ooty’s operating mantra throughout 2020 was to be ‘flexible and agile’ and it has taken just three weeks for the AFL to borrow from that phrase sheet once more. The COVID outbreak in Brisbane late last week created some unique scenes at GMHBA Stadium last Friday night. Lions fans, who had travelled from Queensland for the game, as well as media members including Channel Seven duo Luke Hodge and Wayne Carey, had to leave the ground at quarter-time and isolate at the behest of the Victorian Government and the AFL. As numbers worryingly escalated in the Queensland capital last weekend, the AFL then moved swiftly last Monday morning to move Thursday night’s Brisbane-Collingwood game from the Gabba to Marvel Stadium. The return game in round 22 will instead be played at the Gabba. The move is a blow to the Lions who not only badly need a win after their 0-2 start, but also hoped to bank a healthy cheque on the back of hordes of Collingwood fans heading north
It created some unique scenes at GMHBA Stadium
u It took just two games into the second round of the season for the inevitable umpiring controversy to rear its ugly head. Geelong’s Mark Blicavs should have been penalised for holding the ball in the frantic last few seconds of last Friday’s thrilling contest against the Brisbane Lions at GMHBA Stadium. Not even the most one-eyed Cats supporter would argue
to attend the game at the start of their Easter break. But in the scheme of things, when compared with the mass relocation and dislocation last year, it is barely a mild inconvenience. And a few Melbourne retailers were pleased to accommodate the Lions players, who remained in Victoria for the week and stocked up on some essential items after only packing for two nights away. Collingwood-Brisbane is one of just several tasty match-ups over the Easter weekend.
their side dodged a bullet and should be sitting at a precarious 0-2 after two weeks of the 2021 season. But there are a couple of points worth highlighting here. First, the AFL immediately jumped on the front foot and admitted via new umpires boss Dan Richardson that Brisbane’s Zac Bailey, who laid an outstanding tackle, should have been given a free kick.
Saturday afternoon at the MCG sees the biggest test yet for the resurgent Sydney as it meets Richmond. Lance Franklin kicked three goals in his return last week, but it is the Swans’ younger brigade that brings the excitement. How good are they? We’ll know more come 4.30pm Saturday. Port Adelaide has laid waste to two of the competition’s stragglers – North Melbourne and Essendon – but the big tests for the side many believe is the premiership favourite
“The umpire at the time called play-on and, upon review, we acknowledge that it was a missed free kick on this occasion,” Richardson said. “By attempting to evade, the player with the ball (Blicavs) had prior opportunity and as a result the call should’ve been holding the ball. “As Chris (Fagan) has alluded to, it doesn’t determine the outcome of a game,
one decision. There’s many moments that impact the outcome of any game.” And that last comment, via a wise old head such as the Lions coach, is a valid one. There were many mistakes, particularly from the Lions in front of goal, in that game. As should be the case in the post-match review, players – and umpires – will hopefully learn from them. have now arrived, starting with West Coast at Optus Stadium on Saturday night and Richmond at home the following week. The Eagles were pretty good for most of what was a fantastic game against the Western Bulldogs, but faded late to lose by seven points. At home they are so much more formidable, although they are
clearly missing dynamic pair Luke Shuey and Elliot Yeo. Connor Rozee should return to further bolster the impressive Power outfit. If the Swans have been the surprise packet of the season, then Melbourne might not be far behind. The Demons appeared to be in big trouble on the eve of the
season when first-choice key forwards Ben Brown and Sam Weideman were injured, but they have adapted superbly with Tom McDonald temporarily shelving his midfield aspirations and Kysaiah Pickett bringing back memories of Aaron Davey in his prime with his highlights reel close to goal. The unbeaten Demons travel to Canberra to take on the GWS Giants, who desperately need to turn things around. They were disappointing for much of last week’s clash with Fremantle and, taking the end of last season into account, they have lost their past five games. It is hard to believe that just 18 months and 21 games ago, the Giants were playing in the Grand Final. And we haven’t got to the now traditional closing act of Easter football, Geelong and Hawthorn on Easter Monday. When they play at the MCG (last year the Cats won easily behind closed doors at GMHBA Stadium), it is invariably close. Geelong should win again, but the emerging young Hawks have their fans already anticipating another successful era.

NAB AFL Rising Star BRAEDEN CAMPBELL SYDNEY SWANS
I
t took Sydney list manager Kinnear Beatson all of about eight seconds at last year’s NAB AFL Draft to match the bid placed by Hawthorn with the fifth selection overall for Braeden Campbell. A line-breaking midfielder, Campbell hails from Pennant Hills, the same suburban Sydney club that produced Swans champions Jarrad McVeigh and Kieren Jack, as well as former St Kilda great Lenny Hayes. Together with round one Rising Star nominee Errol Gulden and Logan McDonald, Campbell made his debut in round one. But in last week’s win over Adelaide, Campbell starred with 25 touches, six marks and a game-high 708m gained to claim the round two nomination. The 19-year-old Swans Academy graduate has benefited enormously from the tutelage of Swans defender Dane Rampe, and also demonstrated considerable maturity by moving out of home to share digs in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, closer to the club’s SCG headquarters, with teammates James Rowbottom and Nick Blakey. t is not like there has never been any playing and even coaching and administrative traffic between Hawthorn and Geelong before. Austin McCrabb, Aaron Lord (who later crossed back again) and Jonathan Simpkin are among the former Cats to play for the Hawks. The volume going the other way is even greater, with Kelvin Matthews, Tim Hargreaves, Tim Allen and David Loats among those former Hawks who became Cats. Rod Olsson and Gary Ayres are former Hawthorn players who later coached Geelong. But since the rivalry between the clubs went into overdrive following the 2008 Grand Final and the ‘Kennett’s Curse’ comments that followed, there had been no player movement from Hawthorn to Geelong until last year’s free agency period when three-time Hawk premiership wingman Isaac Smith made the move to the Cats after 210 games in 10 seasons. As a Hawk, he was in the thick of what is arguably the best footy rivalry in modern times, including the epic drought-breaking preliminary final win by Hawthorn in 2013 and the 2016 qualifying final where he missed a set shot after the final siren that handed victory to the Cats. Such is the rivalry between the clubs that they have had Easter Monday to themselves since 2012 but Smith, 32, will experience it through a different lens for the first time. And his teammates – past and present – are looking forward to it. “He’s a bit lippy out there,” Hawthorn skipper Ben McEvoy said.

“If I can catch him, I’d like to nail him, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. It’s a big rivalry already, so hopefully he’s playing. “It’s always competitive against them and when you’re playing against a mate, it’s even more so.” Geelong skipper Joel Selwood helped court Smith when he
was choosing between offers to join either the Cats or Melbourne, as well as remaining at Hawthorn. “When I was talking to him about perhaps coming and playing in a Cats jumper, I could see him screwing his face up and thinking, ‘I’m not sure if I can do that’,” Selwood said. “It was his choice at the end of the day, but we know that free agency allows you to move clubs if you want to. “I look forward to what he’s going to do in a Cats jumper because he was very successful at Hawthorn.” Smith’s ties to the Hawks remain deep. Selwood joked that they didn’t see him all that much in the pre-season because a number of Hawthorn players had their weddings. “We think he’s just a part-timer at Geelong because he’s been away a lot,” he said. Luke Breust, James Frawley and Liam Shiels were all married over the summer. Smith was the master of ceremonies at Shiels’ wedding. “We’ll be reminding him of all the bad jokes he told,” Hawk star Tom Mitchell said last week on the hawthornfc.com.au Golden Years podcast.

ne of the great shames of the 2020 COVID-affected year was the usual suite of Easter fixtures being wiped out after the AFL paused the season for the entirety of April and May. The usual rituals which accompany the big Easter Monday fixture between Geelong and Hawthorn were absent, as was Marvel Stadium for the now ‘traditional’ Good Friday afternoon clash. To its credit, North Melbourne had done a power of work in the lead-up to Good Friday football with the game making its debut in 2017, as the Roos faced off against the Western Bulldogs in front of 42,814 fans. And after two further years which has seen North play St Kilda in 2018 and Essendon in 2019, Good Friday footy is back in 2021 with the same match-up which started the now annual event making a return. Friday afternoon’s clash will be special for several reasons, with the Good Friday Appeal for the Royal Children’s Hospital

in Melbourne set to take centre stage again. On the field, North is struggling and in desperate need of an improved performance after last Saturday night’s drubbing at the hands of Gold Coast, while the Bulldogs battled back from a 14-point deficit to beat West Coast by seven points in arguably the game of the season. But the beauty of Good Friday football is it’s simply more than a game, with charity at the forefront. North will be hoping to build the game in partnership with the Bulldogs as an annual fixture. The action on Good Friday doesn’t stop at Marvel Stadium, with the AFL opting to schedule a second fixture this year as the Crows host Gold Coast at Adelaide Oval in what promises to be another intriguing game between two developing teams. While things may not be back to normal just yet – as Brisbane’s snap lockdown this week showed – the return of Easter football across the long weekend is something to be celebrated.
The return of Easter football is something to be celebrated
u It’s the pointy end of the AFLW season this weekend and already the Adelaide Crows and the Brisbane Lions are in the box seat under a new-look finals system. The Crows and Lions both won their final home and away round games last week to secure the top two spots and set up home preliminary finals in a fortnight. That leaves fourth-placed Melbourne to take on fifth-placed Fremantle in a home qualifying final at Casey Fields on Saturday. Similarly, after finishing third on the ladder, Collingwood will host sixth-placed North Melbourne in the other qualifying final at Victoria Park on Saturday. For the first time in the competition’s five-year history, 14 teams participated in a nine-round home and away season. Week two of the finals series will see the winner of the Melbourne-Fremantle game play the Crows in the first preliminary final, while the winner of the Collingwood-North Melbourne clash will face the Lions in the second preliminary final. The one major concern on the eve of the finals was a knee injury to Demons star Daisy Pearce. The AFL has announced ticket prices will remain at $10 for the first two weeks of the finals.

A STATE OF

Foo
or Brisbane Lions chief executive Greg Swann, it might have been when he picked up the paper last week to read a long and detailed account of Patrick Dangerfield’s report and subsequent three-match suspension and then double-check that he was reading the local Courier-Mail and not the daily bible of all things footy, Melbourne’s Herald Sun. For his Gold Coast counterpart Mark Evans, it was listening to a local barber wax lyrical about the AFL player who had come through his store last year. Some amateur sleuthing determined it was West Coast champion Nic Naitanui. The AFL circus might have left town late last October after a long and exhaustive run in southeast Queensland, but early indications are that it left a major – and lasting – impression while it was there. The Palaszczuk Government agreed to house the AFL and most of its clubs for most of 2020 while the coronavirus wreaked havoc on much of the country – especially Victoria – in a 10-minute phone call with AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan in early July. Two months later, the state was handed temporary custody of the Grand Final. McLachlan promised Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk that the AFL would spend some money and he was right. It was estimated that the code made a $136.4m economic contribution to the state, primarily in Brisbane ($71.7m) and the Gold Coast ($47.3m). The game was responsible for supporting the equivalent of 1182 full-time jobs.
Football in Queensland was the unlikely beneficiary of a global pandemic in 2020 – and the building blocks are in place to ensure the game thrives up north. ASHLEY BROWNE
FLAGBEARERS: The relocation of the AFL to Queensland for much of the pandemic-affected 2020 season provided the shot in the arm the game needed in the state.
Figures released by the AFL indicate the League spent more than $60m, which included 101,000 bed nights, 400,000 meals, 10,000 rental cars, 950 bus trips and 120 charter flights, as well as widespread rental of local sporting facilities. Early indications are that the AFL will get a reasonable return on its investment. The Lions are on track for a membership figure of around 35,000, which will be considerably more than any other time in their history. The Suns had a record 16,236 members last year despite the pandemic and expect to go better this year. Even more significant were the TV figures. The Lions might have lost by five goals to Sydney in the season-opener, but people were watching, with ratings 55 per cent higher than the corresponding figure in 2019. Across the opening weekend of the season, TV ratings for the four

free-to-air games in Brisbane were up by 15 per cent. Signs of growth are everywhere. The Lions have a full suite of sponsors. “We had multiple companies chasing us for certain properties and we didn’t have to take the first offer,” Swann said. “Last year, we had 25 corporate boxholders, now we have 65.” Both Queensland clubs have been the beneficiaries of the AFL moving holus-bolus into the state last year and capturing a database of companies who became captivated by the game. “They weren’t necessarily into the Lions,” Swann said. “They came to experience a preliminary final or a Grand Final, they really enjoyed it and now they want to get involved.” On the Gold Coast, game participation has been surging for several years, even though the Suns have struggled for on-field success.

AFL RECORD A STATE OF FOOTY SUNSHINE
Much of the 53 per cent increase in game participation in Queensland since 2014 has been fuelled by the interest on the Gold Coast. But with 42 games staged at Metricon Stadium last season, AFL became a way of life on the holiday strip. “You can see the level of interest that was cultivated last year is again starting to show some good numbers,” Evans said. “That will flow through into memberships and corporate sales as long as the football product and fixturing work to our favour and we can get a good run at it. “You can hear and feel people are talking about the AFL more than ever. They know the young players on the Suns list. They are talking about how the other teams were based here.” Matt Rowell, Ben King, Izak Rankine and Jack Lukosius are household figures from Southport to the Tweed River. “But more and more they’re starting to understand the others,” Evans said. “Connor Budarick has become a local hero and the AFLW team has been fantastic because they bring another group of people to the sport, and once they’re here, they follow the men’s and women’s teams.” One of the legacies of the AFL’s Queensland relocation last year was a greater spend on
12 AFL RECORD
THRIVING: The Lions’ resurgence, the Grand Final at the Gabba and the advent of the Suns’ AFLW team all played significant roles in boosting the interest in football in Queensland.
infrastructure. Much like the rest of the country, there is a squeeze for grounds and facilities, but an $8m infrastructure fund – contributed to equally by the Queensland Government and the AFL – will start to address that, especially when it comes to women’s football, which is at the forefront of the surging interest in the game. Evans claims there are greenfield locations everywhere that could do with some changerooms and lights. The future nevertheless contains challenges. Brisbane’s COVID outbreak last week has meant the Lions did not return home after their loss to Geelong and have spent a dislocated week in Melbourne preparing for Thursday night’s clash with Collingwood, which
was moved from the Gabba to Marvel Stadium. At 0-2, they simply must win. In the medium term, there is the prospect of a second NRL team coming to Brisbane, perhaps as soon as 2023. It is staggering, although not altogether surprising, that it has taken this long, but Swann believes the Lions are in excellent shape to deal with this perceived threat. “There’s always competition,” he said. “But now that we are in the schools, which should translate into more people playing the game at senior level and watching the games, the fundamentals are solid. “We’ve now got good corporate support and good rank and file support.” The long term opportunity is the likely prospect that the Olympic Games will be coming to Brisbane in 2032. Whether the main stadium will be built at Albion Park or at a redeveloped Gabba, the Lions are well placed to be an anchor tenant and to eventually have a home stadium the equal of Optus Stadium, Adelaide Oval and the MCG. “The Games will be good for us whatever way it goes,” Swann said. But what has become clear is that the unintended consequence of the global pandemic is the shot in the arm it gave the AFL in Queensland. “When you’re out in the community and people are talking to you about the AFL without you raising the topic, you know the impact it has created,” Evans said. @hashbrowne

individual performances across the AFL in round two. Ollie Wines and Zak Butters were colossal in Port Adelaide’s win over Essendon, Clayton Oliver turned it on for Melbourne against St Kilda, while Taylor Walker backed up his five-goal round one haul with six majors as Adelaide went down to Sydney. The list doesn’t end there either, but one match-winning display which caught the attention of many was Western Bulldogs captain Marcus Bontempelli. The ‘Bont’ guided the Bulldogs to a memorable seven-point victory over West Coast in a contest that ebbed and flowed with several lead changes throughout at Marvel Stadium. Bontempelli is made for big moments and again delivered when it mattered, converting the goal which edged the Dogs ahead at the death and subsequently landed his side the four points. His actions invited praise from his coach Luke Beveridge. “He’s done it before, Marcus, he’s lifted us,” Beveridge said. “He’s probably the prime example of that midfield group. When there’s not much time left on the clock and the time is now, just what he did in the last quarter. “They lifted each other, but there’s no doubt he gave us significant momentum and really swung us and sparked us into action.” The classy midfielder finished with three goals, had 30 disposals, seven inside 50s, five clearances and provided two goal assists in a mighty display. and 2018 seasons – has seen him play only 125 of a possible 195 games since making his debut in round nine, 2012. The latest setback means he can add a broken leg to a long list of ailments which include back, hamstring and ankle injuries.

ANSWER MAN Before the season, Joel Selwood had played in 226 wins for Geelong. Where does that rank for the most wins in a career?
with GRAHAM PILKINGTON u John Roberts was a goalkicking hero in his first VFL match. A high-leaping forward, Roberts made his debut for Woodville in the SANFL in 1974. During the 1977 season, at the age of 20, he kicked 16 goals against Central District at Football Park. He made his VFL debut for South Melbourne in round one, 1980, against Geelong at Kardinia Park. The Cats led by 16 points at half-time, but the Swans clawed their way back and the two clubs went goal for goal in the last quarter. With Geelong in front by three points, Roberts took a strong mark as the final siren sounded.
WINNING WAYS: Cats skipper Joel Selwood sits seventh on the list of career wins, behind Hawthorn champion Michael Tuck (inset).
LOU WHIMPEY, BALWYN, VIC GP: It ranks very highly as Selwood has a chance this season of moving into fourth place on the all-time list if he plays in 13 wins for the Cats. Hawthorn’s Shaun Burgoyne can take outright second place if he plays in four victories. Winning regularly is not an absolute guarantee of club success, but, with one exception, all the players listed below are multiple premiership winners. Leading the way, Michael Tuck won seven flags at Hawthorn, followed by Richmond’s Kevin Bartlett and Collingwood’s Gordon Coventry with five each. Brent Harvey, the record-holder for most games played, achieved this feat just once at North Melbourne. Selwood and Dustin Fletcher (Essendon) were used to success from the outset. Both played in premierships in their first season. Tuck tasted victory in his last game, which just happened to be a Grand Final. Oddly, four players finished with exactly 220 career victories. Hawthorn’s Leigh Matthews continued his winning ways by claiming the ninth-highest number of wins by a coach.

CAN YOU ASSIST? u The AFL is seeking information regarding the following former players – Les C. Smith (Collingwood 1952; 1954), Leo Smyth (Fitzroy 1954-58), Bobby G. Wilson (Fitzroy 1955), Jim Oakes (Hawthorn 1936), Mark Mitchell (Melbourne 1969), Bill Reddick (North Melbourne 1955-56), Dick Casey (South Melb 1905-12), Bill Hennington (South Melb 1914), Jim Schellnack (South Melb 1904) and Barry L. Smith (Footscray 1960-65).
If you can assist, please contact Col Hutchinson via email on Col.Hutchinson@afl.com.au.
Supporters ran on to the ground as his teammates, and a couple of police horses, helped to hold back the crowd. Roberts kicked the goal to give the Swans a memorable win. In 50 games from 1980-82, Roberts kicked 135 goals and was the Swans’ leading goalkicker twice. He returned to the SANFL and, in 1987, kicked 111 goals for North Adelaide. MARK GENGE

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK HONOURABLE MENTIONS
u Before last Sunday, Blake Hardwick (135) had scored just one Fantasy ton in his 84 games. He blitzed it against the Tigers, who generally give up plenty of points to defenders, with a whopping 52-point final quarter where he took seven of his 15 marks. Hardwick’s career Fantasy average is 63, but the new rules have seen plenty of defenders rack up bigger numbers due to more marks. We’re not sure if we’ll see Hardwick as a Fantasy Pig again, but he’ll be a good free agent pick in Fantasy Draft as he scored 91 in round one.
u Docker Andrew Brayshaw (127) was impressive in the final game of the round, keeping himself in the ‘100 in every game’ club. There are 11 players in that category for 2021, including Taylor Walker (120) whose six-goal haul helped him to be the top scorer at the SCG. Bulldogs trio Marcus Bontempelli (117), Josh Dunkley (117) and Jack Macrae (113) scored at will, while Fantasy Pig Tom Mitchell (111) looks to be a trade target ASAP.

When you look at defender roles, Hardwick has the lot. He is taking his share of kick-ins and marks which is being reflected in his scores of 91 and 135. Against the Tigers, he had an impressive 27 kicks and 15 marks to give him a break-even of 13.
The last thing Neale (and his Fantasy coaches) needed coming off a quiet first round was a hard tag against the Cats. He scored just 51, which has seen his price drop $106K since the start of the season and he has a whopping BE of 191.
After 33 possessions and seven tackles the week before, the Roo recruit looked out of sorts against the Suns with 14 and two for a score of 51 playing predominantly forward.

FWD, $620,000 Although the young gun attended only seven centre bounces, it didn’t reflect his scoring with an impressive 119. He is still available for a bargain price which is reflected by his BE of 62. He is owned by just 10 per cent of the competition and has the luxury of playing in a dominant team.
ERROL GULDEN
SYDNEY
MID, $333,000
MID, $719,000 Although attending 12 of the 21 centre bounces wasn’t awful, he still spent a lot of time forward and scored well short of his predicted midfield premium numbers. The positive is he remains on track to gain forward status in round six, which would keep him relevant.
JAKE LLOYD

DEF, $812,000
REILLY O’BRIEN RUC, $727,000
I’m all for holding premiums, but get off now before your season is a complete write off. He has dropped a total of $101K in just two weeks and still carries a BE of 171. It’s tough to find a ruck replacement at the moment, but given the fact he is averaging under 50, you would take anything.
JYE CALDWELL
ESSENDON
FWD/MID, $529,000
If you are one of the 47 per cent of the competition that didn’t start with Gulden, you have missed two great scores, but you haven’t missed the boat. He is averaging 101 and has a BE of -30. Get him in.
Has had a disappointing start to the season with an average of 81, which has resulted in a price drop of $61K. He will bounce back to be one of the best defenders, but is taking a hit due to the injection of the capable youngsters.
After a great start to the season with a triple-figure score on debut for his new club, the midfielder was on track for another impressive return until a hamstring injury that will keep him out for a number of weeks. Trade.

u There was an increase in total Fantasy points scored in round two, with 44 points a team more than round one. This is still 27 points shy of 2019 when we had 20-minute quarters.
u Are the rucks dead in Fantasy? Maybe not. Brodie Grundy (122) and Max Gawn (108) bounced back after a poor round one. Unfortunately, Reilly O’Brien (48) did not.
u If you’ve got a zero in your squad, consider the captaincy loophole where you can put a VC on a player early in the round. If you like their score, place the C on the non-scorer.

BRISBANE LIONS
Match Preview
u The Lions could surely do with some home cooking given their 0-2 start to the season and they’d be keenly aware that only five of the past 58 teams to start their season with that record have ultimately made the finals. But after their heartbreaking one-point loss to Geelong, they’ve cooled their jets in Victoria all week because of the COVID outbreak in Brisbane and now play the Magpies at Marvel Stadium. They had every right to grouse at the free kick not paid to Zac Bailey at the death that would have likely won the game for them against the Cats, but equally, they paid a hefty price for a slow start that ultimately had

GamePreview A.indd 36
them playing catch-up football for the remainder of the game. Still, they finished full of running and the Eric Hipwood-Joe Daniher combination is starting to show promise and will pose problems for the Magpies on Thursday night. Collingwood took care of a disappointing Carlton due to a midfield master class and the match-ups in that part of the ground in this game are mouth-watering. The Pies have been dealt a lucky break getting to stay home and it might be enough to get the win, although this Brisbane team is too talented to keep losing. ASHLEY BROWNE
Highest score: 22.17 (149), round 17, 2007, at the MCG. Lowest score: 6.6 (42), round 15, 2020, at the Gabba. Away record: 7-13. Home record: 13-15. Greatest winning margin: 93 points, round 17, 2007, at the MCG. Longest winning sequence: 6, round 13, 1997, to round 15, 2001. Most goals in a game: 7, Alastair Lynch, round 3, 2004, at the Gabba; Jonathan Brown, round 17, 2007, at the MCG.
Prediction: Collingwood by five points

ADELAIDE CROWS
Match Preview u Gold Coast’s 59-point thrashing of North
Melbourne last week was the commanding performance we should expect of a side which has drafted the cream of the best young players in the country and has dealt shrewdly at the trade table. The Suns had the edge in talent, and it showed. Among their prime movers over the opening fortnight of the season has been Jack Lukosius, the erstwhile defender who has been moved to the wing this year where his tank, superb foot skills and excellent hands have come to the fore. The native South Australian is primed to enjoy his
Easter weekend visit back to his home state. Gold Coast beat Adelaide for the first time last year at Metricon Stadium, snapping a 13-game losing streak, but there is more history to overcome this time around – the Suns have never won at Adelaide Oval. The Crows fell away after a bright start at the SCG and need a few more players to hit the scoreboard other than Taylor Walker, whose exceptional start to the season continued with six goals against the Swans. Adelaide played so well at home against Geelong to start the season and will want to repeat that pressure game here. ASHLEY BROWNE

What I’m thinking with Ashley Browne
Crazy night at the Cattery Geelong’s narrow win over Brisbane last week will go down as one of the most talked about matches in recent seasons.
L
ast Friday’s Geelong-Brisbane game might not have been the most pleasing on the eye, but as a piece of sporting theatre, it could be hard to beat for the rest of the season. Perhaps we’re easily pleased, given how few big games have been played in front of large, loud and passionate crowds, especially in Victoria, in the past 12 months. It pretty much had everything you could wish for as a neutral viewer – spite, controversy and about as much niggle as you could possibly hope for in these sanitised times. And for good measure, an unfolding COVID-19 scare in Brisbane saw a public announcement that any person at the stadium who travelled from the Queensland capital in the past few days must leave immediately – and that included former Lion and Channel Seven commentator Luke Hodge. It was one of those games – as it was unfolding and in the aftermath – that you felt a little bit sorry for those who aren’t captivated by footy as much as we are. As we all know now, the Lions did not receive a free kick and the likely match-winning shot on goal with 23 seconds to go when Zac Bailey’s textbook tackle on Mark Blicavs on the edge of the goalsquare was not rewarded. Add in an earlier 720-degree tackle on a Geelong player that also went
94 AFL RECORD
HEAT IS ON: With the most talented list in his 11 seasons as coach at his disposal, the pressure is on Chris Scott to deliver a second premiership; (inset) Lachie Neale and Gary Rohan after their first-quarter clash.

unrewarded and a blatant throw not paid against Joel Selwood and it is fair to claim that the rub of the green didn’t go Brisbane’s way. The Lions weren’t entirely blameless. A tardy start and some poor decisions and executions of their own helped contribute to the one-point defeat. Why did Callum Ah Chee kick to the forward pocket and not centre the ball with a free kick with seconds to go? He’ll have been asked that question a few times this week. Selwood. Isaac Smith. Eric Hipwood. The umpires. Depending on your allegiance, there were heroes and villains aplenty on a wild and woolly evening at GMHBA Stadium. But the star of the show was Cats coach Chris Scott, who eyeballed the Brisbane players at the quarter-time break in the aftermath of the Lachie Neale-Gary Rohan clash that will cost Rohan two weeks on the sidelines, and had a bit to say about it all post-match. Modern-day players are probably not all that invested in the history of the game, but it would be interesting to know how many of the current-day Lions were aware that Scott once walked in their shoes. For more than a decade, the 1994 Rising Star was one of the most feisty and belligerent Lions of all. He and twin brother Brad were known as the ‘Kray brothers’ and
intimidation, physical and mental, was a key part of their armoury. It was a bit of a throwback to see him prowling so menacingly in the vicinity of the Brisbane players. You have to wonder what Lions fans, who loved Scott and everything about him when he was a player, thought of it all. Alastair Clarkson aside, there is no more polarising coach in the game. He is fiercely protective of his players and his club. In his own subtle way, he pushes and prods the media post-game. “It’s not for me to say, but if you want to write it …” is his clever way of steering the football agenda in the direction he wants to steer it. His mouth-agape, arms-in-the-air reaction to free kicks have become meme-worthy and there are several great ones hovering around cyberspace. But he can coach. Geelong is among the smartest and best-run clubs in the AFL and has never come close to letting Scott test the market. But he is a man under pressure. Geelong’s list is the deepest and most talented in his 11 years at the club. That second premiership is so close he can touch it, which might explain why he was so on edge last week. The pieces are in place. But he has to win, which is why these eyes will be on him all season.
