DEMONS ARE THE REAL DEAL

Through the power of football we’ve been able to unite people FORMER ESSENDON STAR MICHAEL LONG AFTER LAST WEEK’S LONG WALK IN PERTH

ON FIRE: Led by midfield stars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver (inset), the Demons look the team to beat for the flag.

EDITOR’S LETTER

ntroducing your new 2021 premiership favourite, the Melbourne Football Club. If there was any doubt the Demons were the team to beat as we reach the halfway point of the season, it was put to bed last Friday night at Giants Stadium in the second half of the much-anticipated clash against Brisbane. The Lions played an almost flawless opening half. They led by 20 points at the main break, having had 43 more disposals, and led the clearance count by eight, contested possessions by 11 and had generated 14 more inside 50s. Had a couple of shots from Eric Hipwood not clattered into the post, Brisbane would have had a near impregnable hold on the game. But Melbourne did what great teams do. There was no panic, nor any wholesale positional changes. Just a collective resolve to work harder and bring more speed to the game. Within minutes of the restart, it was clear the Demons had lifted, and they kicked nine of the last 12 goals to win by 22 points. Clayton Oliver and Christian Petracca were magnificent at the coalface and Melbourne ended up winning the clearances by two,

It’s as good as we’ve played COACH SIMON GOODWIN AFTER THE DEES DISMANTLED THE LIONS

u We are officially just past the halfway mark of the 2021 home and away season and while it hasn’t been smooth sailing in terms of fixturing and planning, at least the on-field action has been first class. There is a new order at the top with Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs emerging from the middle of the 2020 pack to stake genuine premiership claims, while the Brisbane Lions

contested possessions by five and had five more inside 50s for the game. “It’s as good as we’ve played,” coach Simon Goodwin said afterwards. “Our ability to respond and get the game back looking like a Melbourne game and winning in that way – I’m just incredibly proud of them.” The Demons (11-1) are now two games clear of third place. A top-two finish, with all the advantages that brings, now beckons and Goodwin has 10 games remaining to deal with his pleasant selection headaches such as finding room for Jack Viney and Ben Brown in his all-conquering side.

have lost no admirers in the past two seasons and are on track for another top-four finish. The big watch is Richmond and where the Tigers will be when the whips are cracking later in the season. They’ve had on and off-field interruptions, but last Saturday’s win over an improved Essendon in the Dreamtime Game in Perth sent a strong message to other premiership contenders.

The biggest threat to the Demons? Several teams have claims, but Richmond served a timely reminder of its powers with a withering seven-goal burst to close out the Dreamtime Game against Essendon at Optus Stadium. The Tigers surrendered the lead 10 minutes into the final term, but then totally dominated, with the Bombers barely able to get their hands on the ball.

Several sides are waiting for their star talent to return and that certainly applies to Geelong which has played the majority of 2021 without Patrick Dangerfield. If he, together with Mitch Duncan, Cameron Guthrie and Mark Blicavs, are back for Thursday’s crunch game with Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval, then it’s a totally different Cats outfit.

The Power have been solid as always at home, but like West Coast, must start getting some results on the road. The biggest unknown for the remainder of 2021 will be the fixture. Lockdowns and border closures have come into play again in recent weeks and Victorian clubs will be praying the state’s latest lockdown will be over by this weekend. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  5

ONE WEEK at a TIME The other notable performance last weekend from a top-eight perspective was West Coast’s 22-point win over Carlton at the SCG. The Eagles went to a ground they had not won at for 22 years (admittedly a neutral venue this time) with nine of their best 22 players missing and won handily. Adam Simpson’s men have struggled on the road this year, beating only lowly Hawthorn, but this was a win to savour. “We’ve been a little bit inconsistent this year, but tonight we were down on numbers – like every club – but we were missing a few pretty good players. The young kids stood up, but our leaders were exceptional,” he said. Simpson might get his best gauge yet as to where the Eagles sit in the 2021 pecking order after Sunday night’s hastily rescheduled home game against Richmond at Optus Stadium. The game was supposed to be played the following Thursday night to kickstart round 14, but with the fixture a movable feast due to Victoria’s ongoing COVID lockdown, the Tigers jumped at the chance to return to their temporary Sydney base after the Dreamtime Game, then fly back to Perth to face the Eagles

and eventually return to Melbourne for their bye week, hopefully with more movement allowed. Collingwood’s gritty five-point win over Adelaide came after a two-day quarantine at a Melbourne hotel, which included breakfast at 6am on game-day before a 7.30am trip to the airport for their flight to Adelaide and three hours of sitting around in

the indoor nets area at Adelaide Oval before starting its final preparations for the game. Geelong is facing a similar schedule ahead of its clash with Port Adelaide on Thursday night, with no clear indication yet how far into the season it will be before matches are staged in Victoria once more.

NAB AFL Rising Star NIK COX ESSENDON

G

iven that lanky Essendon outside midfielder Nik Cox is the favourite to win the 2021 NAB AFL Rising Star Award, it stood to reason that at some stage soon, he would earn the weekly nomination. Twelve weeks into the season it finally came, and not before time according to Essendon supporters, who have been clamouring for his nomination for most of the season. Cox had 23 disposals, took eight marks, laid two tackles and kicked a goal to be one of Essendon’s best in the 39-point loss to Richmond in last Saturday night’s Dreamtime Game. It was his most prolific performance of the year and underlined what an exciting prospect he is for the Bombers as their regeneration continues at pace under new coach Ben Rutten. The 200cm Cox, who weighs only 87kg, boasts a huge tank and has exquisite skills on both sides of his body. Originally from Montmorency and the Northern Knights, he was the eighth selection at the 2020 NAB AFL Draft. ASHLEY BROWNE

HIGH HOPES: The Roos will be hoping Jacob Edwards can emulate the efforts of Marlion Pickett (inset), the success story of the 2019 Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

T

he second Mid-Season Rookie Draft was held last week, with 22 players getting the chance to live their AFL dream. With the first pick in the draft, North Melbourne selected Sandringham Dragons ruckman Jacob Edwards. He was projected to be a first-round selection in the 2021 NAB AFL Draft. The selection of a young project ruckman off the top set the tone for the rest of the draft. Seven ruckmen were taken overall, including four in the first seven picks. Gold Coast selected highly-touted young ruckman Ned Moyle out of the Oakleigh Chargers, while Carlton signed 210cm ex-volleyballer Alex Mirkov. Hawthorn bucked the trend at pick two, taking midfielder Jai Newcombe out of its own VFL program. Similarly, Collingwood selected Sturt forward Ash Johnson at three, while Adelaide picked up Murray Bushrangers defender Patrick Parnell. Most clubs made their selections looking to the long-term, rather than using the draft to fill holes. Richmond was one of the few teams which took a punt on a readymade prospect. The Tigers got their hands on former St Kilda forward Matthew Parker at pick 10. Many former AFL players who nominated were not as lucky, with Parker the only ex-League player to be selected. Tyson Stengle, Nathan Freeman, Wylie Buzza and Riley Knight, who were all linked to AFL clubs, were left undrafted. The impact of COVID-19 meant there wasn’t a Mid-Season Rookie Draft in 2020 despite the success of the inaugural draft in 2019. The standout success story from 2019 was Richmond’s Marlion Pickett, who made his debut in the 2020 AFL Grand Final and has been a regular part of the Tigers’ best side since.

Despite logistical challenges thrown up by COVID-19, there is no stopping Neale Daniher and his dedicated FightMND team ahead of Big Freeze 7. ASHLEY BROWNE he Danihers have long had a saying, one they share with each other in times of distress or when one member of this large and close-knit family needs a pat on the back or some words of encouragement: “Play on.” It is a term unashamedly borrowed from football, the game they have made an incredible contribution to at AFL level across two generations and for longer than that in the Riverina and southern New South Wales surrounds where the family first made its name. “You only look forward. You don’t look back,” Anthony Daniher said. ‘Play On’ has been adopted as the motto for the 2021 FightMND campaign, for which Anthony’s older brother Neale Daniher remains the figurehead, seven

8  AFL RECORD

years after he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, also known as ‘The Beast’. This year, it is plastered across the front of every one of the iconic bright blue beanies sold across Australia and which are featured so prominently in the broadcast of the annual Queen’s Birthday clash between Melbourne and Collingwood and the Big Freeze event that precedes it. he Daniher family has been part of the AFL/VFL scene since 1976 when promising key forward Terry Daniher joined South Melbourne, the club to which he was zoned. Two years later, in one of the most one-sided deals of all time, the Swans

SEN.com.au

7/6/21 4:30 pm

traded him to Essendon in exchange for centreman Neville Fields. The equivalent today would be the Bulldogs trading Aaron Naughton for Hawthorn’s Liam Shiels. The Danihers became one of the great families of football and especially Essendon. Terry played 294 games for the Bombers, Anthony 118 (after 115 for the Swans), Chris 124 and Neale 82. There was that famous day at Moorabbin in 1990 when history was made with the four brothers lining up together. The next generation have been represented by Joe Daniher (108 games for Essendon and now 12 for Brisbane) and Darcy (six for the Bombers). Terry, a two-time premiership captain, six-time All-Australian, Essendon Team of the Century member and Australian Football Hall of Fame inductee, is clearly the most decorated member of the family. But Neale, whose career was cruelled by successive knee injuries, might have been the best Daniher of all. Watching him kick the final two goals to snatch a one-point win for the Bombers against Carlton at Princes Park in 1981 never gets old. Once his knees failed him for good, the highly-intelligent Daniher (he studied theology at Melbourne University, which led to some deep philosophical discussions with Joseph Gutnick, an ordained rabbi who was club president when they were at Melbourne together) turned his mind to coaching and he was clearly made for that vocation. As Kevin Sheedy’s assistant, he broke down Carlton’s centre bounce structures to help the ‘Baby Bombers’ win the 1993 Grand Final. He was by Gerard Neesham’s side when Fremantle joined the AFL in 1995. And from 1998 to midway through 2007, he was the senior coach at Melbourne, in charge for 223 games, leading the club to the finals on five occasions, including the 2000 Grand Final. He remains the club’s greatest coach since Norm Smith, although Simon Goodwin might have something to say about that come the end of September. Such was his ability to spin a yarn and ‘sell’ the club, he became known as ‘The Reverend’.

“He’s always had a gift,” Anthony Daniher said. “A lot of that comes from Jim (their father). “His ability to read people, communicate with people and articulate with all levels of people … he has a real skill. “In the footy space he lived, he needed all those skills to survive at Melbourne as coach. “He was the club. There was nothing else. They were all falling down around him. “He refined those skills further and when this challenge came along, he was ripe and ready. “We knew that he had the capacity and the capability of doing something special and it’s through MND that he’s found that vehicle to make it happen.”

BAND OF BROTHERS: (from left) Chris, Terry, Neale and Anthony Daniher in 1990 when they all lined up for Essendon; (right) Neale modelling a now-iconic blue beanie and (below) before leading Demons fans on the walk to the MCG in 2016.

eale Daniher was first diagnosed with MND in 2013. The average life span thereafter is 27 months. Not a lot was known about it outside the family and friends of those who had it. Most significantly, nobody had ever taken the fight to the disease. But as a high-profile Australian and leading AFL personality, Daniher was well-placed to lead the way. And he chose to do so, taking his family, the football and sporting community and, eventually, much of the country with him. A home-spun idea to sell 5000 bright blue beanies spiralled out of control. The fledgling FightMND organisation ended selling 33,000 beanies that first year. Every acrylic supplier in Australia or nearby was tapped on the shoulder and asked for stock to meet the surging demand. A conversation around the kitchen table about the Ice Bucket Challenge that was going viral at the time led to the idea for the Big Freeze in the lead-up to the annual Melbourne-Collingwood Queen’s Birthday holiday game. Even when the Demons were struggling, this game always drew a healthy crowd at the MCG. Stars from the AFL and other sports and other leading figures have embraced the opportunity to have a laugh, slide into the icy water and hopefully help make a difference. The MCC, the AFL and Channel Seven jumped at the opportunity to become involved. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  9

SEVEN YEARS ON: Daniher with daughter and campaign director Rebecca; with Magpie Taylor Adams and Demon Jack Viney (below left); and with wife Jan and granddaughter Rosie (below right).

PHOTO: FIONA HAMILTON

Until COVID forced the cancellation of last year’s game and its relocation to the SCG this year, the sight of a sea of blue beanies across the MCG, swamping both the red and navy of the Demons and the famous black and white of the Magpies, has been the inspiration for the Daniher family and the team at FightMND that there will one day be effective treatments for MND and perhaps even a cure. “It just makes it all worthwhile,” said Rebecca Daniher, Neale’s daughter and the campaign director for FightMND. “To have this support and seeing the funds that can be raised and the impact that it is having makes every part of this fight worthwhile.” She told the AFL Record of the journey her family has been through for the past seven years.

The Big Freeze campaign each year helps me get up in the morning NEALE DANIHER

They heard about the courage and skill Neale displayed while playing for Essendon and then lived through the Melbourne years with the incredible highs and crushing lows that AFL coaching delivers. “All that gets diminished when you look at what he’s fighting through now,” she said. “Watching MND slowly take away Dad’s ability to do things and now his voice that is being taken away, that is really difficult to watch. “He has been able to put a light on what MND is. “I didn’t know what ‘The Beast’ was when he was diagnosed in 2013 and he has been able to shine a light, make an impact and bring some hope to people out there. “I couldn’t be prouder of what he has been able to achieve.” Daniher has taken his family on a journey. “With my original diagnosis in 2013, the odds were that I was not going to see two MCG slides,

Scan here to buy your beanies direct 10  AFL RECORD

let alone seven, so every step of the journey to now has been a bonus,” he said. “The Big Freeze campaign each year helps me get up in the morning and gives me purpose as part of my own fight. “It’s really important to me and my family and I’m so grateful to see so many blue beanies this time of year. “It indicates our ‘army’ is with us and won’t rest until we beat this beast of a disease.” The family feels blessed. The long chats to a man with so much humour and wisdom to share are becoming less frequent. “It’s becoming harder and harder for him to do, and it must be so frustrating. It’s a bit heart-wrenching for him to go through that,” Rebecca Daniher said. “There have been a lot more ups than downs and every moment we have with Dad is so precious. “We thought we’d have 27 months with him and here we are seven years on, so we are so lucky in that regard.” So too are his fellow people living with MND, their family and friends. Since 2014, more than $48m has been invested in MND research and the goal for this year is to pass the $11.9m raised in 2020. “We are very serious in our aim to find treatments and ultimately a cure for MND, but at the same time we want our army of supporters to enjoy this journey with us,” Neale said ahead of this year’s slide which will still be held at the MCG before the game is played in Sydney. A setback? Not really – it’s just a case of play on.

Here are Neale Daniher’s 10 ‘chosen ones’ who will take the plunge into the big ice bath on Monday.

CRAIG BELLAMY

MELBOURNE STORM PREMIERSHIP COACH What does ‘Play On’ mean to you? u The ‘Play On’ message really resonates with me. We hear that call often in our games. It’s about continuing to move forward, seeking opportunities and looking to fulfil your goals. Don’t stand still. Don’t wait for others. Get on with the job.

RUSSEL HOWCROFT

ADVERTISING GURU/ 3AW BREAKFAST CO-HOST/ DEMONS TRAGIC Any words for the FightMND army? u A brilliant example of what my radio mate and colleague Ross Stevenson says: “We are all mates in Melbourne.”

BILLY BROWNLESS

FORMER GEELONG STAR/MEDIA PERSONALITY What does ‘Play On’ mean to you? u Well, when I played it didn’t mean much to me as I never used to play on, but of course it’s the great Neale Daniher’s catch-cry – I know we struggle at times out there with different things, but we always must play on!

SARAH JONES

FOX FOOTY HOST/COMMENTATOR How did you feel when you were asked to be a slider? u I felt incredibly honoured to be asked by Neale. I think any time this incredible family asks the footy community for something we should all be saying, “Absolutely – what do you need?”

AFL RECORD VISION AUSTRALIA RADIO

TALKING FOOTY: Volunteers Zoe Warwick (left) and Danae Gibson read the AFL Record on Vision Australia Radio each week.

Warwick said while she loves her footy and going to the game, she was always aware that it wasn’t accessible for everyone which is why she jumped at the opportunity to read the Record. However, she said it was Gibson who has a real passion for the game, knowing all the players, team statistics and history. “She’d know who kicked a legendary goal in 1962,” Warwick said.

hether watching at home or going to the game, we know the AFL Record is essential pre-game reading for footy fans. However, what about those who are unable to read – people who are blind or have low vision? Thanks to a partnership between the AFL Record and Vision Australia Radio, they are now included in this important part of footy culture with a reading of the Record airing throughout the network every Thursday night during the season. Vision Australia Radio is a radio reading service, with a network of 15 services broadcasting to an audience of more than 700,000 people each month, with the network’s main audience being people who are blind or have low vision. Most of the Vision Australia Radio content is produced and presented by a small army of more than 600 skilled and dedicated volunteers. The two volunteers – and diehard Fremantle Dockers fans –

who present the 30-minute reading of the Record are Zoe Warwick and Danae Gibson. Both have several decades of radio experience between them, plus an appreciation for the publication and its accessibility. “If there’s an iconic footy moment, like a player kicking their 400th goal or playing their 250th game, it’ll be in the Record along with a player profile. Our program allows listeners who are blind or have low vision to be included and share in the moment,” Warwick said. “We generally read between four and seven articles each week and include the ladder and fixtures each week, but we also describe the image and read the headlines on the cover which highlights that week’s magazine’s particular focus.” In between readings, Warwick and Gibson lean on their extensive footy knowledge to help keep the program upbeat, just like the magazine that inspires it.

ision Australia Radio community engagement coordinator Jason Gipps said the station is proud to play a part in sharing the Record with more footy-loving Australians. “The green light given by the Record’s publisher (SEN) to produce the show highlights their commitment to inclusivity and supporting our community,” he said. Gipps also thanked Warwick and Gibson for their dedication in putting the program together. “Put simply, we wouldn’t be on air across the Vision Australia Radio network without our dedicated volunteers, the time and energy they bring is staggering and our accessible radio platforms would not be possible without them.”

HOW YOU CAN HELP u From now until June 30,

Vision Australia Radio is celebrating its essential radio reading service and asking for community support. All donations of more than $2 before June 30 are tax deductible and will help keep an essential service for the blind and low-vision community on air. You can make a one-off tax-deductible donation of $2 or more by heading to varadio.org. You can also set up regular monthly donations to support Vision Australia Radio.

u You all know the rules by now. You must socially

distance, keep a mask handy (or wear it if you live in Victoria) and practise good hygiene. At Adelaide Oval last Saturday, it was the latter as this community-minded security guard showed by dispensing hand sanitiser to the crowd before the Adelaide-Collingwood clash. Mind you, SA Chief Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier had put everyone on notice leading into the game, warning fans not to go anywhere near the footy if it was kicked into the crowd. “If you are at Adelaide Oval and the ball comes towards you, my advice to you

is to duck and do not touch that ball.” To be fair, Professor Spurrier did say later her comments were “tongue in cheek” or as the late great Jack Dyer would have said: “Cheek in tongue.” PHOTO: SARAH REED/AFL PHOTOS @SARAHREED

it was for a trip interstate amid COVID concerns at home and off the back of three successive defeats. Presidency talk and board battles aside, much of the chat surrounding the Magpies in the week leading up to the round 12 meeting with Adelaide was their inability to score. The Pies had kicked just 19 goals in three matches as their attack and Nathan Buckley’s game style were again called into question, so they needed something positive. That came in the form of Jamie Elliott, who was back in the line-up having been sidelined since round two with a fractured leg. Elliott was the match-winner, powering home four first-quarter goals on his way to a career-high six-goal haul as Collingwood edged out the Crows by five points. The small forward had kicked five goals on five occasions, including against Adelaide in 2019, but went one better, including the final nail in the coffin on the run from 50m, which gave the Magpies the lead late in the final term. And Elliott’s performance was certainly not lost on coach Buckley. “To be able to have that sort of impact coming straight back is a credit to him, (and) it’s a credit to our medical and fitness staff,” Buckley said. “Even late in the game to kick the winning goal, it was a pretty impressive performance.” ANDREW SLEVISON

QUESTIONS?

ANSWER MAN In 2016, my team North Melbourne won its first nine games to be eight points clear at the top of the ladder, but won only three more games for the season, sneaking into the final eight on percentage and losing in the first week of the finals. Has any club ever won its first nine games, like Melbourne this season, and not played finals?

with COL HUTCHINSON

FLAG FAVOURITES: No team has missed the finals after winning its first nine games, as the Demons did this season.

PHILIP MENDES, KEW, VIC CH: In 1965, legendary coach Norm Smith guided Melbourne to wins in its first eight games. The Demons then lost three of their next four and, incredibly, the club committee announced Smith’s dismissal as coach. Supporters were angry and he was reinstated within days, but team morale had evaporated and

Melbourne won just one more game to finish in seventh place and miss the finals. Fitzroy began well in 1948, winning its first five games and nine of its first 11, before losing its last eight. Twenty-three years later,

Melbourne won eight of its first nine games, but only three for the rest of the year to miss the September action. After winning the previous season’s premiership, Essendon won 10 of its first 12 games in 1963, but three consecutive losses were enough for it to miss finals action.

u Carlton’s Stephen Silvagni, the full-back in the AFL Team of the Century, was also a handy goalkicker. Twice in the 1992 season he kicked bags of eight goals, against West Coast and Hawthorn. In round 16, 1993, at Princes Park, the Blues, without captain and star forward Stephen Kernahan, trailed Fitzroy, led by Paul Roos, Ross Lyon and Alastair Lynch, by 16 points at half-time. In the second half, Carlton piled on 20 goals to four – 11.6 in the third quarter and 9.5 in the last – to blow the Lions out of the water.

Silvagni was the focal point, taking 11 marks and kicking 10.6. His opportunities were created by a dominant midfield led by Craig Bradley and Greg Williams. On the same afternoon, 19-year-old Saverio Rocca kicked 10.3 for Collingwood, while the night before, Adelaide’s Tony Modra booted 13.4 against Richmond. The following week, the Football Record named Silvagni the ‘Jack Daniels Man of the Week’, describing it as a timely display from ‘SOS’, who would probably soon be returning, and starring, in the backline. INJURY CHECK

THUMBS UP AS DANGER EYES RETURN u Patrick Dangerfield is set to make his long-awaited return from an ankle injury either this week or next – and it can’t come soon enough for the Geelong superstar. Dangerfield, who has been out of action since round five with a syndesmosis injury, admits he is a “terrible” watcher of the game. “Watching is terrible, it’s nowhere near as good as playing. That’s pretty clear to me now,” he said recently. “I suppose I’ve been pretty lucky throughout my career (with injuries), so sometimes you just cop the rough end. It gives you a different appreciation for how we play ... we constantly remind ourselves how hard it is to play the game because it’s a lot easier from the stands.” The 2016 Brownlow medallist is on the verge of a comeback after dealing with the most serious injury of his decorated 271-game career. He could be one of several Cats to return for this week’s blockbuster against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Mitch Duncan (concussion), Mark Blicavs (calf), Cameron Guthrie (shoulder) and Mark O’Connor (hamstring) are all in the selection mix again.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u Since round three, star Bomber Darcy Parish (160) has averaged 123 and made more than $250K.

HONOURABLE MENTIONS

u Saints duo Jack Steele (137) and Brad Crouch (131) put up their highest Fantasy scores of the season, as did Rory Laird (131), who is averaging an impressive 106, the third best of all defenders. Marcus Bontempelli (125) has a run of eight tons in a row, but is still behind teammate Jack Macrae (114), who has posted 100-plus in every round. Finally, imagine what Jack Higgins (116) could have scored if he kicked straight? He finished with 1.6, so an extra 30 points went begging.

TOP ROUND 12 SCORERS He added the Yiooken Trophy in the Dreamtime Game to his Anzac Day Medal after collecting a club-record 44 disposals in Perth. With eight marks and five tackles also to his name, Parish’s performance was the best of his 105-game career. Judging by his recent output, Fantasy coaches will be enjoying his numbers for years to come.

HARRY EDWARDS WCE, DEF – 78 u After 29 and 27 in his previous games, this was epic. All thanks to nine marks. TRENT BIANCO COLL, DEF/MID – 77 u Most traded-in for round 12 didn’t disappoint. Had 16 disposals, four marks, four tackles and a goal.

BUY JOSH KELLY

GWS GIANTS

MID/FWD, $739,000 u It’s time to grab all the ‘must-have’ premiums we have missed and the running machine is at the top of the tree. Since moving back to the midfield, he has dominated. He has a BE of 96, so his price will continue to rise.

LACHIE WHITFIELD

GWS GIANTS

FWD/DEF, $756,000 u After his season was delayed by injury, the former No.1 pick has hit his straps. In his two games before the bye, he was back to his marking best, taking season highs of 10 and 11 in scores of 119 and 122.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

MID/FWD, $586,000

FWD/MID, $304,000

u A week after receiving forward status, he lined up on the half-backline which was a Fantasy godsend. ‘Pendles’ rewarded faithful owners with his first 100 in eight weeks.

u After a nice cameo to help avoid a donut in the first round of byes with 47, it’s time to say goodbye to the cash cow after increasing $134K this season. Has been reliable, missing just one game and providing a handy emergency.

CALEB POULTER

COLLINGWOOD

MID, $452,000 u When a rookie hits a price tag like the young Pie has, it can be tempting to offload early. Given his average of 93 in his past three games, it’s worth hanging on to him, especially given his BE of just 14. Finds space and takes marks – 12 and 10 in rounds 10 and 12.

JAMES HARMES

MELBOURNE

DEF/MID, $578,000

CHAD WARNER

SYDNEY SWANS

FWD/MID, $447,000 u Although he looked the perfect player to hold until his bye, it’s time to stop the cash bleeding. His 37 last week gives him a threegame average of 49, which isn’t good given he has a BE of 96 this week.

BAILEY SMITH

WESTERN BULLDOGS

MID, $577,000

u When you talk about ‘must-haves’, the attacking defender needs is high on the list. His form is amazing with 125 in his past five, which leaves him with a BE of just 80. Still a value pick despite increasing $168K in 2021.

u The Dees hard nut has been sensational in the midfield since returning from injury, with a low score of 80 in the first month. His role was still there in round 12 but had a season-low 62 , laying just three tackles and giving away three frees.

u This is more of a rocket, but it’s understandable if frustrated coaches get an itchy trade finger on his bye this week. Didn’t get the inside time expected, recording no CBAs, no marks and just one tackle for a season-low 44.

ROUND 11 – 1661 PTS

ROUND 11 – 1651 PTS

u With the West Coast v Richmond game being moved forward, it means there are eight teams now on a bye for round 14. Be smart with your trades so you still have 18 playing next week.

u Now that one bye round is out of the way, you should aim to bring in premiums who have had their bye with as many of your trades as possible. I’m targeting Giant Lachie Whitfield in my backline.

u Max Gawn is your No. 1 captain choice this week as his numbers against Collingwood are usually pretty good, but this time he’s up against Max Lynch rather than Brodie Grundy. Points galore.

Match Preview

u It hasn’t been easy for the entire country to get to the footy of late, but we have nevertheless been blessed with a series of games that are shaping as previews of what we might see in September. And this is another one. The premiership windows for Port and Geelong are wide open and Thursday night’s game at Adelaide Oval should be instructive. The Power need to beat the teams around them on the ladder and were disappointing at home last month against the Western Bulldogs. They’ve won two games since, but weren’t convincing in either and their fans will be keen to see whether a harder edge has developed over

40  AFL RECORD

the bye. Geelong’s massive spending spree over summer was made for games like this and the two that follow, against the Western Bulldogs and the Brisbane Lions. Mitch Duncan, Mark Blicavs and Cameron Guthrie should be back, as might Patrick Dangerfield and Mark O’Connor. They’re big inclusions for a game both clubs understand is important as the jockeying for places in the top four begins in earnest. Flags aren’t won in June, but every four points gained at this time of year are precious. The Cats are starting to click and might be more worthy of our trust. ASHLEY BROWNE

GEELONG CATS

Highest score: 24.19 (163), Grand Final, 2007, at the MCG. Lowest score: 5.12 (42), qualifying final, 2020, at Adelaide Oval. Away record: 8-9-1 Home record: 15-2 Greatest winning margin: 119 points, Grand Final, 2007, at the MCG. Longest winning sequence: 10, Grand Final, 2007, to second semi-final, 2013. Most goals in a game: 6, Steve Johnson, round 4, 2010, at Kardinia Park; Tom Hawkins, round 12, 2020, at Metricon Stadium.

Prediction: Geelong by five points

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne

Feathers fly in Magpie stoush An off-field battle is looming at Collingwood as a rival ticket attempts to overthrow the current board.

BATTLE LINES DRAWN: Despite the Magpies’ motto of ‘Side By Side’, a bitter power struggle is being waged for control of the club.

T

he gloves aren’t yet off at Collingwood, but the combatants are circling each other and marking their territory. In one corner there is incumbent president Mark Korda and his board. In the other is wannabe president Jeff Browne. At stake is the future – short term and longer – of the Magpies. Korda, after initially sharing the role with fellow board member Peter Murphy, is now charting the course ahead for the club after the abrupt end to Eddie McGuire’s 22-year run as president earlier this year. Whether or not the battle between Korda and Browne gets to an election remains to be seen. Long-time Collingwood member David Hatley has collected enough signatures to force an Extraordinary General Meeting, and if he serves notice on the club, then it is off to the polls they go. It won’t be a new phenomenon at Collingwood. For some reason, some of the biggest internal stoushes in the game have been about who gets to take control of one of the largest and most iconic sporting clubs in the country. Several history books written about the Magpies have focused on many rifts, tiffs and slights that have happened at the club for more than a

94  AFL RECORD

It will be another complication in the season from hell for the Pies

century. But there are three regarded as the most prominent. In 1939, a spat between legendary coach Jock McHale and reserves coach Hughie Thomas over club finances ended up at committee level and an unsuccessful attempt to roll then president Harry Curtis. In 1963, it was agreed that a committee vote would decide the replacement for outgoing president Syd Coventry, but when that went the way of Jack Galbally, voices around the club got in the ear of Tom Sherrin – from the famous football manufacturing family – to challenge the result through a general election, which he won. It created fractures that some argue continue at Collingwood to this day. In 1982, the mid-year sacking of Tom Hafey as coach sparked a move by The Age proprietor Ranald Macdonald against president John Hickey and his committee. Once again it was huge news and it dominated the papers for weeks. Macdonald’s ‘New Magpies’ swept to power, but within three years the club was in even worse shape. About all that went right in that time was appointing Leigh Matthews as coach. This Collingwood battle could become just as divisive. There are powerful entities on both sides. Korda is one of Australia’s leading business restructure experts, deeply connected up and down Collins St. His board brings together a broad coalition of backgrounds and skills as diverse as any seen at Collingwood. Browne was the AFL’s external lawyer for 20 years and the former boss of Channel Nine.

His knowledge of football and media is as good as anyone in the industry. He knows where the skeletons are buried. We wait with interest to see who will join his ticket if it gets to an election. There have been murmurings about Peter Moore and Craig Kelly. Dual Brownlow medallist Moore is Collingwood royalty, but brings baggage as the father of current player Darcy. But that is nothing compared with Kelly, who in addition to being Magpie Will Kelly’s father, is the manager of senior coach Nathan Buckley, whose future is perhaps the biggest issue facing the club. He also manages potential replacement coaches if Buckley is removed, while his business empire is deeply entwined with the AFL. How Kelly could be part of the Collingwood board beggars belief. But this is AFL football, where conflicts of interest are as common as strained hamstrings. Other clubs have had their boardroom battles. Carlton has had some beauties, while over the past 20 years, Melbourne, Hawthorn, St Kilda and Richmond have also had to deal with potential board challenges. But in each case, they managed to smooth the ructions just before going to a vote. But things look different at Collingwood. Both camps are digging in their heels. It will be another complication in what has been the season from hell for the Pies. But like most things when it comes to Collingwood, where even for us neutrals it will be hard to look away.
