FINALS PREVIEW MAGPIE PRESSURE: Kangaroo midfielder Ellie Gavalas is double-teamed by star Collingwood duo Brianna Davey and Chloe Molloy.
FINALS FRENZY It’s down to the business end of the season. NIC NEGREPONTIS. he AFLW competition has reached its finals series and, unlike 2020, it will crown a premier. This season brings with it a new finals system, with the top two teams earning a bye through to the preliminary finals. Third and fourth on the ladder host fifth and sixth respectively on Saturday, with the winners advancing through to the final four.

ollingwood and North Melbourne will face off at Victoria Park in what should be a fiery showdown.
This means Adelaide and Brisbane will watch on this weekend as Melbourne plays Fremantle at Casey Fields and Collingwood takes on North Melbourne at Victoria Park. The Lions host the winner of the Magpies and Roos, while the Crows will welcome whoever wins out of the Demons and Dockers. The highest remaining seed will earn the right to host the Grand Final, meaning the road to the premiership goes through Adelaide unless the Crows are eliminated.
To put it simply, these teams do not like each other and it makes for compelling football. They met earlier in the season, with Collingwood holding North Melbourne goalless in a defensive master class under the roof at Marvel Stadium. The game was relatively even statistically, but the Magpies
were dangerous inside 50 while the Roos could not get through the black and white wall across half-back. This is also a rematch of the 2020 elimination final, where the Kangaroos edged out Collingwood by just two points in a game that sparked belief in a Pies outfit that had risen from the wooden spoon into finals. womens.AFL

FINALS PREVIEW North Melbourne swiped four of the Magpies’ foundation players when it entered the competition – Jasmine Garner, Emma King, Jess Duffin and the now-retired Moana Hope. Collingwood has not forgotten that fact. The remaining trio will be critical to this contest,
particularly Garner and King in a midfield battle that the Magpies won earlier in the year. Emma Kearney, Jenna Bruton, Ash Riddell, Ellie Gavalas, Garner and King have long been seen as the game’s best midfield unit, but Sharni Norder, Brianna Davey, Jaimee Lambert,

In typical Fremantle fashion, it stormed home and took the lead before some Daisy Pearce brilliance swung the game back in Melbourne’s favour. It’s important to mention Pearce as the Demons will be without their captain for this must-win game after she suffered a knee injury in round nine. She has been a vital cog in Melbourne’s late-season charge up the ladder, playing essentially as a full-forward. Without her, the Demons may have to swing the versatile Eden Zanker back inside 50 after she has spent most of the season through the midfield.

elbourne hosts Fremantle in a fascinating contest at Casey Fields. The teams met only a fortnight ago in Perth, with the Demons pulling off an away victory by just five points. They came out of the blocks firing, keeping the Dockers goalless to half-time and leading by four goals.
Brittany Bonnici, Sarah Rowe and Steph Chiocci have equal billing on 2021 form. Expect fireworks and nerves aplenty for two teams who believe their premiership window is wide open.
PREDICTION: Collingwood by two points Melbourne also did an outstanding job curtailing Kiara Bowers in that round eight game. Bowers had her quietest performance of the season, finishing with just 12 disposals. Fremantle will need a dominant on-ball performance from Bowers to beat the Demons, given how much the Dockers’ midfield relies on her. What Fremantle has is the confidence it can win any game, no matter the situation, given its scoring power.
PREDICTION: Melbourne by 10 points
@NicNegrepontis
MATCH-WINNER: The Demons will be aiming to again curtail the brilliance of Dockers star Kiara Bowers.

THE ALSO-RANS
THE ALSO-RANS NIC NEGREPONTIS assesses the eight teams that will be looking on during finals.
S
ix teams qualified for finals, but eight missed out and will now enter off-season mode, evaluating what went right and what went wrong. The top six was largely what was expected coming into 2021, though a few teams will be disappointed they have missed the finals action.
CARLTON u Chief among them is Carlton,
which lost three games by a goal or less. The Blues will rue those losses to Collingwood, Fremantle and the Bulldogs, given winning one of them would have been enough. In the end, the Blues did not beat any of the top six sides and only have themselves to blame.
14
AFL RECORD
NOT FAR AWAY: The Blues accounted for the Giants in the final round (above), but would rue several costly close losses, while the Tigers, led by Katie Brennan (below), got better as the season progressed.
WESTERN BULLDOGS u The Western Bulldogs got
off to a flying start, but three straight losses in the back half of the season saw them drop out of the finals mix. The Dogs have a young team loaded with top draftees and, while the future looks bright, they were beaten comfortably by Collingwood, North Melbourne and Adelaide, highlighting they’re not quite there yet.
GWS GIANTS u GWS was thrown into chaos
at the start of the season, stuck in Albury and then Adelaide because of COVID-19 issues in Sydney. The Giants would be stoked with how they salvaged that situation, finishing with four wins and working over their opposotion physically every week.

AFLW FS p14-15 Also-Rans.indd 14

RICHMOND u Richmond was one of the big
surprises of the season, winning three games and taking it right up to a number of contenders. The Tigers deserved to finish above the bottom four, beating the teams beneath them and proving they made all the right moves in the off-season.
STRONG START: Georgia Patrikios was a standout despite the Saints dropping away over the season, while the Eagles (below) battled gamely throughout.
ST KILDA u St Kilda started strongly
with a win over the Dogs and a good performance against the Roos, but dropped away in the middle of the season. Four consecutive losses saw the Saints fall steeply before a big away win over West Coast in round nine gave them something to believe in.
WEST COAST EAGLES u West Coast would not have
been happy with its final performance of the season, but round nine aside, the Eagles were better than anticipated. When a bottom four AFLW team loses its star player for the season early on, in this case Dana Hooker, expectations dip dramatically, but West Coast remained competitive and found a few talented players along the way.
GEELONG CATS u Geelong narrowly avoided
a winless season, saluting in the final round. Top draftee Nina Morrison missed the entire season, recovering from a torn ACL, and star midfielder Olivia Purcell suffered the same injury mid-season. The Cats finished with a percentage of just 40.
GOLD COAST SUNS u Gold Coast went from a
fast-paced exciting expansion side in 2020 to winless wooden spooner in 2021. The Suns were hit hard by injuries, but with a percentage of 36 and an average of 19.5 points a game, they have a lot of work ahead of them.

GOODER
Playing footy is good. Playing in gear made for you? That’s gooder.
SUBMIT YOUR SUGGESTION
When someone suggested that local women’s teams were running around wearing men’s hand-me-downs, we thought; that’s not good for footy! That’s why Toyota is giving 100 grassroots clubs around the country brand new uniforms designed specifically for women, so they can play with pride and confidence. At Toyota, we’re determined to make the game better for the entire footy community, and we need your help. So whether you play it, coach it, watch it or just love it, we want to hear your suggestions. Visit toyota.com.au/gooder to share your ideas and we’ll make the best ones happen. Now that’s Good for Footy!
