EDITOR’S LETTER
here is no perfect time in which to play the Grand Final rematch, but a cool, crisp May evening with the season nearly a third complete seems as good a moment as any. Richmond and Geelong staged an entertaining, albeit vastly different Grand Final in 2020, held at the Gabba, under lights and in late October. The Cats were up by 22 points deep into the second term before Tiger superstar Dustin Martin donned the cape and steered his team back into the game and on to an emphatic 31-point win with a sublime four-goal effort. It was a particularly disappointing result for the Cats who had also had their feet on Richmond’s throat at half-time in the 2019 preliminary final, leading by 21 points, only to fall away and lose by 19 points. Geelong has changed things up from a personnel standpoint. Jeremy Cameron has joined Tom Hawkins in the forward line and
will throw a different look at the Tiger defence than they’re used to against the Cats. Geelong also brought Isaac Smith across from Hawthorn as a free agent, not to further fortify its already impressive record at home, but to help it on the MCG where he played so often and in so many big games for the Hawks. But Martin’s shadow looms large over this one. The three-time Norm Smith medallist missed last week because
u There would be sports editors and TV and radio producers rubbing their hands with glee right now. The very mention of Collingwood always guarantees extra sales or ratings points. Headlines like ‘Pies On Fire’ or ‘Hot Pies Destroy (insert opponent’s name)’ are good for business. But when the Magpies are at the other end of the scale, like
they are now, it’s manna from heaven for those sports editors and producers. Collingwood dominated the back pages and airwaves in the lead-up to its much-anticipated game against North Melbourne on Saturday at Marvel Stadium. It might be 17th (Collingwood) v 18th (North), but every photographer and TV cameraman will be focusing on one person come 4.35pm.
Martin’s shadow looms large over this one With his contract up at the end of 2021 and his side sitting 1-6, Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley is facing a storm of internal and external pressure. Buckley is a smart man and he knew what he was in for from the day he signed as a Collingwood player way back at the end of 1993 after one season with Brisbane.
of the AFL’s mandatory concussion protocols, but it was also the chance to rest a niggling foot injury. After a brief trip to visit his father in New Zealand, he will be refreshed and raring to go and shapes as the logical replacement for skipper Trent Cotchin who will miss with a hamstring strain. Whatever doubts there were over the Tigers and their capacity to win a fourth flag in five years were put to bed with a powerful second half against the previously unbeaten Other than a premiership, all the cards fell his way as a player. As senior coach since 2012, he and the Magpies have ridden a rollercoaster, but now that ride has bottomed out. Buckley is a pragmatist and knows only too well what it means if the worst-case scenario happens and the Magpies lose this week. The natives won’t be restless, they will be rioting. ONE WEEK at a TIME Western Bulldogs, in which they turned a 19-point deficit into a 24-point win. They had lost three of four before that, but looked to be as good as ever in dismantling the Dogs. The Cats were left smarting at the SCG after two late non-decisions might have robbed them of a win over the Sydney Swans. Cameron wasn’t paid a mark almost in front of goals with only a few seconds remaining after the umpire incorrectly ruled that the ball hadn’t travelled 15 metres, while the final siren rang an instant before Joel Selwood would likely have received a free kick against James Rowbottom for incorrect disposal. But the Cats only had themselves to blame for letting the Swans back into a game in which they had eight more scoring shots. And nor was there much sympathy for Geelong, which would likely have lost to the Brisbane Lions in round two had Mark Blicavs been correctly penalised for incorrect disposal
CRUNCH TIME: Another Pies loss would intensify the scrutiny on Nathan Buckley.
in the goalsquare with just seconds remaining. Apart from the MCG, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium late Saturday afternoon as a floundering Collingwood attempts to arrest its five-game losing streak against winless North Melbourne. The Pies were woeful in losing to Gold Coast at the MCG last week and another loss threatens to further diminish support for
embattled coach Nathan Buckley, who wants to remain in the job beyond this season. The game that will fly under the radar this week is the Gold Coast-St Kilda clash at Metricon Stadium. The past four clashes between them have been decided by two, one, four and four points again, each time in the Saints’ favour. Surely the improving Suns are due.
NAB AFL Rising Star LUKE JACKSON MELBOURNE
T
here are all sorts of reasons behind Melbourne’s best start to a season for 56 years and one of them is emerging big man Luke Jackson, who is enjoying an excellent second season. The third pick at the 2019 NAB AFL Draft, Jackson earned a Rising Star nomination in 2020 after kicking two goals for the Demons against Adelaide in round 10. He won his second nomination last weekend after a powerful 22-possession outing against North Melbourne at Blundstone Arena. As he grows more powerful and confident, the 199cm Jackson is able to spend more time through the midfield and his heat map from last weekend shows him tracking through both sides of the ground and using the ball at 70 per cent efficiency. The former East Fremantle youngster overcame hamstring injuries last year to make a good impression with the Demons, but is showing the benefits of an excellent and uninterrupted pre-season in 2021. ou have likely read all about the incredible Bob Quinn. Now it is time for the film. South Australian filmmaker and diehard Port Adelaide supporter Kane McKay has brought Quinn’s gripping story back to life in Rover of Tobruk, a documentary that had its first screening on the big screen at Adelaide Oval before the Power’s round six clash against St Kilda a fortnight ago. Quinn had already played in three Port Adelaide premiership teams, captained the club and won the 1938 Magarey Medal when he went off to war in 1941. While serving in Tobruk, North Libya, he was awarded a Military Medal for his incredible bravery while leading his battalion to blow up a barbed wire barrier and attack an enemy post that
was inflicting all sorts of damage on Allied forces. He was then transferred to the Pacific front where in 1943 he suffered serious knee, arm and facial injuries while fighting in New Guinea. Yet the following year he resumed his football career with Port Adelaide, winning another Magarey Medal in 1945, two more Port Adelaide best and fairests and captaining South Australia to a draw against Victoria at the MCG in 1946. It was after reading various accounts of Quinn’s life that McKay, a six-year RAAF veteran himself, including a tour of Afghanistan, decided there needed to be a film. So he began the process in late 2019, enlisting former Port SANFL skipper Steve Summerton to play
Quinn in several stylised military and football re-enactment scenes and Adelaide AFLW star Erin Phillips to be the narrator. McKay said he hopes the 23-minute film, produced in partnership with Adelaide-based Beyond Content, will introduce Quinn to younger Port Adelaide supporters and others who are unaware of the story of the player he believes runs second only to Russell Ebert as the club’s greatest. “If one person sees the film then walks past the Bob Quinn Stand at Alberton or through the Bob Quinn Gates at Adelaide Oval and understands why they carry his name, then that’s a win for me,” he said. Rover of Tobruk will appear on TV and be available for streaming shortly. Visit beyondcontent.com.au for details.

hen Frank Costa took over as president of Geelong in 1999, the club was mired in debt and playing at a venue so antiquated that moving all its home games up the road to Melbourne was a distinct possibility. The next premiership seemed an eternity away. When he finished up 11 years later, there was money in the bank, Kardinia Park was on its way to becoming one of the premier venues in the AFL and the 2007 and 2009 premiership cups were safely in the club’s keeping. Another flag followed in 2011. Costa, who passed away last weekend, was already one of the most respected and well-known business and philanthropic leaders in Geelong when he took over the presidency. He grew the family business from a small fruit shop on Moorabool St and turned it into a national fruit and vegetable empire. Cats chief executive Brian Cook, whose hiring from West Coast was one of Costa’s first, and most important, moves at Geelong, led the tributes. “Frank undertook his role with much enthusiasm and generated

t was fitting the AFL Record featured Geelong’s oldest living player Alex Mathieson in its 2017 Grand Final edition. The then 96-year-old was described as “inspiringly active for his age”. Almost four years on and Mathieson is still “inspiringly active” as he prepares to celebrate his 100th birthday next Tuesday (May 11). He might be the oldest living Cat, but he laments a few things he can’t do these days. “Had to give away mowing the lawns a year or two ago, my back’s a bit wonky,” he said in the dining room of his home in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. “See that garage out there?” he points to where his car used to be parked. “Built it myself. But I’m not allowed to drive anymore so there’s plenty of room in it now!” Mathieson is indeed an inspiration. You won’t find him on any long list of honours at GMHBA Stadium, but what he did for his country and his club deserves recognition. He played seven games in 1944 after being recruited from local club Newtown & Chilwell. Mathieson made his debut in round five against Essendon at

Windy Hill and proudly remembers kicking a goal with his first kick. “Five minutes into the first quarter I nailed (Essendon’s) ‘Duffy’ Plummer in a tackle, got a free kick and kicked a goal. Never played forward in my life, I was always centre half-back or full-back,” he said. It was the only goal of Mathieson’s seven-game career. He played his last game in round 11 as he juggled his football commitments with his real job – serving in the Royal Australian Air Force. Later in the year, the then 23-year-old was sent to New Guinea and for the next 15 months was stationed north. Upon his discharge, he returned, married local Geelong girl Norma – the love of his life for 70 years until she passed away in 2016 – but then discovered he was “a bit crook”. He’d contracted malaria and the first two years of his married life saw him ailing badly. “I was 11 stone (70kg) and my body was weak, I had the sweats all the time … never played League footy again,” he said. Fortunately, he eventually recovered and raised a family, many of whom will be at the big celebration this weekend at his local RSL.

SMITH THE WORLD’S AT HIS FEET In just over two seasons, Bailey Smith has made his mark on the field and off it. The rising Bulldogs star is now one of the most marketable young players in the game. ASHLEY BROWNE
W
estern Bulldogs chief executive Ameet Bains was out walking his dog one day late last year, not long after the club returned from its Queensland hub. As he turned the corner, he spotted rising Bulldogs midfield star Bailey Smith coming from the opposite direction, walking his two dogs. They stopped to have a chat. Or at least attempted to. “I reckon in the course of 10 minutes, we only spoke for perhaps a minute because different groups of boys and girls came past and wanted to chat. And he spoke to them all,” Bains told the AFL Record. “Eventually I patted him on the shoulder and said, ‘See you later’. I had to keep going.” Bains and the Bulldogs are getting used to that sort of thing. Smith is becoming a phenomenon, a midfield weapon on the field and one of the most popular and marketable off it. With the flair, the hair, the looks and the engaging personality, he has the world at his feet. It starts with the football. The pedigree is excellent. He was the seventh selection at the 2018 NAB AFL Draft. The Bulldogs already had high expectations and then he walked through the door. “Bailey came in and blew everyone away with his resilience and competitiveness,” Bulldogs senior assistant coach Steven King said. What was noticeable at Whitten Oval was how he attacked his training from the get-go. “We saw him run and break lines and then saw him in the gym and we just thought this is an exceptional athlete, but you never know how that translates into match simulation,” King said. “But he was never intimidated by bigger bodies or mature players. He was up for it.” Smith made his debut for the Bulldogs in the opening round of 2019 and hasn’t missed a game since. He brought energy and work rate to the side that according to King “lifted his teammates”. He can play as an inside midfielder because of his strength and high football IQ, while his endurance and speed make him a high-end outside midfielder. He’s done plenty of both through his 48 games in two-and-a-bit seasons, although the addition of Adam Treloar to

an already-stacked midfield has meant more time outside the centre square in 2021. And they hope it can remain that way for the duration of the home and away season while Josh Dunkley recovers from a shoulder reconstruction. “This year has been another education for him about a different role,” King said. “I feel he has all the attributes to be one of the elite wingmen in the competition with his ability to cover the ground and his repeat speed and he has this combative side that not many wingmen have in their game and that’s natural for Bailey.”

DASHING DOG: Aggression and flair were traits of the young Bailey Smith, pictured with Vic Metro right, and he has carried that into his AFL career. Off the field, he has become an Instagram sensation (below).
Ah yes, the combativeness. Smith’s ultra-competitiveness has raised eyebrows in some quarters this year with Dermott Brereton, himself no shrinking violet when he played, calling Smith out for what he believed was belittlement and taunting of opponents, including North Melbourne skipper Jack Ziebell during the Good Friday clash. “He had an opponent against the West Coast Eagles who dived headlong to try and stop his snap, Bailey snaps it, goes out of his way to retrace his steps to step over the Eagles player, who’s still lying on the ground thinking ‘woe is me’ … that was determined to be a humiliation of the vanquished. I just want him to stop it,” Brereton said on SEN while admitting to be a huge fan of Smith as a player. The Dogs would prefer to call it aggression and flair, saying it was part of his make-up when he was emerging through the pathway programs and that it had major appeal to a club in the midst of a mini recalibration after winning the 2016 flag. “A couple of elements might have been misconstrued,” Bains said. “That’s just the way he plays. It hasn’t spilled over into any undisciplined acts and is part and parcel of the game in many respects.” For his part, Smith has heard the chatter. In a recent interview with Sports Day, he told hosts Gerard Healy and Sam McClure
that it wasn’t the way he wanted to play or perhaps even be portrayed. “But if you view AFL football as a battle, it is very hard to switch off at times and leave no prisoners. There’s a fine line between respect and rubbing their noses in it,” he said. “I try to be as ruthless as I can to an extent just because it helps me stay locked in and focused when I play I suppose and keeps me focused and on my toes.” Smith might have been at home in the Australian Test cricket teams of the Steve Waugh era, famed for their ‘mental intimidation’, but it is not too often that a player with such an edge also admits to having some mental demons and for feeling especially anxious before a game. In a candid discussion with AFL.com.au on the eve of the season, Smith described himself as an “over-thinker” and “perfectionist”. “We’ve all got demons, we’ve all got things that make us anxious or struggle, and I’ve got my own mental health which I deal with, as I’m sure lots of people do, but it’s just not spoken about as much as I’d like it, and I know we are getting better as a society and as footballers, talking about it, but we can be seen as easy going, living the dream, loving it,” he said. Smith certainly has it going off the field. According to figures provided to the AFL by CrowdTangle, a social media AFL.com.au AFL RECORD 13

analytics platform, he is the most popular player on social media. He has added 120,000 new followers in the past 12 months, three times as many as the next best player, Matt Rowell.
PAUL CONNORS
His off-field brand is in the hands of leading player manager Paul Connors, a longtime family friend who lives just around the corner. For now, he is picking through various commercial opportunities and, given that Smith is yet to turn 21, time is on their side. Connors is borrowing from the playbook of another from his

stable, Nic Naitanui, with whom he thinks Smith has a bit in common, albeit a fair bit younger. “He’s not going to promote things he doesn’t believe in and at the moment he’s just doing it for fun. He’s got his own style and he is his own person,” Connors said. “He knows what he wants to portray through his social media, but it is his love of footy that comes through. It always is, and always will be, number one.” He is one of the most engaging people at the Bulldogs, polite and respectful and happy to initiate deep conversations with anyone. He also has the rare gift of being equally as comfortable pressing the flesh with well-heeled sponsors as he is playing kick-to-kick with adoring boys and girls at school clinics. Those who have seen it will attest to it – and the data confirms it – that his popularity among 12-to-17-year-olds is off the charts. At East Malvern, his beloved junior club, various teams are named for former players who have gone to greater heights in the game. The under-nine, 10 and 11 teams are known as the ‘Smiths’. Sports marketing types speak

of a trend for younger sports fans to follow athletes ahead of teams – with LeBron James the leading example of this – which leaves the Bulldogs well placed for a surge in support with Smith, Marcus Bontempelli and Aaron Naughton among their ranks. And Jamarra Ugle-Hagan is still to come. “We have a suite of players who are unique and admired by fans across the competition,” Bains said. Smith is tracking well to head that list and is putting in the work to get there. All the other stuff will then follow. “There’s lots of room to improve and that’s what we see each week in our meetings and our edits and we see that as exciting,” he told Sports Day. “It doesn’t get boring, because when you have so much to improve on, the sky is the limit.”

Suns with their first trip to the MCG since August 2019 and it was certainly worth the wait. The Suns produced their third win of the season and second in succession by beating Collingwood by 24 points on a sunny Saturday on the hallowed turf. It also marked a return to the old haunt of Brandon Ellis, who was back at the ’G for the first time since Richmond’s 2019 Grand Final triumph. The two-time flag winner with the Tigers enjoyed a day out with a familiar setting as the backdrop, finishing with a game-high 35 disposals, which is his biggest haul for the Suns. Remarkably, the 27-year-old went at 97 per cent disposal efficiency. Ellis also had a career-best 26 kicks and took an equal career-high 16 marks, plus three inside 50s and a goal. He provided plenty of run and drive off a wing and attracted high praise from coach Stuart Dew. “He’s come from a really good system,” Dew said. “He understands and he appreciates AFL footy. “He’s a giver, to people on and off the field, and within his own family and his network. “That kind of character trait for us is a hard worker that drives the group. “We love having him at the Gold Coast Suns, he’s loving his time and he’s an advocate for us as we are (for him).” ANDREW SLEVISON

with LACHLAN ESSING u ‘Unique Goalkicking
With Lauren Arnell retiring in her mid-30s after the Grand Final, I was wondering who is the oldest player to have played in the AFLW? BRITTANY GARNER, AUBURN, VIC LE: GWS Giants forward Cora Staunton was the oldest player in the competition in 2021. The Irishwoman turns 40 in December and if she plays on next season will overtake former Collingwood defender Cecilia McIntosh as the oldest player in the AFLW’s short history. McIntosh played 17 games for the Magpies between 2017-19, including the historic first game. Before football, she enjoyed a successful javelin career, winning a silver medal in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and also represented Australia in the bobsled in the 2010 Winter Olympics. McIntosh also holds the record for the oldest player on AFLW debut at 37 years and 227 days. Former Adelaide ruck Jess Foley was the oldest player to win a premiership medallion,

aged 35 years and 345 days when the Crows won the 2019 Grand Final. Another Crow, two-time premiership player Erin Phillips, holds the record for the oldest player to win the league’s Best and Fairest, being 33 years and 316 days when she claimed her second award in 2019. Like Phillips, many of the AFLW players in the 30-plus age group had previously represented Australia or their state in other sports before crossing to football, including Jess Bibby (basketball), Nicole Callinan (indoor cricket) and Emma Mackie (cycling). It goes to show age is just a number.
CAN YOU ASSIST? u The AFL is seeking information regarding the following former players – Ted Heffernan (Carlton 1897), Sam A. Reid (Carlton 1897), Joe Marr (Carlton, Essendon 1900-03), Tom F. Lee (Collingwood 1897-98), Paddy McDonald (Essendon 1918-19), Jack James McKenzie (Essendon 1929), George Prismall (Essendon 1935), Ray P. Ross (Essendon 1921), Charlie Jenkins (Fitzroy 1898), Eric Watson (Fitzroy 1911), Alf Neeson (Fitzroy, Hawthorn 1935-38), George Lockwood (Geelong, Collingwood 1899-1904) and Bill Woods (Geelong 1909).
Feat at MCG’ was the headline in The Football Record on May 19, 1934, following a remarkable match in round two between Melbourne and Hawthorn. Of the 20 goals scored by Melbourne, there were only three goalkickers – Alan La Fontaine kicked nine, Jack Mueller seven and Percy Beames four. La Fontaine and 18-year-old Mueller were both playing in just their second VFL matches. Hawthorn’s six goals were kicked by two players – Jack Green with four and Ted Pool two. In all, the 26 goals in the game came from just five players, with the Redlegs winning 20.13 (133) to 6.8 (44). La Fontaine, Mueller and Beames were teammates in Melbourne’s successive premierships in 1939-41. Mueller also played in the 1948 flag and, despite losing the tops of two fingers in a work accident early in his career, became a match-winning forward. In the 1946 finals series, he kicked 18 goals, and in 1948, kicked eight in the preliminary final, followed by six in both the tied Grand Final and the replay. MARK GENGE

RIDING THE CREST OF A SAINTS’ WIN
u One summer doesn’t make a swallow
so they say and in footy parlance one win doesn’t turn a season around. But there was a significant addition to St Kilda’s playing stocks last weekend that played a big part in the Saints returning to their winning ways. After losing their previous two games by 86 points (to Richmond)
22 AFL RECORD
and 54 points (to Port Adelaide), the Saints clicked into top gear in round seven with a 69-point thumping of Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium. And it was no coincidence that the appearance of veteran big man Paddy Ryder in his first game for 2021 helped to spark the listless Saints. Back in March, Ryder took personal leave to
spend time with his family and elders in the community, and after a warm-up game with Sandringham in the VFL the previous week, he was back in the big time. Working in tandem with ruck tyro Rowan Marshall, Ryder dominated the hit-outs with 35, including this clear winner against Hawthorn skipper Ben McEvoy.

FANTASY PIG OF THE WEEK
u Those who picked Brandon Ellis (169) in Fantasy Draft, with a whopping average draft pick of 119, will know full well he’s had a dominant season. Averaging 123 since round two, the Sun had a day out at the MCG, collecting 35 disposals and a game-high 16 marks. He laid five tackles and kicked a goal for good measure. A perfect Fantasy game, getting into the right spots for all the +6s (mark and kicks).
HONOURABLE MENTIONS
u In round six it was Jack Ziebell racking up points in the Roos’ backline, but last
week it was Aaron Hall (143) who took a team-high 12 marks and was the top scorer in the game. Carlton’s main man in the engine room, Sam Wash (127), is averaging 123 in the past three weeks. Similarly, Tim Taranto (140) has improved his season average to 111, close to his 2019 output where he averaged 113 in 22 games. Tim Kelly (141) came through with the goods in the final game of the round, collecting 42 disposals and nine tackles.

It may be upgrade season, but this rookie is going nowhere! He is a gun. For the second week in a row he reached triple figures after overcoming a big knock to return to the ground for 104. He has a BE of 26 and can sit in the forward line for the year at this rate.
What an outstanding ride it has been for big ‘Tex’, increasing his value by a whopping $250K since the start of the year. Unfortunately, his scores are drying up and it looks like a good time to upgrade while he is at top dollar with a BE of 134.

Power v Crows SHOW OF POWER: Charlie Dixon shrugs off Tom Doedee in Port Adelaide’s big Showdown win last season.
ROUND
8
HEAD to HEAD Played 48: Port Adelaide 24, Adelaide Crows 24. Since 2016: Port Adelaide 3, Adelaide Crows 6. Most recent game: round 2, 2020, Port Adelaide d Adelaide Crows by 75 points at Adelaide Oval. Highest attendance: 53,698, round 3, 2017, at Adelaide Oval.
PORT ADELAIDE
Match Preview
u Showdown 49 throws up an intriguing battle between Port Adelaide and Adelaide at Adelaide Oval on Saturday night. The Power and Crows both enter the local derby in substandard form following heavy defeats last weekend. Port was beaten by 49 points by the Lions in Brisbane, while Adelaide was brushed aside at home by GWS by 67 points. In poor reading for the South Australian sides, they combined for just nine goals and kicked the lowest scores of the round. The neutrals will be hoping both teams are back in scoring touch otherwise this promises to be a dour affair. The Power drew level with the Crows at 24 wins apiece back in round two last year and have won the past two
68 AFL RECORD
GamePreview F.indd 68
Showdowns by an average of 66 points, scoring more than 100 points on both occasions. Ken Hinkley’s side has played well at home this year, winning all three games, including two 54-point triumphs, whereas Matthew Nicks’ Crows started well with two home victories but have dropped their past two. At their best, the Power should win comfortably, but we know 2021 hasn’t always gone to plan for hot favourites. However, Port – sans prison bars – should see this one out, but not before withstanding a strong early challenge from the Crows. ANDREW SLEVISON
Highest score: 23.15 (153), round 3, 2001, at Football Park. Lowest score: 5.10 (40), first semi-final, 2005, at Football Park. Home record: 14-10. Away record: 10-14. Greatest winning margin: 75 points, round 2, 2020, at Adelaide Oval. Longest winning sequence: 7, round 22, 2000, to round 22, 2003. Most goals in a game: 7, Warren Tredrea, round 7, 2004, at Football Park.
ADELAIDE CROWS
Highest score: 22.12 (144), round 19, 1998, at Football Park; 22.12 (144), round 2, 2016, at Adelaide Oval. Lowest score: 5.5 (35), round 2, 2020, at Adelaide Oval. Away record: 10-14. Home record: 14-10. Greatest winning margin: 84 points, round 20, 2017, at Adelaide Oval. Longest winning sequence: 5, round 16, 2015, to round 20, 2017. Most goals in a game: 7, Tony Modra, round 4, 1997, at Football Park; Peter Vardy, round 19, 1998, at Football Park.
Prediction: Port Adelaide by 32 points

Historic Showdown
u It will be a historic occasion when the round six SANFL Statewide Super League Showdown between Port Adelaide and Adelaide is played for the first time as a curtain-raiser to the AFL Showdown at Adelaide Oval on Saturday at 3.35pm. The two AFL clubs’ state league teams will be searching for their third win of the season. Port is coming off its most convincing victory of the year, thrashing reigning premier Woodville-West Torrens by 60 points, while the Crows lost to Sturt in a one-point nail-biter. Magpies captain Cam Sutcliffe is expected to have an influence on the outcome through the midfield and in attack while father-son selection Taj Schofield and ruckman Sam Hayes are showing promising signs. Adelaide skipper Matthew Wright kicked four goals in round five, while defender Josh Worrell and midfielder Ronin O’Connor are settling in nicely for the Crows. ZAC MILBANK

What I’m thinking
IT’S BLACK AND WHITE: Port Adelaide’s prison bar guernsey is a significant part of the club’s heritage; (inset) Eddie McGuire and David Koch.
with Ashley Browne
No holds barred in jumper debate The Port Adelaide prison bar guernsey issue must be settled – just let the Power wear it.
W
hen discussing the merits or otherwise of Port Adelaide sporting its famous prison bar jumper for its pair of Showdown matches, let’s compare what made the club such a highly-sought addition to the competition when the push for national expansion began in earnest. West Coast and Brisbane came on board in 1987. The Eagles represented the collective aspiration of a footy-mad state and home to many of the greatest to have played the game. The Bears were established as a beachhead in a rapidly growing part of Australia that liked, but had never grown to love, the indigenous code. Adelaide was next in 1991, in what was a hastily compromised agreement between the AFL and the SANFL after an initial push for Port Adelaide to enter the competition. In 1995, Fremantle came along, a nod to the need to have matches played in Perth every weekend and a recognition to an area of the state with a deep and rich football heritage of its own. Port Adelaide came into the AFL at the second attempt in 1997. Alberton wasn’t a growth market the League hoped to conquer, nor was it a region crying out for a team of its own. Port’s home base was only a few kilometres up the road from the West Lakes base of the Crows.
94 AFL RECORD
Collingwood’s continued unwillingness to budge even a smidgeon is disappointing
Rather, Port was the most successful club in South Australia with 29 SANFL flags to its name, and with a supporter base large enough to sustain it in the AFL, given most of them had not jumped on the Crows bandwagon. The AFL, not once, but twice sought to admit Port to the competition because it was as low-risk an expansion team could be, with enough rusted-on support to be viable from day one. That’s why Port got the nod ahead of other South Australian options, including a Norwood-Sturt combination. Port Adelaide’s initial AFL leadership did itself no favours in choosing to carve out a fresh existence and initially keep the old SANFL Magpies at arm’s length. They wanted to cash in on Port’s name and popularity while ignoring the heritage, and it was a decision that has come back to haunt the club in the ongoing skirmish with the AFL and Collingwood over the famous prison bar jumper. Collingwood and Port Adelaide have been going at it for several years now, with headstrong presidential duo Eddie McGuire and David Koch leading the way for their respective clubs. Given their enormous media profiles, it has dominated the back pages for years. Collingwood’s continued unwillingness to budge even a smidgeon on this issue is disappointing. It was the hill that the combative McGuire was prepared to die on, but the hope was that his
successor, Mark Korda, would be the face of a newer, more progressive and pragmatic Collingwood. Sadly that’s not the case. Collingwood’s “there’s only one black and white team in the AFL” thinking isn’t in keeping with many of the premier sporting clubs around the world, with which it aspires to keep company. The New England Patriots wear red, white and blue, but the New York Giants beat them to it. As did the Buffalo Bills. The pinstripes are synonymous, but not exclusive to, the New York Yankees. Sworn enemies Liverpool and Manchester United both wear primarily red home strips. None of the aforementioned sporting behemoths feel ever so slightly threatened by another club wearing similar colours. The AFL loves its negotiated outcomes. Get Gillon McLachlan, Richard Goyder, Koch and Korda together, confiscate their phones and lock them in a room until they reach an outcome that recognises both Collingwood’s status as the AFL’s pre-eminent black and white club and the significance of the prison bar to Port’s rich heritage and tradition that the AFL has always found attractive – and the minimal damage caused by wearing it twice a year in Showdown games. Sign the agreement and be done with it. And let the game move on to what actually matters. @hashbrowne
