EDITOR’S LETTER
he big games continue, bringing some warmth to the depths of winter and on Thursday night the AFL resumes normal service with Brisbane hosting Geelong at the Gabba. We mean normal in the sense that with the bye rounds now complete, we are back to nine games each weekend. And normal with the likelihood that as this edition of the AFL Record goes to print, football returns to Melbourne with the MCG and Marvel Stadium both fixtured to host two games. Friday night’s MCG clash between Richmond and St Kilda will be the first at the ground for 27 days and the first to be played in front of a crowd in 33 days. GMHBA Stadium drew 6583 fans for the Geelong-Western Bulldogs game last Friday night and they witnessed a torrid affair with a cracking finish as the Cats stormed the length of the ground in just a few seconds to get the ball to Gary Rohan moments before the final siren. He calmly slotted the goal from the forward pocket, sparking scenes of delirium at the Cattery
COOL CAT: Gary Rohan is mobbed by teammates after his after-the-siren goal (left) which broke the Western Bulldogs’ hearts last week.
and the former Swan joined Barry Hall (ex-St Kilda and Sydney) as the only two players in history to kick match-winning goals after the siren for two clubs. The win was the sixth straight for the Cats and they’re now equal second on the ladder. It was the classic eight-point game and the Bulldogs will be kicking themselves at having let this one slip after getting the game played back on their terms in the final quarter and looking like the team most likely to win.
u It has been a fairly disjointed bye period, but we can now return to some sort of normality with a full book of nine games each round for the rest of the season. And starting this week, the spotlight returns to Thursday night football when the Brisbane Lions host Geelong in a blockbuster at the Gabba. Two weeks ago, the Cats and Port Adelaide played
a Thursday night classic at Adelaide Oval in the middle of the bye rounds, but now the AFL has clear air to play as many Thursday night games as it likes. Not only do Thursday night games declutter the fixture for the rest of the weekend, the League can cherry pick which games to play in this now coveted timeslot.
Scott and some jawing Lions almost had to be separated There is no fear that 14th will be playing 16th as might have been the case when the fixture used to be announced six months before the season even started. One of the by-products of football in this COVID-changing world has been the rolling fixture. And that allows flexibility when it comes to selecting games to showcase both
They have now lost their past 10 games at GMHBA Stadium. The road ahead doesn’t get any easier for the Bulldogs, who spent this week quarantined in Western Australia ahead of Sunday afternoon’s Optus Stadium clash with West Coast, in what will be a reprise of their epic, see-sawing match in round two that the Bulldogs won by seven points. But first to Thursday night. There has been some history between these two clubs, pretty much from the time dual Lions premiership player Chris Scott became coach of the Cats. Geelong thrashed Brisbane by 40 points and silenced an expectant Gabba crowd in last year’s preliminary final, but that the prized Thursday and Friday night timeslots. There was no better example than last Friday’s epic game – and finish – at GMHBA Stadium that was decided with a goal after the siren. We are tipping television networks, and their associated advertisers and sponsors, are pretty happy with games like that. May it continue this Thursday night. AFL.com.au AFL RECORD 5

ONE WEEK at a TIME was merely the placeholder for this year’s round two meeting between the clubs at GMHBA Stadium. Scott and several jawing Lions almost had to be separated at the quarter-time break and then came the final few minutes when, in just his second game for the club, former Hawk Isaac Smith put the Cats ahead with a right-foot snap. Then with just 30 seconds to go and just metres from the Lions’ goal, Geelong’s Mark Blicavs appeared to dispose of the ball incorrectly after a tackle from Zac Bailey, only for the umpire to call play on. Geelong rushed a behind and held on for a very fortunate one-point win. It sets the stage for a keenly anticipated rematch on Thursday night. The Lions will overtake the Cats and climb into third place with a win but, conversely, a Geelong victory would see it establish a two-game buffer over the Lions – and make a top-two finish for them awfully difficult. It is a huge game. The other juicy encounter is at the MCG on Saturday night as Essendon meets Melbourne.
ON A STRING: Jake Stringer guides home one of his four goals in a match-winning performance for the Bombers in front of the round’s biggest crowd, 14,834 at UTAS Stadium last week.
The Bombers answered every challenge from Hawthorn last Sunday in their first game in Tasmania for 29 years and are now just a game outside the top eight. They were sparked to victory by Jake Stringer who, in his best game yet for the Bombers, had 29 touches, six clearances, seven tackles and kicked 4.1.
He put on a show in Launceston and it could not have been more timely given he and the club are in the midst of discussions over a new contract. If he can maintain that sort of form – admittedly a big ‘if’ given his track record – he is worth whatever the Bombers can afford to pay him.
NAB AFL Rising Star HARRISON JONES ESSENDON
W
hen Essendon gave up a 40-point lead to Hawthorn in its season-opener, one of the culprits was debutant forward Harrison Jones, who sprayed them everywhere, kicking 0.3. How fitting then that the lifetime Bombers fan earned his NAB AFL Rising Star nomination in the return game with eight marks (five contested) and 2.1 in the enthralling 13-point over their hated rival at UTAS Stadium last Sunday. Jones looked dangerous whenever he had a clear path at the ball and is shaping as a target Essendon can construct its forward line around for the next decade. He has also helped Bomber fans move on quickly from the departure of Joe Daniher. The former Calder Cannon was the 30th selection at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft and with every game the Bombers are grateful they moved up the draft order to select him. ASHLEY BROWNE

osh Kennedy will play his 250th game as an Eagle on Sunday, achieving another milestone for a player who will go down as one of the club’s greatest. The 33-year-old is already the club’s all-time leading goalkicker with 662 and now adds to that legacy with every goal he kicks. In game No. 251 next week, he will pass Andrew Embley and sit eighth for most games played by a West Coast player. And if he chooses to play on in 2022, he could easily enter the top five of that list. Kennedy is already a seven-time West Coast club-leading goalkicker and has a shot at adding an eighth if he can edge out Jack Darling

this year (Kennedy is on 28, one behind Darling). His three most important goals for the Eagles came during the 2018 Grand Final. They were ultimately the difference in a low-scoring contest. All of these accolades and accomplishments would not have been possible without the trade that saw him move from Carlton to West Coast following the 2006 season. Kennedy was drafted by the Blues with the fourth pick in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft. He played 22 games in his two seasons with Carlton, kicking 11 goals and finding it tough as any young forward in a struggling side would. Carlton was heavy on tall forwards at the time, boasting one of the best in the competition in Brendan Fevola, Lance Whitnall at the end of his career, Jarrad Waite, Setanta O’hailpin and Kennedy. With that depth, the young key forward was added as the final piece of the Chris Judd trade and sent along with picks No. 3 and No. 20 to the Eagles. Judd went on to win a Brownlow Medal and three best and fairests at the Blues and has been a

prominent figure off the field, serving as the club’s football director in recent years. Kennedy, however, has played 250 games in the blue and yellow, obviously outlasting Judd given the age difference at the time of the trade. You could declare a winner if you so desired, or you could look at it as a win-win. Either way, West Coast fans would be entirely content with the situation and Kennedy will go down as one of the club’s all-time greats.

TIME TO TAKE STOCK
It’s almost the end of the financial year. Tax time. Stocktake time. Taking the date on the calendar as our cue, we at the AFL Record have run the tale of the tape over every club. Who are the bulls and the bears? Who are the underperformers? Who’s providing value money? Is there a long-term investment out there to get in on? As for footy’s All Ordinaries Index? We’re not going there. We’ll leave that one for the readers. Doubtless, there are widespread views on that. ADELAIDE CROWS Blue-chip stock: Rory Laird Forecast: It has been a steady decline in recent years, but things are stable again at West Lakes. Seen as a pink sheet proposition early in 2021, the Crows’ portfolio has lifted and is performing well above market expectations. There are likely to be fluctuations along the way, but the advice is to come along for the ride and hold at all costs.
RORY LAIRD
ANDREW SLEVISON
NIC NEGREPONTIS
CHARLIE CAMERON
Blue-chip stock: Harry McKay, Sam Walsh, Jacob Weitering, Patrick Cripps Forecast: Confidence in this stock has plummeted in the past few months, despite the anticipation over summer. Everything makes sense on paper for this stock to rise in value, but it never seems to translate when the whips are cracking. The value is low right now and you may be tempted to buy again heading into next year, but it remains untrustworthy. NIC NEGREPONTIS
BRISBANE LIONS Blue-chip stock: Lachie Neale, Charlie Cameron, Harris Andrews, Hugh McCluggage Forecast: Those who bought low in the Lions a few years back are buying Ferraris right now and the stock has held its price consistently since. It might be a bit late to jump on this bandwagon, but they’re every chance to go one step further this year and completely cash in. They’re positioned beautifully.
CARLTON
COLLINGWOOD
HARRY McKAY
Blue-chip stock: Taylor Adams, Brodie Grundy, Scott Pendlebury Forecast: The price of this stock took a significant hit in the off-season as the Magpies were forced to liquidate some significant assets. Value steadily tracked down over the first 10 weeks of the season, but confidence in the price is starting to stabilise now. Investors consider Collingwood top-heavy with strong assets, with many holdings having little value at the present. LACHLAN GELEIT

ESSENDON Blue-chip stock: Nik Cox, Darcy Parish, Zach Merrett Forecast: The Bombers’ stock was at a low ebb at the end of last year, but its value is slowly rising after a brighter than expected bounce on the market. This stock remains young, but has improved at its core. Invest now as its share price is only tipped to rise in coming months. LAURENCE ROSEN
FREMANTLE Blue-chip stock: Nat Fyfe, Andrew Brayshaw, David Mundy Forecast: Investors in Dockers stock are still patiently waiting for a ROI, although hopes are high for the future. Still a middling investment, there are enough building blocks in place to suggest that one day those bold enough not to sell are rewarded. The clock is ticking though.
GWS GIANTS Blue-chip stock: Toby Greene, Lachie Whitfield, Tim Taranto Forecast: Recently portrayed as a bellwether stock, the GWS symbol has endured a volatile shift of late. It has been a turbulent journey across the past 12 or so months, but there are positive gains being anticipated after taking on more of a blue-collar approach. If the brokers can hang on to lucrative assets such as Josh Kelly, it would forecast a profitable yield. ANDREW SLEVISON
TOBY GREENE
LAURENCE ROSEN
GEELONG CATS Blue-chip stock: Jeremy Cameron, Joel Selwood, Tom Hawkins, Patrick Dangerfield Forecast: A proven performer which made a big investment after a bullish season in 2020 when it had consistent returns – only for Dustin Martin to send its price plummeting on Grand Final night. Has looked solid in most markets in 2021 and is performing well in a tough three-game squeeze which started in round 13. MICHAEL LOVETT
PATRICK DANGERFIELD
HAWTHORN Blue-chip stock: Tom Mitchell, James Sicily, Jaeger O’Meara, Will Day, Changkuoth Jiath, Alastair Clarkson Forecast: The Hawks are the IBM of footy, the one-time dominant market leaders, now seeking to find a niche in a marketplace in which many competitors have gone past them, some of which are piloted by former key Hawthorn operatives. But the big boss – Clarkson – continues to stick fat, has yet to cash in his pension and is up for the challenge of being No. 1 again, or at least ensuring all the fundamentals are there to make certain it happens before too long. ASHLEY BROWNE
MELBOURNE Blue-chip stock: Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver, Tom McDonald, Christian Salem, Ed Langdon, Max Gawn Forecast: Many investors would have been considering their options after a lean output in 2020, but their stock has risen so much it’s almost crashed the market. Investors didn’t see this one coming, but those who stuck fat have been rewarded this year. But will Dees’ stock rise even further? That’s the key question investors will be pondering as they monitor the share market. LAURENCE ROSEN
CHRISTIAN PETRACCA
GOLD COAST SUNS Blue-chip stock: Matt Rowell, Ben King, Jack Lukosius, Izak Rankine, Noah Anderson Forecast: Long been a favourite for investors hoping for big future profits, the Suns’ price has often promised plenty without delivering any consistent dividends. The club has enough blue-chip assets to become one of the most valuable stocks League-wide, but traders are yet to see the price rise after it was tipped to spike in the off-season. AFL RECORD EOFY STOCKTAKE
NORTH MELBOURNE Blue-chip stock: Todd Goldstein, Ben Cunnington Forecast: Investing in North Melbourne is an investment in the future. You may not see a return for a while, but it’s hard to see it losing value either, given the price is at rock bottom. It picked up a potential future blue-chip asset in Jaidyn Stephenson for nothing over the summer and has pieces in place, but you will need to be patient with this one. NIC NEGREPONTIS
ST KILDA Blue-chip stock: Jack Steele, Rowan Marshall (slightly damaged goods) Forecast: Stocks have fluctuated dramatically over the past 12 months. After spiking significantly last season, they’ve plummeted to lows not seen for a couple of years – and there could be worse to come. Many expected another year of gains, but this is now an unattractive stock that you’re best to steer well clear of. You’d be kicking yourself if you jumped on this year. ALEX ZAIA
PORT ADELAIDE Blue-chip stock: Ollie Wines, Travis Boak, Zak Butters Forecast: A popular choice that gained the confidence of investors in 2020. The Power were one of the hottest stocks on the market and reached new heights after years of treading water. Their value has plateaued a touch in 2021, but still a worthwhile investment given their potential for growth. Definitely a stock worth sticking with. ALEX ZAIA
SYDNEY SWANS
WEST COAST EAGLES Blue-chip stock: Liam Ryan, Elliot Yeo, Nic Naitanui, Tim Kelly, Tom Barrass Forecast: Prices tapered after West Coast ceded four points to a resurgent Essendon in Perth, but a backs-to-the-wall performance against the Blues in Sydney and an upset of reigning premier Richmond has seen an uptick. As the market opens again after the Eagles’ bye, so too does their draw, and confidence levels in a home final are rising. NATHAN JOHN
ELLIOT YEO
Blue-chip stock: Luke Parker, Lance Franklin, Isaac Heeney Forecast: Invest now. The Swans are on the rise with multiple future blue-chip assets within their ranks. Stocks are on the right trajectory and will only increase in the coming years. Will reap the rewards if you invested when their price was dirt cheap in 2019 and 2020. Hop on before it’s too late. There is money to be made here. ALEX ZAIA
TRAVIS BOAK
LUKE PARKER
WESTERN BULLDOGS Blue-chip stock: Marcus Bontempelli, Jack Macrae, Tom Liberatore, Aaron Naughton, Alex Keath Forecast: After a small yield over the past two seasons, Scragger stocks have soared in response to a 10-3 start. Sandwiched around the bye, a brutal run featuring ladder leader Melbourne, two trips to Perth and one to Geelong coincided with a supply shortage in the midfield, but the Dogs held firm, and projections are positive with consistent performers to return for the run into finals. NATHAN JOHN
TOM LIBER ATORE
RICHMOND Blue-chip stock: Dustin Martin, Shai Bolton, Dylan Grimes Forecast: Richmond’s stocks have fluctuated somewhat in 2021, having hit an equal all-time high last year. After appearing bearish only weeks ago, things are again bullish for the Tigers. Historically, this type of activity has not been unusual at this stage of the season. Dustin Martin continues to hold as ever, while the Tigers are shooting for the moon with Shai Bolton.

absolute best, and most complete, match-winning performances of his 147-game career last weekend. Stringer helped carry Essendon over the line against Hawthorn by 13 points with an equal career-high 29 disposals in a superb display in Launceston. The dynamic midfielder/forward booted four goals, produced 10 inside 50s, laid seven tackles and had six clearances, including four centre clearances. He also provided a game-high 12 score involvements and had 18 contested possessions. Remarkably, Stringer had eight touches and kicked a goal in each of the first three quarters before adding five more disposals and a fourth major in the final term. The highlight of Stringer’s day had more than just a hint of Euros fever about it as he toe-poked the ball from inside the centre square into his path before running on and expertly soccering a spinning ball home. He hopes his powerful display is a sign of things to come. “I had a really good pre-season,” he said on Fox Footy post-match. “I’ve just been unlucky with little injuries that have popped up, but I’m really confident with where I’m at right now. Hopefully it’s just the start.” Stringer, who joined the Bombers from the Western Bulldogs at the end of 2017, has kicked 20 goals in nine matches this season. He is close to joining a rare group to kick 100 goals or more at two clubs, having booted 160 for the Bulldogs and 98 for Essendon. ANDREW SLEVISON

WE WERE THERE WHEN AUSTRALIA GAVE ONE OF I BEST RUCKMEN TO AMERI Some years back, Ben Simmons had to choose between two games he loved. One of his footy team mates at the time is now among Australia’s best. Ben himself ended up deciding on basketball and what a stupendous decision that was. His days as a ruckman might have ended prematurely, but his love of Four’N Twenty pies hasn’t wavered.

Shaun Burgoyne played his first match during the 2002 season. Where does he rank in terms of the number of AFL seasons played in? JAYNE DRISCOLL, VIA EMAIL GP: Burgoyne (Port Adelaide and Hawthorn) is equal fourth on the list and is poised to join the exclusive 400-game club. There must be something in the air at Essendon, as five Bombers are in the top 13. Not only is Dustin Fletcher the clear leader, he is also the second oldest to play in the AFL, at 40 years and 23 days, and won a premiership aged just 18 in his first season. Michael Tuck won a flag at Hawthorn in his last season, aged 38. Kevin Bartlett of Richmond had a run of 173 consecutive games that came to an end in his second-last season. As well as longevity, a few on the list below can also claim the highest individual honour. Dick Reynolds won three Brownlow Medals at the Bombers and Saint Robert Harvey and Gary Ablett jnr (Geelong and Gold Coast) won two each. Ted Whitten snr’s career at Footscray ended in 1970. His son, Ted Whitten jnr, played his first game for the Dogs just four years later.

CAN YOU ASSIST? u The AFL is seeking information on the following past players – Colin Wilson (Melbourne 1954-59), Jim Sandral (Melbourne 1956-57), Keith Carroll (Melbourne 1952-58), Ken Melville (Melbourne 1953-56), Noel Clarke (Melbourne 1951-55), Bob Matlock (South Melbourne 1944-46), Jack Dankert (South Melbourne 1944-45; 1947), Max Oaten (South Melbourne 1956-62), Adrian Campbell (Footscray/ Melbourne 1988-90; 1992-93), Brian Gilmore (Footscray 1952-58), Bernie Laffey (Footscray 1949) and Bill Kelly (Footscray 1950).
u Tony Modra made his debut for Adelaide in round four, 1992, and kicked 21 goals for the year. The following season he kicked 129 goals, which included bags of 10 against Richmond and North Melbourne plus another 13 in the return match against the Tigers later in the year. In the opening round of 1994, the Crows hosted Carlton at Football Park. The Blues had lost the previous year’s Grand Final, while Adelaide had finished third. After an even first quarter, the Crows kicked 7.8 to no score in the second to set up a 58-point lead at half-time. The high-flying Modra, who was dubbed ‘Godra’ by his fans, marked strongly and booted three goals in each of the first two quarters and two in the third. In the final term, he kicked five of Adelaide’s six goals to finish the match with a personal tally of 13.3. After the 1998 season, Modra moved to Fremantle for a couple of seasons, where his best effort was 10 goals against Melbourne in 1999. He finished his career at the end of 2001 with 588 goals from 165 matches. MARK GENGE

INJURY CHECK
SHADES OF GRAY, BUT HE’LL BE BACK u Durability has been one of the features
of Robbie Gray’s outstanding career. The Port Adelaide star has been a constant in a side that has started to emerge as a serious contender in recent seasons. Apart from a ruptured ACL in 2012 which restricted him to just two games, Gray has been a consistent performer, with his skills and match-winning quality setting him apart from the rest. He deserved to celebrate his 250th game in style last week, but instead faces surgery and an eight-week stint on the sidelines after injuring his knee in the Power’s 50-point win over Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium. Gray strained his medial ligament in the second quarter and had to be subbed out at half-time. That meant he had to acknowledge his milestone wearing a tracksuit top and a knee brace before a small turnout on the Gold Coast and a long way from the Alberton faithful.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u One of the most underrated Fantasy players in the competition is Jarryd Lyons (161). He fills the stat line each week and posted his best numbers for the year in Hobart in round 14. More than 1200 coaches brought in the Lion for his 36 disposals, six marks and 12 tackles. Lyons’ 161 was his fifth score greater than 120 this season and he now ranks third for total points scored in 2021. A worthy point of difference in your team as he only appears in four per cent of Fantasy Classic squads.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
u Tim Taranto (145) is averaging 117 this season and has been putting up epic numbers, with three 140-plus scores in his past seven appearances. The Fantasy breakout of Ollie Wines (154) keeps getting better with a career-high 43 disposals against the Suns as the Power racked up the most points combined for the final bye round. Tom
Mitchell (134) loves playing at University of Tasmania Stadium and his 36 disposals were complemented by eight tackles and a goal.

CONNOR IDUN GWS, DEF – 84 u Underrated starting pick. Playing all but one game, Idun is averaging 63 points in the Giants’ backline.

FWD/MID, $524,000 u Finally the byes are over, which means the former Pie’s time is also over for coaches who held him to cover a position in round 14. Has been a disappointment, averaging just 71, with a season-high of just 87. A far cry from his best at the Pies.
TOM POWELL
NORTH MELBOURNE
MID/FWD, $450,000 u For many bye-conscious coaches, the Roo rookie has held his spot all the way up until this point, playing 13 games at an impressive average of 69. But the time has come for the young gun to go after scoring 60 and dropping $6K.

u The Brownlow medallist has bottomed out in price after dropping $1K on the back of 111. He looked to be back to his best with two games under his belt following injury, collecting 30 possessions and laying 10 tackles against the Roos. ALSO CONSIDER: Brad Crouch, Luke Edwards, Luke Foley
u It has been a slow return to form for the superstar Cat, but the signs are there after overcoming a serious ankle injury. An absolute bargain for non-owners in the coming weeks, but hold tight and trade around him. ALSO CONSIDER: Bailey Dale, Nick Hind, Nic Newman

u Thankfully the byes are behind us and we can now focus on cementing a finals spot. I’ll be aiming for the top four in my leagues for the double chance.
u I tell myself every year not to pick a player at top dollar, but I couldn’t resist with Darcy Parish last week. I should have gone with Tom Mitchell.
u I’ve moved into the top 1500 coaches overall, which was part of the plan heading into the byes. I am now left with just two rookies on my field.

Match Preview
u Port Adelaide hosts Sydney on Saturday night in a match that could determine the finals fate of both clubs come the end of the season. The Power are chasing a top-four finish and the all-important double chance, while the Swans – who have looked vulnerable in recent weeks – have a season-defining month coming up. John Longmire’s side travels to Adelaide to play the Power followed by difficult matches against West Coast, the Western Bulldogs and cross-town rival GWS. Sydney was well beaten by lowly Hawthorn in its previous match before last week’s bye. Port Adelaide returned to the winners’ list with an easy 50-point win over struggling Gold Coast in

Robbie Gray’s 250th game. Gray’s knee injury put a dampener on the win, with the four-time All-Australian expected to miss up to eight weeks with a torn left medial ligament. The result kept Ken Hinkley’s men withing touching distance of the top four with only percentage separating them and fourth-placed Brisbane. An interesting subplot to this match is Port intercept defender Aliir Aliir playing against his old club for the first time. Aliir has starred for the Power and is in the conversation for the recruit of the year following his departure from the Harbour City. Port Adelaide has won its past four games against the Swans, including the previous two meetings at Adelaide Oval. ALEX ZAIA

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne
Crow call the right one Despite a serious injury to young Saint Hunter Clark, the Tribunal was correct in clearing Adelaide’s David Mackay.
COLLISION SPORT: While the AFL has taken great strides to make the game as safe as possible, accidents on the field, such as that involving David Mackay and Hunter Clark (inset) in round 13, will continue to happen.
M
any years ago during a Hawthorn game at Whitten Oval, a tall, elderly spectator watching the game somewhere on the outer wing couldn’t help himself when a Hawks player didn’t commit himself fully at a contest just in front of where he was standing. “Attack the ball!” he commanded as he leaned forward. Those standing around him were pretty sure of the identity of the aggrieved spectator in their midst, but the booming voice confirmed it. It was John Kennedy snr, the club’s three-time premiership coach, spiritual leader and godfather and he was simply enunciating what has been the No. 1 objective of the game since its inception in 1858 – be first to the ball. It is the basic instruction, drilled into any young player from the first time they lace up their first football boots. Go and get the ball. Do it within the framework of the rules, but get the ball. I remember back to my ancient, obscure and very low-level playing days when the weekly instruction from the umpire was something along the lines of: “I’ll look after the player who’s first in for the ball.” The thing about football is that, at its core, it’s a contact sport. Fit and strong blokes (and now, women) moving at speed chasing an oval-shaped ball whose bounce is unpredictable. And getting there first. Footy, however, isn’t just a contact sport. It’s a collision sport. And while
94 AFL RECORD
the AFL has taken commendable steps to make the game as safe as it can be, accidents on the field still happen. Which was the case when Adelaide’s David Mackay cannoned into St Kilda’s Hunter Clark in round 13, while both were contesting the footy. Mackay, a scrupulously fair player, caused serious damage. Clark’s jaw was broken in three places, and he won’t be playing for the Saints for between six and eight weeks. Match Review Officer Michael Christian could not find the grounds to sanction Mackay or send him to the Tribunal, but the AFL intervened anyway, and it led to one of the most anticipated Tribunal hearings in recent memory. It was a lead-up that divided the game like few issues before it, with superstars and respected commentators each lining up, often sharply, behind different points of view. After replay after replay of the incident – you couldn’t help but see it multiple times if you consumed any AFL media at all – there were those who felt Mackay could have taken steps to mitigate the severity of the contact. Others felt that even if contact was unavoidable or as the Tribunal
The Tribunal is there to enforce the rules, not to write them
eventually ruled, “not unreasonable” in the circumstances, a suspension was warranted because of the serious injury to Clark. Then there were those who argued that as the rules of the game were written – and given how the AFL works – the Tribunal had no authority to hand out a sanction and, in doing so, rewrite the laws of the game. Broadcaster and 1988 Brownlow medallist Gerard Healy perhaps put it best when he said the Tribunal had no power to suspend Mackay “because they are applying tomorrow’s answers to today’s incident.” Healy gets most things in footy right, and he nailed this one. By referring the incident to the Tribunal and supported by his comments the following day, AFL football operations general manager Steve Hocking said the League would continue to explore every measure to make the game safer and that rules to protect the health and safety of all players will always be under review. That is a development that anyone who truly cares for the game would welcome. The AFL has made great strides and will continue to do so in making the game safer while still enshrining its physical nature. Kennedy would have nothing to complain about with modern football, which is played at breakneck speed and requires courage and physicality from its participants. But changes need to come through the correct internal mechanisms and signed off by the Commission. The Tribunal is there to enforce the rules, not to write them. @hashbrowne
