener between
Collingwood and Richmond peaked at two million. Given the country has a population of just over 25 million, that means one in every 12-13 Australians tuned in. Now let’s assume a lot of toddlers, some football non-believers (are there any?) and those who hate the Magpies and Tigers with a passion didn’t watch the
game, then it’s an even more staggering figure. The following night, 1.86 million people settled in for footy’s best modern-day rivalry as Geelong gave Hawthorn a nice old touch-up. And on Saturday the other great rivalry – the Showdown – attracted 1.46 million in another one-sided contest with Port Adelaide thrashing Adelaide by 75 points.
So it continued for the rest of the weekend. Some smart scheduling by the AFL certainly helped but it also highlighted that our game is far and away the country’s most popular code. The next step will be allowing fans to attend games in bigger numbers and working out who gets to the front of the queue. A nice problem! AFL.com.au AFL RECORD 5

AFL locks in new TV deals ASHLEY BROWNE
T
he Seven Network will continue as the AFL’s free-to-air broadcaster for the next five years after signing an extended deal that covers the 2023 and 2024 seasons. AFL Commission chairman Richard Goyder said it was a good outcome for the League in a difficult financial and economic period because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to the two-year extension with Seven, the AFL has also agreed to terms to a revised agreement with Foxtel and Telstra until the end of 2022. “It has been a challenging period for the game and will continue to be, but we are incredibly fortunate to have long-term broadcast partners who share our commitment to expanding our game and our
reach to an ever wider audience,” AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said. The revised five-year deal with Seven for 2020-24 was for $730 million or an average of $146 million a year for free-to-air rights. Meanwhile, the resumption of the 2020 season led to the largest audience for a Thursday night home and away game, with an average of 1.62 million viewers and a peak audience of two million for the drawn Collingwood-Richmond game. It was the largest audience for a regular season game since the 2013 Anzac Day clash. Seven’s national TV audience of 994,000 for last Friday night’s Geelong-Hawthorn clash was 81 per cent up on the NRL’s free-to-air audience of 548,000. In other broadcasting news, footy is back on ESPN with the sports broadcasting giant televising two games a week across its US networks. Australian Football was a staple of ESPN when it first began in 1979. PRIME VIEWING: ‘Roaming Brian’ is a popular feature of Channel Seven’s coverage, while inset, last week’s Collingwood-Richmond clash drew a record audience for a Thursday night game.

wo games in and Gold Coast midfielder Matt Rowell has already provided his first ‘remember where you were’ moment. The No. 1 selection at last year’s NAB AFL Draft was best afield last Saturday night as the Suns upset West Coast by 44 points for their first win since round four last year, or 426 days. Broad-chested and powerful, Rowell entered the AFL system clearly ready for the rigours of senior football and relished mixing it with Luke Shuey, Elliot Yeo and Tim Kelly all evening. Seven tackles and 14 contested possessions were key indicators of his ability in the clinches and he also finished with two goals. “I think I’ll get sick of saying it, but we love that we’ve got him,” Suns coach Stuart Dew said. The most fulsome praise might have come from Cats skipper Joel Selwood, no slouch in the hard man department, who tweeted, “Going to enjoy watching Rowell for the next 15 years. #youngbull”.

Weird but wonderful as footy returns ASHLEY BROWNE
T
he first indication that last Thursday night would be no ordinary night at the footy was when Siri dictated that the drive to the MCG would take just 22 minutes. No bottlenecks up Punt Rd, no masses of people crawling along Swan St. The pubs were quiet and Richmond station was deserted. You could drive down Brunton Avenue. The MCG itself might well have been hosting a dinner party such was the dearth of activity out on the concourse. Football was back, but for the fortunate few privileged enough to be in attendance, it was not as we know it. There was huge buzz and excitement about the return of the game, that much we do know. The million-plus viewing audience – the largest for a Thursday night home and away game – is proof positive of that. But the games themselves were largely sterile and soulless without fans in attendance. Case in point was the Jack Higgins mark on the goal line late in the third term that he then calmly slotted around the corner for a clutch goal. With 80,000 fans in attendance, the MCG would have been heaving; the Collingwood fans would have been screaming blue murder at the injustice of the mark being paid after a video score review, while the yellow-and-black half would have been dancing in the aisles as an improbable comeback continued. Instead there was silence. Then, with just a minute remaining and the scores level, Collingwood mounted one last attack from deep in defence, but without the desperate urging of a full house, there was a lack of urgency as the Pies placed a premium on possession rather than territory. Little wonder that both Nathan Buckley and Damien Hardwick

were quick to agree that it was one of the more “bizarre” games of their time in the AFL, which in both instances is approaching 30 years. The pair found themselves walking back to the rooms afterwards and remarked to each other that the game, which ended at 5.6 (36) apiece, might barely be worth reviewing. It only took a few minutes for the doomsayers to flood the radio talkback lines post-game to predict all sorts of ills for the game in 2020. That two of the flag fancies could conjure up just 10 goals between them was seen as a portent of things to come. But there’s a reason the AFL usually doesn’t schedule too many night games at the MCG in the depths of winter. If it isn’t wet, it’s invariably dewy and the slippery going reduces scoring. Add the players not fatiguing because of the shorter quarters and, supposedly, there’s your recipe for lower scoring games.
Better news for those who like their heavy scoring was that the Cats put 17 goals past the hapless Hawks under their own floodlights the following night. And in the end, after 184 goals were kicked in the warm weather of the opening round, the chilly second weekend of June gave us 187 of them. Football in the time of coronavirus added other new dimensions. Players have been bound by stricter rules around compliance and social distancing than the general population and four players – Port Adelaide’s Ollie Wines, Essendon’s Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Melbourne pair Charlie Spargo and Kysaiah Pickett – were all suspended last weekend for breaching these rules. Teams with a short-flight interstate game now face travelling on the same day. No problems for North Melbourne and Essendon, who were up at 6am on Sunday for their respective games in Sydney against the Giants and Swans.

RESPECT: Players, coaches and umpires took a knee to make a statement about racial inequality; once the action started the game’s stars, including Geelong skipper Joel Selwood (below), were back to their brilliant best, while footballs had to be regularly sanitised.
There might have been some frostiness between the great rivals on the shared flight up, but after fighting wins, there might have been a few shared beers on what was surely a raucous flight home. The resumption of the season also played itself out amid the backdrop of the global protests about racial inequality and the taking of a knee by players and umpires before each game, as well as the black warm-up tops sported by every player, was (with the exception of a handful of noisy malcontents on social media) warmly welcomed and appreciated. There are times when footy and politics can and should intersect. Otherwise the talking points out of the weekend were those
of any regular footy weekend – another against-the-odds win to North Melbourne, Carlton again paying the price for a tardy start, the brilliance of the Geelong triumvirate of Gary Ablett, Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood and the growing stardom of Port Adelaide’s own favourite trio of Connor Rozee, Xavier Duursma and Zak Butters. Oh, and the seemingly consensus top four teams for 2020 – Richmond, Collingwood, West Coast and GWS Giants – couldn’t muster a win between them. That we will spend much of this week discussing why is a sure sign that footy, slowly but surely, is resuming normal transmission once more.
Media great mourned ASHLEY BROWNE u Ian McDonald, the first media manager of what was then the Victorian Football League, passed away last week, aged 89. After starting his career as a crime reporter, he spent 18 years at The Sporting Globe, a bi-weekly Melbourne newspaper that covered football in incredible depth. It was there that he founded the Victorian Football Writers Association, which later became the Australian Football Media Association. Like most of the leading sportswriters of the era, McDonald split his time between the leading sports of the seasons, football in winter and cricket in summer, and he was a fearless reporter across both.
Which is why it was a surprise when he became the first sports journalist of note to cross ‘the great divide’ when he joined the VFL in 1977. It was said he was invaluable to the League because he knew all the tricks journalists would get up to. “Because he was such an amiable guy, he bridged the gap between administrators and journalists,” leading football writer Mike Sheahan, himself a former media manager at the League, told the AFL Record. “The lesson I learned from him was that eye-to-eye contact with people was infinitely better than ringing them up.” McDonald spent six years with the VFL before moving around the corner in Jolimont to the Australian Cricket Board (now Cricket Australia) where he held a similar role and also served as the team manager for the Australian Test cricket team for numerous tours around the world during a tumultuous period for that sport. It was there that he mentored Patrick Keane, who after leaving Cricket Australia, became the longtime media manager for
the AFL and is now a special assistant to League chief executive Gillon McLachlan and the Commission. Over the years McDonald also helped write several sporting autobiographies, including Lou Richards’s Boots and All. He spent the last few years living on the Gold Coast and is survived by his wife Jan, ex-wife Meg and three children.

NEW LEASE OF LIFE: Grant Birchall in his debut game for the Lions last week, and below far right, after being drafted by the Hawks in 2005.
No fanfare as milestone pair share the spotlight ASHLEY BROWNE
T
here are plenty of new realities for AFL footballers to deal with and among them is that milestone games aren’t what they used to be. So for Grant Birchall and Andrew Gaff, Saturday night’s game at the Gabba sadly won’t be accompanied by the usual bells and whistles. Birchall, who played his long-awaited debut game for the Brisbane Lions last weekend, will be playing his 250th game, while West Coast wingman Andrew Gaff will be playing his 200th. It has been a strange few years for Birchall, who for so long was an important and durable member of Hawthorn’s back six. After 16 games in his debut season in 2006, his next 10 years in the brown and gold featured just one season – 2013 – in which he missed more than three games. The hard-running and creative half-back was a member of the 2008 and 2013-15 premiership teams and Hawk insiders would tell you he was one of the first players picked every week.
10 AFL RECORD
But a fractured jaw early in 2017 was the start of a wretched run for Birchall and a series of leg injuries kept him to just eight games over the next three years with the Hawks. At the end of last season, he moved to the Lions seeking a fresh start. After missing the season-opener against his former club because of a tight hamstring, the 32-year-old played last week against Fremantle, gathering 14 disposals across half-back, and appeared not to have skipped a beat despite his prolonged absence from the game. Gaff was his usual prolific self for the Eagles against Gold Coast last Saturday, racking up 29 touches on the wing, on what was an unusually dirty night for the club, losing by 44 points. It was through no fault of Gaff that the West Coast went down. He has been a superb player for the club since making his debut in the opening round of 2011. He won the 2015 best and fairest, finished third in 2016 and has twice been an All-Australian (2015 and 2018).
He played well last season, particularly with a point to prove after his eight-match suspension late in 2018 that cost him a place in West Coast’s premiership team. Player and club would dearly like to make amends and he appears set to be an Eagle for life, having resisted overtures to return to Victoria. Gaff signed a long-term contract extension at the end of 2018 and, while it contains a clause that allows him to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, he has given no indication he will activate it.
Saturday night’s game won’t be accompanied by the usual bells and whistles

e enjoys flying under the radar and staying away from the limelight, but Shaun Atley’s 200th game for North Melbourne can’t be overlooked. At just 27, the versatile Atley will notch the milestone on Saturday afternoon against Sydney at Marvel Stadium. The double ton comes up in just his 10th season, which is quicker than club legend and the AFL’s games record-holder Brent Harvey (who was 28 and in his 11th year). The product of Rochester and Corryong junior football clubs in country Victoria has barely missed a game since playing 16 times in his debut season in 2011 and his durability is testament to his hard work, dedication and meticulous preparation. Atley has spent most of his career operating as a dashing defender, but has gone forward with some positive effect, particularly in 2018 when he kicked a career-high 16 goals. He averages close to 18 disposals a game and has two top-10 finishes in North’s best and fairest – the Syd Barker Medal – to his name. He is set to join teammates Todd Goldstein, Jack Ziebell and Ben Cunnington as the only current players to reach 200 games in the royal blue and white stripes.
The way he is rapidly racking up the appearances, it would be no surprise to see him hit the 300-game landmark which just five Kangaroos have achieved before him. In Atley’s past milestone games, the Kangaroos lost his 50th against the Suns back in 2013 before beating the Lions in game 100 in 2015. They narrowly accounted for Melbourne in his 150th in 2017, so it is trending towards another win against the Swans this weekend.

#1 PRESSURE PLAYER
JARROD BERRY BRISBANE LIONS v FREMANTLE Gabba, June 13, 2020
u The return of footy was
welcomed with open arms last week and none more so than by the clubs and players. All teams had around three months to either dwell on their round one defeat or bask in the glory of victory. For the Brisbane Lions, it was a case of washing the sour taste from their mouths after their opening round loss to Hawthorn way back in March. Chris Fagan’s side did just that by getting their season up and running with a hard-fought 12-point win over Fremantle, with Jarrod Berry a key contributor. The 22-year-old midfielder was his side’s best pressure player according to Champion Data, amassing 62 pressure points courtesy of 28 pressure acts and five tackles as he crashed in all day against the Dockers. Berry also picked up 14 possessions at 71 per cent efficiency in an accomplished performance on the day his younger brother Thomas debuted for the Lions. Another quality pressure showing in round two was by Western Bulldogs midfielder Josh Dunkley, who forced 27 pressure acts and laid eight tackles on his way to 72.5 pressure points in his side’s loss to St Kilda. Champion Data introduced its pressure point system in 2011 as a way of measuring defensive intent beyond just tackles, spoils and smothers. Points are awarded for corralling (1.2), chasing (1.5), closing (2.75) 16 and physical pressure (3.75).

ANSWER MAN GUEST
With Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury about to break Kevin Bartlett’s record for most matches at the MCG, I was wondering if there are going to be any other records broken at other venues?
with LACHLAN ESSING
THOMAS HADEN-CHURCH, TAS LE: With 2020 shaping as one of the most challenging and exciting seasons in recent years, it is uncertain where the fixture will head after round five. But within the first couple of matches, Pendlebury (196) is likely to overtake Kevin Bartlett’s record for most matches at the MCG. After him, it is a fair way off to Richmond sharpshooter Jack Riewoldt on 155 games, then Collingwood ball magnet Steele Sidebottom on 153. At other grounds around Australia, there will not be too much movement. Hawthorn’s Shaun Burgoyne (43) could claim the record at University of Tasmania Stadium by overtaking former teammate Luke Hodge on 47. Collingwood star Gordon Coventry played in an incredible 113 winning teams in 138 games at Victoria Park. Geelong legend Reg Hickey also had an outstanding record by winning 90 of his 116 matches at Corio Oval. The pair played against each other 23 times.

NAME GAME
CAN YOU ASSIST?
North Melbourne’s Paul Ahern is Irish in origin. The initial A indicates a descendant, while the rest of the name is a shortened form of two Gaelic words meaning “horse” and “master”. John Longmire might be worried were he back coaching the Kangaroos. Four other Aherns have played at the top level for a total of 16 games. With 19 games, Paul is already the games record-holder for his surname. Ahern frequently appears in the form of Hearn(e). The four Hearns are better performed, with 92-game Clarrie (1929-35) – a Stawell Gift winner – and Maurie, one of Fitzroy’s best in its 1944 premiership, the most notable.
u The AFL is seeking information
on the following former players: Alex Cuthbertson (StK 1956), Urban Duniam (SM 1950), Maurie Lyon (SM 1953), Gerry McDonald (SM 1953-56), John Svenson (SM 1953; 1957-59), Don Star (SM 1954-55), Jim R. Gallagher (Foots 1951-60), Eddie Phillips (Foots 1952), Peter Webster (Carl 1953-59), Dick Gill (Carl 1953), Kevin O’Brien (Carl 1954; 1956-57), Ron Rhodes (Carl 1954), Kevin Flint (Coll 1952-53), Warren Prest (Ess 1955-56), Noel Carroll (Fitz 1951; 1953), Vin Williams (Fitz 1952-59), Ray Millington (Fitz 1952), Reg Renwick (Fitz 1953), Eddie Tucker (Fitz 1954), Alan Fanning (Haw 1954-56) and Bob Constable (Melb 1953). u If you have knowledge of any

BRISBANE LIONS MID, $815,000
u Matt Rowell, the No. 1 pick
from the 2019 NAB AFL Draft, put on a show in round two. Rowell finished with a game-high 108 Fantasy points as he led the Suns to an emphatic victory over the Eagles. Following a score that was equivalent to 135 in a full-length game, Rowell increased his value by $65,000 to be the highest-earning player in Fantasy Classic after two rounds. The greatest Fantasy rookie of all time, Michael Barlow, scored 127 and 128 in his first two matches. However, this was the highest (equivalent) score posted by an 18-year-old in their first five games, beating Luke Ball’s 127 in his fifth game in 2003 and Ollie Wines’ 126 in his third game in 2013. It is no surprise Rowell has the second-highest ownership
in the game, proving that his $270,000 starting price was super value. Nailing the rookies is the key to Fantasy Classic success. That is, cash generation is the most important piece of the puzzle to continually improve your team via downgrades and upgrades. We’ve already seen some players whose starting price was under $300,000 increase their value in the opening two rounds. Marlion Pickett is the most selected player in Fantasy Classic and the midfielder has added $56,000 in value. The most popular rookie defender, Brandon Starcevich, and forward, Curtis Taylor, scored 79 and 69 respectively. The pair will not only be profitable cash cows over the next few rounds, but appear to be viable options to play on-field each week.

The Lions ball magnet is one of the few players who hasn’t missed a beat despite the shortened quarters. He is going at his second-best average of all time.
TAYLOR ADAMS
COLLINGWOOD
MID, $749,000 The Pie hard nut has hit the ground running and, like Neale, his numbers suggest shortened quarters are a myth. He knocked up his second hundred of the season against the Tigers and has a BE of 43.

ESSENDON FWD/MID, $553,000 After a horrible start to the season where he basically split his time between the bench and the forward line, he was finally given a quarter in the middle against the Swans and won the Bombers the game.
BRETT BEWLEY
FREMANTLE FWD, $426,000 Although the hard-running Docker couldn’t recapture his round one form, scoring only 52, he still has plenty of growth with a BE of just 11.
SHANNON HURN

Like his teammates, the usually reliable skipper was out of sorts last week, recording a score of just 53. Expect a swift response by the big fella who never stays down for long.

JACK MACRAE
WESTERN BULLDOGS MID, $827,000 Talk about a lost dog … Macrae didn’t attend a centre bounce in the first half and appeared to roam around the wing without purpose as a result. He scored just 65 and has a BE of 102.
BRODIE SMITH
ADELAIDE DEF, $590,000
After an injury excused his lack of scoring in round one, the highly touted pre-season bargain backed it up with a 40 from just 10 touches. He has dropped $55K and has a BE of 89.

Fantasy Classic coaches have three trades to use in each of the next three weeks. The key is to make sure you’re fixing your side while getting on the right rookies to generate cash.
One of our beloved Fantasy pigs, Tom Rockliff, scored his 100th score of 100 or more last round. Rockliff holds the record for the highest Fantasy season average of 135 in 2014.
Only two players scored a Fantasy ton in both round one and two – Lachie Neale (108 and 109) and Taylor Adams (105 and 100). Both have low ownership and their value has increased.

AT THE HEART OF RACING RECOGNISING OUTSTANDING MEMBERS OF THE QLD RACING COMMUNITY
“Seeing your horse win is like seeing one of your kids do well...you do form a bond with them that’s similar to a pet, and many people’s pets are like their kids. Above all else, you just want to see your horse do his best. “We were lucky enough to have Chile floated up to Queensland when he retired, and he’s now enjoying a second life as a healthy eleven year old equestrian horse.”

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne
Hot Suns take a giant leap A talent-laden Gold Coast outfit has made the biggest statement of its short history.
T
here might have been greater flashes of individual brilliance in the relatively brief and middling history of the Gold Coast Football Club. Gary Ablett provided a weekly highlights reel of his own, the now-departed Jaeger O’Meara, Jack Martin and Harley Bennell would sometimes put on a show, and Karmichael Hunt (remember him?) once gave us one of the all-time great finishes to a game . But there might not have been a more significant period of play in Suns history than what took place in the last two minutes of the second quarter against West Coast last Saturday evening at Metricon Stadium. It was quite something to watch as Gold Coast bossed the premiership fancy around the footy with tackles, bumps, desperate acts and one percenters that coaches just love. The Eagles could barely win a clear possession and, when they did, they were hammered and coughed it up. The two minutes of physical domination didn’t even end in a goal. Ben King had a shot on the half-time siren that clattered into the post, to leave the home team just three points ahead. But it didn’t matter. The point had been made. The 50 minutes of football that followed was the icing as the Suns cantered away to a 44-point win, their first since round four last year. That’s 426 days. It might prove to be one of their most significant.
44 AFL RECORD
SEN.com.au
We have been here before with the Suns. They won three of their first five under Stuart Dew in 2018 and went 3-1 over the first month of last season. They’re 1-1 now and are yet to play away from home. But Saturday night felt different. The win was powered by 2019 No. 1 draft pick Matt Rowell, who had 26 touches (14 contested), six score involvements and two goals. Two games in and he has already demonstrated the willingness and the capacity to carry this team on his incredibly broad shoulders. Best mate and No. 2 pick Noah Anderson chimed in with 19 touches and his first goal. King took seven marks. Jack Lukosius was outstanding down back. Gold Coast has cornered the market the past two years when it comes to the best young talent in the country and last Saturday night gave us the first real glimpse of what might happen when they – and several other handy youngsters such as Jack Bowes, Ben Ainsworth and Wil Powell – all click at the same time. And Izak Rankine, considered by many as the best of the 2018 draft class that included Lukosius, Sam Walsh and Connor Rozee, is still yet to make his debut. Gold Coast’s thumping win could not have been more timely. Most of the club’s emerging talent have signed through until the end of 2022. They’re backing themselves in as a collective to lift the club out of the
COASTING: The Suns had plenty to smile about after their upset win, while best mates Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson (above) showed why they were taken so high in the 2019 draft.
Their first (win) since round four last year
mire and to make some history of their own as they seek to become the first decent Gold Coast side. So many great teams have been forged by players from the same few drafts who make a commitment to stick together. And with a freshly signed and sealed TV rights extension in Gillon McLachlan’s top drawer, the Suns have five years of certainty ahead to build their team, grow their business and become the first Australian professional sporting team of any description to achieve success on the Gold Coast. If you barrack for footy and not just your team, you want the Suns to do well. They likely won’t be playing in prime-time any time soon, but as those of us who flicked over from the dreary Showdown last Saturday night can attest, they already make for a great night in.
