CATS THROW FLAG RACE WIDE OPEN

I’ve got my team really wound up on contested football PORT ADELAIDE COACH KEN HINKLEY AFTER RUCKMAN SCOTT LYCETT WAS CHARGED FOR A SLING TACKLE LAST WEEKEND

PURR-FECT: Boom recruits Isaac Smith and Jeremy Cameron were outstanding in the Cats’ demolition of reigning premier Richmond.

EDITOR’S LETTER

eelong’s third quarter against Richmond last Friday in the Grand Final rematch was not just the best quarter of football played by any team in 2021, it fundamentally changed the outlook for the rest of the home and away season. Had the Tigers turned their nine-point lead into another win over the Cats, it’s likely they would have again become the raging favourites for the premiership. Instead, Geelong kicked 8.4 to 1.2 and ended up winning by 63 points to throw the race for the flag wide, wide open. It was the third-biggest win by a losing grand finalist in the first rematch of the following season in 124 years. Only Collingwood in 1971 (85 points over Carlton) and Essendon in 1952 (69 points over Geelong) were larger. The Cats got six goals from boom recruit Jeremy Cameron, five from Gary Rohan and four from Tom Hawkins. Isaac Smith and Shaun Higgins – Geelong’s other big-name signings over summer – also performed well and for the first time this year, Geelong played as well as it looked on paper.

And with Patrick Dangerfield still to return. Richmond loyalists will point to their team’s lengthy injury list, which champion midfielder Shane Edwards has joined for the foreseeable future, and a 67-point loss to Geelong in 2019 that they avenged in the finals en route to winning another flag. But this one felt different. The Tigers looked slow and fumbly and their depth is starting to be exposed. They were clearly rattled. Lose to the GWS Giants on Saturday night and the Tigers will be out of the eight.

u The Gold Coast Suns completed their 10th season in the AFL at the end of 2020 and they get to acknowledge and celebrate their first decade at Metricon Stadium in this week’s local derby with the Brisbane Lions. Without backing up over too much old ground, it’s been a tough battle for the Suns, who are yet to make a finals appearance, have turned over

two senior coaches, several assistants and many players who lacked the commitment to carve out a successful AFL career. But the League made no bones about its commitment to back a second Queensland club when the first seeds were planted by a group of local businessmen and football lovers to bid for an AFL licence in 2008.

The Tigers looked slow and fumbly ... they were clearly rattled

You can only assume that commitment will remain – certainly no one at AFL HQ has ever hinted otherwise – and the path ahead for Gold Coast’s next decade will be a fascinating watch. There is no shortage of talent on the current playing list and the Suns surely deserve an ounce of luck with a young star such as Matt Rowell, who

Again, this is not uncharted territory for them, but the gap between them and the top four will start to increase. On exposed form, the Richmond of 2021 might not be good enough to win the flag without first earning the double chance. The other stunning comeback last weekend was by the Western Bulldogs, who trailed Carlton by 27 points late in the third term at Marvel Stadium before booting eight of the last nine goals to win by 16 points. The win keeps the Bulldogs in second place and hot on the heels of the unbeaten, ladder-leading has managed just six of a possible 25 games. And just for some context, Hawthorn’s record in a similar period from start-up (1925 to the end of round eight 1935) was 30 wins, 156 losses and a draw from 187 games. By comparison, the Suns from 2011 to round eight 2021 have won 55, lost 166 and drawn two of their 223 games. AFL.com.au     AFL RECORD  5

ONE WEEK at a TIME Melbourne. Josh Bruce, who is enjoying a ripper second season with the Bulldogs, kicked five goals, while Marcus Bontempelli was in imperious form for the victors. It sets up a terrific Saturday night of football viewing, with the Tigers and the improved and dangerous Giants meeting at Marvel Stadium at the same time as Port Adelaide hosts the Western Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. The Power comfortably beat Adelaide by 49 points in a drab Showdown clash, but this will be a sterner test. At home, they will start the slimmest of favourites, but in a season where the jockeying for positions in the eight is shaping up as more enthralling than the battle to make the eight, it is an important game. The shame is they’re on simultaneously. Thursday night football anyone? It is increasingly hard to make the case for any of the clubs outside the eight to make their way in. The still-young Swans might be the most vulnerable, but who

OF THE is banging down the door to take their place? Perhaps GWS or St Kilda, but aspiring Carlton can be all but discounted after letting yet another opponent climb off the canvas. Even Blues coach David Teague’s unshakable faith in his squad is being tested now.

At the other end of the ladder, the 2021 wooden spoon might be all but decided at UTAS Stadium. Winless North Melbourne ‘visits’ the two-win Hawthorn on Saturday afternoon and, while the Kangaroos appear in better form and deserve a win, the Hawks rarely lose at their Launceston fortress.

NAB AFL Rising Star JAMES JORDON MELBOURNE

J

ames Jordon knows a good thing when he sees it and for him it is the opportunity to be part of history. Melbourne’s first premiership since 1964 is there for the taking and the third-year defender is grabbing what has been presented to him with both hands, having not missed a game all season and winning the round eight nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star. The 20-year-old, initially from Yarrawonga, was drafted to the Demons with the 33rd pick at the 2018 NAB AFL Draft via the Oakleigh Chargers and Caulfield Grammar. He didn’t play at AFL level before this season, but has slotted seamlessly into the Demons’ backline and is averaging 17 disposals a game at a 74.3 per cent disposal efficiency. His desperate chase down and tackle of Sydney’s James Rowbottom late in the final quarter at the MCG last Saturday night helped seal the deal for the Demons. ASHLEY BROWNE

t was the win Collingwood simply had to have. After a year which has seen all sorts of pressure heaped on Nathan Buckley and other key figures at the club, the Magpies’ season reached the crossroads after a meek loss to Gold Coast at the MCG in round seven left them with just one victory from the first seven rounds. Buckley stripped things back in the lead-up to the season-defining game against North Melbourne, preaching defence-first in his weekly press conference. “We’ve been licking our wounds and smarting from our recent form and we know that’s created a lot of commentary,” he said on the Thursday before the game. “We haven’t been sitting on our hands and we’re trying to find solutions that will work for us. “This week we realised that in the end when there are so many things you feel you can fix, you go back to what you know.

“We’ve re-schooled our defence shape and that’s largely where our focus has been.” While the performance wasn’t without its faults, Jordan De Goey’s six goals and Darcy Moore’s return to defence proved the difference that ultimately saw the Pies snap a five-game losing streak to record a circuit-breaking victory that, if nothing else, buys time as they seek clarity on what their future looks like. While the pressure around Collingwood will ease somewhat this week, there are still off-field issues following the announcement last Thursday week that list manager Ned Guy will depart following next month’s Mid-Season Draft. It was Guy who became the public face of the now infamous off-season which saw Adam Treloar, Jaidyn Stephenson and Tom Phillips all traded in quick succession to free up salary cap space.

This year has all been about the constant battle to calm the simmering tensions internally and externally. And that hasn’t been more apparent than last Saturday night, after a statement issued on behalf of CEO Mark Anderson strongly refuted ex-club recruiter Matt Rendell’s accusation that Guy “didn’t watch much footy” in his role as list manager. Just hours after winning their second game of the season, Collingwood’s feud against a former employee attracted plenty of headlines. What may transpire in the coming weeks and months is anyone’s guess, but one thing is for certain and that is Collingwood will continue to be one of this season’s key talking points.

AFL RECORD SECRET TO SWANS’ SUCCESS

RUB OF THE HUB The surprise secret to the Swans’ success On paper it looks like the Sydney Swans struggled with hub life in 2020, but it actually gave them greater resolve and the chance to rebuild in 2021. ASHLEY BROWNE

W

hen discussing which clubs benefited the most from hub life and the dislocation it wrought in 2020, the usual subjects come to mind. Grand finalists Richmond and Geelong handled the dislocation particularly well. So too did St Kilda. It helps when you have the gorgeous Sunshine Coast pretty much to itself for most of the season as the Saints did. The club that doesn’t feature in such discussions all that much is Sydney. And on the face of it, after a third-bottom finish in 2020, that is fair enough. But in talking to people at the Swans, what is becoming clear is that the time spent away as a group last year was the kick-starter for a season that through eight games in 2021 has yielded an impressive 5-3 record and, for now, an entrenched place in the top eight. With the wisdom of hindsight, the Swans were the perfect club to spend the last eight weeks of 2020 on the road. Established stars such as Isaac Heeney, Dane Rampe, Lance Franklin and George Hewett were injured and didn’t play for the second half of the season. Even before the Swans returned to the club to start preparing for this season, coach John Longmire was especially bullish about what the hub experience might do for his playing list, stacked as it is with young players.

8  AFL RECORD

AR09 p08-10 Feature.indd 8

“I actually wanted to jump into the hubs,” he said in the recently released book, A Season Like No Other: AFL 2020. “I was really positive about the benefits of having a young group together for a long period, spending eight weeks travelling all over Australia. “From a playing sense, you had to overlay the injuries we had, but it meant a lot of young players learning and playing while in the hub with the coaches. “So many of them got their opportunities to play and knowing they all had this chance is what kept things up and about and that was a positive of the hub.” The Swans had the youngest and smallest group in the hub. There was serious football training and development taking place through the day and the combination of missing senior personnel and the condensed season meant there were plenty of opportunities to play games. And away from football, with no partners and children as part of the group, a bond was forged among the playing group that has clearly carried though to this season. “If ever there was a group that was going to thrive in the hub environment it was ours and they really did love it,” chief executive Tom Harley said.

SEN.com.au

10/5/21 2:15 pm

The second half of 2020 allowed the likes of James Rowbottom and Justin McInerney to settle into the team. Jordan Dawson and Tom McCartin became good League footballers. Co-captains Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker selflessly invested heavily in player development. Despite not playing a game all season, Franklin dived into hub life as an unofficial forwards coach. “It held us in good stead for this year,” Parker told the AFL Record. “Last year a lot of guys thrived and got to play a lot of football. “The best way to continue to grow as a team and grow as individuals is to get that experience at senior level and a lot of young guys were able to do that.” There wasn’t a lot of hype about the Swans heading into this season. At least not externally. But then came an opening month of the season that changed all that. Sydney downed Brisbane by 31 points in the season-opener at the Gabba. Adelaide by 33 points at the SCG. And then the real stunner – Richmond by 45 points at the MCG on Easter Saturday. The older Swans played their part, but the excitement came from the kids and the most free-flowing footy seen for years. Chad Warner, a two-game player in 2020, found his groove as a tough inside midfielder. Errol Gulden, the least-heralded of the club’s 2020 draftees, looked and played like a 150-game veteran from the minute he stepped on to the ground. Parker rated the triumph over the Tigers as one of the better wins of his career. “Especially to play the way we did and for the younger guys to play in front of a large crowd at the MCG against a team that has dominated the last four years with such confidence,” he said. It catapulted the Swans from bottom-four candidates to firm finals candidates. Adding to the excitement was that the NAB AFL Rising nominees were all Sydney players – Gulden,

HITTING THE ROAD: The Swans leave Sydney for hub life for the second half of the 2020 season (above); older stars like Dane Rampe, Lance Franklin and Isaac Heeney (left) have played their part this season, but it is youngsters such as Errol Gulden and Chad Warner (below) who have provided the excitement.

line-breaking midfielder Braeden Campbell and Warner. It was the first time in the near 30-year history of the prestigious award that a club had earned a hat-trick of nominees. The Swans have long rated their kids, but this was above even their expectations. “You never go into a season thinking you are going to have three Rising Stars in the first three weeks,” list manager Kinnear Beatson said. “History will suggest they don’t all go on to have great careers, but if they’re playing well at the time, it’s a fillip for everyone at the club.” Beatson has been in the recruiting and list management caper for more than 30 years and is one of the best going around. But it’s not just the bottom-age players who have given the Swans extra boost and excitement.

AFL RECORD SECRET TO SWANS’ SUCCESS

Journeyman ruckman Tom Hickey joined the club last summer after 102 games with Gold Coast, St Kilda and West Coast, purportedly as a depth player, but his form over the season has been excellent and, for the time being, he is the club’s No. 1 ruckman.

S

ydney’s improved fortunes could not have been better timed. Nobody was spared during the calamity that was 2020, but the Swans were hit harder than most. The club lost $6 million for the year and needed access to the AFL’s negotiated line of credit with the banks to meet its financial obligations. The damage to its finances put a halt to the club’s plan to relocate its training and administration base to a redeveloped Hordern Pavilion, next to the SCG. “We took an unbelievable financial hit last year,” Harley said. “Clubs have different business models and we have a strong relationship with the SCG that is predicated on playing games there and that was taken off the table. “We weren’t able to get the turnstiles clicking and that affected us significantly.” The Swans needed a spark to get themselves going again and, more significantly, to create a buzz in the saturated Sydney sporting market. It gets said often but needs repeating over and over. Sydney, with its 10 NRL clubs, the Swans and Giants, a Super Rugby, NBL and three A-League clubs, is the toughest sporting market in Australia and, arguably, the world. If the Swans are down, then the sporting folk of Sydney will divert their attention elsewhere. Unlike the horror days of the early 1990s, there is no existential threat to the Swans when they’re losing. For the time being they are one of the AFL’s so-called ‘assisted clubs’. But the business model works far better when they are winning and the fans are coming through the gates and the SCG is rocking again. There were more than 29,000 fans there for the last-gasp win over Geelong a fortnight ago and they made the noise of a crowd twice that size.

10  AFL RECORD

AR09 p08-10 Feature.indd 10

MAKING A STATEMENT: Star midfielder Luke Parker rated the win over the Tigers as one of the best of his career, while journeyman ruckman Tom Hickey (below) has been a revelation.

“It was extraordinary,” Harley said. “Our fans are riding the journey with us and, from an overall club perspective, it’s a really exciting time to be involved.” What’s also noticeable about the renewed buzz around the Swans is that it no longer centres around Franklin. He remains the club’s biggest drawcard and Sydney is better with him prowling around the forward line. It was his three-goal haul that got the Swans over the line in round four, but he didn’t feature in any of the club’s three best wins of the season, against Brisbane, Richmond and Geelong. Everyone at Sydney is adamant that Franklin was, and continues to be, worth every cent of the $10 million or so it paid to bring him to the club in 2014. “Lance’s contribution to the Swans and the game more broadly in Sydney cannot be understated,” Harley said. This is a different rebuild for Sydney. On the back of consecutive Grand Final appearances in 2005 and 2006, the club identified a lack of readymade senior players in the 23-27-year-old age bracket which is why over the next few seasons they targeted the likes of Josh Kennedy, Ben McGlynn and Shane Mumford. This latest rebuild is largely from the bottom up and both the mystery and the excitement comes from not knowing how long it might take to come together. It could be like Carlton – taking seemingly forever – or like Essendon of 1993 or the Western Bulldogs of 2016, considerably quicker. “We have to be patient and persistent and keep driving them, and hopefully the ability to play finals comes sooner rather than later,” Beatson said. “If you can just play finals then you’re in contention and then anything can happen.” But irrespective of a finals appearance or not, the Swans know they have turned the corner. The climb back towards respectability and a healthier balance sheet is on in earnest. “Playing good football is good for business,” Harley said. “We have a great connection with our fans and members and they understand that and we hope they have a good feeling about where we’re going on and off the field.”

Geelong as it dished out a small slice of revenge on Richmond in the 2020 Grand Final rematch last Friday night. The Cats trailed by nine points at half-time but exploded after the main break, kicking 13 goals to two to come away with a thumping 63-point victory over the Tigers at the MCG. One of the main destroyers for the triumphant Cats was prized off-season recruit Jeremy Cameron, who was imperious in attack. The former Giant enjoyed his most prolific game in the blue and white hoops, returning six goals, 22 disposals, eight marks, five inside 50s and 15 score involvements. It was Cameron’s best goal return since round 23 of the 2019 season when he bagged nine for GWS against Gold Coast and his most disposals since the following match when had 25 in the elimination final against the Western Bulldogs. His display alongside Gary Rohan and Tom Hawkins delighted coach Chris Scott. “We felt like we had some firepower in the forward half,” Scott said. “He was fantastic in his first game, but last week felt a little bit flat, according to him. “He’s really hit his straps now.” Cameron formed a deadly attacking trio with Rohan (five goals) and Hawkins (four) as the Cats sent a strong message to the rest of the competition with a scintillating second-half showing. with COL HUTCHINSON INACCURATE: Giants star Toby Greene didn’t have his kicking boots on against the Bulldogs; likewise former Dog Norm Ware (inset) against the Swans in 1942.

MICHAEL THOMAS, CANBERRA, ACT CH: Records of players’ scoring shots exist for almost every match in the past 67 seasons, as well as for a high proportion of encounters during the 1930s. Print media reports often noted special examples during other eras. There have been almost 400 known cases of a player kicking at least seven behinds in a game. Of the just over 200 players to achieve this feat, Swans star forward of the 1930s, Bob Pratt, is listed a record 12 times. In the opening round of 1931, he kicked just two goals from 11 scoring shots. It is interesting to note that three current coaches appear in the general list. John Longmire booted 2.8 for North Melbourne against Collingwood in 1990, Matthew Nicks kicked 6.7 for Sydney against St Kilda in 2001 and Justin Longmuir kicked seven behinds without a goal for Fremantle against the Western Bulldogs in 2003. Apart from Greene, the only other current player to feature in the ‘off target’ list is Lance Franklin, who appears six times. In round 21, 2007, just two of his 13 scores for Hawthorn against Richmond at the MCG were goals. It is likely that windy conditions prevailed in the matches played on August 24, 1935. At Victoria Park, Melbourne’s Ron Baggott booted 4.9 against Collingwood, and at Punt Rd Oval, Richmond’s Jack Titus kicked 5.7 against Fitzroy. Remarkably, at Glenferrie Oval, teammates Jack Green (2.8) and Ted Pool (0.7) were responsible for 15 of the Hawks’ 26 behinds against Essendon.

u Malcolm Blight, a Legend in the Australian Football Hall of Fame, achieved much in his career – a Brownlow Medal, a Magarey Medal and four AFL flags as a coach and player. One of his most notable goalkicking efforts occurred after he was sacked as a coach. When Ron Barassi departed North Melbourne at the end of 1980, Blight was appointed as the Roos’ playing coach. In 1981, the club won six of its first 10 matches and was fourth on the ladder. It lost its next six, including a 114-point defeat to Geelong, and Blight was sacked.

In round 17, under new coach Barry Cable, North trailed lowly Footscray at the Western Oval by 40 points at quarter-time. Inspired by Blight, who kicked 11.6 from 23 disposals and 12 marks, the Roos rebounded to win by nine points. He booted 8.6 against St Kilda the next week. Blight later became Woodville captain-coach and in 1985 kicked 126 goals, including a best haul of 14, to top the SANFL goalkicking. MARK GENGE

INJURY CHECK

DE GOEY HITS ROOS FOR SIX

u When Jordan De Goey was concussed against the West Coast Eagles

back in round five, he managed to make headlines after being cleaned up at a centre bounce. The Collingwood star was spotted retrieving his mobile phone from a storage case in the rooms while the game was in progress, a move which breached AFL protocols around match-day integrity. Magpies coach Nathan Buckley staunchly defended De Goey saying he was concussed and “not thinking straight”, but the League didn’t buy that one and the club was fined $20,000. De Goey sat out the following week’s loss to Essendon on Anzac Day and, like many teammates, was below his best in the shock loss to Gold Coast in round seven. But he was back with a bang last week against North Melbourne, probably taking out a few personal and team frustrations on the bottom-placed Kangaroos. He bagged an equal career-high six goals from his 17 disposals and was the difference as the Magpies battled to shake off the plucky Roos.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK u With just three per cent ownership, Mitch Duncan (135) could be the best Fantasy player that so few have in their Fantasy Classic teams. The Cat missed the first two rounds, but is averaging 121 for the past six rounds and an AFL-high

play in North Melbourne’s backline, disposing of the ball by foot 30 times while taking eight marks. In the same game, Darcy Moore (134) moved back to his natural position in the defensive 50 to take 19 marks. To keep the trend of big scores from defenders going, Callum Mills (133), Daniel Rich (131), Jack Crisp (126) and Sam Docherty (123) showed that upgrading to premium DEFs is the way to attack this season.

TOP ROUND 8 SCORERS 132 in the past three. His 135 in round eight came from 30 disposals, 10 marks and seven tackles. Duncan is doing all the right things for his coaches, including heading down back and getting the cheeky +3s by taking the kick-ins.

DEF, $515,000 The hard-nosed Dee made a fine return from injury, and in the role we wanted to see, spending plenty of time in the middle. He had 31 touches and seven tackles on his way to 100. He has a BE of just 44.

WESTERN BULLDOGS

DEF, $573,000 The creative Dog has officially bottomed out after a $2K price drop after scoring 92 against the Blues. He was saved by a big last quarter when he returned to the back half following a failed move forward. He now carries a BE of just 75.

The popular Swan has been outstanding, averaging 78 to go with a price increase of $320K. Although his scoring and price increases have slowed, he has the valuable round 14 bye and a great match-up this week against the Pies.

If you didn’t offload the big forward last week, his score of 20 in the Showdown all but confirms that trading him needs to be a priority. His price dropped by $69K after that effort and he now has a BE of 148.

MELBOURNE

MID, $471,000 The mature-age Dee is making the most of the opportunities in the midfield and his scoring has reflected that with 91 and 95 the past two weeks, which gives him a BE of just 30. He is a tackling machine, with 15 in that fortnight.

CHRIS BURGESS

GOLD COAST SUNS

DEF/RUC, $327,000

ERROL GULDEN FWD/MID, $460,000

The young gun has done his job and it’s time to move him on before his price continues to drop. It looks like he could do with a rest after just nine possessions and no marks for a season-low 44. Has a BE of 88 leading into this week.

DEVEN ROBERTSON

BRISBANE LIONS

MID/FWD, $345,000

After a shaky start to the year marred by injury, the young gun is hitting his straps and his BE of just 35 suggests the time is right to bring him in. His season-high 105 in the Showdown gives him a three-game average of 86. Bargain.

The undersized ruck isn’t setting the world on fire, but continues to keep the scores ticking over and as we approach the byes, he keeps getting a game. He has a BE of just 35, which will also ensure more growth.

The youngster is going to be a gun but, as of now, could be used as part of an upgrade trade to a fallen premium. He has scored just 44 and 36 in the past two weeks while playing under 70 per cent game-time on both occasions.

u Last round we saw some big individual quarters. Matt Guelfi scored 59 points in the last term when he came on as the medical substitute. Jack Crisp and Jack Billings had 58 points in a quarter.

u I pride myself on giving players a ‘rocket’ on Twitter if they’re not performing. Jordan De Goey reportedly copped one from the club and responded with his first ton of the season. Thanks, Pies!

u If you haven’t started looking at your bye structure, do it now and adjust your trades accordingly. Usually we try to have more players in our squads from the latter bye rounds (13-14).

AFL RECORD PROMOTION

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

The Gold Coast SUNS will celebrate a 10-year journey that’s been filled with many memorable moments.

T

hey say time flies … and this surely rings true for the thousands of fans who packed Metricon Stadium 10 years ago this month for the Gold Coast SUNS’ first game at home. This weekend the SUNS officially celebrate that 10-year milestone at their much-loved stadium. Gold Coast’s first AFL game at home was actually played on Saturday, May 28, 2011. But given the club will be in Darwin playing the Hawks that weekend in 2021, the moment will be celebrated a little early. And what better way to celebrate the milestone than a blockbuster QClash against local rivals the

54  AFL RECORD

Brisbane Lions (the SUNS won the first QClash that season). The club will use this game to reflect, remember and celebrate the journey it has been on and the many highs and lows experienced at its iconic home ground. And it will be a time to discuss how the best is yet to come. Challenge Accepted. Ten years at Metricon Stadium has gone by fast, but the club has learned so much and is better for it. It has prepared the SUNS for a brighter future, for an inaugural finals appearance in the near future and for a genuine crack at a flag in its second decade. The building blocks are there and 10 years’ worth of tough lessons have been learned.

BRIGHTER FUTURE: The hard work of stars such as David Swallow and former champion Gary Ablett (right) has given loyal fans the hope of bigger things to come.

The club will reflect, remember and celebrate the journey

So this weekend, the SUNS and their loyal fans will celebrate this milestone together by remembering the contribution of former stars such as Gary Ablett and Michael Rischitelli while cheering on the next generation including Noah Anderson, Izak Rankine, Jack Lukosius, Ben King and many more. While much has changed, some things have not. Incredibly, David Swallow, Jarrod Harbrow, Sam Day, Rory Thompson and Zac Smith are still running around for the SUNS (albeit in the recovery group for some), just as they were in 2011. No one has played more games for the club than Harbrow (191) and Swallow (162) . No one has spent more time running around Metricon Stadium over the past 10 years and fans have seen them grow from boys to men. From talented young stars into respected AFL leaders. But as good as Metricon Stadium is, really, it’s just a concrete building without the fans filling the stands. This weekend is also about 10 years of loyal support from SUNS members and supporters. It’s a time to celebrate this club – its players, supporters, staff and business partners. And it’s a time to celebrate 10 years at home.

Match Preview

u Fresh off a third successive Showdown win, Port Adelaide would be entering round nine feeling pretty good about itself. The Power saw off the challenge from Adelaide to bank their sixth win of the season, which has them sitting in third position. It sets up a fascinating meeting with the second-placed Western Bulldogs, who will be chipper after chasing down Carlton to return to winning ways. These sides have met at Adelaide Oval twice in the past two seasons, enjoying one win apiece. Ken Hinkley has his side up and about on home soil this year with four wins from four and they will hope to strengthen that form when

68  AFL RECORD

GamePreview F.indd 68

WESTERN BULLDOGS a fellow top-four hopeful comes to town. The Bulldogs trailed the Blues by 27 points in the third quarter last weekend, but fought their way back. In enemy territory, Luke Beveridge will be intent on avoiding a similar scenario against a much better opponent. The club is in pursuit of its 900th win in the history of Footscray/Western Bulldogs and to do it on the road against a genuine contender would be some achievement. This has the potential to be a high-quality affair given the ability of both sides, but the home comforts narrowly give the Power the nod. ANDREW SLEVISON

Highest score: 25.16 (166), round 7, 2006, at Football Park. Lowest score: 5.4 (34), round 19, 2018, at Mars Stadium. Away record: 5-10 Home record: 9-7 Greatest winning margin: 93 points, round 12, 2009, at TIO Stadium. Longest winning sequence: 7, round 14, 2007, to round 10, 2013. Most goals in a game: 7, Chris Grant, round 3, 2000, at Marvel Stadium.

Prediction: Port Adelaide by 11 points

FILLING THE VOID: Saint Jack Sinclair soars for a mark in the round five Thursday night clash against the Tigers; (above right) the traditional naming of teams is set for a welcome return.

There is no harm in the AFL admitting it got this one wrong

Through much of 2020, there were games every night of the week and clubs were playing off four- and five-day breaks, so this made a whole bunch of sense. But in 2021, with the return of the normal fixture, there has been a call for the traditional team selections to also make a reappearance. It is plainly the right call. Team news isn’t what it used to be; in most cases major injury news, the naming of debutants and the return of star players is confirmed earlier in the week. But fans get a level of comfort handing their tips in each Friday, having been able to scan their phones or the back pages of the paper to see the ins and outs. What else is there to talk about over the coffee cart? The AFL isn’t quite sure what to do with Thursday nights.

With football back to normal in 2021, the AFL must bring back Thursday night team selection.

94  AFL RECORD

BACKS

Hawthorn v Collingwood (MCG) (N) 7.50pm

he good news is that the AFL does have a track record of walking back decisions that were shown to be vastly unpopular with the football public. The bad news is you have to go back a very long time to find some examples. In 1973, the 10-year-rule was introduced, giving players with a decade of service a free and automatic clearance to another club. It was a form of free agency, truth be told, but footy fans back then, who were not brought up on a diet of NBA and NFL, could not stomach it and it was abolished after a few months. In 1988, the League somehow ruled that players who received a free kick must do precisely that – kick the ball – but the move was so counterintuitive to the direction the game was moving that within two years players were permitted to dispose of the ball by foot or hand if they won a free. We might be heading there again, with the AFL on the verge of listening to the people and reinstating Thursday night team selections. It was in this very space back in February that the AFL Record broke the news that Thursday night team announcements, which were scrapped by necessity during last year’s COVID-affected season, would not be coming back and that clubs were again only required to name their teams at 6.20pm the night before each game.

The early-season games attracted huge TV ratings, but there are significant parts of the football community, including club members, who can’t get to them because it is a school night, because of work commitments or they live in the country and getting there and especially home again is difficult. To play games every Thursday night would likely require major fixture shuffling from the AFL and fairness would require every team to make at least one appearance, which goes against the AFL’s stated philosophy of playing its marquee match-ups and the better teams in the prime-time slots. Thursday nights, or Fridays for that matter, don’t warrant mediocre teams such as North Melbourne, Hawthorn, Gold Coast and Adelaide. Collingwood and Essendon might not get a look in for some time, either. So until Thursday night footy resumes in the middle of winter, timed to coincide with school holidays, the football diet on that important night of the week is a bit thin. Granted, The Front Bar is outstanding, but the live VFL footy on Foxtel isn’t cutting it from a ratings perspective. Consider this: 10,000 more people watched a repeat of Are You Being Served? a fortnight ago. The AFL is in the content business and needs to do more with Thursday nights. If it cannot guarantee live League footy, then the next best thing is to deliver us all the team selections to at least start the conversation about the weekend. Tipsters, fantasy footy players and punters, who also comprise a sizeable part of the AFL’s market, will offer a vote of thanks. There is no harm in the AFL admitting it got this one wrong.
