INSPIRING A NEW GENERATION
GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH
W
elcome to the 2021 NAB AFL Women’s Grand Final. We are incredibly proud of the season and look forward to crowning the premier of the 2021 NAB AFL Women’s Competition at Adelaide Oval. The NAB AFL Women’s Competition continues to go from strength to strength and that is a credit to everyone involved in the game – from the grassroots to the elite. On the field, supporters have witnessed a more open and attacking style of football in season five of the competition. The skills and athleticism of our senior players combined with the immediate impact of emerging talent has contributed to the strongest season in the history of the competition. Off the field, it has been fantastic to see more people watching NAB AFLW, with an average TV audience of more than five million Australians this year, while supporters have contributed to a record membership tally. Almost 120,000 supporters attended games this season, with 13 games reaching a sellout, and we’re proud that more than 600,000 women and girls are now playing Australian Football across the country. On behalf of the AFL, I want to thank both clubs, players and the AFLPA, umpires, venues, governments, ticket agents, supporters and our broadcast and commercial partners for their understanding and continued support of the NAB AFL Women’s Competition. Good luck to the Crows and the Lions and I look forward to seeing you at the footy.
W
ell, what an absolutely incredible 2021 NAB AFLW season we have just witnessed. I congratulate all the AFLW players and clubs on what has truly been an outstanding competition. It’s been so exciting to see the 18 NAB AFLW Rising Star nominees have an immediate impact on the season this year, and we’re looking forward to awarding the 2021 NAB AFLW Rising Star winner a $20,000 NAB portfolio at the W Awards. NAB has proudly partnered with the AFLW since its inaugural season in 2017, and during this time, we’ve enjoyed watching the game create so many more opportunities for women in sport and inspire a whole new generation of young Australians. I wish both the Adelaide Crows and the Brisbane Lions the best of luck in the 2021 NAB AFLW Grand Final and I look forward to seeing everyone back on the field in the 2022 NAB AFLW season.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
THE BIG
FULL HOUSE: A record crowd of more than 53,000 fans rocked Adelaide Oval as the Crows claimed the 2019 premiership.

T
he AFLW Grand Final is here, with Adelaide hosting Brisbane at Adelaide Oval, a rematch of the inaugural season’s Grand Final. The top two teams have made it through and home ground advantage played a big role in the preliminary finals. It will be the second Grand Final at Adelaide Oval, following a record crowd of 53,034 in 2019 when the Crows downed Carlton by 45 points. GRAND FINAL – SAT, APRIL 17
ADELAIDE OVAL, 1.30PM ACST
u In a rematch of the inaugural AFLW Grand Final, the Adelaide Crows will take on the Brisbane Lions again
While COVID-19 restrictions might mean a smaller crowd this time, it should still be an incredible atmosphere. An Adelaide win would be historic, with multiple players having the chance to become three-time premiership players. As for the Lions, they’ll be looking to avenge their two Grand Final losses from 2017 and 2018. NIC NEGREPONTIS
on Saturday afternoon at Adelaide Oval. The Crows will be looking to claim their third premiership from four tries, if you discount the cancelled 2020 season, and cement their legacy as the dominant team of the first era of AFLW. A lot has changed since 2017, but Adelaide still has 12
members of the Grand Final side that triumphed over the Lions. Brisbane has only seven players left from that 2017 line-up, with the majority of its side picked off by expansion teams. Ten members of the Lions’ inaugural AFLW side are still in the league and playing elsewhere. womens.AFL

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW EXCITEMENT PLUS: Dynamic forward Dakota Davidson looms as a potential match-winner for the Lions.
Being able to rebuild the list on the fly and make it back to the Grand Final so quickly is a testament to Brisbane coach Craig Starcevich and his club’s list management. Adelaide made its way through after winning a final of sorts in round nine over Collingwood to earn top spot and control the home field throughout the finals. The Crows took full advantage of that against Melbourne in the preliminary final, winning comfortably and booking their Grand Final spot. The Lions also finished the year with wins over the Magpies and Roos to earn second spot and a much-needed bye in the first week of finals. That home ground advantage proved crucial against Collingwood in their preliminary final, outlasting the Magpies in the blistering Queensland heat.

AFL RECORD
The biggest storyline heading into this game is Adelaide captain Chelsea Randall, who will miss with concussion. Some have asked whether the AFL’s new 12-day concussion protocols would hold firm if it meant a star player missed a Grand Final – and at the first possible instance of testing them, they have. The Crows have struggled historically without Randall and will need to work things differently minus their courageous barometer. The game has clean air following the AFL’s decision to move the game between the Western Bulldogs and Gold Coast to a twilight start to free up the Saturday afternoon slot. The Crows and the Lions have built arguably the AFLW’s best rivalry and fans can expect a ferocious contest.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT: Crows superstar Erin Phillips already has two Grand Final Best on Ground medals to her name.
KEY MATCH-UPS
ERIN PHILLIPS v BREANNA KOENEN u When Phillips pushes forward, Koenen is a likely match-up for the superstar. Koenen shut down Collingwood’s Chloe Molloy in the preliminary final, helped by the Lions’ pressure through the midfield. Can she stop Phillips from winning a third Grand Final Best on Ground medal?
SUPER STOPPER: Cathy Svarc will have the job of trying to quell Crow star Ebony Marinoff’s influence.
SARAH ALLEN v DAKOTA DAVIDSON u Davidson was the difference for Brisbane in the preliminary final, kicking three big goals. Allen is the likely match-up for Davidson as one of the game’s best young key defenders. Shutting down the star Lion will be a key to Adelaide’s chances.
EBONY MARINOFF v CATHY SVARC u Svarc is the AFLW’s No. 1 tagger and has quelled the likes of Brianna Davey and Kiara Bowers. While she may
go to Phillips when she’s on-ball, Marinoff’s dominance in the preliminary final might have the Lions second
guessing. Quelling Marinoff’s influence around the contests would help the Lions win the clearances. womens.AFL

FLIPPING OUT! I t’s not often a Collingwood fan would be cheered and welcomed at Adelaide Oval, but that will be the case at this year’s AFLW Grand Final. Australian indie-pop artist G Flip will perform at the pre-game entertainment show for the 2021 decider and she is excited at the opportunity even though her beloved Magpies were eliminated in last week’s preliminary final. “It’s such a privilege and an honour to be playing at the 2021 NAB AFLW Grand Final,” she said. “I’ve been a footy fan since my Dad put a Magpies scarf around my neck as a baby and I haven’t missed a Pies game this season. “I don’t just like footy, I love footy. This will be one

of the highlights of my life, I’m very excited.” G Flip (also known as Georgia Flipo) came on to the music scene in 2018, following the release of her breakout single About You from her debut album About Us. The Melbourne-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist has received a host of music accolades, including a Best New Music nod from Pitchfork, coverage from iconic publications Rolling Stone and the LA Times and has sold out headline shows in Australia and overseas. The national anthem and Welcome to Country will be performed by local talent as part of the pre-game formalities.

DAVEY JOINS PIE GREATS
TOP HONOURS: Magpie co-captain Brianna Davey and Tiger youngster Ellie McKenzie (below) were recognised by their peers.
C
ollingwood co-captain Brianna Davey joined an elite cohort of Magpies, winning the AFLW Players Most Valuable Player Award for her outstanding 2021 campaign. In a close result, the 26-year-old was voted the MVP by her peers with 319 votes, edging out Fremantle hard-nut Kiara Bowers (313) and the Western Bulldogs’ Ellie Blackburn (214). Davey became only the third Magpie to claim an MVP trophy, joining Collingwood champions Darren Millane (1990) and Dane Swan (2010). After starting her AFLW career as a defender with Carlton, Davey, a foundation player who earned the Best Captain Award in 2019 before crossing to the Magpies for the 2020 season, spent time as a midfielder with stints inside forward 50 in 2021. Davey led the competition in disposals, averaging 23.8 a game, and was in the top 10 for metres gained, contested possessions, clearances, marks, tackles, score involvements and inside 50s. Heart-and-soul Adelaide skipper Chelsea Randall won the Most Courageous Award – her fourth title in five years after winning three consecutive awards from 2017-19 – polling 117 votes ahead of the Western Bulldogs’ Kirsty Lamb (69). Bulldogs skipper Ellie Blackburn claimed the Best Captain Award with 86 votes, ahead of three-time winner Daisy Pearce (62). The players also crowned another newcomer, with Richmond’s Ellie McKenzie

The W Awards will recognise the AFLW Best and Fairest, NAB AFLW Rising Star, All-Australian Team, Four’N Twenty Mark of the Year and Rebel Goal of the Year. The live vote count will be broadcast from five locations around Australia – the SCG, the Gabba, Adelaide Oval, Crown Palladium and Optus Stadium.

GRAND FINAL
MY SPECIAL PLACE
HAVING A BALL: Amelia Courtney has put into words her love for footy; (inset) fellow youngsters show their sheer delight for the game.
Year 7 student AMELIA COURTNEY shares her love of playing the game she adores.
A
s our team splits up on to the field and take our positions, I put my mouthguard in and it surrounds my teeth. I can taste the rubbery flavour on my tongue and my teeth are now the bright orange of an apricot. I take my place and wait for the game to begin. I’m at my special place now, the footy field. I can see the umpire approaching the centre of the field with a bright yellow ball. The fresh air is cold on my legs and I hug myself for warmth. The wind blows my hair into my face and I brush it behind my ear out of the way. I’m prepared if the ball comes my way and I stand in front of my opponent so she can’t get the ball. The morning air is whipping my legs and face and it sends shivers down my spine. As I run towards the ball and teammates, my body starts to ignore the freezing cold wind as I am now stuck in the game, too focused to care. As I tackle one of the girls, my legs are now on the ground and I can feel the crusty dirt sticking to my skin. A mob forms around the ball and the whistle blows, signalling to stop the fight for the ball and stand up. I’m ready for the ball-up. I jump as high as I can and

smack the ball towards my teammates. I can now see more of my team in front of me and the towering goalposts standing at the end of the oval. A girl with the ball charges towards me and I get a feeling of aggression. I roughly grab her waist and pull her to the ground with me and I can smell the dewy grass beneath me as she is trying to wriggle off me. I pull the ball out of her arms and quickly handball it towards one of my teammates just as I hit the ground again. My hand has that stinging feeling and I get back up, dirt all over my face. I run towards the other side of the oval and see a girl on my team pass the ball to another girl; she kicks the footy through the goalposts just before she is slammed on to the ground. I can hear parents yelling in celebration and car horns honking. Our team congratulates our goalscorer and we go back to our positions. After the game, I leave my special place and now I can see
sausages cooking on top of a barbecue and being laid on to a fresh piece of bread covered in sauce. I head to the car with my family with the delicious sausage melting in my mouth. We head home and dirt is sticking all over me. I feel relieved that we managed to win the game, but I’m tired from all the running. I can’t wait to have a nice warm shower to melt off the icy feeling that’s on my skin. I’m ready to relax. I’ll be returning to my special place next week.

At Toyota, we’re determined to make the game better for the entire footy community, and we need your help.
