t is all on the line this weekend, with the AFLW Grand Final match-up to be determined. Adelaide will host Melbourne, while Collingwood travels to take on Brisbane, both games on Saturday afternoon. The Lions and Crows earned byes in the first week of the finals series, having finished in the top two spots on the ladder. Collingwood won its way through to the preliminary finals, defeating North Melbourne in a thriller at Victoria Park last weekend, while Melbourne

held off a fast-finishing Fremantle at Casey Fields. Both eliminated teams would be disappointed with how their seasons came to an end. The Kangaroos and Dockers won their respective conferences last year and were on significant winning streaks before the 2020 season was called off. They both entered 2021 among the premiership favourites and, while they had their moments, neither reached their full potential.
their third AFLW Grand Final in six years. The Demons, meanwhile, have been close most years, but have never reached the big dance. This could be their best opportunity. These teams were arguably the most in-form sides at the end of the home and away season. Including last weekend, Melbourne has won five games
in a row, beating Fremantle twice, Brisbane, St Kilda and – importantly – Adelaide. The Demons are white-hot and were too strong for the Dockers in the first week of finals, holding them goalless for a half and dominating with the wind in the final term. Adelaide outplayed Collingwood in round nine to earn the minor premiership and womens.AFL

FINALS PREVIEW crushed the Western Bulldogs, St Kilda and Gold Coast in the final stretch. Objectively, Melbourne has had a tougher road to the finals and its form looks more impressive. More so when you consider the Demons defeated Adelaide in round seven at Casey Fields,
holding the Crows to just two goals for the game. Erin Phillips, Ebony Marinoff and Anne Hatchard have been a dominant midfield trio all season, but were beaten by Melbourne’s on-ball unit which controlled the territory game all night. Of course, this game is being

Their strengths were on full display in the final quarter, with Brianna Davey and Jaimee Lambert taking over in the middle, Ash Brazill back to her intercept-marking best and Chloe Molloy the X-factor inside 50. Brisbane took the chocolates when these sides met in round seven. It was an impressive win considering the game was relocated from Queensland to Melbourne at the last moment. The Lions dominated the first three quarters before Collingwood fought back and probably should have overrun them. It was a classic Brisbane performance, with an even display across the board, while

risbane will host Collingwood at the Gabba with a spot in the Grand Final on the line. It’s only the second time the Lions have played at the Gabba, so the home-ground advantage factor will be significantly lessened. The Magpies earned their way through to this encounter with a come-from-behind win over North Melbourne in a thriller last weekend.
played at Adelaide Oval and not Casey Fields, which is a very different playing field. The Crows return to the scene of their 2019 Grand Final victory, but the Demons will be equally suited to the cleaner stadium conditions.

the Magpies’ main ball-winners all influenced the game. Collingwood has more experience playing on the wider expanses and cleaner conditions that come with playing in stadiums. We saw the Magpies pick North Melbourne apart at Marvel Stadium earlier in the year. Couple that with the Gabba essentially being new territory for Brisbane and it is certainly a hard result to predict. Both teams were eliminated from finals in the first week last year and both have made it one step further this year.
PREDICTION: Collingwood by five points

WELL HELD: Magpie star Brianna Davey was below her best in the loss to the Lions in round seven.

THE ALSO-RANS
THE ALSO-RANS NIC NEGREPONTIS assesses the eight teams that will be looking on during finals.
S
ix teams qualified for finals, but eight missed out and will now enter off-season mode, evaluating what went right and what went wrong. The top six was largely what was expected coming into 2021, though a few teams will be disappointed they have missed the finals action.
CARLTON u Chief among them is Carlton,
which lost three games by a goal or less. The Blues will rue those losses to Collingwood, Fremantle and the Bulldogs, given winning one of them would have been enough. In the end, the Blues did not beat any of the top six sides and only have themselves to blame.
14
AFL RECORD
NOT FAR AWAY: The Blues accounted for the Giants in the final round (above), but would rue several costly close losses, while the Tigers, led by Katie Brennan (below), got better as the season progressed.
WESTERN BULLDOGS u The Western Bulldogs got
off to a flying start, but three straight losses in the back half of the season saw them drop out of the finals mix. The Dogs have a young team loaded with top draftees and, while the future looks bright, they were beaten comfortably by Collingwood, North Melbourne and Adelaide, highlighting they’re not quite there yet.
GWS GIANTS u GWS was thrown into chaos
at the start of the season, stuck in Albury and then Adelaide because of COVID-19 issues in Sydney. The Giants would be stoked with how they salvaged that situation, finishing with four wins and working over their opposotion physically every week.

RICHMOND u Richmond was one of the big
surprises of the season, winning three games and taking it right up to a number of contenders. The Tigers deserved to finish above the bottom four, beating the teams beneath them and proving they made all the right moves in the off-season.
STRONG START: Georgia Patrikios was a standout despite the Saints dropping away over the season, while the Eagles (below) battled gamely throughout.
ST KILDA u St Kilda started strongly
with a win over the Dogs and a good performance against the Roos, but dropped away in the middle of the season. Four consecutive losses saw the Saints fall steeply before a big away win over West Coast in round nine gave them something to believe in.
WEST COAST EAGLES u West Coast would not have
been happy with its final performance of the season, but round nine aside, the Eagles were better than anticipated. When a bottom four AFLW team loses its star player for the season early on, in this case Dana Hooker, expectations dip dramatically, but West Coast remained competitive and found a few talented players along the way.
GEELONG CATS u Geelong narrowly avoided
a winless season, saluting in the final round. Top draftee Nina Morrison missed the entire season, recovering from a torn ACL, and star midfielder Olivia Purcell suffered the same injury mid-season. The Cats finished with a percentage of just 40.
GOLD COAST SUNS u Gold Coast went from a
fast-paced exciting expansion side in 2020 to winless wooden spooner in 2021. The Suns were hit hard by injuries, but with a percentage of 36 and an average of 19.5 points a game, they have a lot of work ahead of them.

GOOD
GOODER
Playing footy is good. Playing in gear made for you? That’s gooder.
SUBMIT YOUR SUGGESTION
When someone suggested that local women’s teams were running around wearing men’s hand-me-downs, we thought; that’s not good for footy! That’s why Toyota is giving 100 grassroots clubs around the country brand new uniforms designed specifically for women, so they can play with pride and confidence. At Toyota, we’re determined to make the game better for the entire footy community, and we need your help. So whether you play it, coach it, watch it or just love it, we want to hear your suggestions. Visit toyota.com.au/gooder to share your ideas and we’ll make the best ones happen. Now that’s Good for Footy!
