MAJOR SETBACK: Bomber Conor McKenna’s positive COVID-19 test has thrown the season into disarray.

EDITOR’S LETTER

o good can come from the announcement of an AFL media conference on a weekend afternoon when the games themselves are supposed to take centre stage and be the subject of all our attention. Back in March, AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan ruined a pleasant Sunday with his announcement the season was on hold. Last Saturday, minutes before the Collingwood-St Kilda game at the MCG, came McLachlan’s confirmation while standing outside its gates that Conor McKenna’s positive test for COVID-19 would mean the postponement of the following day’s Essendon-Melbourne clash. And with that, McLachlan’s season-long reminder of the need for the competition to be “flexible and agile” came to the fore once more. At the time of the AFL Record going to print, the next few weeks for the Bombers remain in a state of flux. How many of McKenna’s teammates will also have tested positive as a result of their close

contact with the Irishman at an indoor weights session last Friday? Will the Saturday night clash with Carlton, a guaranteed TV ratings smash, even go ahead? The Bombers-Demons postponement served as a timely reminder of why the home and away season needs to be regarded as a 153-game series rather than a 17-round campaign. There remains every likelihood Tuesday or Wednesday games will be required at some stage this season in order to get us through to the finals. Don’t go pencilling in your Grand Final barbecue just yet – replete with social distancing – because the date is yet to be set in stone and might not be for some time. McKenna appeared to be an unfortunate byproduct of the

u If the AFL’s greatest fear was

the possibility of a player testing positive for COVID-19, then what happened last Saturday afternoon probably didn’t trigger a panic attack at HQ. League CEO Gillon McLachlan and his leadership team were well prepared for that outcome and now we know one domino has fallen, management of the problem becomes the key issue.

The immediate action had to be to postpone last Sunday’s Essendon-Melbourne match in light of Bomber Conor McKenna’s positive test. At time of the Record going to print, we’re not sure when the Bombers and Demons will play their catch-up game, but that is not a major priority right now. As McLachlan said: “Our first priority is and remains the health

The Bombers remain in a state of flux

extensive grey area when it comes to how players can spend their time away from their clubs. Incomplete rules with regards to open house inspections and family visits appear to have brought him undone and turned Essendon’s season upside down. McKenna’s travails are one piece of what is now a complex footy puzzle. Training is another and following an AFL directive issued on Monday, contact between players is banned at full-squad training sessions. And then there are the hubs. West Coast and Fremantle are a combined 0-4 since relocating to Queensland and the disquiet, especially from the Eagles, is starting to grow. The Eagles are resolute they will be returning home after the

and safety of our players, staff and the wider community. That is priority one, two and three.” There can be no compromise on that and it is one of the reasons the AFL has had a strict testing regime in place since clubs returned to training last month. The AFL has done an outstanding job rescheduling the season, getting the

West Australian and South Australian clubs into a hub in Queensland and following all government guidelines. The fact some 13,000 tests have been conducted shows how serious the League is on the health and safety issue. Now we must sit tight, remain patient and let McLachlan and his team guide the game through these tough times. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  5

ONE WEEK at a TIME round five Richmond clash on Thursday week. But whether they will be able to quarantine at home or at a hotel back in Perth remains a point of contention and the subject of a serious negotiation between the Eagles, the AFL and the West Australian government, which has been steadfast in its view that football will not be afforded any special favours as the state contemplates when and how to reopen. Now the South Australian clubs need to bunker down. The Crows were atrocious in losing to the Suns by 53 points, while Port Adelaide was too good for Fremantle, winning by 29 points. Life at their shared digs on the Gold Coast must be one of contrasts with the unbeaten Power on top of the ladder and the winless Crows bringing up the rear.

Here’s a tip, expect the unexpected

NO COMPLAINTS: Charlie Dixon and the unbeaten Power are enjoying life in the Gold Coast hub.

SILENCED: Richmond has been unable to feed off the passion of the Tiger Army.

ASHLEY BROWNE u Add “tipster’s nightmare” to the list of descriptors about season 2020, the most unusual in League history. If you picked every winner last weekend, you likely fluked it. How else to explain Hawthorn comfortably beating Richmond, six days after a 10-goal loss to Geelong? That’s two straight weeks the reigning premier has been held to just five goals for an entire game. Or the Cats losing to Carlton at home for the first time in almost a quarter of a century? Who would have believed that the first win for the season for the Blues would have come at the narrow, difficult GMHBA Stadium rather than the familiar confines of the MCG or Marvel Stadium. What is clear is that mindset is becoming a weapon in 2020. How much has the absence of the large and loud Tiger ‘Army’ contributed to Richmond’s struggles since the resumption of footy? The Eagles are 0-2 since relocating to their Queensland hub and coach Adam Simpson has spoken of their dissatisfaction. Has that rubbed off on his players?

The Cats, North Melbourne and St Kilda turned in disappointing performances after their slashing wins the week before. Conversely, a week of bad press stirred the Western Bulldogs into action against the GWS Giants and led to their first win of 2020. Back to tipping. Perhaps the key to winning your competition is a degree in amateur psychology because what is becoming increasingly apparent is that much of this season is going to be played between the ears.

250 GAMES

Port Adelaide’s Brad Ebert and Sydney’s Josh Kennedy have superb breeding lines which will be highlighted this weekend when they run out for their 250th games.

Versatility keeps Ebert powering on ASHLEY BROWNE

P

ort Adelaide’s Brad Ebert is Exhibit A when it comes to players getting the very best out of themselves to enjoy a fine AFL career. Until a lingering concussion and a torn PCL last year restricted him to just 11 games, he had not played fewer than 21 games in each of the previous nine seasons, going back to his time at West Coast. On the eve of his 250th AFL game which, fortuitously, he will play for the Power against his former club at Metricon Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the 30-year-old said his longevity in the game can be attributed to his ability to “tick every box” and his willingness to play whatever role the team required. Indeed, it has been hard to pigeonhole Ebert over a career that began with the Eagles in 2008. Midfielder? Yes, at times. Forward? Absolutely, when that best suits team balance. “I’ve spent the majority being able to change up weekly with what I’ve had to do and I’ve been comfortable with that,” he told the AFL Record. “I came into the game thinking I could be a midfielder and I spent the majority of my time there. “But I’ve enjoyed the versatility of being an inside mid if I needed to and as a winger, but in the last couple of years it has been as a forward more often than not.” Ebert spent his first four years at West Coast and enjoyed it, before returning home to South Australia to the club where his extended family is revered. His father Craig played 112 games

8  AFL RECORD

for the SANFL’s Port Adelaide Magpies, but it is his uncle Russell who is an icon at Alberton, with 391 games and four Magarey Medals. You would think the move would have meant extra pressure to perform, but according to Ebert that has been a bit overblown. “I don’t put too much pressure on myself really, but it was on the back of me making my contribution and not getting caught up in ‘Russ was a star’,” he said.

Ebert hasn’t experienced a lot of team success at the Power. The narrow preliminary final loss to Hawthorn in 2014 is the closest he has come to appearing in a Grand Final, but he said the first year at the club was difficult with the axing of Matthew Primus as coach and the passing after the season of popular teammate John McCarthy. “When I look back, helping the club steer itself out of some uncertainty, that will go down as a highlight for me,” he said.

Ever-reliable Swan who always gets the job done

T

he Sydney Swans travelled to Marvel Stadium last Saturday to take on North Melbourne. Once again, they started as the outsiders. Once again, they came away with the win. Few teams are better at rolling up their sleeves and just getting the job done than the Swans and it has been that way for years. And much of that is due to Josh Kennedy, the Sydney co-captain who plays his 250th game at the SCG on Thursday night against the Western Bulldogs. A look at last week’s game paints the picture of the sort of player Kennedy has been throughout his career. Half of his 24 possessions were contested, he led the team with four centre clearances and three tackles inside 50. Only five teammates had more score involvements. It was the perfect blend of blue-collar and class. Whenever the Brownlow Medal count is held this year, it would be a major surprise if Kennedy does not feature among the votes. He has averaged 13 votes a year in 10 seasons at the Swans, highlighted by 23 votes and second place in 2017. It is all part of the story for Kennedy, who has been magnificent for Sydney since joining the club from Hawthorn in 2010. Despite his family ties to the Hawks – his father John jnr was

a four-time premiership player and grandfather John snr coached them to three flags and was recently named a Legend in the Australian Football Hall of Fame – he headed to the Swans after 13 games in two seasons because of a three-year deal and the opportunity to play more senior football. The Hawks haven’t really missed him despite the angst of seeing one of their own starring in the colours of another club, but Kennedy embraced everything about Sydney. With three Bob Skilton Medals as best and fairest, three All-Australian selections, three Grand Finals and a premiership in 2012, it was an inspired decision to get him, one of several smart Moneyball type trades made by the Swans early last decade. Captain in 2017 and 2018 and a co-captain the past two seasons, he is relishing his role at Sydney in a time of transition. He and Luke Parker are the remaining members of the old guard and before long it will be the club of Isaac Heeney, Callum Mills, Ollie Florent, Nick Blakey and others. Kennedy, who celebrated his 32nd birthday last Saturday with the win over the Kangaroos, missed three games last year, the most in any season in his decade at the Swans. If he plays all 17 games of the home and away season, he will jump to No. 10 on the club’s all-time games list.

BLUE-COLLAR WORK ETHIC: Josh Kennedy has made his name at the Swans, despite his family ties at Hawthorn (right), where his grandfather and father enjoyed so much success.

t’s not every day you get to run out for your 200th AFL game. Or get to celebrate such a significant milestone with a teammate. But that is what will happen this Saturday when West Coast pair Lewis Jetta and Jack Darling notch their double century together. Add to that the fact these two share a peculiar bond that they may not even know about. Back on March 27, 2010, Jetta made his AFL debut for the Sydney Swans. Exactly one year later on the same date, Darling stepped out for the first time in Eagles colours. The No. 27, which just so happens to be on the back of Darling’s jumper, will again be prominent when they join the 200 club on June 27, 2020. West Perth product Darling will become the 25th Eagle to play 200 games for the West Australian club, while Bunbury boy Jetta becomes the first player who has shared his career at the Swans and Eagles to reach the mark. The occasion gives the Eagles something to be excited about given the struggles they are experiencing in their Gold Coast hub. That two of the team’s much-loved players get to do it side by side is reason enough to come together and put the disappointment of the past two weeks behind them.

There is also no bigger challenge than to take on Port Adelaide – the AFL’s top side after three rounds – especially considering the recent history between the clubs. Coincidentally, Darling played his 150th game against the Power on a night which resulted in a remarkable extra-time elimination final victory in 2017. Lending further spice to this encounter is that the Eagles were easily accounted for in this fixture last year, losing by 42 points at Optus Stadium. That aside, the 2018 premier simply must pull itself out of its rut and there’s no better way to do it than on a big day for a pair of influential figures.

Ball tampering: get a grip

C

GRAHAM PILKINGTON

ollingwood president Eddie McGuire recently questioned whether the condition of the football has caused an increase in fumbling. The ball is the key element of the game. Way back, a pig’s bladder was inflated inside a leather casing. To the relief of pigs worldwide, India rubber was invented and we moved from a round ball to a pointy oval shape. It has stayed pretty much the same since. Sherrin began making footballs in 1880 – the year Ned Kelly was executed. The footy has always been in the news. In 1879, a white ball was used for a game under the invention of electric light, but it burst and there was no replacement. In the inaugural VFL season in 1897, South Melbourne defeated Fitzroy in the first game decided by a point, but the players were said to have been beaten by the movement of the “elongated torpedo-shaped” ball. In a VFA game at the Brighton Beach Oval in 1924, the footy was kicked into a passing train, smashing a window and hospitalising a Mr Lawson. A detective attended to identify the culprit and to fingerprint the leather missile. In the 1930s, Hall of Fame Legends Haydn Bunton snr, Jock McHale and Bob Pratt edited a training manual which said it is “seldom that two balls are exactly alike”, and in the wet, “it will lose its shape”. In the 1950s, a ball with a waterproof white coating was rejected. Eventually, the yellow Sherrin came into use in the 1970s for night games. Jason Akermanis, then playing for the Western Bulldogs, wrote in his Herald Sun column in 2010 that the ball was “fatter, heavier and more slippery” than before. A Victoria University study found variations in size and pressure even within the six balls available for each game.

12  AFL RECORD

ICONIC: Sherrin began making footballs in 1880 and the shape has remained pretty much the same since.

The footy was kicked into a passing train Variation is what you would expect for something handmade from leather. But it is also reasonable to ask whether any sympathetic changes could be made to our iconic football to improve handling. We want to see skills such as Carlton’s Eddie Betts instantly picking up in traffic and snapping a goal, or Jeremy Howe taking a screamer for Collingwood. Soccer and rugby went synthetic long ago to improve their game. A rugby ball is covered in tiny raised studs, but that is easy to produce on polyester but, presumably, difficult for leather. Premiership coach Mark Williams has teamed with Sherrin to produce a Precision training ball with a bigger sweet spot and a yellow line to show when it is spinning end over end. Could a football be designed with several aesthetically-pleasing curving lines of small indented or raised embossed dots stretching from point to point on each quarter segment, which are of sufficient size and shape to create friction

STICKY FINGERS: High-flying Magpie Jeremy Howe has had little trouble handling the ball, however, former Bulldog Jason Akermanis (below) believed they had become more slippery.

for the hands (and perhaps the boot), but without trapping undue moisture or mud, or weakening the leather, or worsening trajectory? A surface completely covered with dimples would give a bad golf ball look. The dimples should not be noticeable, but this depends on whether the dyeing process and the logo printing can handle depressed or raised dots in the hide. If technically possible, it would be a small change to our iconic ball to create a better grip and a better spectacle.

u Matt Rowell. It’s a name we are

going to hear a lot of over the next 10 years. The No. 1 pick in last year’s draft has started his AFL career in stellar form, playing a brand of footy that belies his 18 years. Rowell backed up his round two NAB AFL Rising Star nomination with another top-quality performance as the Gold Coast Suns trounced the Adelaide Crows in round three. The mature-bodied midfielder picked up 20 possessions and kicked two goals in the 53-point triumph, but it wasn’t just his attacking prowess which impressed. According to Champion Data’s numbers, Rowell’s defensive game was enormous as he amassed 79.1 pressure points, a competition high, made possible by 28 pressure acts and 10 tackles. Only teammate Hugh Greenwood laid more tackles (13) across the League in round three. It was just his third game at the elite level, but Rowell appears to have taken to the AFL system like a duck to water. The Suns meet Fremantle in round four, which will see Rowell and Nat Fyfe in the same centre square together – a tantalising prospect. Champion Data introduced its pressure point system in 2011 as a way of measuring defensive intent beyond just tackles, spoils and smothers. Points are awarded for corralling (1.2), chasing (1.5), closing (2.75) and physical pressure (3.75). 16

ANSWER MAN My two grandfathers were keen rivals. One followed St Kilda and the other supported Essendon. I always attend the matches when the clubs meet. running defender Riley Bonner and young North Melbourne forward Aiden Bonar are the only players of those surnames to have played senior football. In most cases, Bonner and Bonar derive from the French de bonne aire, meaning “of good appearance”, “handsome” and would have started as a nickname. The current English word debonair is obviously from the same source, even though its meaning has shifted a little to mean “charming”, “stylish”, “having flair” etc. A few other AFL/VFL players, including 1971 St Kilda Grand Final player John Bonney and Bulldogs skipper Marcus Bontempelli, have related surnames, all deriving ultimately from the Latin bonus meaning “good”.

BARBARA EVANS, VIA EMAIL CH: The East Melbourne Cricket Ground was situated on the western side of Jolimont Rd, close the MCG. From 1908 until 1911, Essendon and University played each other there on seven consecutive occasions. The last nine contests between the Students and Melbourne were played at the MCG, during a four-year period which ended in 1914. Carlton and Hawthorn became the first pair of clubs to meet at least 10 times in succession at the same venue. From 1977 until 1982, each of their 12 matches was at Princes Park. Collingwood and Essendon have been traditional Anzac Day rivals since 1995, but their current run of 54 successive MCG encounters dates back to 1992. Their most recent meeting away from the traditional venue occurred at Waverley Park. The Hawks and Magpies have met at the MCG 20 times in a row. Scott Pendlebury is the only player to participate in all of them. In Adelaide and Perth, the traditional local Showdowns and Derbies produced 35 and 46 consecutive contests at the now disused Football Park and Subiaco Oval respectively. The Crows and Port have already met 13 times in a row at Adelaide Oval.

WE BOUNCE BACK At Toyota, we’ve been supporting footy for nearly thirty years, but we’ve never seen a comeback like this. Footy is back. We, the footy community, are back, in a demonstration of resilience, passion, unity and pride in this uniquely Australian game. The only game in the world that starts with a bounce. Let’s support one another and share the excitement, because together we bounce back.

FOCUS ON QUARTER-BYQUARTER SCORING

LACHIE NEALE

BRISBANE LIONS MIDFIELDER

u Fantasy coaches have had

to retrain their brain this year when it comes to scoring. The 16-minute quarters means there are fewer points being scored and, with a real mix of scores in the opening three rounds, the pass mark of players has been adjusted. The catch-cry of ‘80 is a ton’ is important to remember. Demon Jack Viney posted the top score of the season with 132 in round one against the Eagles. Todd Goldstein racked up 127 in round two, while Steele Sidebottom and Lachie Neale finished with 126 each to be round three’s top scorers. It has been interesting to follow quarter-by-quarter scoring throughout games.

Neale, the AFL’s top scorer, has the highest-scoring quarter of the season. Back in round one, he started 2020 in fine form by collecting 51 points in the opening quarter against the Hawks. The Lion also had the equal highest-scoring quarter of round three, along with Brodie Grundy, when he pieced together 42 points in the final term last Saturday night. Burst/impact players can often have big quarters, but from the first three weeks, it has generally been midfielders who have consistently found the ball in their hands. You can follow the quarter-by-quarter scores in the AFL Live app in individual matches under ‘Players’ and by tapping ‘More’.

Now a must-have. The Lion ball magnet has done it again, continuing his streak of 100-point games despite the shortened quarters. He had a season-high 126 to take his average to an impressive 114.

TODD GOLDSTEIN

NORTH MELBOURNE

RUCK The big Roo veteran has turned back the clock and is in the conversation as the in-form ruck in the competition. The endurance machine is basically spending the whole game on the ground while averaging 100.

ALSO CONSIDER

HOLD ZAC WILLIAMS

SELL LACHIE WHITFIELD

GWS GIANTS DEFENDER

GWS GIANTS MID/FWD

The Giants’ running machine looks to have returned to the half-back line after dominating the second half of last year as a midfielder. Although he won’t reach those heights down back, he is worth a hold.

After a concussion ended his game on 10 points last week, Whitfield is unfortunately sitting in the No. 1 trade out spot for the second week in a row. He was already bleeding cash and has a season average of 48.

PATRICK DANGERFIELD

GEELONG MIDFIELDER

The Geelong superstar hasn’t responded to the shortened quarters just yet, averaging 69. It’s only a matter of time before he turns it around and the Cats should come out hungry after a loss to the Blues.

ELLIOT YEO

WEST COAST MIDFIELDER

Eagles midfielders have been a far cry from what we expect and that includes Yeo, who is averaging just 71 on the back of just 59 against the Lions. His best is outstanding and the Eagles will bounce back.

ALSO CONSIDER

MATT CROUCH

ADELAIDE MIDFIELDER

The reliable ball magnet is not himself at the moment, and nor are the Crows, so it’s well worth selling up ASAP. He is averaging just 64 which isn’t enough for an elite midfielder.

MARCUS BONTEMPELLI

WESTERN BULLDOGS MIDFIELDER The ‘Bont’ was inspirational last week, but isn’t converting it to the scoreboard. Despite his efforts, he scored just 72, which leaves him with a disappointing average of 62. Trade while his value is still high.

ROUND 3 – 1594 PTS

ROUND 3 – 1548 PTS

ROUND 3 – 1567 PTS

The Crows have scored the fewest Fantasy points this year and have given up 19 scores of 80 or more. The Bulldogs and Tigers have conceded the next most with 16 each.

It is preferable to have as many cash cows on the bench playing as possible. With the current three trades per week, consider jumping on new rookies when they are named.

A shoulder injury is hampering Tom Mitchell’s Fantasy output. We shouldn’t be considering a trade, but it could be some time before I make him my captain again.

AT THE HEART OF RACING RECOGNISING OUTSTANDING MEMBERS OF THE QLD RACING COMMUNITY

“Seeing your horse win is like seeing one of your kids do well...you do form a bond with them that’s similar to a pet, and many people’s pets are like their kids. Above all else, you just want to see your horse do his best. “We were lucky enough to have Chile floated up to Queensland when he retired, and he’s now enjoying a second life as a healthy eleven year old equestrian horse.”

FLYING THE FLAG: More fans will be allowed into Queensland venues this weekend.

TALK E H T G TALKIN

Proceed with caution The AFL has plenty on its plate as it steers through a difficult period.

I

t all felt eerily similar. Just as the country progressively shut down on the now infamous Saturday back in late March, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced last weekend that worsening COVID-19 numbers in his state would mean some restrictions were being reimposed. And just as AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan called a press conference at half-time of Hawthorn’s clash against the Brisbane Lions in round one to announce the indefinite suspension of the season, he was back at the MCG in the middle of round three to announce the League’s first positive test – Essendon’s Conor McKenna had to immediately isolate and the side’s clash with Melbourne the following day was postponed indefinitely. As has been the case through the past few months, McLachlan remained a reassuring presence on another difficult day for the AFL. “We will be working with the Chief Medical Officer (Brett Sutton) to do the close-contact tracing with Conor,” McLachlan said. “All players and football department staff have been asked to self-isolate until that work has been done. “We said at the outset we will make all decisions on the basis of the medical advice.” There has been plenty of criticism levelled at the AFL around its decision to shorten

46  AFL RECORD

SEN.com.au

quarters in 2020, but the events of the last week vindicated the call not only to reduce playing time but shift the narrative from completing rounds to getting through games. The fixture could include multiple midweek matches as the League looks to accommodate a backlog of games if more have to be rescheduled. “Our fixture guys will work through this,” McLachlan said. “I don’t have an answer for that, but we have time and flexibility, whether we compress the season, however that looks, we are working still with the West Australians about how a return looks like there, so it will go into the mix. “We have a rolling four-week fixture, it is why we have the shorter quarters.” The news of McKenna’s positive test is not a disaster for the competition as a whole, but it’s a sharp reminder of what could go wrong if even one player is found to have potentially breached the strict protocols in place for players. There has been much said in past weeks about the level of restrictions placed on all players, especially on the back of four separate breaches which saw Essendon’s Brandon Zerk-Thatcher, Port Adelaide’s Ollie Wines and Melbourne pair Kysaiah Pickett and Charlie Spargo all suspended for round two.

We will make all decisions on the basis of the medical advice AFL CEO GILLON McLACHLAN

How and where McKenna contracted the virus will be the subject of much speculation in the coming weeks, rightly or wrongly. And if he’s found to have broken protocols, he should be suspended in line with the bans handed to other players two weeks ago. The key difference between where we stand in late June compared with late March is the added knowledge of both where the virus is in Australia and footy’s place amid the health crisis. While cases seem to be slowly increasing in Victoria, they’re virtually non-existent in Queensland – which this week will welcome up to 10,000 fans at games at Metricon Stadium and the Gabba. Things are getting better around Australia, even if there’s still plenty of work to do in Victoria. Crowds are also expected to be welcomed back in greater numbers to Giants Stadium and the SCG. Make no mistake, McKenna’s positive test is a setback for Essendon and the League generally, but with the added benefit of extensive planning, the AFL is well placed to navigate yet another aspect of the crisis while continuing to play.
