AFL’S JUGGLING ACT STARTS AGAIN
Our thoughts are with all Victorians in what we know is a difficult period AFL CEO GILLON McLACHLAN ON THE RESCHEDULING OF MATCHES IN VICTORIA

he AFL season has reached the midway point and once again there is a sense of foreboding engulfing the entire competition. For the second successive season, the AFL is playing the juggling game as it moves games around the country following yet another major COVID-19 outbreak in Victoria. With the Northern Territory borders closed to Victoria, Friday night’s Melbourne-Brisbane blockbuster has been moved away from Alice Springs, while St Kilda-Sydney (Marvel Stadium), the Essendon-Richmond Dreamtime Game and Carlton-West Coast (both
The Lions have looked superb the last few weeks
u The 2021 season might have hit a few speed humps in recent weeks, but the latest COVID-19 setback in Victoria has again proved that the AFL can adapt at a moment’s notice. With the entire state in lockdown, three games were able to proceed in Melbourne last weekend. Sadly, given it was the opening week of Sir Doug Nicholls Round, fans in Darwin
scheduled at the MCG) have already been moved. Richmond, Essendon and Carlton have each remained interstate following last week’s games, while ahead of their clash with Fremantle in Perth next Sunday, the Western Bulldogs also skipped town and have set up camp in Sydney ahead of a lightning weekend trip to Western Australia. Thankfully for the AFL, the bye rounds are now underway, which means only six games for each of
were denied the chance to see the Gold Coast Suns host Hawthorn, with the game moved to the SCG last Saturday night. And last Sunday’s Richmond v Adelaide clash was shifted from the MCG to Giants Stadium after the Victoria-South Australian border was closed following a COVID outbreak in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. For those of us who live in Victoria, it was a feeling of
the next three weekends and a slightly easier task for the AFL as it deals with the various dislocations and relocations. Sadly for Melbourne fans, Victoria’s lockdown meant they weren’t able to get to Marvel Stadium for their rampaging club’s most complete performance of the year, a 28-point dismantling of the red-hot Western Bulldogs. The Demons saw off a fellow premiership aspirant by choking their trademark run from half-back and creating all sorts of scoring opportunities for themselves via turnovers. And now they run headlong into another side likely to be jostling with them for the flag come late September. Brisbane has won seven in a row, putting its own early-season COVID dislocation issues behind it with each passing week. The Lions jumped GWS early at the Gabba and cruised to a 65-point win, although a mitigating factor might have been the Giants’ nightmare preparation that included arriving at the airport the day before for their flight to Brisbane only to be turned away and told to come back the following morning, only a few hours before the game. Still, the Lions have looked superb the past few weeks and have coped brilliantly with a notable injury list that includes Brownlow medallist Lachie Neale, Cam Rayner, Jarrod Berry and Darcy Gardiner. This is the only meeting between these clubs in the home and away season, so there will be plenty at stake on Friday night. Unfortunately, just not in front of the football-mad residents of Alice Springs.
resignation. We’ve been there, done that, although at the time of writing it seems the latest lockdown has gone from circuit-breaker to longer term. But the AFL’s fixturing team could be excused for letting out a collective moan when it became apparent some games would again have to be played behind closed doors and others shifted to different states and venues.
There will be no games in Victoria this week, including the big Dreamtime at the ’G clash between Essendon and Richmond, which will now be played at Optus Stadium. You also have to feel for fans in the Northern Territory where big celebrations had been planned around Sir Doug Nicholls Round. Let’s hope the Top End is rewarded with some extra games in 2022. ONE WEEK at a TIME Surging Essendon meets Richmond in the Dreamtime clash, which has been shifted to Optus Stadium. It is the most significant game between these clubs for many years and the Bombers, who have won their past three games, will replace the Tigers in the eight with a win. Essendon fans were cock-a-hoop last Saturday, and rightfully so. Coming from 29 points behind to beat the Eagles on the road was the clearest sign yet the Bombers are finally on the path to success. They’d already be in the eight if they somehow hadn’t blown a 40-point lead to lowly Hawthorn in the season-opener. The Tigers started slowly against Adelaide before taking control in the second term. But they needed some magic from Jack Riewoldt to close it out. The veteran spearhead took a courageous contested mark while crashing sight unseen into a pack – reminiscent of the incredible mark his cousin Nick Riewoldt took at the SCG in 2004 – and kicked three last-quarter goals. The Tigers are starting to get their best team back together and the competition for places in the

side is heating up, so this should be a great game. And Optus Stadium, with all its hi-tech bells and whistles will deliver a spectacular Dreamtime occasion. Western Australia has provided a steady stream of indigenous champions such as Graham ‘Polly’
Farmer, Barry Cable, Jim and Phil Krakouer, Nicky Winmar, Stephen Michael, Peter Matera and Lance Franklin, to name just a few, and could not be a more deserving custodian, albeit it temporary, of this showpiece game.

y virtue of playing just nine games for Melbourne in 2020, Trent Rivers remained eligible for nomination for the 2021 NAB AFL Rising Star Award for this season. Through 11 games for the ladder-leading Demons this year, the rebounding half-back has averaged 15.8 disposals and 1.5 intercept marks a game. Against the Western Bulldogs last Friday night, Rivers had 19 touches and three marks as the Demons won by 28 points to move back on top of the ladder. Originally from Willetton, located south of the Perth CBD, he was a second-round selection (No. 32) by the Demons at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft. Indeed, the club thought highly enough of him after those nine games in 2020 that it signed him to a contract extension through until the end of 2023. ASHLEY BROWNE

oming into the 2021 season, Essendon’s prospects were shrouded in doubt. On the back of a tumultuous off-season which saw the departure of three high-profile players in Joe Daniher, Orazio Fantasia and Adam Saad, coupled with rookie coach Ben Rutten taking the reins for the first time, there was genuine mystery as to how the Bombers would go in a year that was widely tipped to be a developmental one. After a promising start which has seen them win five games playing a sustainable and dependable brand of football, those expectations could be about to be altered as we enter the second half of the season. Rutten’s crowning moment as senior coach came last Saturday night, when his young side fought back from a 29-point deficit away from home against West Coast to record a club-defining 16-point victory. It was the first time the Eagles have lost at Optus Stadium all year. “It was huge. It was a fantastic effort. There is a lot of uncertainty at the moment, so to come over here and focus on our job and do what we needed to do was great,” Rutten said. “The boys showed huge spirit and character and it’s something we’re going to have to draw upon in our journey moving forward. It was a significant game for us.”

ALL SMILES: The spirited win over the Eagles was evidence the Bombers are tracking in the right direction, much to the delight of coach Ben Rutten (right).
Much has been made of Essendon’s suite of 2021 draft picks – with last year’s pick nine Archie Perkins playing his best game against West Coast – but the Bombers’ improvement has largely come from established players finding a defined role and for that Rutten deserves immense credit. Jayden Laverde has found a home down back after several injury-hit years up forward, while fellow top-20 draft pick Kyle Langford is starting to show positive signs after an inconsistent start to his career. Zach Merrett and Darcy Parish, alongside Andrew McGrath, have quickly become a formidable midfield trio, while Cale Hooker looks reborn in his forward role.

700 CAREER GOALS And the rebuild is being shaped without regulars such as Dylan Shiel, Devon Smith and Michael Hurley, while No. 1 ruckman Sam Draper is also sidelined. This weekend’s Dreamtime clash against Richmond at Optus Stadium promises to be another litmus test for the reborn Bombers. Whether they can conquer the reigning premier remains to be seen, but 11 rounds in there’s a sense that after a long period in the wilderness, Essendon is finally building something viable.

DREAMTIME BELIEVERS Former Richmond star and Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy felt as though he owed his old Tiger mates a favour. So he devised the now hugely successful Dreamtime Game. ASHLEY BROWNE & ANDREW SLEVISON
L
ike much in modern football, the fingerprints of Kevin Sheedy are all over the Dreamtime Game. The game’s greatest impresario, whose motto in life is surely “never die wondering”, conceived the game for a couple of reasons. The first was a tinge of guilt. By that stage (2005), Sheedy had brought up a quarter of a century as coach of Essendon, but he was also an icon of Richmond, a three-time premiership player and former captain. His inspiration for the annual Anzac Day Essendon-Collingwood blockbuster was the 1977 game he played in for the Tigers against
8 AFL RECORD
the Magpies (it was Tom Hafey’s first game as coach of the Pies against the club he coached to four premierships) and was attended by 92,436 fans at a jam-packed MCG. That planted a seed in Sheedy’s mind that took nearly two decades to germinate, but it was the Bombers and not the Tigers who came together with Collingwood in 1995 to create the game that, preliminary and

Grand Finals aside, is the biggest played each year. In an interview with Yokayi Footy on AFL.com.au in 2020, Sheedy said he heard some disappointment from his Richmond mates once the Anzac Day game morphed into a huge event. “Richmond were very disappointed in losing Anzac Day because I gave that to Collingwood obviously,” he said.

“A good friend of mine said you didn’t give us Anzac Day, so give us (another) game.” The Dreamtime game idea was simple in one respect. The black and red of Essendon and the famous yellow and black of the Tigers when combined represent the colours of the aboriginal flag. But Sheedy wanted there to be a nod to football history as well. Back in 2005, Maurice Rioli and Michael Long were arguably the two greatest indigenous players in the game’s history. “They both played their great games in Grand Finals when most non-indigenous people said, felt and heard that aboriginal boys couldn’t play under pressure,” he said. “(Now) Five of the Norm Smith Medals (Andrew McLeod twice and Cyril Rioli in addition to Maurice Rioli and Long) have come out of the Northern Territory … that’s one of the greatest stories of our game.” The first Dreamtime at the ’G game took place in round 15, 2005, which the Tigers won by 26 points. It was the first and only one played during the day. It was a standalone game the following year, a two-point win to the Tigers. With more than 58,000 at the MCG, the AFL came to understand it was on to a good thing and that there was a yearning across the entire competition to start recognising the incredible contribution made by the game’s indigenous community. In 2007, Indigenous Round was introduced with recognition and celebrations across the country, including the one-off jumpers that have been embraced by supporters and fly off the shelves every year.
But the centrepiece has always been the Dreamtime Game at the MCG and only twice since 2011 (one of those was 2016 when the Bombers were serving their supplements scandal penalty and were barely competitive) has it drawn fewer than 80,000. Last year’s game drew just 5000 fans, but of course it was played in Darwin due to the COVID-19 pandemic that engulfed the country and forced football to flee Victoria. What was lost in crowd numbers was made up for in spectacle as the Top End staged a superb event. In the eyes of many, it was the year the Dreamtime Game returned home. And it hits the road once more on Saturday night with footy in Melbourne yet again shut down because of the pandemic. And if it can’t be staged at the MCG or Darwin, then why not the magnificent Optus Stadium given that so many of the game’s greatest indigenous players hail from Western Australia.

bout all that has been missing from Dreamtime games since are a bunch of memorable matches. In 2005, the Bombers were coming off a sixth-place finish and, given they haven’t won a finals match since, have been a relatively mediocre side. Richmond was entering what it hoped would be the start of a new and exciting era under Terry Wallace, but in reality the Tigers were in the midst of a finals drought that continued until 2013. Sadly, in the 16 years of Dreamtime, neither side has been great at the same time, but still, there have been some memorable encounters.

Club icon Matthew Richardson forced Mal Michael under the ball, took a strong mark, turned and played on before dobbing a goal on the run from just inside 50. However, umpire Brett Allen had paid a push in the back to Michael before adding salt to the wound with a 50m penalty. The Bombers made the most of their good fortune, kicking two behinds (one courtesy of Bachar Houli), before Matthew Lloyd sunk the dagger into the heart of the Tigers by converting after the siren. Legend has it that an email with a new ‘hands in the back’ interpretation was sent around that week in the lead-up. It was a very ‘Richmondy’ moment at the time.

player who epitomises hard work and sacrificing their game for the good of the team. They do the less-visible things that often fly under the radar, but internally they certainly don’t go unnoticed. In round 11, one Brisbane Lions player who so frequently pours his blood, sweat and tears into the little things finally tasted some of the sweet rewards. Mitch Robinson had an afternoon to remember as the Lions trounced GWS by 64 points at the Gabba in Sir Doug Nicholls Round. Robinson racked up 30 disposals, including 24 kicks, with a massive 689 metres gained, while taking 12 marks. It was the first time he had reached 30 touches since round 10, 2018. The hard-working 31-year-old also booted a career-high four goals, having kicked three on multiple occasions across his 221-game career. His bag of four included a brilliant snap from the boundary in the final term to put an exclamation mark on his day. With plenty of support from captain Dayne Zorko, who picked up 35 disposals and kicked two goals, Robinson ran riot as the Lions further enhanced their credentials as a genuine premiership threat. Robinson started the season slowly, but just like most of his Brisbane teammates, hit his straps in May, averaging 25 touches over five games. ANDREW SLEVISON

WE WERE THERE WHE N BROWNY WAS HUNGRY FOR FLAGS. From Warrnambool to the MCG, via Brisbane, is a long journey. That’s the route that took Jonathan Brown to the top of footy’s tree. He had an appetite for Premierships, helping his club to three on the trot. Four’N Twenty was there for every one of them. Savouring past glory makes Browny a hungry guy and we’re proud to supply the pies.

What are some of the most unusual names of players in AFL/VFL history? BRAD WILLIS, PERTH, WA LE: We have seen plenty of unique player names, from legends to one-hit wonders. Stuart Stewart was a star defender for the Hawks in the 1920s and ’30s. Recruited from Ararat, he always played with great spirit, even though he won only 24 of his 130 games for a success rate of just 19 per cent. North Melbourne’s Tristan Xerri created history when he made his debut in 2020, becoming the first player with a surname starting with X. Melbourne pair Bruce Pie and Hollington (Bill) London both played just one game in their careers, due to injuries and work commitments. Pie made his lone appearance in round two, 1926, and performed well. Unfortunately, he was forced to miss the following week and never played again. He later became president of the Queensland Football League from 1935-38, served as a politician and was the founder of textile manufacturer Pie Industries. London
X-FACTOR: Big Roo Tristan Xerri is the only player in history with a name starting with X; (inset) Port Adelaide’s Orazio Fantasia.

was a full-forward and showed promise in his only game in round 16, 1928, but his career was cut short by a knee injury. James ‘Captain’ Cook was a tall leading forward and had his biggest impact at his second club, the Western Bulldogs, kicking 96 goals in 49 games. Port Adelaide’s Orazio Fantasia is one of the best small forwards in the game. After 80 games and 111 goals across seven seasons for Essendon, he moved to the Power at the end of 2020. Channel Seven commentator Brian Taylor loves calling “ORAZZZIIIOO FANNTASSIAA!” every time he goes near the ball.
CAN YOU ASSIST? u The AFL is seeking information regarding the following past players – Les Crawley (Melbourne 1948), Ray Hutchins (Melbourne 1950-51), Craig Lowrie (Melbourne 1948, 1950; Fitzroy 1951-52), Arthur Pound (Melbourne 1950), Ern Rowarth (Melbourne 1945-47), Tom Miller (Footscray 1947-50), Les Parker (Footscray 1948), Ron Pocock (Footscray 1949), Jack Storey (Footscray 1948-49), Bob Templeton (Footscray 1947-49, 1953), Jack Atkinson (Richmond 1950), Kevin Webb (Richmond 1949; Melbourne 1951).
blistering pace to start the 1971 season. In the opening round against Footscray at Victoria Park, the Magpies were merciless, booting 11.2 in the first quarter to lead by 43 points at the first break. It was as if they were on a mission to make amends after losing their previous game, the 1970 Grand Final, which they led by 44 points at half-time. A dominant Des Tuddenham kicked the opening goal and finished the quarter with five. Collingwood went on to kick 25.10 (160) for an 83-point victory. Tuddenham finished with nine goals and 40 disposals, while Peter McKenna, Wayne Richardson and Len Thompson kicked four goals each. Richardson also collected 33 kicks and 12 handballs. Playing for the Dogs that day was 19-year-old Bernie Quinlan and 21-year-old Barry Round. Ten years later, they were equal winners in the Brownlow Medal. By the end of the season though, Collingwood couldn’t avenge its previous year’s disappointment, finishing in fourth place after losing the first semi-final to Richmond by 44 points. MARK GENGE

INJURY CHECK
PAIN IN THE NECK FOR STAR PIE u Collingwood big man Brodie
Grundy might have qualified for the strangest injury of the 2021 season after he was forced from the field during the third quarter of last Saturday’s clash with Geelong. Grundy flew for a marking contest with Cats opponent Rhys Stanley and seconds later was writhing on the ground in agony, clutching his right shoulder and neck area. At first it looked like the contact was fairly innocuous, but replays showed Grundy’s head had virtually whip-lashed
20 AFL RECORD
in the collision. Grundy was subbed out immediately and taken to hospital for scans which later revealed he had suffered a pinched nerve. It was a major blow for Grundy and the Magpies who were just starting to work their way back into the game in the third term after a goalless opening half. To make matters worse for the 2-9 Magpies, skipper Scott Pendelbury appeared to be at less than 100 per cent and spent most of the game camped in the forward line.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u A shift of venue didn’t concern Touk Miller (160) as he went about racking up his highest score of the
year. His 37 disposals, nine marks, seven tackles and a goal were impressive and helped the Gold Coast Suns to a big win over Hawthorn. Miller is enjoying a fantastic season, averaging 118, the third-highest in the competition, yet he has just one per cent ownership. With half of his scores 130 or more, Miller is one of the Fantasy Draft selections of the year, with his average draft pick being 61.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
u Once again Jack Macrae (147) and Tim Taranto (143) were among the top scorers for the round, proving their worth as must-have premium midfielders. Zach Merrett (132) has also been a consistent pick. Mitch Robinson (147) and Jack Riewoldt (140) kicked four and five goals respectively as they posted their highest scores of the season. With a price tag under $500K, Isaac Heeney (135) was a downgrade from some of the fully-priced cash cows. And what a return – 14 marks and three goals!

SAM FLANDERS GCS, MID/FWD – 84 u Flanders’ 13th game was his best. The small forward had 19 disposals, five marks and five tackles. Look to stash him in your Keeper League as his junior numbers were great, averaging 23 disposals at the 2019 under-18 championships. NED REEVES HAW, RUC – 81 u Sharing duties with skipper Ben McEvoy, he had 35 hit-outs, more than the Suns’ rucks combined.

DEVEN ROBERTSON BL, MID/FWD – 79 u Still making cash and posting worthy scores. Had 19 disposals and five marks. LACHIE JONES PA, DEF – 73 u A lot of faith showed by the club bringing him straight in off an ankle injury. Plenty of cash to make. TRENT BIANCO COLL, DEF/MID – 71 u More than 14,000 coaches brought him in as the pick of the $170K players last week.

MID, $648,000 u It’s a big call because you only get the Blues skipper for one week before his bye, but if it works for your structure, jump on. He has had three triple-figure scores in a row. Has a BE of 64 and his 17 per cent ownership is set to skyrocket.
ISAAC HEENEY
SYDNEY SWANS
FWD, $539,000 u We have been flagging the high-flying Swan’s ridiculously low price for the past three weeks and he rewarded his seven per cent of coaches. Has averaged 109 in his past three after a whopping 135 against the Blues.

FWD, $451,000 u ‘De Goat’ had a first quarter we have come to expect this year, playing forward and doing nothing for eight points. That was before moving to the midfield and dominating the last three with a whopping 101 points in that time. Has a BE of 38.
JORDAN RIDLEY

DEF, $570,000 u The star defender hasn’t been the same since his injury, but it is still worth holding him and removing rookies from your ground. You can always reassess at his bye.

FWD/MID, $530,000 u If the former Pie running machine is still in your team, it’s a great time to remove him given he has the bye. Has averaged 75, well below what faithful coaches projected. Will have a BE of 85 upon return.
CHAD WARNER
SYDNEY SWANS
FWD/MID, $475,000 u After an amazing start to the year, the Swans young gun has slowed up, averaging just 62 in his past three. Would be handy over the first two bye rounds, but his price is on the decline, dropping $21K this week after his 52.

NORTH MELBOURNE

FWD/MID, $471,000
u The young Pie impressed in his debut and looks the perfect downgrade to navigate the first two weeks of the bye. Had a massive first quarter, eventually finishing with 19 touches, three marks and three tackles for 71.
u The cash cow turned cash fowl this week with a price drop of -$13K after his dreaded ‘injury sub’ score of 12. Carries a BE of 50 but his value is in his bye round of 14. He must be close to getting a full game, which would help cover bye players.
u The hard-working youngster has been sensational in his debut season, averaging 70. But his scoring has dried up, with a three-game average under 50 and, given he has the bye this week, it is the perfect time to offload.

u Throughout the bye rounds you should aim to make your team better with the three trades available each round. Ship off your rookies who have made their cash and bring in players after their bye.
u It has been a tough start for destROY this year, but things are moving in the right direction. I’m inside the top 5000 coaches for the first time and by the end of the byes, it’ll be top 1000.
u Don’t get caught out with the captain’s loophole by putting your ‘C’ on someone who is an emergency. You risk of them being the sub or a late in. Some copped Finlay Macrae’s score of 12 last week. Ouch.

TOGETHER AS ONE
u Essendon VFLW star Courtney Ugle always thought of football as more than just a sport, and even more than a career. Growing up in Noongar Boodja Country in Western Australia, sport was a common language for Ugle that allowed her to connect with her peers, and to share common interests and goals with a diverse range of people. When choosing to pursue a career in women’s football, it also provided her with a platform to share her culture and bring others in on that journey. “Life doesn’t give you too many opportunities to simply walk into a situation

with a group of strangers and know that you’re all on the same page,” Ugle said. “For me, the AFL and footy bring people together. Playing professionally also allows me to connect with other people all over the country. “I can speak to people I’ve never met before because we share an interest that is so intrinsic to our identity. “One of the ways Aboriginal people can connect with their culture and ancestors is through sport. By sharing these connections with my teammates, I am able to forge deeper bonds.” Ugle joined the Victorian Government campaign Deadly & Proud, which features Aboriginal storytellers who share stories of pride in Aboriginal cultures, resilience, community and Victoria’s historic path towards treaty and truth.
UNITED: Courtney Ugle wants everyone to share in her journey.

DASHING PIE: Jack Crisp was among the best in Collingwood’s hard-fought win over the Crows last season.
Played 44: Adelaide Crows 15, Collingwood 28, draws 1. Since 2016: Adelaide Crows 1, Collingwood 3, draws 1. Most recent game: round 11, 2020, Adelaide Crows lost to Collingwood by 24 points at Adelaide Oval. Highest attendance: 88,960, first preliminary final, 2002, at the MCG.

Match Preview
u There were some bright moments for the Crows
against Richmond last weekend, including a four-goal lead in the first quarter and a fightback in the final term that had Tiger fans momentarily concerned. Adelaide cut Richmond open early with precise ball movement and the forward line combination of Taylor Walker, Darcy Fogarty and Riley Thilthorpe caused a few headaches. Back home, where they handed Melbourne its only defeat of the season only a fortnight ago, the Crows should be confident of beating a Collingwood side that has plumbed new depths. The Magpies kicked just 1.11 to three-quarter time at the MCG against Geelong last Saturday in conditions that were perfect, save

for there being no fans. With the shackles off, they kicked five goals in the final term with Jordan De Goey given freedom to play up the ground, but there are always these positional conundrums at Collingwood. De Goey on the ball or up forward? Darcy Moore back or forward? Wherever that pair don’t play leaves the Magpies badly exposed in that part of the ground. The Pies will also be without ruckman Brodie Grundy, whose homecoming has been curtailed by a shoulder injury that will sideline him for up to three weeks. Time to see what Darcy Cameron offers as the No. 1 ruckman. Taylor Adams will miss for a similar period as Grundy, although Jamie Elliott could return. It all points to a win for the home team. ASHLEY BROWNE

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne
The show must go on Another COVID outbreak has the AFL fixturing team working feverishly to keep the season going.
W
e’re no longer living in the year of COVID. We’re now living in the era of COVID and, as the history of the game is recorded, that’s what it will be called, as much as it was during both world wars. This is the second season the fixture has been impacted in a major way by this pandemic. The disruptions in Queensland and Western Australia were severe enough earlier in the season and caused major dislocation for their respective AFL clubs. But when Victoria is affected in the manner it has over the past fortnight, leaving most of the clubs scrambling and quite literally not knowing week to week where they’re playing next, then we’re looking for new descriptors. Disastrous? Chaotic? Catastrophic? Already, the financial costs are severe. West Coast, despite a bank balance that small African nations would dream of owning, has lost its home derby against Fremantle for two successive seasons. Even the Eagles would be feeling the pinch after that. Still counting the cost of losing their season-opener against Collingwood at Marvel Stadium last year, the Western Bulldogs never got around to selling a single public ticket for last week’s top-of-the-table clash against Melbourne. Given that all corporate tickets had been sold, there was every indication of a sell-out crowd and a huge revenue injection for the club. Between the Suns, the Demons and the AFL, there will have to be

some make good with the Northern Territory Government after both the Darwin and Alice Springs games had to be moved away. Essendon is the home team for the Dreamtime Game this weekend. It won’t be at the MCG as scheduled and it remains to be seen how much the Bombers can recoup from the game at Optus Stadium, although early indications are that a bumper crowd will attend. The clubs have been as flexible and agile as ever. Carlton, Richmond and the Western Bulldogs have become temporary Sydney residents, while Essendon resides in WA for the time being. Live in Perth but don’t follow the Eagles or the Dockers? You now have a third option. All sorts of fixturing history was made during the COVID-riddled 2020 season, but some more was made last weekend. For the first time in AFL history, two League games were played simultaneously in a city other than Melbourne, with the opening bounce of the Sydney-Carlton game at the SCG taking place at around the start of the second half of the Richmond-Adelaide game over at Giants Stadium. With the Suns-Hawks game there the night before, the New South Wales Government came to the aid
of the AFL much in the manner Queensland did last year. It was a circumstance of crisis management that made it so, but for the rusted-on true believers in the Australian game in Sydney, it was a weekend to cherish. It has been a challenging time for Travis Auld, Marcus King and the AFL fixture team. They haven’t quite pulled the all-nighters from last year and they haven’t thrown the fixture in the rubbish bin and started from scratch as they did in 2020, but there has been less clarity from governments and moving teams around the country and finding them accommodation has been harder this time around. In 2020, there were shuttered resorts across Australia only too willing to open their doors to AFL clubs and their large travelling parties. They’re much harder to source 12 months on. Still, the show must go on and the AFL, clubs and other key stakeholders have again demonstrated their willingness to work together to keep the season afloat. Things don’t seem to be as dire as last year – yet – but footy is being played and the games are good. Locked-down Victorians and fans across the nation are thankful for that.
