elbourne has won its opening four games of the season for the first time since 1994 and, for its long-suffering supporters, maybe, just maybe, it is time to dream. The Demons played some good football in the opening three games of the season, but last Sunday’s 25-point win over Geelong at the MCG was their most impressive performance. Granted, the Cats had a few missing from their best side, but the Demons were relentless in the cold and wet conditions, and it started with a master class from emerging superstar Christian Petracca, who had 36 disposals, nine clearances and two goals. The Demons have had some issues striking a balance through the midfield, but they also got great contributions against the Cats from Clayton Oliver (34 disposals, six tackles) and Jack Viney (24 disposals, eight clearances). One of the issues for Melbourne heading into the season was supposed to be the injuries to both its key forwards, Sam Weideman and boom North Melbourne recruit Ben Brown. Given their absence, coach Simon Goodwin might have happily settled

u It might only be four rounds into the 2021 season but there is a genuine level of excitement about how the game is trending. The ‘stand’ rule has opened up the ground like we haven’t seen for a long time, so a tick to the AFL decision-makers on that score. With the ball seemingly zinging from end to end, the emphasis on running and

Importantly, you have to admire how quickly some of these kids have adapted. Like a lot of his contemporaries, young Bomber Nik Cox hardly played any footy in 2020, but there he was at 90kg shouldering the ruck responsibility when the game was on the line. ONE WEEK at a TIME heartbreak added for good measure, Melbourne supporters know better than to get ahead of themselves. But the Demons should get over lowly Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday, which would set up a monstrous Anzac Eve clash against Richmond that would also be the 300th game for Nathan Jones. The Western Bulldogs and Sydney round out the unbeaten teams and will enter their respective games this weekend against Gold Coast and GWS as warm favourites to remain so. South Australian fans are enjoying a fine start to the season with Port Adelaide and Adelaide having both dropped just one game. North Melbourne propping up the bottom of the ladder as the only winless team is not all that surprising. The Kangaroos are still bottoming out as they embark on a slow rebuild. But having Collingwood and Brisbane among the one-win teams through four games is surprising.

The Lions have been unlucky, with COVID precautions meaning they’ve spent three weeks on the road. They must beat Essendon at the Gabba on Saturday night to stay in touch with the ladder leaders. But Collingwood is struggling. The Pies still defend reasonably well, but the trading out of Adam Treloar, Tom Phillips and Jaidyn Stephenson has robbed them of spark and speed around the contest and now Taylor Adams will be missing for at least the next 10 weeks with a medial ligament injury. Collingwood also struggles to score and that might be the greatest frustration felt by its fans. Coach Nathan Buckley had all summer to fix a problem that stems back to last season, but nothing seems to have changed. The Pies have had some great wins against West Coast at Optus Stadium in recent times, so it would be foolish to entirely discount them from winning again. But another loss would leave them at 1-4 and at long odds to make the finals.

NAB AFL Rising Star LACHIE SHOLL ADELAIDE CROWS

great game on the outside last Sunday from Adelaide’s Lachie Sholl has earned him a rare football double – a second NAB AFL Rising Star nomination. His 24-possession, two-goal performance in the round 17 game against Carlton last season was acknowledged and selectors went there again this week after a powerful 31-possession, one-goal performance for the Crows in their 41-point win over North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium. The St Bernard’s product was a fourth-round selection by the Crows in 2018, but his superb kicking skills were a highlight from the day he walked into the club and he has been impossible to dislodge from the side. He played eight games last year and remains eligible for the award in 2021. Sholl was the first non-Sydney player to receive a nomination in 2021. Chad Warner, formerly of East Fremantle, made it three-from-three for the Swans after a brilliant display in round three against Richmond in which he gathered 20 disposals, took five marks and kicked two goals. n a rematch of the inaugural AFLW Grand Final, the Adelaide Crows will take on the Brisbane Lions again on Saturday afternoon at Adelaide Oval. The Crows will be looking to claim their third premiership from four tries, if you discount the cancelled 2020 season, and cement their legacy as the dominant team of the first era of AFLW. A lot has changed since 2017, but Adelaide still has 12 members of the Grand Final side that triumphed over the Lions. Brisbane has only seven players left from that 2017 line-up, with the majority of its side picked off by expansion teams. Ten members of the Lions’ inaugural AFLW side are still in the league and playing elsewhere. Being able to rebuild the list on the fly and make it back to

the Grand Final so quickly is a testament to Brisbane coach Craig Starcevich and his club’s list management. Adelaide made its way through, winning a final of sorts in round nine over Collingwood to earn top spot and control the home field throughout the finals. The Crows took full advantage of that against Melbourne in the preliminary final, winning comfortably and booking their Grand Final spot. The Lions also finished the year with wins over the Magpies and Roos to earn second spot and a much-needed bye in the first week of finals. That home ground advantage proved crucial against Collingwood in their preliminary final, outlasting the Magpies in the blistering Queensland heat.

The biggest storyline heading into this game is Adelaide captain Chelsea Randall, who will miss with concussion. Some have asked whether the AFL’s new 12-day concussion protocols would hold firm if it meant a star player missed a Grand Final – and at the first possible instance of testing them, they have. The Crows have struggled historically without Randall and will need to work things differently minus their courageous barometer. The game will have clean air following the AFL’s decision to move the Western Bulldogs-Gold Coast game to a twilight start to free up the Saturday afternoon slot. The Crows and the Lions have built what is arguably AFLW’s best rivalry and fans can expect a ferocious contest.

Fast-forward to 2021 and the new season is taking on a much more normal pattern. One key feature that fans have enjoyed is Thursday night football, with crowds and TV ratings producing some of the strongest figures in the first four rounds. There has been some great footy as well, with the round three after-the-siren Brisbane win over Collingwood followed by Sydney’s thrilling three-point victory over the Bombers at the SCG in round four. fewer matches clash, with only two games on Saturday night directly going up against each other, suiting broadcasters and ensuring more eyeballs are drawn to more matches. There were some raised eyebrows last week when the AFL confirmed its fixture for rounds seven and eight and Thursday was absent, with games in that slot only slated to return in round 13. THE EAGLES-MAGPIES RIVALRY CONTINUES …

For some reason, there is always an extra edge when the West Coast Eagles and Collingwood cross paths. They do so again on Friday night in Perth and it should be another thriller. ASHLEY BROWNE

here is no rhyme or reason why West Coast and Collingwood have developed one of the great rivalries in football. There was no all-in brawl in the final quarter of a Grand Final, the event historians believe is what happened in 1910 to spark the enmity between the Magpies and Carlton, which continues to this day. There is no classist element, which is what drove the Melbourne-Collingwood rivalry for so many years, what with the Demons the team of choice of the private school-educated middle class against the proudly working-class scrubs from the boot factories of Collingwood. And nor was a player defection at the heart of it, as was the case when the Richmond-Collingwood rivalry exploded in 1920 when champion Magpie Dan Minogue returned from war service and

stunned the club by seeking a clearance to the Tigers. In his first year as coach, he led Richmond to its maiden premiership win – over Collingwood. West Coast and Collingwood do share some history. Mick Malthouse is a premiership coach at both clubs, but moved back to Victoria almost with the blessing of the Eagles after 10 years of distinguished service that included two premierships. They were happy to see the back of each other. So in the absence of any bitterness, we are left with a rivalry that was sparked purely and solely because of events on the field and thanks to a series of great matches stretching as far back as 1990, the first year of the AFL and just the fourth season in West Coast’s history.

Indeed, Malthouse played a large part in the aftermath of the first notable game between the clubs, the 1990 qualifying final that ended in a draw –13.12 (90) apiece – at Waverley. Magpie supporters remember it for the freakish Peter Daicos goal from deep in the forward pocket late in the final quarter, while Eagles fans would lament a set shot from 15m out that Peter Sumich missed after the final siren. In a video published by West Coast in 2013, Sumich said his initial thought was to try a banana kick but said: “If I don’t hit it right, it could go anywhere and I’d miss.” He did the safe thing and kicked a drop punt, that ended up missing by half a metre to the left. Transport that kick through the time machine 30 years later and Sumich would clearly have kicked the ball around his body and in all likelihood scored. The fallout of this game was wide-ranging. Extra time was introduced for all finals (except the Grand Final) the following season and interstate

finals were also instituted for the first time. Malthouse was at his feisty best afterwards, telling team officials to keep the media out. “Be warned! No one is to go near my players. As far as I’m concerned, I’m treating it as half-time in the match,” he said. Ironically, as coach of Collingwood, he used the same strategy after the drawn Grand Final against St Kilda in 2010, helping clear Magpie minds ahead of the rematch the following week that they won comfortably. Fast forward to 1994. A qualifying final for the ages at the WACA Ground (Subiaco was being developed) that went down to the final play. If there was a time when there was any real anger between the clubs, it was after this game. Collingwood came with a charge in the dying moments to trail by just two points after a goal to Jason McCartney. From the bounce and after a relayed free kick, the Pies kicked the ball inside 50 with 10 seconds to go. Looking into the blazing sun, Mick McGuane dropped a chest mark and shortly after the ball spilled to the ground, the siren sounded. In a sour end to a fantastic game, Eagles skipper John Worsfold confronted McGuane and gestured to him about the dropped mark. West Coast had the last laugh, winning the flag again that year, while the Pies entered a period of relative purgatory, not making the finals again until 2002. It was in that year the two clubs played another of their great games. The build-up to the round two clash was enormous, billed as the ‘master versus the pupil’ as Malthouse and Worsfold locked horns as coaches for the first time. It was a terrific game, with the Pies prevailing by one point. But what the 29,348 fans at the MCG likely remember most was the assured 19-possession performance from 18-year-old Eagles midfielder Chris Judd.

It was his first game for the club and he looked like a star from his very first possession. Judd was a notable figure during the 2007 semi-final between the clubs at Subiaco, alas as he watched from the stands with an injured groin. The teams were locked at 10.12 (72) apiece after four quarters, but the Pies, who won so many big games on the road in hostile circumstances under Malthouse, kicked away during extra time to win by 19 points. The Channel Seven cameras followed Judd as he crossed the ground with his teammates after the game. Perhaps they knew something. Three days later, he announced his intention to return to Victoria.

The 2018 finals series elevated the rivalry to a new level. The two clubs have long believed they match up well on each other and the addition of Justin Longmuir to Collingwood’s coaching staff that season after several years with West Coast might have played a part in that. Certainly, West Coast players noted a sense of familiarity when watching the Pies that year. The Eagles had the better of Collingwood twice during that season’s finals series. The Grand Final is rightly remembered for Dom Sheed’s magnificent set-shot from deep in the forward pocket with just seconds to go, which came after a series of contests further up the ground that West Coast won every time. “We were winning those contests and that’s what gave us the opportunity to get back in the game,” Eagles midfielder Jack Redden told the AFL Record. “Every contest in that final minute was one-on-one.” The qualifying final that preceded it was also pretty good. West Coast finished all over Collingwood, kicking 5.3 to 1.1 in the final stanza to get the win. It was a fine effort from the Magpies just to get back to the Grand Final after that. The teams have staged more great games at Optus Stadium since then. In round 17 the following year, Collingwood kept West Coast scoreless for 45 minutes in the second half and then got home on the back of a four-goal haul from Brody Mihocek to win by a point, having trailed by 16 points at the final change. The Eagles got hold of Collingwood by 66 points in round eight last year, so not much hope was held for the Pies when they returned to Perth for an elimination final later in the season. In a year of dislocation and relocation, Collingwood had been variously based in Sydney, Perth and Queensland. Western Australia’s tight border controls meant the Magpies had to keep the travelling party to the bare minimum. Coach Nathan Buckley slept in temporary accommodation. Screaming front-page headlines in the local papers labelled the visitors as “dirty”, which was

the terminology for interstate visitors living under stringent quarantine conditions. Yet the Pies weren’t bothered by any of that. “It was a different build-up, but also business as usual,” Collingwood half-back Jack Crisp said. “Given what happened last year, it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. “We embraced it and even getting away from the other destination was enjoyable.” Mason Cox got Collingwood going with a spectacular opening

It sets the scene for more compulsive viewing on Friday night as both teams come off disappointing losses last weekend. Sadly for the Pies, Adams won’t be playing. Even despite that backdrop, West Coast and Collingwood cannot help but keep us entertained. “It’s definitely a game you mark in your calendar. You just know it’s going to be a good game,” Crisp said. “You never know what’s going to happen.” For several reasons, Redden pulled the right lever when he bolted from Brisbane to join West Coast back in 2016. They travelled to the MCG to take on Collingwood last week with many pundits expecting the result to go one way, even if the Magpies hadn’t been performing at their best. Fast forward to late last Saturday night and the Giants were triumphant courtesy of an imperious display from stand-in captain Toby Greene. The club’s most dangerous forward bagged five goals for the second week in a row while picking up 18 disposals in the 30-point victory. His impact was certainly not lost on veteran midfielder Callan Ward, who gathered a game-high 37 touches. “I absolutely love the bloke, as a person and as a footballer even more,” Ward told Fox Footy. “He’s a superstar of the competition. He’s driving the standards all day, every day. “He’s a competitor, he has a crack and I love blokes like that.” Greene also manufactured eight score involvements, provided a goal assist and laid four tackles in his side’s first win of 2021. showman and the stage he loves these days is the SCG. The famous ground has been home to some of the biggest names in Australian cricket, but the modern era has also produced footy’s top drawcards and we’re talking the goalkicking variety. First there was Tony Lockett, then along came Barry Hall and now it’s Lance Franklin strutting his stuff for the red and whites of Sydney. Last Thursday he threaded three goals, including the clincher in the final term, in the Swans’ narrow win over Essendon. Three goals are par for the course for ‘Buddy’ these days, but given it was just his second game back since late 2019, it augurs well for the year ahead. A combination of an ongoing knee issue from early 2020 and then a hamstring setback meant the big fellow was sent to the spelling paddock. His games and game-time are being carefully managed, but he looks ready to explode in coming weeks.

with COL HUTCHINSON u Seven-time Sturt best and fairest Rick Davies was one of South Australia’s finest ruckmen in the 1970s and a tremendous mark. Later in his career, he moved forward and in 1983 kicked 151 goals, a then SANFL record. Nicknamed the ‘Jumbo Prince’, one of his most memorable performances was in round eight that season in the top-two clash with West Adelaide. The Double Blues, who also included Peter Motley and Neil Craig, dominated from the start, kicking nine goals to five in the first term, and by three-quarter time Davies had notched 10 goals. He booted another five in the final quarter for a club-record 15 as Sturt added 10.6 to win by 74 points.

Adelaide’s win was the first time in 50 years that the previous year’s wooden-spoon team had beaten a grand finalist in round one. I was at that 1971 game, which was also the debut match for Keith Greig and Geoff Southby. How many opening round matches have there been between the wooden-spoon team and a grand finalist from the previous year? IRWIN HIRSH, VIA EMAIL CH: The first of 15 such instances occurred in 1912. Ten years later in 1922, Essendon became the first of three wooden-spoon clubs from the previous season to beat a grand finalist, downing Carlton by 18 points. The Dons improved dramatically to finish third that year, then claim premierships in 1923 and 1924. Melbourne just fell short of upsetting Geelong in the opening round of the 1952 season. Three years later, after finishing runner-up to Footscray in 1954, the Demons easily beat the Saints, who had finished last a few months earlier. u Adelaide and Fremantle are young sides on the rise. The Crows and Dockers both recorded wins in round four and go into Sunday’s match at Adelaide Oval full of confidence. Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks could not be happier with how his side has started the season, improving to 3-1 with a 41-point win over North Melbourne. The Crows have already equalled the number of victories they recorded in the entire 2020 season and are the third-highest scoring team in the competition. It’s amazing to think last year’s wooden-spooners are nestled in the top eight and will see this as another winnable match, particularly at home. The Dockers squared their season at 2-2, beating

Hawthorn, with inaccurate goalkicking limiting the final margin to 15 points. Coach Justin Longmuir accused his players of hanging teammates out to dry in the loss to Carlton, but the return of captain Nat Fyfe gave the Dockers more experience and physicality through the midfield. Fyfe, who missed the Blues match with concussion, amassed a team-high 31 disposals, six clearances and 11 score involvements, but contributed to Fremantle’s wayward kicking for goal, finishing with six behinds. The dual Brownlow medallist will be key if Fremantle is to notch its first win outside of Western Australia this season. But on form, it’s hard to go past the resurgent Crows. ALEX ZAIA

Time to come to the AFLW party There is a strong case to say the women’s competition should not be running into the AFL season.

For a moment there, it appeared as though the AFL had forgotten about the “flexible and agile” mantra that enabled it to so artfully and successfully manage its way through 2020, the most difficult season on record. Yes, the League rammed through an injury substitute – effectively a 23rd man – in a matter of days on the eve of the season. But it also consigned to the ‘too hard basket’ what seemed a logical and doable fixture switch of the Essendon-Hawthorn season-opener from Marvel Stadium to the MCG. And it has steadfastly refused to change the roof rules at Marvel. As Victorians flocked to beaches and outdoor entertainment areas across the state to take advantage of gorgeous balmy late afternoons and evenings, the roof at Marvel Stadium remained firmly shut. Then came the scheduling of this weekend’s AFLW Grand Final and, for a time there, the League was again looking inflexible. The fixture for both the men’s and women’s competitions were released late last year, with the AFLW Grand Final firmly penciled in for this weekend. Yet when the men’s fixture dropped, there was no gap in the schedule for the women’s flag decider, which most deservedly warrants free air of its own.

Until last week, there were genuine fears the AFLW Grand Final would go head-to-head with a men’s game. But, thankfully, the League delayed the Western Bulldogs-Gold Coast game by a few hours, meaning that all eyes come 2pm Saturday will be on the Adelaide Crows and Brisbane Lions at Adelaide Oval, and rightfully so. Once we get past Saturday, the AFL has some more big decisions to make with respect to the women’s competition. The first is the timing. The clean air that AFLW gets through February and the first half of March is fantastic and fans love that the quality of play has improved markedly each year. But come the middle of March, the men’s competition kicks off and AFLW becomes a sideshow for many. In that respect, AFLW is facing the same headache as the A-League and the NBL, to name just a couple of leagues that face the perennial struggle of maneuvering their seasons to avoid clashing where possible with the might of the AFL. If flexibility and agility are to remain buzzwords at the AFL, then it is time to re-examine the best time to stage the AFLW season to give it the profile and exposure it deserves. Should it be run and done before the men’s season, with the Grand

Final permanently scheduled for the bye weekend before the men’s season starts? How about a September start for the AFLW season – there’s not that much actual men’s footy played during that month – with the Grand Final a week or two before Christmas? The AFL also needs to fast-track the admission of the four remaining clubs – Sydney, Port Adelaide, Essendon and Hawthorn – to the competition. It likely won’t happen next year, but the start of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement in 2023 is the perfect time for that last expansion phase. The naysayers will argue there isn’t enough depth of talent for 18 teams and will point to the struggles this year of winless Gold Coast and Geelong, which won just one game. But the counterpoint is the longer those four clubs are excluded, the more the AFL is actively discriminating against them because they can’t compete equally in the commercial and sponsorship marketplaces with the 14 clubs with men’s and women’s operations, not to mention hundreds of thousands of supporters of those clubs, who regard AFLW as a party to which they have still yet to be invited.
